Psygnosis rose from the ashes of Imagine, seemingly with the aim to put everything that wrong right again. Which they did, with interest. This is the story of their dominance over an untold amount of classic games: Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast, Wipeout and everything inbetween. No company looked to the future or wowed the crowd as much as Psygnosis did back then...Enjoy!

I've seen over the last two days or so mabey this week out of all the videos I've seen so far this is by far my favorate one dude!. Hope to see the history of other publishers that came from the 4 bit and 8 bit era and where they are in todays dire cash grabbing industry. 11 out of 10. I't really took me back to my school days this video. how could you forget the soundtrack to formula one 97? it had joe satriani on it lols.
Hey Kim, Tim Wright (music composer on many Psygnosis titles) has seen this vid hes given you high props for your work, he posted it on his Facebook
He posted a comment further up the page!
I think a lot of it was living through it. There's a lot of stuff that gets largely lost to history despite being very well publicised back in the day. I recall a lot of the stuff that Guru Larry features for example from the various gaming magazines of the time (I still have them somewhere) but for some reason it's nigh impossible to find this information on the internet, at least not easily.
As an American, Wipeout introduced me to EDM at age 16 and it's a part of my DNA to this day.
I was definitely considerably younger than you (still in my formulative years) but it got me started down the path of EDM as well.
Ah,ah....
Firstly, that was highly entertaining! I learned stuff I didn't know, or perhaps forgotten, LOL!Secondly, wow... a huge chunk of my life right there. I might feel old and decrepit, but I have some great memories to keep me warm, as I sit in front of the fire with a blanket over my knee, and a hot cup of cocoa. Top stuff! ;o)
Hell yeah, Tim Wright! Thanks for the comment, and thank you for all the awesome music. :)
Thanks for making the video... can't have been a quick job! ;o)
Hi, Tim! Huge fan of your work ;) If you're willing to watch another couple of videos about the mighty Psygnosis, you're welcome to visit my channel ;) Cheers!
Oh wow, it's you. I loved playing Body in Motion in 2097, so chill to race to. Thanks for your work
Thanks for enjoying! ;o)
Why are television documentaries almost always so bad when you can knock out programmes of *this* quality so often and all by yourself!?
Because CZcams uncover the real Masters.
Because Kim Justice can say what he wants while TV stations are on a different legal layer and you want the money of those publishers in future maybe.
I know this is a very late reply, but this is why I stopped watching TV. People on youtube, with a motivation and talent I could never match, make much, much better content than TV execs would ever allow to be put out. Better researched, more interestingly produced, more down to earth, and funnier. People are surprised when I say I don't bother with TV, but I don't feel hard done by. At all!
@@cwxdaf152 A lot say that people wouldn't work if they had no monetary motivation, but so many people are out there creating quality content just from passion alone. I realise that these CZcamsrs are getting revenue (now at least) but none of them started doing this for the money, and probably still would be doing it if they weren't getting paid.
programmes 😭
I won a Psygnosis competition once, I got whisked (by my dad) to the exotic location of, erm, the local paper's office car park, where the lucky winners could get a free game from the then-current Pysgnosis lineup. I got Lifeforce Tenka, a gruesome and sometimes confusing FPS.
Anyway, I didn't actually know they'd been responsible for this many of the great games of the mid-late(ish) 90's. Their 1997 lineup and my Christmas list for that year probably had a lot in common!
As a child of the 80's, the goosebumps I got when I hear the Shadow of the Beast music :D
Have the Psygnosis owl tattoo on my arm, to remind how much the intro video to Shadow of the Beast 2 on Amiga scared the shit out of me as a child!
Now that's dedication!!!
Awesome!
American here, WipEout was _the_ game that sold me on a PS1. I mean there were tons of great looking games, but I NEEDED WipEout.
WipEouT is AMAZING. Its one of the few games that I can remember organizing my life around, and was intensely hooked on it for a short, but frenzied, time-period.
I loved the soundtrack. It all came together to feel like a game that had been bespoke designed for me.
Im sure, if we extrapolate that last sentiment - we would find that many others felt exactly the same as me.
I love WipEouT. WipEouT FuSioN is what I go to these days, on my PS2.
Psygnosis, thank you guys for all the visual excellence of the late 80's and early 90's. Those games and their art made our teenage minds imagine wild and beautiful worlds and made us feel like the owners of god like computers.
Awesome video. Psygnosis will always be one of my favourite developers. Wipeout, destruction derby, colony wars, rollcage and all the rest of the games they published and developed for the ps1 are still close and dear to my heart.
