THANK YOU FOR THIS REACTION. MR. THOMAS WAS MY MUSIC TEACHER WHEN I BECAME A HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN IN 1996 AT MIAMI NORLAND SENIOR HIGH. HE WAS SUCH A GREAT PERSON TO BE AROUND, AND I’LL ALWAYS CHERISH HIM FOR THE MEMORIES THAT I HAVE & THE LOVE FOR MUSIC THAT HE HELPED ME DISCOVER. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
You’ll never know the sense of hope he gave us when we heard this. It’s irritating that Jay and Amber ruined the feeling of the intro. Vietnam war was still killing tens of thousands every day. Protests and riots of the 60s lasted through the 1960s into the 70s. The Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain separated the free world and the USSR threatened to end us. So much fussin n fightin. This song from beginning to end stopped us dead in our tracks for at least a couple of minutes and wish for peace☮️✌️
Such a good song and so appropriate for todays world.
Perfect for today 💜
Just Wow, I’d forgotten just how great this song is; musically, lyrically and in messaging. This was both an anti Vietnam war song to improve race relations!
As a 72 year old white guy, this just literally brought tears to my eyes. It makes me sad to think how close we came over the decades and somehow we made a needless U-turn
It was AMAZING!
I thought the same thing. A lot of things that were fought for and painfully getting better… then for hate to be revived and revved up all over again. Edit: As a 69 yr old Hispanic “Chicana”
me too. I agree with everything you say as a 71 year old black guy.
It will take decades to repair the damage Trump and the Republicans have done to society and the environment.
Timmy Thomas just passed on March 11, 2022. We are losing a lot of the great 70s artists.. recently. In February we lost Donny Gerard who say the lead on Skylarks Wildflower, a song I hope Jordan and Amber give a listen to, another hit from 1972, same as this song.
RIP Timmy Thomas. He just passed away this month aged 77. Sadly this song is so important again.
The intro for the album version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by The Temptations is around 4 minutes before any vocals come in. It was also common for songs to be long, all the way up to 25 minutes which is all that could fit on one side of a record before it would start to lose sound quality. In some cases the song might continue on side 2. There was also the long talking intro that singers like Issac Hayes, Barry White, & Bobby Womack would do. One example is "Be For Real" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
walk on by is a classic and good example.
Wow. 😮 Cool facts.
I haven’t heard this song forever!! Such a great voice, and that beat makes you groove! An important message that is relevant anytime, anywhere!! I love this song!! Thanks for a great one, for sure!!
♥️The old white woman
This was one of those hidden gems from a one hit wonder. Let's pump up this thing with some funk like "Jungle Boogie" by Kool and the Gang, "Let it Whip" by the Dazz Band, "Slippery When Wet" by the Commodores and "Sun is Here" by the Sun Band.
All the things you described in this was the reason it was a hit !!!! PARTY ON WAYNE!!
Never heard of him
Party on Garth
Very cool old school R&B. Sade did a remake in the late 80s.
She did an amazing cover of this tune!
@@Roswell1957 correctamuno! I belive I've also heard a version by Steve Winwood.
Drake was heavily inspired by this for hotline bling as well I believe
Sade did a fabulous job at covering this classic
@@MonaghanNiamh96Yup. Drake Hotline Bling Samples Timmy Thomas Version Of Why Can't We Live Together.
Santana and Steve Winwood did a duet of this. Check it out, very good version.
You should hear William Devaughn "Be Thankful For What You Got".....diamond in the back...sunroof top...😀
I was just about to suggest this when I saw your comment. They should also consider Curtis Mayfields "Movin on Up"
@@murtheblur Omg.....Curtis is the man!!! Freddie's Dead, Superfly, Future Shock and don't forget Pusherman
YES!
I loved that song as a kid , I do remember we always played the long version.
I’m showing my age because I very much remember this song and I loved it then and I love it now
No horns, just masterfully played organ!
Talk about dusting off an oldie! Great choice! Timmy did have a handful of hits, but this was his only big one (hitting #1 in 1972). He also had R&B hits with "What Can I Tell Her", "People are Changin'", and "Gotta Live a Little Love (Ten Years After)."
💜
The live video is so much better, watching his feet on those organ pedals is just incredible. They lyrics are always worth the wait... God I love this guy, and this song! Thank you!
One of my fav ol' R&B tunes from my youth.
This should be an anthem for the world right now 🙏🏻
Oh..,.this brings back lots of memories. So many clubs and a beautiful lady.
Sade had a hit with this song, and Steve Winwood covered it too.
We will have to get to those one day!
Every noise in that song he made on the organ with pedals and keys.
Welcome aboard, youngsters! Yes, this is a wonderful song and I've loved it since I was in Jr. High School in 1974. I also love how the singer Sade performs her rendition of this song.
This song stay playing on the radio seems forever. Great message.
Isn't that the sample used in "Hotline Bling" by Drake?
