"Da tempeste il legno infranto" from Giulio Cesare - Kangmin Justin Kim a.k.a. Kimchilia Bartoli

- This summer, I got to be a part of what is possibly my absolute favorite production of an opera ever: David McVicar's Glyndebourne production of Giulio Cesare in Egitto. I fell it love with it the moment I saw it back in 2007 and hoped I'd be able to be a part of the it someday. In 11 short years, my career has taken me straight into the middle of the action-packed production!
I wanted to commemorate this unforgettable summer with a tribute video, singing and dancing to the iconic Cleopatra's number, shooting it at all the places we rehearsed, took breaks, ate lunch, picnicked during the long intervals, had drinks, laughed, laughed more, drank more....
Thank you David for making my dream come true; Andrew "The Gorgeous" for the most original, beautiful, and fun choreography; Colm for teaching me Nireno AND Cleopatra choreography (although I might have known bits and pieces of them already since 10 years ago, but you definitely made it all clean and presentable to public); Brigitte Reiffenstuel for the gorgeous costumes; Florian for playing on piano so beautifully while transposing; Sirena and Agur for being 100% onboard with this silly idea and running around all over the grounds of Glyndebourne whenever you were offstage, trying to get some nice shots; Morgan for being the best/chill assistant director for the cover show, Pureum 넌 말 안해도 알지 ㅎㅎㅎ?; Nick and Ali for being the cutest dance partners that Cleopatra's servant could ever have....
Love you all, and I miss you already. I hope to see you all again some day soon and do more silly things.

I've lost count of how many times I've watched this and shared it. Please please please please do some more like this one! Like the world in general, the world of classical music can well do with performances imbued with levity such as this.

@@robertcook4705Just listened to her (again). This one's quicker and more consistently so. And I prefer the "energy" of this one. Not to "diss" Julia! She's a god! But I think this one comes closest to my idea of how it should go.
I honestly think it should be faster and even more energetic, personally. One should be breathless afterwards, like you've been on an intense rollercoaster. But that's just me. I like VERY vigorous classical music. It's why I love Toscanini
I can't help commenting. Kim not only has a wonderful voice, nowadays comparable to Franco Fagioli's and Bejun Mehta's ones, not only he reveals himself as a real performer, mixing dance, acting and singing, but if he conceived all this he is a pure genius. A camp style opera with the glance of modern video makers and an hilarious quote of the musical golden age. So great from any point of view. I'm not surprised he is not very known here in Italy…. :(

Vocally this is absolutely the equal of any other recorded Da tempeste, including Sutherland and Sills. It is a wonderful rendition which in the end must have been marvelous in the theatre.

He sings this better than almost any other singer on this site. Certainly his diction is far superior to almost all and the light approach that was taken here to the staging certainly does not violate the musical beauty presented. Keep on singing, playing, and posting please
A bold claim and as these things are a matter of taste almost certainly wrong. The camp prancing, his vocal style and plinky piano accompaniment certainly makes for a different interpretation. Fortunately Handel’s legacy is strong enough to survive the odd insult.
Ok.... I just came home from the Wiener Staatsoper doing Julius Caesar. I hadn't checked the names of the singers (except Cecilia Bartoli) , I just assumed a woman was playing Sextus as always. This is a soprano part. Towards the end of the opera he took his shirt off and I was just.... wait a second.... what???
Beyond impressive. Fantastic performance from all singers this evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

This video is everything. I saw the McVicar production when it came to the Met and loved it. I had already been obsessed "al lampo dell'armi", making an electronic arrangement of it to use in a Moliere production I directed. I can't believe how wonderful this is. More More More!!!!

This is my favorite production of Giulio Cesare and your take on "Da Tempeste" is hilarious and extremely well done! Bravo! I wish that I could have seen the opera live at Glyndebourne. Based on your singing here, I'm sure that you were a terrific Nireno!

Hilarious. Interpretatively this has zero to with the character of Cleopatra… but this “No no Nanette” version is a total hoot. Vocally it is rather perfect. He would sound strong as the male characters in Guilio Cesare.

great voice , choreography? why are you copying Danielle de Niese choreography, make your own, I don't like this choreography , as a baroque dancer from the period of Handel this is not right sorry to say, maybe a fusion of baroque and modern would be better, but this is so musical theatre, does not suit the period