Psygnosis after a rocky start, really stood above the rest in being able to capture your attention and their individual style really stood out, i loved their games on my Amiga.
Nice work, Psygnosis is no doubt one of the most iconic publishers/devs in Europe. I kinda disagree about Brian the Lion, it was a technical masterpiece considering it's an A500 game. The amount of colors, parallax scrolling and pseudo mode 7 effects was simply amazing.
Great show!As a young teen back in 89,I adored Psygnosis.Ive never had the same excited feeling of game shopping since those days. Walking into a game shop knowing you'll be buying a Psygnosis title and seeing rows of their beautiful game boxes! So many favourites, but my initial fav was Blood Money.SOTB was just mind blowing back then. The sound design, the graphics with large enemy sprites. All these things that are totally taken for granted these days, left us jaw dropped back then! I sold a lot of my shit over the years but just always held on to my original Psygnosis games/boxes..you just cannot sell or tip those boxes;works of art, easily.
One thing I do remember Psygnosis for is the amazing artwork. I had SotB2 I think, on my Amiga 2000, looked great.
That side scrolling shooter with the flying owl, sill looks very good to this day, the graphics are still impressive in my opinion
I agree, Agony would fit perfectly with more atmospheric focused indie games of today.
one of the lead artists on Agony (Franck Sauer) and I believe other developer/s eventually went on to form appeal who made Outcast, (who have actually recently been revived and are making a new Outcast (a remake?) )
might be worth checking out his site he has some post-mortems of his art and roles on games, he has one for Agony, they're pretty interesting (: (especially all the unpublished games and tech demo stuff)
It looks like something you'd see on mobile now. That isn't a bad thing, they're perfectly well suited for that kind of platform.
Yeah. Years later and I still can not get their games out of my head...And nobody can beat their company logo. Just seeing it at the beginning of a game made me smile.
It's the smooth animation!
This is one of the most interesting documentaries I've seen in a really long time...Kudos.
Great memories. Thanks for making this video Kim!
Thumbs up for the Hired Guns. That game was very impressive and atmospheric at the time.
The intro music really got you pumped up
Well this is bloody marvelous Kim. I feel it somewhat goes hand in hand with my DMA Design documentary from the other day (although it wasn't a frickin' HOUR long! - impressive). Maybe we should enter into some sort of partnership where you cover the publisher and I cover the developer and we can all sit back into a state of retro bliss.
Damn! Now I have another channel to subscribe to! :P (Quite Gladly!!! I love me some nostalgia!)
Great idea... Big fans of you both!
I would love that!
I would actually pay to watch that. I'm not exaggerating.
I love both of your content, please join up sometime. :-)
What a fantastic video, thanks Kim.
I recall seeing a rolling Agony demo at Psygnosis' stand at the World of Commodore show at Earls Court sometime in '91. They had it playing on the biggest TV screen there (it was absolutely huge) and I was literally blown away with Tim Wright's music playing over the top which I believe was a track that never made it into the game itself. Wow, what a time it was to be 12 back then!
Psygnosis were by far my favourite video games company in the 90s - good to see their work all put together in this video - excellent work. Thank you.
I love all of your retrospectives on legendary publishers and development studios, but I must say that this one is the best one to date. Superb flow, great script and very in depth without becoming hard to watch and enjoy. Very impressive indeed KJ! Cheers!
Excellent work as usual. Can't wait for the inevitable Bitmap Brothers episode.
Fantastic video. thank you for taking the time to create it!
Your documentaries are phenomenal. Growing up in America, watching your videos are a wake up call to how little I truly know about videogames and how many great titles I havent heard of let alone haven't played. Especially with me being a huuuge fan of licensed games. Thank you for your hard work that makes you one of the top three game documentarings on youtube along with Guru Larry and Slopes Game room. A veritable Justice League of video game video content creators
I really like Unirally, as it was called in the UK (a more approrpriate name since, unless I'm remember wrong, it was more of a time trail than a racer). You progressed in the game by beating your times. Random fact I just found out: according to the wikipedia, DMA were sued by Pixar, who claimed DMA had stolen the unicycle design from their film Red's Dream and they won, so Nintendo had to stop producing Unirally carts after the first run. A bit tragic since, as I say, it was a fantastic game
It's insane how quickly you can make these lengthy, well detailed documentaries. Keep up the good work Kim!
F1 '97 is still one of my all time favourite F1 games. Thank you for the video Kim, and thank you Psygnosis for the memories.
