Purchase a serrated edge shovel next time w/ a fiberglass handle--easier; stronger; and won't splinter (like wood) Also, loosen the bottom & bottom sides of the tree root ball a bit prior to planting. # stakes are the very best--you want trunk movement in the wind, of course. Redbuds are GREAT trees ! Happy Planting !!
Fiberglass handles are the strongest and HD has a lifetime warranty on them. If you break, return for replacement. You may want to consider a small 2x4 garden shed (they fit nicely against a fence) for storing garden tools and supplies. It's small, simple and keeps everything dry, organized, and handy in one place IN the garden.
Wow, what a difference that “ simple “ change will make to your yard! Perfection!! Shout out to HE MAN JASON! 😊🇨🇦
Janey that red bud was the perfect choice !! The color really shines !!!
You should see my to do list, what garden doesn't have one. Tree is going to be beautiful.
I've always been told when planting larger plants to back fill the hole with 50% native soil and 50% compost that way the plants roots grow out seeking water otherwise it grows comfortable in it's nice and cozy soil and when the roots reach the native soil they shrink back from stretching out and then they start to grow around each other becoming root bound. Or plant in native soil and put amendments on top so with time they sink down mixing with the native soil. Bet you can't wait for that spring color to arrive. It''s a beautiful tree.
I live in Oklahoma and NOTHING bothers these trees!
Yay that is great to hear! Hopefully its the same here in CA!
That tree is absolutely perfect! What a difference taking out that monster made to your space. Great job Janey!
The tree looks fantastic in your landscape. It brings a new look to the front yard and provides interests plus all that planting space. I hope your to do list keeps growing as I enjoy all your activites.
I love love love the Oklahoma Red Bud! I’m glad you ended up moving it too. It looks great!!
Thanks so much Gayle! I'm so excited to get it in!
I am so pleased you chose to plant a tree Janey! Such a good trio: crêpe myrtle, live oak and Oklahoma redbud. Beautiful!
Thank you so much Colan!!
I transplanted a golden elm tree in torrential rains over this past late autumn purely due to having fixated on the need to see it somewhere else. There was no time to throw in any amendments, I lost my favourite silver earring as a sacrifice to the garden gods during the deluge and it’s probably snugly wrapped within the roots of the tree . I threw some blood and bone down between deluges and now this Spring, it’s been slow going getting started, but it’s covered in buds. I think I e been successful, and I’m sure your Redbud will look magnificent too!
Oh Claudia, you are a TRUE gardener my friend! 😆 I know that feeling when you just HAVE to do something in the garden, right now!! 😆😘
Great video! When you were showing the view from your house I thought a chair or bench would be inviting. I like having chairs throughout the garden at different viewpoints. Just an idea!❤
Oh Cheri! That is a fantastic idea! That would be so pretty up there!
Janey, the tree looks great! That was a tough job but I love you added another tree to the world. ❤
Love how the tree looks in that space!! Such a fun process watching how the garden will change as it grows.
Thank you so much for joining me Shara!! 💗
I was a week or 3 late getting my cool flowers in and they made it through two nights in the low 30's.. Zone 6a, They're tougher than we think! So excited to see your cut flower garden come to life!
Ooh thats good to hear Kim! That is what LMZ says as well, its just hard to trust the process! Glad yours are doing well!
It's all looking beautiful! That white vinca 😍 Your garden is such an inspiration for the rest of us! It definitely helps me I'm my SC garden 🌼
Tree looks great Janey, I recently planted a Japanese maple in my front yard. I have staked it one either side and used a a heshin strapping this works really well. We are in spring and have had lots of wind and storm and my tree is doing so well😊
You should buy a Dolly. We have 2 and couldn't garden without them and they help move so many items around the house.
Wow! That tree looks great there.
Thank you Dianne! Yes I am so happy with how it turned out! Have a great day!
Don't get distracted 😂 The hardest part for me at the store. I love it, you made an great choice!
Haha everytime!!!
Great choice. Love it!! Opens up area. Good job!!