You have to react to Dennis Edwards (ex Temptations) singing "Don't Look Any Further" Jay, I think you'll be surprised!
I thought they would recognize this from Drake too
I LOVE THIS ONE...it was so different and just hypnotized me in the day...
YYYAAAAYYY!! My Suggestion,, I Knew You Both Would Enjoy It & The Message That's Even More Important Today.
William DeVaughn "Be Thankful For What You Got"..An Absolutely Smooth Soul Groove.
Another casualty of 2022 - Timmy Thomas is not a true one hit wonder in the US though this is by far his most successful release. This is the only song he is known for in the UK, and everywhere else, but what a fantastic legacy to leave us all. Great song then and wonderful to hear it again today. The message is universal and for all time. It was needed when released but it's definitely needed just as much now!
The song is notable for being recorded in mono; its sparse, stripped-down production, features a Lowrey organ, bossa nova-style percussion from an early rhythm machine, and Thomas's passionate, soulful vocal. The single version got more airplay because the longer instrumental coda was considered by many radio stations to be closer to jazz.
RIP Timmy Thomas. (November 13, 1944-March 11, 2022)
An anthem for ages !!!!!!! Love it
I haven't heard of this artist. This is a very cool song! I'll check out more of his music!❤️👍🏻
Check out Sade's version.
@@michaelmacdermott6340 I love Sade!👍
Pretty sure this was a One hit wonder.
@@shanemcconnell358 my all time favorite!
@@jerrybach1234 yeah, but also Sade charted with a cover of it also.
I read somewhere that this was only meant to be a demo, but it ended up being the released version. I'm glad, because it's got this raw honesty that makes it really special. I believe it was all done on an organ which had a built-in drum machine.
Where did you get this request? I have never heard this song or heard of this artist, and this is my era!
This song was popular when I was in high school; haven't heard it since then. Thanks for the memory!
This song is timely in today's crazy world. More than just a song..its a meditation.
I loved this song! I'm a huge fan of '60s and '70s soul and R & B, and I'm honestly shocked that I've never heard this amazing song until today. The drumming even sounded like a precursor to '80s and '90s hip-hop! I would be very surprised if this song has not been sampled by many hip-hop artists. Utterly brilliant, and so poignant and moving!
Thanks for recting to this great song by Timmy Thomas. Its one of my favs and underappreciated
He he....forgot all about this tune! Very rare and obscure
I was 13, this was on the radio and it was everything. ❤️😁
This is the very first single i bought when i was a teenager. 👏
The intro, though long, is iconic.
70's Soul is just the best ❤️ Please give Ronnie Dyson a listen his big hit was " when you get right down to it " Amber will love it ❤️
💜
This Classic Will Hit You Different,, Timbuk 3
"Life Is Hard" (Official Music Video)
An Uplifting Feel Good Classic,, The Blackbyrds "Walking In Rhythm"
What you are listening to is a true artist on music the message is in the music something that is missing today no passion
Thus song is very fitting fir today just as it was then. Love this song!!!!
When I listen to this song I have to do it in the dark and I have to be dancing. I was so happy when I found this song about 20 years ago.
One of the greatest songs ever. Sade did a really good cover of it. And Nicole did a nice duet with Timmy Thomas in the 80's....New York eyes.
Gods Rest Timmy Thomas your message is True
Congas, bass and organ, assorted percussion also, sweet !
The shorter single version was the one we all heard on the radio. He recorded this in his home. He was a Government employee at the time.
The vast majority of people don't hate. The hate gets the press. Wanna live in harmony - don't read/watch the news.
Beautiful and powerful song. Sade, did a cover of this song, equally wonderful. She did a fantastic job!
This record was produced by TK records, they employed a young unknown keyboardist named Harry Wayne Casey. Although he was not playing on this track there are certain elements you can hear in his music once the McCraes gave him a break. The McCreas were also part of TK
Whoa! Had totally forgotten about this great tune! Thanks for the reminder. Great reaction.
One man, one B3, one drum machine.
I suggest Luther Vandross/ Gregory Hines -There’s Nothing Better Than Love ( Official Video) A great love song.
There were a lot songs from the late 60's and early 70's that were popular with the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
This particular song made reference to "no more war" and called for peace and love to, and of, everybody.
If you keep in mind the societal "times" going on in America during those years, it can explain the meanings of many songs, i.e, The Doors, This Is The End, CCR's Fortunate Son... the rich and connected "sons" were many times, first in line to get draft deferments so they didn't have to "Run Through The Jungle" (another CCR song). Sooooo many songs.
Drake sampled this song for Hotline Bling. RIP Timmy Thomas
A MUST HEAR,, Los Lonely Boys "Heaven" (Official Music Video)
Loved this song as a teenager but didnt remember who it was by,.....now I know! Thanks Guys!
