- In Part 2, Steve joins his friend Barbara in Juneau who shows him the in and outs of finding “hooters.” Tromping through Southeast Alaska rainforest, Steve and Barbara discover a mutual fondness for an unconventional hunt. Barbara concludes the hunt with a beachside meal of fettuccine a la sooty grouse.

That confusion and not-having-a clue-ness was so genuine. Even an expert like Steve can’t know everything. So great.
One of my favorite episodes. I loved the admission when this originally aired that she absolutely wore the crew out with her pace. 100% badass.

Steve has had some smart people on the show. But I don't know if he's ever had someone as dialled in to one critter as Barb is to grouse.

@@forestcityfishing4749 because it's not a common western big game hunting or bird hunting technique. It's not spot and stalk, road hunting, flushing/pointing with dogs, still hunting, baiting, calling, sitting in a blind... it's listening, knowing and observing.
Yeah she looked in the trees, but she knows how to locate and then look in the trees.
Not all of us can hunt grouse as well as you and Barb can.

I'm impressed with Barb's ability to discern where the sound is coming from, ability to gage distance and direction. Very cool.
There's no substitute for experience to develop one's Spidey Sense. She's cool as a cucumber from decades of refinement.

So fun watching Steve be a wide eyed novice. He looks completely perplexed when Barbara is so nonchalantly confident. This is entertainment.
I've seen Steve hunt bears, deer, hogs, sheep, elk but this little bird is some of the best I've seen yet. And miss Barb is fantastic.
these last two episodes might've been the two best MeatEater episodes ever. Absolutely fantastic, just shows that it doesn't always have to be a big trophy that you're going after to make great memories and experiences.
I always enjoy your episodes, but wow, this was astounding. A perfect trifecta - You, Barb and Sootie Grouse.
She's truly an amazing person and hunter. Now she can say she's the mentor to Steve

I used this episode as a way to subtly show my 7 yr old daughter that "girls can hunt, too"!
She will be going deer hunting with me this Fall! I can't wait!

As another female hunter, I absolutely love that the next generation is coming out hunting to ❤ I hope she keeps it up. As much as the boys are fine to hunt with, and they’re the ones I grew up hunting with, it’s always nice to have some ladies around!

That was amazing to watch. Something gratifying by watching a very experienced hunter (Steve) adopt the student role and learn from Barb.
As a birder, I can vouch for the technique that Barb's following ... esp to spot "ventriloquist" bird species. It is just like glassing a hillside... but much more difficult in a way, due to the awkward angles

That is now one of my favorite episodes. Barb is amazing with how calm she is and how knowledgeable she is. Her prep for the food looked great
The call of a sooty grouse sounds like a cell phone on vibrate, while it's stuck, out of reach, in the crack of the couch.
I remember Steve going crazy … Barb made it look so easy. The best episode!

I would definitely suggest inviting Barb on another episode. So cool and down to earth. She's a star and didn't even know how much people would absolutely love her.
For anyone who enjoyed these two episodes as much as I did and wants more insight on why Steve was struggling (in spite of his excellent ability) check out the following quote from an experienced Sooty hunter.
"Occasionally a hoot will be loud and booming-if you’re close you can sometimes feel it in your chest-and the next hoot will be faint and quiet and sound like it is several trees away. Don’t be fooled! It is not two grouse hooting at each other, but instead one single bird hooting in different directions and the hoot is echoing off a nearby tree. This is why they’ve often been compared to ventriloquists.
Don’t give up unless it stops hooting; once they go quiet, they can become almost impossible to spot. If a grouse does stop hooting it may be able to see you and be nervous. They will rarely fly away when nervous"
Poor Steve was walking circles all over hell thinking a bunch of birds were messing with him and didn't know if they were 10ft or a mile away. Meanwhile he could have been walking right past the bird in the tree. Those birds took him for a ride and could have been up there watching him walk in circles. LoL
When Steve finds the animal and asks someone else if they have the shot you know that person is a true expert.
This is the episode that made me a forever fan! Every show always has an episode that makes you realize that it’s for you! When Steve was humble enough to fail onscreen and admit that he just needs help with this hunt and came back next year with a humble woman directing him I wanted to not only see every future episode but every past episode too! Well done Steve!
This made me admire steve more than I did before he is never afraid or to prideful to admit when he doesnt know something and is more than willing to let others take the lead and learn.
Barb's good people. A young man could find himself a young Barb and have a good life.
I usually like watching big game episodes where Steve hunts elk or bear, but this one is a gem

These 2 are in my top 5 favourite episodes of Meateater. The forest is so beautiful along with the contrast in hunts. Barb is awesome. What an amazing hunter and so amazing to be hunting alone in that topography alone. I really enjoyed the dynamic between them and how open Steve was to learn, just awesome episodes.
This is one of my favorite episodes, Steve reminds me of me asking my mentors a million questions, and just being in awe of both them and nature.

Funny fact: Barb looks like one of my high school science teachers LOL soft spoken and very humble/subtle but if you listen to what she says it’s gold!
i've watched all episodes i could get my hands on, more then once, but this one in particular is just special, my favourite episode by far, i am a big fan and admirer of barb and i wish for a re-do of this episode everytime i watch it, just plain awesome :)

To watch a master hunter become perplexed by sound is quite possibly the most entertaining hunting I've ever watched. BTW I'm half deaf. So I can completely relate to Steven here.

There is just something about Alaskans in general. They are truly special people. You couple that with the place itself and you’re really are open to a special time. Thanks for sharing this place and hunt

I just listened to the podcast from this hunt, September 17th 2015, show's how much work they put in the make sure each episode is perfect. Love it.

i love how he spatchcocks the grouse, i find that to be my favorite way to cook them, here in british columbia i get a lot of blues and ruffles. fair number of spruces too early season so yummy! forest chickens are the best
Barb reminds of a my boss who was a biologist . She was in her late 50s when I worked with her hiking literally everywhere like ridge to reef she’s awesome.

Steve is a good shot but I saw some breast shots in there with simply a 22. cal. and probably the best of optics. I'm no W.B. hickock but I have seen the art and science of shooting/

Ok. I live in Alaska and have hunted all my life. I'd never even heard of a Sooty grouse! Ruffed, Blue, Spruce, and Ptarmigan have all been on my list. This is one of the coolest hunts ever.