Thank you so much Laura! I appreciate that!
Hi Janey! Congrats on getting the monster out, the Redbud in and purchasing a long handled shovel. I totally agree that the right tools make all the difference no matter what the project. I have a Rubbermade tool shed that is wide but only 24" deep that holds most of my gardening stuff inc fertilizers etc. The rain stays out, it's never leaked even after taking it apart, moving it around and yrs of use. You could put it in the blue barrel area up against the house and free up the garage. Just a thought . . . BTW, I want to say that your Plumbago looks beautiful, I love the blue. Thanks for sharing your gardening life with all of us!
I broke the wooden handle on my shovel. I bought a long handled Rootslayer shovel. It is awesome! It has an unusual design and it is great for digging out plants.
I ordered a convertible hand truck from Costco. It can be used vertically or horizontally like a wagon. I use it all the time mostly for moving plants and pots.
That redbud tree looks great in your space! Show us when it blooms.
Hi Jennifer! I've heard quite a few people mention the rootslayer, ill have to check it out! I absolutely will be showing it off everywhere when it blooms! Thanks for watching and the tips!
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat I love your channel. I think we all share so much knowledge with each other. I am looking forward to your master gardener program and your flower field project.
It looks good.😎
Good idea steaking your new tree. I had some high winds earlier that snapped my young Red Oak into. So 😔.
I can tell you’re a physical therapist when you said “good body mechanics”! That tree is going to looks so beautiful! I’m honestly surprised that you haven’t ran into more pipes other than that one. Great video!
We had a huge thunderstorm downpour last night! (an hour north) and FROST on the grass and rooftops this morning!!! The low was 37! Brrrr!
Yikes Marie!! We woke up to 36 degrees and frost on the rooftops as well! It didn't say it was going to be THAT cold today! 🥶
Such a beautiful tree and the fall color is beautiful
Thank you Janet! I'm so happy it's finally in! Have a great evening!
Good afternoon
Looking great
Vas muy bien
Your new tree looks great! It really opens up the space. I love how you pointed out Jason's good body mechanics since he's a physical therapist. Ha ha!
I 💙your new tree!👍🏼
Thank you so much!!
The redbud is going to be gorgeous there once it gets bigger. Love Jim’s channel I have learned so much from him.
Thanks Rachel! Yes I have too! He taught me to propagate plants too! I'll always thank him for that!

Yes, and a Dewalt. I've always had good luck with their products.
It really does shine ✨
The Redbud looks great! It's perfect for that spot in your yard! And, I can't wait to see it in the Spring when its flowering. 🌳 M
Thank you so much! I'm really happy with how it turned out!
When it frosts after seedlings in mn, I put solo cups over them and a blanket over that for the night
Wow the solo cup idea is genius!!!! Thank you!
I love your garden! You bought a great instrument. I like everything👌🌻🐦😊❤️
Hello, I'm so glad you chose a Red Bud, I love them , we have 3 on our property, 2 in back yard & a Pansy Red bud in front , they look beautiful when all the daffy's & phlox are blooming, great job from the hubby to help!!, enjoy your videos, happy gardening, Ann
Input: don’t purchase the cheapest or the highest price of anything. Go the middle line. Most all the time the middle price line is the best made.
Eastern red bud should be gorgeous!
Ooh good tip Karen! I never thought of it like that but it makes sense!
I love redbuds so this makes me happy 😀. And I'm glad you got a bigger shovel! I can't believe how mich work you've done with the little one.
love my fiscars
Don't get the wooden handle. Fiberglass handles.
Good job Jayne…. You always shine in this style of video! So happy for you! 🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍
Yay thank you so much Liz! You are the best!
