  • I attempt to combine the Scalescenes Low Relief High St Fronts (T005) and High St Backs (T005a) to form a single building.
    In the video I show some issues I had along the way and the tools and techniques I use when building these kits.

    That's quite a project! Nicely built. I think if I was locked up in solitary for the rest of my life as long as I had scalescenes kits to build with a radio for company, I'd be ok!

      Thanks, lol, hmm not sure about that! 🤣 It was good to finally finish it and the reward in the end is you get a decent looking detailed model.

    John, they look excellent, you are the N gauge scale scenes master

      Hi Phil and thankyou for your comments and interest. The video did go on for a bit but glad you enjoyed it.

    They look so good when done, very photo realistic, but ... man... tedious on the build, especially in N-Scale. Nice work, John!

      You said it Anthony, it did become a little tedious in the end, but glad it's finally done!

    Hi John, really enjoyed the video, I am actually moving away from card kits but there is no disputing these look great and well explained in your video! Cheers Gary

      Hi Gary, I went from the other brand of card kits to these as I think they look a lot more detailed. I haven't looked but is there much of a range of plastic kits these days in N Scale or are you thinking of a bit of scratch building?

    Good to see John, excellent tutorial, I’ve kind of been building up to making a Scalescenes video now that I’ve made a few kits but still not sure if my skills are up to it!!!
    I actually print mine onto A4 sticky labels then obviously peel off the backing and stick them to the card. I actually find this a better method than the glue sticks. I also only use 1mm card for everything as most of the walls are double sided anyway and in N scale I just find it a bit better to handle through my experiences so far. I’ve also stopped cutting the the roof tiles into strips as it’s so hard to get them straight! I cut out a slightly oversize piece for what I need, again peel the back off the sticky label and stick it on.
    Thanks for doing this though John it does highlight some of the problems you incur with these kits, I often mis-interpret the instructions! Cheers for now mate, John

      G'day John, I think you should make a video, it's always good to see how others build these kits and hopefully pick up a few ideas along the way. Interesting idea with the labels, might have to give that a go, certainly quicker than spreading glue everywhere! Yes, the roof tile cutting can be somewhat tricky, one slip and it's gone...... Oh and the instructions, nothing worse than not following them to the letter (sometimes I have to read it over and over) and creating more work for yourself. I started filming this months ago and just after I started you mentioned on one of your videos that someone made a comment that you should do a Scalescenes video. Then I was thinking oh no John might think I stole his idea by making this video!! 😮😄All the best. John

    Greetings to the Upside-down and hello John 👋 Wow it is fantastic to see these models up close 🤩 such beautiful work and so realistic 👏 👏👏👏 This video really is a fantastic resource for helping people get to grips with putting a Scalescenes building together 😇 I definitely am not a "card" person 😲 but I'm in awe of the work that You, Michael and N Gauge Shelf are able to achieve 😎 proper modelling 😉 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

    Hi John - Fantastic a detailed report on a Scalescene build and in N Gauge aswell, brilliant.
    Having watched you make a few mistakes makes me feel a lot better but also terrifies me at the same time LOL.
    One question though, do all the roofs come like that whereby you have to put strips of tiles down or do you have an option that it comes as a sheet if you get my drift?
    Thanks for the tip on putting window sills in, I had an awful job with the coal shed one plus it is so tiny and fiddly. Also how you put your windows in, cracking idea.
    That was an absolutely brilliant tutorial John, warts and all. Thankyou very much mate.
    Oh just one more thing John. My inkjet printer does not allow me to print onto transparency film. So if I use the Scaleglaze all the frames are in white and pristine.
    So if you look at RO21b North Light Engine Shed, on the last page of print outs you have the roof and side windows in a black and grubby brown. What are they for? Apologies for being a bit dense.
    Regards Chris

    • @wimbletrain
      @wimbletrain  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Chris thanks for the kind words, this one took me a while to put together!. Remember, mistakes are good because that's how you learn. Our friend John from Exehaven just cuts out the tiles as one piece instead of cutting them into strips and gets a good looking result.
      The windows, once printed out on a transparency will appear to be 'dirty' windows, they will still let the light through to some extent. The frames are black because you can't print white with a normal run of the mill printer. If you get the Scaleglaze windows I guess you could weather them up to look dirty if you wish. Regards John

    Love scale scenes kits, they are fiddly but the weathering is beyond what I could ever paint. Have had some success printing on to adhesive paper, but am still practicing on the free kits they have. Some of the card you use appears well thicker than what scale scenes recommends. Am I right and is there a positive to using thicker card? Lastly where did the big town hall building with the clock come from? Layout is looking great. Stu

    • @wimbletrain
      @wimbletrain  Před rokem

      Hi Stuart, the other building is the Scalescenes R005 large station kit. I try to get card sizes based on what Scalescenes recommend, but when you start investigating card thickness and what you get, it's a minefield! Anyway, just make sure you take your time, it will pay off in the end. I saw your other comment about the card sizes. John

  • @ilox11

    A great build video and very useful. I'm about to build the canal scenes for my T-TRAK layout. The Canal Lock scares me because I just cant seem to get the right thickness of card to mount it all on.
    Do you get your sheets from Officeworks by chance? The majority of mine come from cereal packets, all one brand so to maintain consistency.
    Love your trick about the windows, that is a steal for sure.
    Have you told John about the errors with the rear of 1 and 2 buildings? And the roof fit problem?
    I am also going down a similar path with Arduino as my control system. No DCC unfortunately, my locos dont ha e the room and I cant afford the chips.😢

    • @wimbletrain
      @wimbletrain  Před rokem

      Hi, I did buy the 200gsm and 600gsm (supposed to be around 1mm thick but can vary) originally. I've now tried a couple of different eBay sellers for the 1mm thick and recently gone for one seller (plazadj) who says their boxboard (as they call it) is 600gsm 1mm thick. I did notice with the previous cardstock I was using for the 1mm wasn't exact when fitting cover sheets to some pieces in the Scalescenes kits.
      I haven't mentioned the errors to John, I probably need to have a look at those again to make sure it's not something I was doing wrong.
      Yes, unfortunately it can get quite expensive fitting out all you locos with DCC on top of the cost of the actual locos!
      Cheers and thanks for watching. John
