I’m really interested in the Government. Now, that’s not to say I love the government. However, I think the last 100 years have been so crazy for Russia that I’d love to know more about it.
How are women treated in Russia?

The cold helps the pain and swelling in your throat and the heat helps to break up mucus etc. They both serve a purpose.
I'm a cashier part time and those little conversations are genuinely bright spots in my day. Even if it's a stranger, I usually do care.

I have a Russian daughter, in law married to my son. There is something that I really appreciate about her that is hard to define, kind of a directness or realness. I would probably enjoy visiting the country and going around meeting people. You speak english very well.

I also got chills when you were talking about how accessible things are for those with disabilities and how it is becoming more common for places to help them and normalize it. I love how we strive to include those with disabilities. 🥰 it’s very important to me because a lot of my friends and family have disabilities both physical and mental.
Of course this phenomenon took protests on behalf of disabled people, and years of advocacy to secure governmet policies to recognize that disabled folks have needs, talents, and abilities like everyone else. That only exists because many people got together, enacted free speech, and created public awareness and government response.
Handicap accessible buildings, parking, is here because laws were passed due to citizens protesting and lobbying congress, as another commenter has pointed out. This has only happened recently.
it's very easy to land in a wheelchair. slip, fall in an unlucky manner, there you go.
I work with an Albanian. I asked him his biggest difference between USA and Albania and he said the same thing u di about work. He said "In Albania you have no money but you have time. In America you have money and no time"
In Germany you have both. It's pretty shocking if you come from Eastern Europe, for example, where you have neither :))

Western Europe sounds like a paradise compared to other places in that matter ^^

What's really funny is that you can hear the Russian when she says "My family **lives** in Russia," but then hear tried and true Maryland when she says the word "Maryland."
tmedocianis THIS! I was actually taking note of how southeast her accent can be at times while being super Russian at once. Baltimore definitely helped influence her accent a ton and I’m even noticing how California is affecting it. Her voice is everything.
In Russia it is important to have a rich vocabulary using a language, it is a sign of educated and intelligent person

Very true. American phrases don't always mean the same as what the words are individually... like "bless you heart" when spoken by an older female(aunt or great aunt) in the south translates to something quit ugly depending on their tone spoken
Right. And sweetly in England they say, "How do you do?" No one expects a long reply.

Boy you have such a lovely soft voice, a charming manner, and a natural kindness that makes it a great pleasure to listen to you tell the stories of your life here. Your family and children are so lucky to have you as a daily presence in their lives. I think it is so important for people who love both Russia and America to speak up right now when thing have grown suddenly tense in the world. And I am not just talking about international affairs, I am also referring to the pandemic and long periods of disruption and fear. Do not underestimate what a gem you are. Yes please tell us more about your experiences.
Now let me tell how I think of your husbands ice obsessions. I was born and raised in Florida. It is very hot and humid here. That is why I gravitate to ice and ices when I have a cold or fever. My parents were both born in northern Spain. They gravitate to soups and warm drinks when they get sick. i think we are all trying to balance our body temperatures when we feel sick. In addition I also love feeling "taken care of" when I get sick. So the first thing I do is get a couple of chicken thighs and chorizos and make a brothy vermecelli soup that my mother always made for us when we got sick. We called it "Fideos", but it is nothing like what the Mexicans call Fideos. Ours is a very gentle soup and always makes me feel like I am back in my mothers loving arms. So there are many things that people get great joy and healing from.
PS I just noticed your video was from 2020. You may not find this comment now, but I hope you do. We need more people like you in the world today.

I find it so interesting that foreigners think when we smile and ask each other how are you doing that it's fake. I've worked in customer service for over 20 years and it's not fake. Yeah we do not have enough sick days vacation days I completely agree with that
Because a lot of it is fake. I guess it depends on where you live, but in the south there's a lot of insincere politeness. People smile only because they don't want to be rude, they ask how are you but don't even wait for a response because they never cared in the first place
As a Mexican American I really cannot imagine not acknowledging/talking to cashiers or people in public places. It always brightens my day to strike conversation with random people, it reminds me that no matter what walk of life we’ve all had, we all have this shared experience as people. I totally agree. I am always open to hear how someone is doing. You can brighten someone day with a polite, quick conversation or even stop someone from considering Suicide.
Looks people living closer to the north tend to be reserved and unfriendly. Most Latin Americans are not shy to interact; like most southerners in the USA.

lol I hate talking with people. I'm an introvert and shy talking with random people and I don't enjoy them asking me personal questions or having to force myself to say Hi even when I'm walking by someone at the park just for the sake of being nice and not look rude.
I'm not trying to be mean I just don't like talking. I just want to go do my stuff and go awar.
The two luckiest people in the world are her husband and child.