Beautiful tree!! I thought about a tree for our front yard for over a year. I couldn't find the right one!!! I found a flowering cherry tree and planted it this fall. It has beautiful large berries on it, and is a deep crimson color, which accents the brick in my home's front-facing fireplace. I can't wait to see it bloom in the Spring. It is so satisfying every time I see it from our kitchen window. I moved a tree that was there, an Orange Dream Japanese Maple, to our back yard where it will get more protection from the sun. It was struggling so much for several years. I'm also looking forward to seeing how the Japanese Maple will now thrive in its new home!!! You are right, as gardeners, our job is never really done!! Always a new challenge or plant that we just have to add to our landscape!! 🍁🍁🍁🍁
Mr. Muscles to the rescue! The redbud looks great there. Could you do a video on tool organization? I would like to see how you organize all your tools. Have a wonderful day.
Oh Tammy, I wish I could! My tools are such a mess right now. I need to find some sort of organization especially because I keep adding to my collection!
You are a true star all the hard work, the tree looks amazing xx
Looks great and I love the back light of the sun on the leaves.🙌
Thanks Linda! Yes that is my favorite part! It looks like they are glowing!
36’ here in the SF EB Hills last night…lots of frost on the rooftops this AM!
SAME Nada! I couldn't believe it when I woke up this morning! 🥶
Yay!! Janey I’m so happy you got a good long handled shovel. You will be sooo thankful. Just wait and see.
The Redbud looks amazing!! That fall colour is perfect in your garden.
Thanks for looking out Barbara! I was trying to find the Fiskars like you said but no go at my Home Depot! I'll keep an eye out for one though! 💗
I love this red bud looking forward to planting one in the front of my house. Great choice❤
Love seeing how excited you get when planting. I always tell my husband, gardening is my therapy. The tree look great too!
It’s perfect! Really brightens up that area.
So beautiful!! thank goodness for strong husbands!
Beautiful.. the garden has a lovely proportion now 😀🌸
Thank you so much Kristen!
Root Slayer shovel!
I've heard quite a few people mention that Helen! I need to look into it! thanks!
That tree looks so pretty there!! Great choice! 😊
Looks great 👍 perfect
Beautiful 😊
Oh it looks beautiful Janey 🥰
Looks so pretty there ❤
After covid it was really hard to find a fiskars shovel. I wanted to get my brother one for Christmas, because I love mine so much. I finally found one a year later at ACE hardware.
I pick up gardening tools at garage sales every chance I get.
The prefect sz tree, for the prefect spot. You mentioned rain twice now, plus you were in the rain, curious to how much you got, and how much it filled your bots.?
Beautiful! I concur w/ DS about native soil. I’m also wondering about roots buckling your sidewalk? I’m not familiar w/redbud trees roots, but something to consider.
You are correct! Never ending to do list!
Hi Jan! I was worried about that with my tree selection in this spot as well. The Oklahoma redbud is supposed to have non-invasive roots and is good for planting near sidewalks or driveways!
The tree looks great 👍🏼 I also planted 3 redbuds in my yard and looking forward to them growing out more. Also, I highly recommend the Root Slayer shovel. I have clay soil and also lots of tree roots from old trees that I had removed over the years to fight through when I’m planting in certain areas. I also have the power planter augers (7 and 9 ) and they work great (when they are no tree roots 😂)
I think I’m gonna get one next year. I have a spot picked out.
Oooh yay!! Excited for you!
Me chanting along in the gardenstore: "don't get distracted! you have more than enough plants!"
LOL everytime!!!
Minute 15:35 she's thanking Jason for lifting the tree for her. Is that what's left of Jason? 😄Good luck to have the pipe in the way. It looks perfect in the spot it ended up in. Looking forward to seeing it in the spring and wondering if it will blossom its first year.
Hahaha poor Jason! I worked him to "the bone" 🤪
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat LOL!!!
I need your muscle 😂
Hahaha thanks Tia!!
Hi! I ordered a flamethrower redbud online, but it’s just a stick without any budding, no branches, no leaves! I did cut the top to see if any sign of life, and there is some small green in the center. Any tips to help it grow, would be much appreciated!!!
Just keep in mind while planting the other plants around it that Red buds don't like to be watered very often . Easiest way to kill a red bud tree is to water too often.
Thank you Lesli! Great tip!