This is a very well done documentary. I normally don't have time to watch hour long videos (hardly get to watch any 2 hour long films and movies) but this is so much good information and a bit of memory jogging therapy. Thank you for taking the time and effort to give us the true background story of Psygnosis and their great contributions to the gaming world.
I've been waiting for you to do this video for years now, and it didn't disappoint! superb stuff and incredibly informative. thanks!
Great as always! I found the overlay information super informative as well.. though I'd have to pause the video momentarily each time to read it as they didn't quite stay up long enough to read them while the video played. Thank you!
Really great video, well presented! Man, I'd totally forgotten about Colony Wars, but this video brought back some memories of me playing that game for weeks on end. And Discworld... I still play that one once a year!
The fact that 3/4 of your subscriber base watched this video shows that you are doing a great job. I just wanted you to know that I deeply appreciate your videos and find them super interesting.
I am an American that owned a Commodore 64 and an Amiga 500, so finding out more about the companies surrounding these childhood memories is an awesome thing. Thank you.
This was great to watch. Being from Kentucky in the U.S. my early gaming life ended up being very british it seems. The c-64, cracktros, demos, the A1000, Fat Agnes, Team 17, Anthrox, trainers and Psygnosis were all common words in my circle of friends for a long period of time. Yes, even in Kentucky. The full intro from Obitus was so amazing for the time.
RIP to the greatest games studio of all time.
Sad isn’t it? What a brilliant studio lost to time, really bugs me how a studio of such quality doesn’t survive. I even love their logo, my favourite ever.
And RIP all the people who made it all happen who are no longer with us - Dave Lawson, Ian Hetherington and, announced recently, John "Grandad" Gibson.
Amazing video as per usual! Great watch, great story, great and in-depth execution! Thank you for sharing! :)
Wow! This is the kind of documentary that I have been waiting for for the last 30 years.
Very well researched, competent & entertaining with the right dose of humour. I love your work. I am really impressed.
Kim, another fantastic put together video. Love your videos and brings back good memories of my gaming life and now as a developer we can learn what makes a good game or a great game. Keep on making these videos...utterly brilliant.
Thanks for these videos. I knew the companies behind some of these, and a little of the backstory, but I had no idea how much was going on sometimes! Great work!
WOW! Loved your overview of Psygnosis! As a young kid with an AMIGA, my memories of DMA Design was Blood Money. Never would have imagined they were also the originators of the GTA series. Among other companies which I immediately recognized in your video... this was amazing history. Thank you for the video.
Hooray, it's finally here! Thank you for all the hard work you do.
Thanks for this wonderful and illuminating documentary Kim. I can honestly say that there isn't a single other CZcamsr's work I look forward to with as much anticipation. All this effusive praise on this channel is thoroughly well deserved.
Absolutely brilliant work Kim, a staggering amount of work has gone into this, I tip my hat in admiration.
Dread to think how long you put into this but I think I speak for every viewer when I say - its brilliant, absolutely brilliant. They volume & quality of your output is fantastic and very rare in my experience. Cheers.
Love all your videos! So well presented and informative :D
What a well-crafted and thoroughly researched documentary you've made here. I tip my hat off to you sir and will be watching some more of your videos.
Incredibly entertaining and informative , Great work sir .
Phew. That was tremendous. You keep improving. That effort recalls the 'Rock Family Tree' programmes that Pete Frame used to do - pointing out all the less-than-obvious connections. Thanks for an hour of entertainment, and a heck of a lot of new knowledge.
This is an incredible documentary. Growing up I fondly remember Psygnosis but I didn't comprehend just how important they were, good times.
The SOB soundtrack is just so timeless. This was a pretty amazing vid, Kim. Really appreciate the effort you put into these.
Its an amazing job Kim is doing. Wow it must take time to find the information and making the videos. Keep it up
Great summary of the legendary studio! Keep up the good work!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. As an early Amiga adopter and playing many psygnosis games back in the day this video fills the back story to what I experienced first hand and tells the story to its conclusion. Very thorough and full of content. Kim Justice gives the unabridged story in an entertaining format! Thank you KJ for all of your research and hard work.
After watching the tyre fire of the latest Neflix series on video games, it's been great to get a little British gaming history through this video, Kim. Small country, but a great amount of talent and creativity! Fun video, and I learnt quite a few new things, thanks!
An hour+ video? I love you so much right now Kim! You made my night.
Nice to see Benefactor getting a bit of praise, I hardly ever see it mentioned as an Amiga classic, I loved it back in the day, had me hooked for a lot of hours! Also spent a lot of time playing Hired guns at my mate's house, 4 players, it was such a blast!