Pregnant women (in America at least) generally wait until they are out of their first trimester to tell “everyone”. A lot of women tell both sets of their parents, and maybe their siblings or very very close friends before that. It’s simply because most miscarriages happen in the first trimester, so if you do end up having one, then you only have to tell the select group of people that knew you were pregnant, and can deal with it a bit more privately.
You're a lovely person. Your perspective is refreshing and humorous. Sometimes we forget about the simple benefits we should be appreciating more.
Im from Sweden and I was also very suprised how friendly americans are and talk to you everywhere.

I've met a few people from Belgium and they were quite rude, never smiled, rather demanding, inconsiderate. Maybe it was ancidotal, but that's the impression they have left on me.
Ben Andersson don’t know how the svensk are but the Norwegians are very serious about personal space and don’t engage in social pleasantries as much. I actually love their attitude and culture. Next time I’ll make sure I get to Sverige. I have a few comrades over there. Scandinavia is a stunning place. Kvik lunsj is overrated though. Its quick but it ain’t no lunch and taste the same as a kit kat. Beklager mine norske venner.

When I visited Russia in the late 90's, people told me that Americans "smile too much". And many people said they thought it was because "they probably are trying to sell you something".
They aren't wrong!

That is how a lot of brits feel with really cheery 'staff' of any kind...its too forced/fake and youre clearly doing it just for the tips and it actually puts off a lot of brits rather than entices them.
I am 100% American, and If I ever visit Russia, I am going to smile ALL the time (under any circumstance), and I am going to try to sell something to EVERYONE whom I meet. I can't wait!
It’s such a simple factor that tends to be overlooked, but I’m so incredibly impressed with this woman’s sheer intelligence for not only being so fluent in English, but being more eloquent and knowledgeable with it than a lot of ignorant people I’ve come across who are lucky enough to have it as their first language.
She's been living in the US for 14 years, so her English is of course fluent.
Her English is very perfect and correct - but I still find her a bit difficult to understand because of her slow way of speaking and her constant whispering - as if she's telling you a secret.
I'd prefer a more normal way of talking.
And besides, I don't find her small diffrencies between Russia and America that exiting.
I believe that she should have thought things over before she started to record her video.

"The Gift of Gab" that's a person's ability to literally talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time. My mom is really good at it and insists that it's a helpful skill when trying to create business connections. 10 years ago she ended up talking to a lady who rents the cabana next to ours in Hawaii and they spend hours just chatting when we go on vacation.
I’ve been to Europe twice and I enjoyed the fact that people didn’t work themselves to death unlike the USA. Everyone was very relaxed! I wish it was like that here.

Victoria Ortega YES! I think we really need an overhaul on the American working system. It just seems to work people to death at times. I am all for hard work and dedication, but I really think other countries are much more on the right track with their employment policies! :)
I told my mom I was gonna move to France because their work culture isn't so toxic like it is here. I could never move overseas though, I'm a wimp lol. But I refuse to be a slave to my job here.

Elle's Reviews Yes! People work themselves to death in America. The counties I’ve been to in Europe either close very early or they close for a period of time and then re-open in the evening. It’s very different from some of our stores that are open 24/7 in the USA 😜

As a cashier myself, the conversation is a way to fill the sometimes awkward gaping silence between the beeps of the register. It just doesn't feel right to not engage with the customers.
I hate the small talk, and some people aren't interested, but many customers will complain that you're rude if you don't engage with them fully. I've even had older women complain to my manager because I didn't greet them with a smile at the door while I was actively ringing someone up at my register. some folks really want their hand held through the whole process of just shopping at a grocery store or eating at a restaurant and it's really annoying.

