Word has it that old Tommy Boy was playing with little girls down in the outback and got caught, then after a little time out, he was told never to come back. He had the Epstein bug for sure. That's a long trip and it's even longer with a hard on!!!
But he did take oxygen first before helping. At 9:04 he takes a few puff before giving to Tom. Then he puts on his own mask at 9:15. I'm sure he can hold breath for 10 seconds.
This scene is so realistic because it really is like you don’t know what’s going on. As if you were a passenger and you wouldn’t know what was going on. They captured that effect quite well.

Its realistic until you see the plane approaching the sea at like 400kph and Tom Hanks is standing near the cabin without any setbelt. in real life he would have literally exploded in hundreds of pieces lol
As a teen, I cried when Wilson floated away to that touching music. As an adult, I understand that if Chuck had come back to civilisation being best friends with a volleyball they'd throw him in an asylum.
In my life I skipped the airplane crash island survival and went straight to cast away from society

You left out my favorite scene: Just before his ill-fated flight, Tom Hanks gives Helen Hunt the car keys, and attached to the keyring is Swiss Army Knife. It had all kinds of nifty tools he could have used on the island.

@@ChloeLouiseeB yeah, AND it was Fedex, who actually had an incident where a pilot flying jumpseat like Tom Hanks brought on a guitar case with some hammers, knives, and a speargun, which he used in an attempted 1v3 fight to crash the plane so his wife could collect on his recent new life insurance policy. The fight lasted almost 40 minutes and featured an incapacitated FO performing barrel rolls and parabolic maneuvers with only control of the left half of his body. In a DC-10. The assailant still was not fully subdued by the time the plane was landing again in memphis
My friend John Frazier was the special effects supervisor on this film. I found it really interesting to have you critique the technical aspects of the pre-crash events. It's still one of my favorite films and even though the majority of the crash sequence in the water was CGI, John did a heck of a job in the scenes you showed. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I remember seeing the film in the theater. I had just turned 11. Genuinely thrilling and terrifying. I remember I grabbed my seat very hard. He did a great job.

I know they have to embellish the visuals a bit for Hollywood drama, but I'm guessing in real life if you're over the ocean at night you would not see the waves approaching through the window. It would be pitch black. Any time I've been on a transoceanic flight there is absolutely nothing visible out the window other than stars and the moon(if it's out).

That scene was so freaky. Seemed really realistic to what I imagine being in a plane crash would be like.
Except, Tom Hanks would have had his arm ripped off and he would have flown through the windshield. Not a good way to start an island vacation.

I was reminded of a situation in Arthur Hailey's Airport (the novel, I'm not sure if it's also in the movie). After Guerrero sets off his bomb in the back of the plane, there is (of course) a decompression. The captain, who had been in the back talking to Guerrero and oxygen-mask-hopped back to the deck, is aware that many passengers don't have the masks on, and decides to descend rather quickly to save their lives. I remember he mentions it's risky because the plane is structurally damaged. Unfortunately I don't remember how long it takes the plane to reach the lower altitude. I might need to read the book again.
I liked the commercial, some years later, that parodied the movie. Chuck shows up at the ranch with the FedEx box, and the customer says "Oh, my satellite phone finally got here!"

As a radio ham since 1995, your description of CPDLC makes sense. HF propagation conditions often can't support voice transmissions but digital transmissions have much better throughput. Unfortunately VHF and UHF don't work well out over the high seas without satellite relay service.
The sound of the plane engines were engrossing. I never forgot that sound..

Night jump out of the side door of a C - 141 starlifter. 200mph wind, jumping out towards that big jet engine roaring right in front of you that is pouring orange fire out of it. The experience rather overwhelms the senses..

It was a real rush opening the door, extending the jump platform and jumping on it to secure it and deploying the wind deflector. Noise, fire it doesn't get any better

Or a phycho shoots both pilots, several passengers and flight attendants, then jams the throttles to max and then puts the plane in a vertical nose dive. That really happened. Plane left a crater after that. Was featured in an episode of Mayday called "I'm the Problem".
@Tyler Buckley Fun fact, a 747 from a Chinese airline heading for California, don't remember whether it was San Fransisco or LA off the top of my head, but they lost control and plummeted from cruising altitude of about that height down to about 5,000-10,000 feet in just a couple of minutes. Miraculously, the pilots managed to regain control seconds before crashing into the Pacific and landed the plane safely.
There was a famous plane crash in Brazil when two aircrafts collided at 37000 feet high, a small Legacy plane sheared off about half of a Boeing 737's left wing, causing the 737 to nosedive and enter an uncontrollable spin, which quickly led to an in-flight breakup. All 154 passengers and crew on board died.

As an aircraft environmental control system expert, your take on it misting during a rapid depress is spot on. I've been onboard during multiple rapid depresses. Sometimes depending on the humidity it'll mist so much you can't see more than a few feet in front of you.
Kelsey, I flew over Typhoon Haiyan in Nov 2013 from Taipei to Honolulu. Our captain said he couldn't fly around it, and man, it was a bumpy flight (barf bags all the way!) I could definitely see us deviating 200 miles off course over the entire route. It was the second worse flight of my life, after landing in a Category 3 typhoon in Japan! Damn, the Pacific is fun! She doesn't give you guys a break!