Excellent piece of work. Don't know how I only just got around to watching it. Thank you!
Made me cry loads. Literally my childhood man. Psyg even then blew my mind
Thanks so much for your work mate
wow hands down great video! Psygnosis rocks!
Really great video Kim, i love these videos you make their always full of great information and are always really well presented. Keep up the good work :)
Fantastic. Your stuff has gotten so great over the last year or two. And I know so little about a lot of British stuff. This was very possibly your best yet. Keep it up!
Hands down, best gaming documentary I've ever seen. You're awesome!!!
Great one... However it is missing one of my fave Psygnosis Amiga games that was way ahead its time: INFESTATION! That game wasamazing, and of course as a Psygnosis game in 1990 it was also unforgivingly hard.
Also Psygnosis rereleased another legendary game for the Amiga in Europe: Dungeon Master...
I'd also put in the PS1 game Assault Rigs on that list as well.
Fantastic video Kim! keep them coming :)
Enjoyed the documentary a lot. I spent my childhood and adolescence with the C64 and Amiga and so many of your videos bring back fond memories and provide so interesting background information. Really love your work! Highly appreciated! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Fantastic Work. Loved it. Very informative!
Wonderful video, and a fun jaunt down a memory lane so few of the people in my life are able to do with me. Thank you!
Trully excellent video, it was a real joy to watch! Well done!
I absolutely love these videos, thank you very much Kim!
Criminally under watched channel. Another stonkingly great video!
In all honesty, I struggle to watch an average television program these days.
But I can watch this.
thanks.
Fascinating, thank you so much. I look forward to viewing more of your videos.
Another amazing video. Thank you!
awesome retrospective, nice work!
Amazing video! Thanks for praising F1 97, I have many fond memories of that game! Also loved Discworld 2.
Great video, I'm glad CZcams recommended you to me. I'm always happy to learn about gaming history.
Fantastic in-depth video!
Love the video!! I was always a big fan of Psygnosis' games growing up during the PSX era!
Your documentaries are always interesting and informative keep up the good work Kim
Amazing work once again. made me shed a tear on the close of studio Liverpool with the Agony music on the background... Psygnosis Rulez 4 Ever! :D
holy cow we've got a long one here. I'm settling in for the evening for sure
Impressive video again Kim.
Excellent video. It's bittersweet seeing a reference to Laffer35 since his untimely passing, but I'm glad they left his channel up. He'll continue to be remembered and be a resource for videos like this one.
Shit. I didn't know that. Rest in Peace, Laffer.
I also didn't know it, Damn I loved his longplays and his c64 longplays in particular.
Sadly he took his own life. I only knew him from his channel, the comments section of my channel and Jimplaysgames' channel, but he was always quick with a kind word. Very sad indeed.
What? I didn't knew that either. RIP Laffer, i appreciated your work.
Love this and kept really interesting all the way through x
Some of my favourite games from my childhood. I remember inviting all my school pals over to see Shadow of the beast and then blood Moneys intro. Great video ohhh and Destruction Derby was rightly lorded, I played that for years on my PS1, Love a HD remake of that game.
Great documentary Kim, the quality of your videos is top notch.
Thank you for all your videos! They all remind me so great memories! Wish one day you will do something about the atari ste, i had one when i was younger, with plenty of strange games. Greetings from Belgium!
Fantastic video. So much information and hugely entertaining :)
Thanks again Kim for a great and entertaining documentary on one of the greatest games companies to come from the UK. If it wasn't for Psygnosis giving companies like DMA/Rockstar and Reflections their start in the gaming business we may never of had games such as GTA and Driver along with all the other companies and games that got their start with Psygnosis.
19,108 subscribers and you really deserve a hell of a lot more for the great content you provide Kim.
Bitter sweet. Thank you for making this.
Another quality vid, great work!
very informative and excellent quality in production
Excellent video! Thank you Sir.
amazing work as usual., a one hour documentary!
Really enjoyed this video, and others in the series thanks!
Amazing video Kim, positively epic.
Actually made me slightly sad with how unaware I was of all the earlier games. Growing up in the 90's I was bit late to the gaming party. And even then, I didn't know of much outside games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, PlayStation and N64.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thanks for doing it.
so many awesome games and memories watching, i had forgotten the names of alot of the great games i played a kid on the Amiga, fantastic video thank you so much.
LOVE this channel. Have been watching it now for about a year. My TOP choice for documentaries on CZcams and I prefer them to any other.