Even if it's something I hate, I appreciate that they are going out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Saying "a machine can do your job" is so belittling & is just straight up being an asshole.

If I’m waiting in a line to check out and the cashier is chatting and holding up the line I will start making comments about having places to be... If they keep it up I’ll just drop whatever I was going to buy and walk out. It’s a store! I just want to buy stuff!
The conversation isn't meant to hold the line. It's meant to be pleasant. There are certain cues you pick up on that dictate the interaction, as with any other social situation. If you're more interested in using self checkouts, be my guest. They're there for the convenience of the customer. You're also more than welcome to be frustrated if the line isn't moving swiftly. Maybe try a different line?

That's your own fault. You don't go looking for the good. Most people are stuck on autopilot and don't even see the stars at night or the sun rise in the morning. People are so focused on what everyone else is doing. Take a trip. Get out and see things. Take a walk. Ride in the passenger seat, I love that last one. You WILL see things you never saw before. It's amazing.

America disappoints me as a citizen from time to time, but hearing about Maria’s wonder helps me appreciate what I’m lucky to have
Every country disappoints people who live there. When you get out there and live in other countries, you realize the self-loathing is pointless. Every country has their sh*t. We’re not unique for that. We just get all the scrutiny and bad press so it seems like we’re the only one.
The fact that you’re disappointed sometimes in this paradise (in comparison to other places) shows why it is great! You want it to be better you try to make it better and when it goes against your vision of what you want you’re disappointed because you know the potential to hit you’re desires here. That privilege we have here seems normal but isn’t in most places. My wife is from Rio and Brazil is like the 5th most populated place through her and my travels I am constantly reminded of things I thought of as everyday normal aren’t everywhere. Pretty eye opening or me.

You'd be very grateful if you had parents or grandparents who had to leave their country because they were middle class & educated. I'm grateful my family found a home here but I worry because I'm seeing this country becoming more dictatorial & our freedoms being taken!

I share openly. We went through tragedy when my husband died suddenly when I was 41 and we have 5 kids. I mentioned it on a comment and a new widow spoke up, telling me her husband had died a month before and she was completely alone because her only relative, a sister, lived out of state. I got her involved with a widow group I found so helpful because I know that hell and didn't think I would survive. She made many friends and has a lot of support from others who knew what it's like. 6 months later I found out she had written a suicide note to mail her sister just that morning and was planning on taking her own life to join her husband when she saw my comment. Every struggle we have, others are also living. They may have advice which could give us a hand when we need it most, or we could be the ones sending them a needed life vest.
Thank you for sharing. We often don’t know the difficulties our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and strangers are navigating through. A smile, a compliment, a quick word of encouragement, or even unsolicited advise providing resources can change the life of a person.

Instead of asking "How're you going?" or "How are you?" when I interact briefly with others, I am trying to say "It's good to see you!" or "I hope your day is a good one!" or something of the sort. I find this helps convey positivity and kindness but doesn't hold the emptiness that the former questions do. Why ask someone how they are if you don't have the time or energy to listen?
I respond "I will complain if you have four hours to listen".
I feel like non-USA people don't always understand the "how are you" thing - when I say that I do really want to know and care, even if it's a negative answer! Even a few word answer of "not so well" or "really stressed" and I genuinely care and I can commiserate or wish you a better day!

Maybe when you are talking to friends. If your cashier asks you that he will be very bewildered if you give an honest answer.
Chris Xentrac Even Australian are confused with “How’s it going ?” Everything else checks out. How are you ?, What’s up ? How do you do (old English) ? All are substitute for “good morning” or “good evening”

It would confuse me as a brit. I wouldnt ask or be asked by anyone other than someone i know because i genuinely don't think the average person wants to know. Even then a lot it gets asked as a 'time filler' when you know for a fact anything other than okay, not too bad, good etc would not be appreciated.. imagine if every 10people you met 1gave you really miserable news from their lives? (We already willingly tend to share joyous new much more easily its the bad news people lie about to strangers)

I live in Australia, so a similar culture to the US. This was really interesting to watch. Growing up in Australia (or the US) sometimes we forget how lucky we are with what we have available. A good reminder.