Since he spoke of reading through the comments a lot in this video, I just wanted to say that I didn’t notice anything strange about his appearance at all. I almost feel like that was said to deliberately hurt his feelings. He does not look blind, nor does be blink abnormally, and he comes across as efficient, focused, interesting and capable. I’ve liked and subscribed!
Okay, I watched 2:00 over again. In the beginning, he’s reading prepared text. If I were to post a video, I’d probably try to set up a teleprompter type of thing too. He’s cut out takes of himself reading, and the best ones probably involved not losing his place for an eighth of a second. After that, he blinks less often than I do, but he is blinking. I also notice that he seems tense, almost as if he’s painfully aware of the thousands of people who are eager to hear his musings on a 20-year-old Tom Hanks movie. His adrenaline/enthusiasm might have a lot to do with it. But picking on a physical trait like that, or, say, telling someone they blink too *often* can really impact a person’s self esteem for years.

When the director would call for a tape playback and the heads would clog on the VTR, that's what the control room would be like. And the poor tape operators would go from pleading with their machines to cussing them out. It was comical, just like "Dark Star". Modern control rooms aren't nearly as much fun because nothing breaks unexpectedly.

I can definitely second, as late as it is by the publishing date of this video, that as a corporate pilot if I'm in my seat I'm always strapped in. I even keep my shoulder straps on because they don't bother me. If you're an airline passenger, keep your seatbelt on.

We were hit by another car pulling into our driveway when I was a kid. It has been ingrained in me since then that seatbelts are first/last thing I do in transportation, and always on.

Not an aviation expert, but it's my understanding that wings are very important to an aircraft. You definitely want to have both of them attached for safely sustainable flight.

Well not safely anyways...60 degree dive at full throttle with the weight of a 747 might....but if your in that type of profile your not really controlling the aircraft.
@@janis317 We even don't what kind of plane is that. From outside looks like an Airbus 330. (2 engines) Could be an A340 (4 engines). But in the cockpit you can see three engines. And I think a can see a yoke not a sidestick. Like it was in a MD11 cockpit

Nice job bro, I’ve always been wanting to see this movie reviewed by someone like you who can actually put a more realistic tag on it! Having flown the MD-11 for a long time, I always wanted to know what you considered could possibly cause a breach into the fuselage by a “thunderstorm, or hail storm?“ I think it would’ve been important to note that not even a lightning storm or a hail storm could’ve caused a breach into the fuselage, therefore making this even more unrealistic scenario! Of course, there’s never been anything like this that’s happened to an MD11 let alone another large commercial aircraft that I know of. Keep these movie reviews coming and I thought it was very nice to know from a pilots perspective the chances of something like this actually happening.

Or they are a 737Max - 500+kts straight down. (Or a 737 with a suicidal indonesian pilot (a couple of those exceeded Mach 1 - full power vertical dive (yes the wings came off)).
Suicidal pilots are why a number of airlines have a minimum of two crew in the cockpit policy, if a pilot steps out one of the cabin crew steps in.
actually some airframes have been known to go down that fast and for no apparent reason. most of you, to include 74 Gear the pilot, are VERY unfamiliar with the accident reports regarding elevator mishaps. There are so many reasons a plane will go down, and stating the wings must be missing like it is the only reason just shows all of your ignorance on the subject.

He said to descend 25,000 feet in less than a minute is almost impossible for a plane with just a hole blown in it unless it had exterior parts removed that normally would cause drag and make the plane descend slower. please elaborate on the correlation between not blinking and being a good pilot. not saying he's not, I don't know him, just saying your logic is flawed. where in the pilot handbook does it say the less blinks the better? xD
@@yourpersonalspammer if someone is a professional commercial pilot and they have developed the ability to observe complex/critical visual information without blinking for long periods of time, it stands to reason that they have some degree of advantage over their peers as it relates to monitoring control panels and other visual stimuli without accruing slight but critical lapses in visual awareness due to blinking. It obviously wouldn’t make a non-pilot a great pilot, but it would certainly enhance the proficiency of a professional pilot with some degree of experience.

My husband was an Air Force navigator on the C130s for 20 years. Later, he did the same job for Alaska Airlines. He retired way before computers aided the crew and well before mobile phones, etc.
I was never afraid, never nervous no matter what was happening when flying because he always knew and could explain clearly and easily.

@@74gear There used to be a certain code of behaviour on a plane, but this last ten years there seems to be a breed of people who think that they are sat in their own living rooms, they disrobe, take their socks off and have a full on domestic row. I used to love flying, but my last flight to Kos was a total nightmare, with a bloke behind me with the worst smelling feet ever, he fell asleep and snored the whole way there. The air steward refused to wake him and ask him to put his shoes back on whilst all the whole this sickening smell permeated through the plane. Its really unacceptable. i think the airlines need to toughen up on this selfish unacceptable behaviour, flights are not cheap and should be an enjoyable experience but these days its more a test of endurance .