Oh my gosh I haven't thought about this song in years!!! I love it and thank you for sharing💖💖💖
There was no band playing instruments, it was just Timmy with an organ that had a drum sound effect you could program to keep the beat in different time signatures. Sade also does an excellent version of this song.
Like the instrumental in the beginning for sure…. Relaxing…. Didn’t know if heard it til the same note on the organ…. Yes! I have remember now! Didn’t hear it often … will put on my playlist! Thanks for choosing it!!
TRUST ME On This Classic,,
The Climax Blues Band "I Love You"
Mr. Happy, they also had a great song with 'Gotta Have More Love' from '80. It has nice guitar work in it. I think It's their best song. Enjoy!
@@tmr626 Agreed & Also "Couldn't Get It Right"
I really have good memories at this record. I was about 15 years old then. First time going to the disco. 💕💕
Jimmy Soul - "If You Wanna Be Happy" Hilarious!
I went looking for what kind of organ he used, and ran into a handful of interesting notes on Wikipedia:
"its sparse, stripped-down production features a Lowrey organ, bossa nova-style percussion from an early rhythm machine, and Thomas's passionate, soulful vocal. ... The single version got more airplay because the longer instrumental coda was considered by many radio stations to be closer to jazz. This song is in a form of a Blues couplet, with the first two lines repeated. This song simply gives an antiwar message."
(A coda is basically the prolonged end of a song.)
Oh, and it's recorded in mono, which was not that common by that time.
One of the first artist to use programmed drums …it’s just him and his keyboard….he re-recorded this song again in 2012 with backing vocals and horns
another great soul track is by Sam&Dave called I'm a Soul man you'll love it.👍
Amber you mentioned how much you like childrens choirs. This is Andy Grammer ft PS22 choir they are singing the song Don’t Give Up On Me. I think you will like it. It brings tears of joy to my eyes every time I listen to it.
I remember hearing this song as a kid (dating myself). It's a great song, brings back memories. If you like this sound, you should react to Curtis Mayfield, "Superfly", "Freddie's Dead", "Pusherman" to name a few.
I probably haven't heard this song since the '70s, but I remember it! :)
Growing up in Miami -this is the beginning of that disco sound. George McRae Rock Your Baby and others. Then the Bee Gees came down to record in mid 1970's.
Yes!!!!! Love him and this song! Now you MUST do Tyrone Davis - "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Tome" and " Can I Change my Mind". You will not be sorry!!
You are finding some gems lately. I had always thought this was by War. Imagine back in the day, just hearing this great stuff pop up on the radio, all the time.
Brand new artist to me, too! Looking forward to it!
This Classic Comes With A Powerful Message For Us All,, Ralph McTell "Streets Of London"..A MUST HEAR!!
One man band, Love it👈🏻☝🏻💯❤️
Thank you. I have never heard this song. What a treat
Thx a million! So huge, so insane! This song brings back a bunch of memories. A that time, the whole song: voice, rendition, melody and lyrics were hugely addictive to me, and today it's the same. Timmy has a an insane voice. The Santanaesque arrangements are irresistible. Too bad that today the lyrics are still relevant (war in Ukraine)
I am 70 now, so I was a teenager in the 60’s and early 70’s. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I came across the song "Grinnin in Your Face" last night and it kept me up for a couple of hours thinking of Will Smith and myself and the human condition ...and of course, Chris Rock. That man impressed me. Oddly current.
Why Can't We Live Together is way up there on my favorites list. Sade has a great version.
I love it when you guys tak about a song having a long opening. Not to correct you but the opening is just as much a part of the song as the lyrics, chorus, etc, and it wouldn't be the song without every part
I have a suggestion the squad will like. The SYLVERS- Hot Line its on YT extended version.
Omg I loved loved loved this song
Please react to Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie singing "Unforgettable" she is live and he's on a screen, it's unbelievable how good it is.
Yes that would be great
I remember this song. I loved it.
Never heard this before. Very cool song!!!
wow...here come the memories
A very 😎 song from the 70’s…❤️
Woah have not heard this before
Great music
This is the first song that you’ve reacted to that I hadn’t ever heard before….
Just saw he passed away 18 days ago. Rest in Peace
Prayers
The 70s weren't all dancing and disco. Quite a few artists and groups were asking hard questions, seeking raise consciousness and break through the noise and turmoil of life to so that we can see each other as equals, as human. This was in the face of a lot of societal pressure to keep us separated by race, class, and gender.
My first exposure to him was in the Philippines, and I heard his song "Dying Inside to Hold You" on the radio in a taxi. That was over a decade ago. It's a great song and really popular over there to cover. Definitely worth checking out. Not sure why it disn't take off anywhere else. Probably because it was released in 1990 and audiences no longer remembered him.
Hello from wisconsin never heard this before I was 2yrs old when it came out
Elvis Costello "Everyday I Write The Book" (Official Music Video)
LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!
First time I haven’t heard of the artist before on here. I think I remember some versions of this back in the day.