I agree Australia is more like the US than any other country I’ve been to including Canada. The personalities and culture are very similar.

Just came across your video, what a pleasure to meet you, your soft voice, your stories , a smile that could light a Christmas tree, delivered by this beautiful lady made my day. I am a Canadian whose country is described by others as being very friendly, kind, generous and of course the never ending smiles. I know I cannot stand in a line-up without starting a conversation with others in the line-up. If I sit on down somewhere , whoever is there as well , I will start a conversation with them. It is truly a great learning experience.

Americans are very friendly. You move to a building and they say hi to you the first day. From then forward they just ignore you.
I live in Western Europe, so it’s interesting to see that in some ways we’re more like the US and in some ways more like Russia. I really enjoyed the video 😊
I think whats different here from many cultures is a class system, or lack of one. Normal Americans don't look down on the house keeper, the repairman, the construction worker, the fast food worker and such people. We all remember our first job and appreciate other peoples position and efforts. Naturally the ultra rich may see an expendable zombie there only to serve the rich. But when you talk to one of these workers you may hear of the dangerous trip they had to make to get here and they are so happy to be here. My mother came from Austria and my wife came from Laos. Both were bombed by the Americans...but both adapted to becoming Americans.
As a language instructor, I have to comment: Terrific natural English. Inspirational. Thanks so much for making and posting this.

@Jaime Alonzo I have to hand it to you, you are persistent. This is quite ironic considering that in one of your other comments you made a complaint about Americans being arrogant and only seeing the world their way. Yet here you are, forcing your views on others, refusing to accept that people from different cultures think of the world in different ways. I suppose that you could be described as such an American as well.
Ask any citizen of any first world country, they’ll say the same thing about their country. Australians love Australia. New Zealanders love New Zealand. Swiss love Switzland ... all it is, is that home is where your bed is, and where you know how to get milk.
I've traveled all over America, and lived in many places. What remains with me is the interaction I' ve had with people everywhere. Stories of their lives, sharing their sorrow, or having total strangers give you compassion when you need it. This is the best of who we are, I think. Generous in sharing ourselves.

Yes!! And it’s a good way to stay hydrated/get sugar when your stomach hurts. It’s slow enough melting to not make you sick so it “stays down”.
in europe we usually use a minty/menthol product. it cools without being cold. Eating cold things when im ill 100% makes me feel more sick.
Yes, but it's terrible for you! It takes so much energy for your body to stay warm enough, energy that's no longer being used for your immune system when you need it the most.
Steam feels better. Warm steam feels best. Popsicles and ice cream feels good for a minute, numbing you up, steam feels better for a whole night or day, soothing the irritation. Hydration is key. Drink clear liquids all day long. Room temperature is best IMO but warm is good too.
The "casual dress" in America is a relatively new phenomenon, last 20 years or so. I remember dressing up in the 70's and 80's to go out to eat or to pick up people at the airport. Yes, dress up to just pick up someone from the airport. It is a sign of respect to yourself to look your best, not to mention being a sign of respecting others.
Crazy how fast American culture has changed . If you back a couple decades further into the 40s and 50s, everyone wore suits and hats! I’ve always thought it looked nice to be honest.
What really irks me is that a lot of people wear shorts to church. Shorts! My mom always said you should wear your nicest clothes as a sign of respect. If these kids can dress up for work they can certainly dress at least as nicely for two hours every Sunday morning.

@@treasuretim3 I just don't understand it. I'd rather have you go to church in casual clothing than stay at home but I don't understand why people don't put in the effort to dress in at least khakis. In 2019 a survey was conducted in Russia - 53% of young people 18-24yo wanted to emigrate to civilized countries (EU, USA, Canada, Australia etc). I am from Russia and I know what I'm talking about. Post-communist slave society/Putin's dictatorship is a disaster for the economy and politics of the country. Young people have no prospects for high standards of living here.
The internet can be such a beautiful thing that way-- connecting people across thousands of miles in an instant. It made me happy, honestly, to think of you opening a mental window onto a certain part of you that isn't always accessible, through Maria's experience.