Scott Franco you're forgetting that the soda is carbonated therefor this is a perfect example of rapid decompression, it's literally a compressed gas of any state being relieved or in scientific words, decompressed. Only with a jet turbine the result is much bigger, louder and scarier

I really like hearing about the technical aspects when Kelsey is explaining a video, because how else would most people know?! As a GA pilot, I'm always interested in things from the airline aspect, and Kelsey is very good at explaining the finer points!

For someone like me who has a fear of flying, these videos are very helpful. It's comforting to know there are competent and knowledgeable pilots like yourself. I always think I'd be totally comfortable if I could just sit in the cockpit and speak to the pilots. ( Thanks Mohammed Atta and Co. for ruining that possibility forever). In any event, keep the videos coming!
JD I started out the same as yourself, a very very nevous flyer, the idea of being blown up or crash landing in one of these infernal metal coffins was less than appealing. But thanks to great blokes like Kelsey who go to the trouble of putting these technical videos together I've moved on from a fear of the unknown to a point now where I'm ok as a passenger and am seriously looking at flight school as I start to approach retirement.

So as an Aircraft Mechanic Ive always loved the scene where the engine is half submerged in the ocean and still running as it sinks. That’s a heck of a motor. Pratt’s if it’s MD-11 GE’s if it’s a DC-10 🤣

The cockpit and cabin area is an MD (look at the R1 door behind Chuck).. the outside view on the tarmac was an Airbus.
And all FedEx aircraft have a smoke curtain on the 9G net-- unless it has a solid bulkhead there.

At 19:55 the primary flight display(pfd) shows the plane completely level, just before hitting the water.
This plane has got some serious issues.

I love the way once some dramatic situation happens in a movie, the camera is swished around rapidly so that you have no idea what is going on. This only became possible when Robert Gotschalk (Panaflex) developed the light weight movie camera. Prior to that, the huge studio cameras were on a sturdy tripod or crane, then you could see what was happening.

The one "Hollywood" part of this scene that made me laugh was when the plane hit the water. The Hanks character was standing, holding onto netting. That plane had to be going at LEAST, well over 150 mph and likely A LOT faster. So when they hit the water, his arm would have been ripped off right before he sent flying into the cockpit and killed instantly. Imagine standing up in the back of a van that hit a brick wall at only 60 mph. It would send you through the windshield and you be killed.

My thoughts exactly. Surviving a water landing in a large jet like that is a very rare thing and it ONLY has the POTENTIAL to happen when you "land" on the water like it's a runway and touch the water just right. (not plowing into it violently like in the movie).
Even then you're probably going to die when one of the wings digs into the water and the plane spins apart at a minimum of 115 to 150 mph (stall speed for large jetliners). Or maybe you end up slamming into a wave in a head-on collision, which at over a hundred miles per hour = pretty much zero chance of anyone surviving, especially someone standing up and not wearing a seat belt.
But at their angle of descent, they're probably going much faster than stall speed which completely removes any chance of survival. (again, especially for a doofus standing up without a seat belt).
..i guess Hanks is into being a jinx that causes crashes & somehow miraculously surviving them..to do it all again in a couple of years..even a moon shot! lmbo.
in addition, inertia works the other way around for him, he goes backwards with the crash instead of forward
"Cast Away" is indeed a great movie with a fantastic performance by Tom Hanks. He was not to know that 16 years later he would be starring in a movie featuring yet another plane crash (or rather, "forced water landing") in which he would portray the real-life pilot who went through it and saved 155 lives.
Your technical commentary on the plane crash scene is interesting but also has some important information for air travellers in general. Knowing that you should keep footwear on during take-off and landing - and why you should - is useful. It's also good to have a clear explanation of why you must fit your own oxygen mask before assisting others with theirs - if you're conscious, you can help them; if you lose consciousness, you cannot, thus everyone may end up unconscious and less likely to survive the situation.
This video and the others are quite informative. I just got my first job as an airline pilot and I'm still going through ground school for the maddog and I haven't been inside the cockpit at all and though I know the systems theorically I just couldn't figure out one thing. How exactly do these oxygen masks work. You explained it here and I learned it perfectly. Thanks again brother. I've learned a lot from you.
I worked for fed ex in the 1980's. They really took care of their customers. However I'm happy I left there ...didn't want to grow old there. U literally hit the ground running to do your delivery's on time. They paid well and I would use the service which I have several times. They even contacted me 25 years later and Gave me a huge retirement that I had no idea I was owed. Thank you uncle Fred
That scene was amazing. The sound, the special effects, and camera work were captivating. The wreckage after the crash was incredible with the flames and the motor running.
The engine ran too long after the crash. To begin with it would have ingested an enormous amount of water during the crash landing. That would have stopped it. Secondly pretty much everything that controls the engine is broken from the cockpit back, and most likely there's fuel not getting to the engine. Why is it running. I think they overdid that part

This scene always gives me anxiety, especially when the front of the plane is sinking into the murky black depths of the ocean.

@Camaro 1968he survived but he didn't arrive anywhere close to any specified or approximate ETA. In Cast Away he arrived YEARS later than his original ETA and also not at the original intended airport destination.
