  • Its hard to understate just how valuable alchemy is within Skyrim, a strong alchemy tree unlocks so many other doors within the game, whether it be making your overall character stronger, allowing you to challenge yourself on harder difficulties, or even just a way of making the experience more immersive, its an incredibly rich skill that every player should explore. So I wanted to pull this guide together to hopefully give newer players some guidance as to why you should brush up on your potion making. And if you’re a veteran of the game, you may still learn something new. Welcome to my alchemy guide to Skyrim!

Very nice alchemy overview, Mike! I'm sure youll get a ton of recipe suggestions in the comments-here are two of my mainstay recipes, both for their potency and ease of gathering ingredients. (The first is close to one you had in the video)
Wizard's Brew: red mountain flower+jazbay grapes+moon sugar: three effect potion (fortify magicka, restore magicka, increase magicka regeneration). Both the red mountain flowers and jazbay grapes are fairly common and can be grown.
My favorite poison is Canis Root+Imp Stool+Scathecraw. If you wait until you have the 'green thumb' perk, you can gather an absurd amount of scathecraw without having to leave Raven Rock, with canis root and imp stool both being able to be grown.
Lichor and Steel Blue Entoloma are two of the RC ingredients great for magicka-related potions (you can grow Entoloma, unlike most of the Rare Curios ingredients), and Chokeberry (RC) can make some very nasty poisons.
    Cheers!

Before the creation club made farming so easy, my go-to money potion was Blue flower+Lavender+Hanging Moss. For every new character, I'd run from Whiterun to Gjukar's Monument picking the blue flower and lavender. In Solitude I'd get the hanging moss in the catacombs. This would give me the money needed to skill training and unlock fast travel to the final location for the Mara quest.

What a great guide! I've never dabbled with Alchemy before while playing since levelled potion drops for most needs (restore health, magicka, fortify weapon skills, etc) are fairly common in game, but some of those multi-effect potions look enticing - perhaps I'll give Skyrim another go with this new found knowledge.

Great work, Mike. Alchemy is one of the most overlooked aspects of Skyrim, but it's so useful I never make a build without using and abusing it.
Maybe I'm the only one, but I quite like a mix of positive and negative effects, because it's free money from traders. You don't have that "should I keep it" dilemma.
By the way, it's a very easy mistake to make, but "curios" has the same pronunciation as "Cheerios" at the end of the word.

Thank you! Yeah I was firmly in that camp of overlooking it initially. Barely dipped my toe in the water on my PS3 version. When SE came to PS4 I dabbled a bit more then, but its only really the last few years on AE that I use it to the fullest now. It's been helped by the new homes I think and survival mode. It's a lot easier to grow than it used to be, and survival sort of pushes you down the hunter gatherer route anyway.

In my first ever playthrough I was obsessed with alchemy. I would pick up every ingredient and buy most every ingredient I came by. I had THOUSANDS of ingredients, literally, by level 60. Any quest requiring ingredients was always a breeze. I could make any potion in the game whenever. Took me a long time but I enjoyed it so much. I also had the Hearthfire DLC my first playthough so you know I made a whole Alchemy Garden inside.

When you eventually reach 100 in alchemy, enchanting, smithing and your chosen armor and weapon skill you will reach a ceiling. When playing lower difficulties your power ceiling will far exceed the level scaling in the world, however when on higher difficulties this will not be the case. If you intend to go the distance on legendary you may need to break through the designed power ceiling, this can ruin the fun of Skyrim if you go too far - so don’t do that. Assuming you can handle self imposed limitations then I suggest the fortify restoration potion loop. In effect you can raise your alchemy skill almost infinitely, the limitation being your game crashing because the game can’t handle potion or enchantment effects this powerful (specifically this powerful ‘2,147,483,647%’). There’s no reason to go so high beyond the novelty so like I said self imposed limitation is the key. There may come a point where you use the rare curios to buff smithing and you still end up only doing chip damage. That’s the point where you pursue fortify restoration potion looping. I won’t explain the step-by-step there’s a ton of info out there. I think everyone should one-hit Alduin with a wooden sword at least once for the novelty, or some other example of absurdity.
Good video too, I didn’t know about some of those combinations and I’ve played this game a silly amount. I enjoy the fortify destruction potions the most. Magic damage falls off late game so I’d be lost as a mage without glowing mushroom and nightshade. You can grow them all with ease at the various Hearthfire homes which makes those ingredients stupidly valuable in my eyes. I also love that swamp fungal pods and canis root produce paralysis because they are also super easy to grow at home. Those blue butterfly wings tend to be a bottleneck for me I do tons of enchanting.

So if you master pickpocket and Alchemy you can basically level any skill to level 95 easy by pickpocketing a paralsis potion and then taking the gold from said master level trainer then using the books but personally I'd have a companion pick the books up and read them from lv 95 on ward. Specifically Archery is easy to level with Alea being a free trainer to 75. Then just train with a master pickpocket him(theives guild is a good remorse free place) then use the skill books and go to this one lady that used to live in helgan she can train you from 95 to 100.

    • @mike-thegamingdad
      @mike-thegamingdad  Před 11 měsíci +1

The discovery of effects is achieved by mixing ingredients which share the same effects. So you can do this by mixing 2 ingredients yes and discover all 4 effects of a particular ingredient eventually. Using 3 ingredients at a time you are just more likely to discover a match, as you have 12 possible effects vs 8. And you are more likely to create potions that have multiple effects that way as well as the chances of finding 2 or more matches at once is higher than if you only use 2 ingredients

The East Empire Expansion mod synergies well with alchemy I've found as you can give potions for them to sell on your behalf for a cut of the profits. I handed out one batch of potions of waterbreathing across the many East Empire vendors recently across Skyrim in that mod, 1 potion had a value of about 75-80k, and I was a millionaire within a few in game days. I remember how I scorned alchemy when I first started playing many years ago. “I’m not collecting/eating all this stuff!” LOL! Oh boy, did I have an eye opening experience when I gave it a go. Really did make my gameplay so much better and a lot more fun.

Yeah I was the same, a massively under utilised skill for years. Even when SE came out I still wasn't doing a lot with it, only in the last few years that I've made entire builds centered around it 😁