Yeah many of the issues she addressed here are also in India, people here in India don't share about their days or care to ask about our days, people do not smile at each other a lot and people who share their mental health or vulnerabilities are considered weird and weak ,so there are times when I look at American society and I m like wow I wish we had that here too,so u guys are definitely granted I think

I’m from England and moved to the states in 2005 and I noticed some of the things that you noticed as well. It took a long time to get used to people asking me to repeat my order when I ordered food like subway etc. I also noticed the size of vehicles was different. The number and size of SUV’s and trucks was hugely different and when I arrived I thought a Chevy Avalanche was massive until I was here a while and saw the number of trucks and the size of them was even bigger. You also mentioned people talking about their problems etc and that is huge for me. I am in the army and I have lost a lot of really good friends to suicide and feel that if they had just talked to someone about it then they would still be here. omg I could go on all day but you summed them up perfectly. More people need to see this video and understand how good they have it here compared to other places.

I’m from Northern Ireland and people smile and say hello, they are friendly (mostly lol) but when I went to California I noticed how extremely friendly people were and as bad as it sounds it does seem insincere when you’re not used to it. I was also so confused by the “how you doing?” “How’s it going?” when people greet you, like do I say hello? do I answer their question? Do I run away? 😂 lol

I live in South Texas near the border and we’re overwhelmingly Mexican or Mexican American here. Sometimes the cashiers will tell you their personal life stories LOL. There is a lady working at my local grocery store who talks to me about her cats and her struggles with menopause 😂 My mom is a Mexican immigrant and she’ll talk to everybody and usually walks out of her doctor appointments with recommendations for herbal remedies or recipes because she ends up talking to the other elderly ladies there haha. People are frequently chatting in the lobby of my tiny post office. We talk a lot. My dad is Cuban and they are even worse! They’re quite loud and it often sounds like they’re fighting/arguing but it’s just the way they talk.
I’ve never considered that eating popsicles while sick would be considered weird, but now that I think of it I don’t know why we do that here in America 😂
Because when your throat is sore and raw, the cold numbs it and makes it feel better!
when I had puking flu when I was little I couldn't even drink water without it coming back up, but I could eat a lot of popsicles. it gives fluids and some energy when you need it. also soothes a sore throat and has vitamin C to boost immune system!

Most of the things you said about USA like "smiling all the time, saying sorry, talking to the cashier and sharing our lives with random people" sound to me so normal because here in Brazil we are so used to do this stuff. We become friends with people who are waiting on the line in a bank, with the doorman of the building we live (it's very common to see people making a cake at home and saving a piece for the doorman, for example), with everyone. If one day you have the chance to travel to Brazil, you'll be amazed hahaha.

I feel like the U.S. is fairly middle of the road in terms of friendliness based on what I've heard of some other cultures. We're not as physically affectionate as some cultures are. Their greetings and whatnot are far more intimate than I'm comfortable with.

Late to the party so to speak but I love that you’re sharing your experiences of coming from Russia to the US. I think we as Americans while we are a melting pot we can also have a narrow view point. It’s nice to hear how our country differs and how others from around the world see us. Not by stereotypes but actually interacting with us to see how we really live. Honestly you’re a breath of fresh air. I do think that the fact that we are a melting pot makes us more curious and more interactive. We like small talk and getting to know each other. Which I think helps us learn because we are such a large country. We are just as curious about people from different coasts as we are about people from other countries. I’m in the south east so I like asking questions when I meet someone from the west or from up north. It amazes how while we may share land mass and history we are also different in our mannerisms, speech and cultures. I hate your are so far away from your family at the same time I’m happy you’re here with us. I love your videos and I feel like if we met in person we would have very nice conversations.
The smiling, oversharing, chit chat is like on steroids in the south lol 😂 everyone is nosey but they also really care! Very generous and charitable to help out their brother/sister in time of need. It's a wonderful thing to witness. My Mom is super chatty and my Dad can be when he's in his element (for example, he's more likely to talk to a stranger at a fishing store than a clothing store,). I'm a little bit of both of them!

I took a week break off from work 1 time in 3 years and everyone bitched and complained and made me feel so guilty and then that said person took a week off a couple weeks later. I call in so little I don't even know how to do it and always struggle calling in when I need to. and when I did call in the last time I got yelled at for doing it wrong and not being at work and felt really bad about it. Though my fiances sister was in the hospital and we had to trade in our car bc the one we had kept breaking down and we couldn't drive it anymore. so I just don't even call in anymore.

This is my first video to see of you. Loved it! Hope your parents and family are safe and doing well.
Not sure how I came across this, but glad I did. I visited Russia (Klein, Yaroslavl, Moscow and St. Petersburg) back in 1992. I was part of a sports program. We lived with families in their homes. I loved it. I was 17yo. We were treated respectfully and they took great interest in us (the majority of us were black). Most people smiled back when I smiled at them, somehow I gained a "boyfriend". The host family girls were trying to tell me to not be friends with him because he was married. They waited until we met up with one of the other girls that spoke English to do so. 😊We ate at the Mcdonald's in Moscow as a favor to our Russian friends (at that time it was very expensive for them but we wanted to pay). I did not like the food but I was hungry. You may not know this but McDonald's food in the US is not the same as back then. It is no longer made fresh. I worked at Mcdonald's as a teen and all food was made straight from the grill. My restaurant was the last one to switch over to a Q'ing (don't know the technical name) system. The food is made then kept in holding. Basically the food is not as fresh and tastes like microwave food now. For treating colds, we actually do both hot and cold treatments. Teaching kids sign language, it is actually easier for a kid (Infant on) to communicate in sign language then speaking verbally. It has to do with their development. We used sign language in the daycare I worked in over 20 years ago. As my experience in Russia was positive and memorable, it breaks my heart to see what is happening today. I hope things get better.
The only time I "treated" a sickness with a popsicle/ice cream was when I had strep as a kid and I wouldn't eat anything else lol
Other than that I eat soups/stews and use steam/humidifier to open up my sinuses.
Lexie Lyn when i have a sore throat I alternate between cold and heat. They both feel good
same here, i think the only time i ate something cold to help was when i got my wisdom teeth taken out and my mom got me a milkshake

Another thing I noticed is that Americans love to go outside with their hair wet after a shower but whenever I dared to do that my mom would panic and say никуда не пойдёшь, заболеть хочешь?! 😅
I'm Australian and I used to try and go to sleep with wet hair and my grandmother would say the same thing 😂

Hilarious! I laughed out loud when you spoke about shoppers making small talk with clerks. I remember seeing a TV report - maybe during the 60’s - about shopping in Moscow at a famous department store, the glory of the Workers’ Paradise, and seeing this long line of customers, mostly women, who looked like they had been waiting there in the same line since the 19th Century, glum, not chatting, not smiling, and the clerk who was behind the counter looking like a prison warden thinking, “So what crime have you committed TODAY?”

Many times a total stranger may reply that they have experienced exactly what you have been through. After I've shared what I consider a personal statement, it helps to know that there's always someone to turn to for comfort if needed and it will be kept confidential if I want.
When I ask, “How are you?,” I really want to know. I actually care how they are doing. I talk to service people because I appreciate them, and I care about them too. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

I love this video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the differences. I smile at people all the time, and I actually do mean it. I also say sorry all the time... it’s really just another way of saying “pardon me” or “excuse me” and I alway mean that too. I do agree that everyone says “how are you?” And they don’t really want the real answer. You are suppose to just say “I’m fine. How are you?” That’s always bugged me too. I use to really tell how I am but you’re right in that people would be uncomfortable with that. Haha! Just today I was at the farmers market and the vendor was visibly stressed. I said, “looks like you’re having a stressful time trying to set up.” He told me about how his boss made him hurry and pack up the truck and fight the traffic to get 2 hours away to set up for another farmers market and that he had already worked a full day in the other town. That most days he has to work two of them and it’s a lot of work to set up and break down each one before and after. I felt so bad for him. He looked very stressed. Like he could cry. I could see all the pain of his hard life ready to burst from him. I wish I could help him. He’s an immigrant working very hard for very little money like so many in this country. They get ignored and taken advantage of. And you’re right... this is a work crazy culture that’s unhealthy for people.
