Are Carerra Tires Any Good? - Carerra 132/124 Slot Car Tire Care and Feeding

  • Are the stock rubber tires that come included with your new Carrera Digital 132/124 or Carrera Evolution 132/124 slot car any good? If you were to spend any amount of time on the Internet researching information on Carrera slot cars, one could get the impression that the stock tires perform poorly and are inferior to aftermarket slot car tires. Actually, the stock rubber Carrera tires will perform quite well if they are tuned correctly, nearly as well as an aftermarket urethane tire. However, because of their aging issues, will require periodic re-turning whereas some other tire may not, or at least not as frequently.
    The video includes information regarding truing (or tuning) of slot car tires that apply to not only Carrera but other brands of slot cars such as Scalextric, Policar, Ninco, Slot-It. Aftermarket tires, such as Paul Gage urethane brand also require truing after installation.

    You can't really call this a tyre test when you're mainly relying on magnets for grip.
    Take the magnet out and let's see a proper comparison, the results may surprise you.
    Well made video by the way 👍🏻

    Love your channel, we are mainly Carrera digita racers and run no magnets in all but some cars we leave the mid magnet if they are really bad handling and all tuning in the world cant' help the Mustangs with the rear end jacked up. We actually lowered them in the rear as they should be and did a bunch of other body plastic trimming and that really helped.
    Bottom line is Carrera tires are garbage, some turn super hard and dry and others turn to greasy gooey mess. We run Paul Gage and Slot Invasion tries, trued up. :)

    Thank you for your Video.
    I'm living in Germany and have a Scalextric track. I drive my 132 slotcars without magnets. For my 124 slotcars, I have an Carrera track, what I must build on or Off in the Floor in our livingroom. But now to the Carrera tyres. If the Carrera Cars are new, the tyres are ok. Some Drive Out of the Box good. But If the Cars are a little older, the Carrera tyres will be Like shewing gum.
    I put on all Carrera cars PU tyres. In Germany WE have Thema from Ortmann or Franken-Slot. I think in USA they named Paul Cage tyres. I have seen them in Slot Car Mods.
    Sorry, my english ist not so good. I hope you understand what I had written 🥴

    You can do the rubber tires on slot cars the same way we do with our RC racing rubber tires and that is clean them well I use foil hand cleaner and rub it in well then wipe off any excess and I will let them dry a few minutes then spray a good coat of WD40 on the tire and set aside to dry then take ordinary household Saran Wrap or a comparable brand and wrap a strip around the tire 4 or 5 times or until they look shiny and the black isn't really visible. The thing about wrapping the tires is that ultra violet rays are unable to penetrate plastic so it will keep them from hardening up. If you are allowed to use a traction additive I will use the WD40 on a lower horsepower car and I try to find a good belt anti slip spray and will spray a good amount into a container I can get a cotton dauber for, I have found that some commercial contractor supply houses sell tin cans with a screw on applicator cap and I will use paint remover to take the label off so I have a clean metal can I will use the applicator to put a good coat on and then a rag to wipe everything possible off the tire then will put an even fairly light coat on and let it sit then just before going to the track will wipe off any excess that hasn't dried completely, (some tracks will make you clean your tires if they leave a trail when you set them down that's the main reason for wiping the tires dry before setting it down, just don't really use a lot of pressure they just don't have to have a liquid looking coating on the tread surface, I know that a lot of people in our area use PB-Blaster and spray it on liberally and wipe it off before going to race, I have used it but prefer to put it into a container with an applicator screw on top it's less likely to get everything in your pit area sticky enough that you can't pick up your drink with a single hand, that does make other people a little suspicious of what you are doing.

  • @pedrovskyyy
    @pedrovskyyy Před 9 měsíci

    Great video!!! I will check them all.
    I agree with you. Maybe it's just luck, but I have six 1:32 Carrera cars for over a year and a half that ran more than 5000 laps (>100Km) each and the stock tires remain perfectly good. Of course I already trimmed them twice and I always clean them between sessions with sticky tape. I also clean the track frequently.
    What accelerates a lot the tires degradation is oiling them. I did that for a while and, although the lap time benefit was clear, the rubber became glassy very quickly. So, I would have to trim the tires frequently or just leave the oiling process. I chose the last option.
    I must say I'm really impressed with the quality of Carrera tracks and cars. Regardless of being exposed to a humid environment for part of the year, the track metallic contacts don´t show any signs of corrosion. As for the cars, I just changed once the sliding contacts on two of them and all other parts (guide-keels, motors, axles and tires) are just fine. The cars performance remains excellent.🏎
    Keep playing and doing these videos

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 9 měsíci

      Correct. Oiling the tires is bad for the longevity of the tires. The only time we do that is if a set of tires is starting to dry out and get glazed over, oiling can restore the softness for a period of time. It'll get you through a race night and buy you time before you can get new replacements.

    Do you sometimes find it necessary to true the wheels as well, as these can be out of true? Also Carrera often put breaks in the central rib of the wheels which don't help.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 11 měsíci

      Never with the stock tires. However, sometimes with the urethanes those breaks in the wheel rib do come though and can be seen as low spots in the profile. I'm assuming it's because some of the tires aren't an exact fit and some need to be stretched over that rib more than the stock tire would. In those cases it's recommended to fill those gaps in the wheel rib.

  • @orestkucyna5546
    @orestkucyna5546 Před 11 měsíci

    When truing tires on Carerra, do you recommend filling in the wheel “divets” in the hubs? Many of my cars seem to hop on the track as they run. What’s your thoughts?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I've never had the divots in the wheel rib be an issue when using stock tires. But, with some wheel/urethane tire combinations those divots do affect the tire profile. In those cases, it would be good to fill the gaps and true the wheel, then of course true the tire after putting it on the wheel.

    What are you using to connect the control unit to a computer, sorry for being off topic!

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The track connects to the PC with a USB-to-serial (TTL level) FTDI cable. Many many moons ago the Carrera FTDI cable (called the PC-unit) was about $100 which was ridiculous so we made our own. Now they are more reasonably priced at about $40. Here's some links for more info:
      www.slotforum.com/threads/homemade-carrera-cu-to-pc-cable.200593/
      For about half that, this may work but can't say for 100% the DIN plug that connects to the Carrera control unit is correct.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The magnet height from the track can vary between cars and can make a big difference. The first thing to do is tune/true the tires. After that you'll be able to more properly evaluate the performance between cars.

    Does truing the tires keep them from melting?

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 5 měsíci

      Truing doesn't have any affect on the melting of the tires. The best practices to keep tires from melting is to keep them from contacting anything during storage and don't store them in a container with other plastics or rubbers. Basically, keep them in the jewel case when not in use. This doesn't guarantee they won't eventually go bad, but it will ensure you aren't doing anything to accelerate the aging.

    • @johnniehobby
      @johnniehobby  Před 11 měsíci +2

      We don't run silicone tires so we don't know too much about them except for the following: 1) they grip better than both rubber and urethane 2) you don't want to run them on a track mixed with other types of tires. Either everybody needs to run silicone or nobody runs silicone.

    @bomamo9620 Před 11 měsíci

    Hello over there, my 1st time here on your channel leaving a commentary.
    I followed you for a while and Iike your contents.
    In terms of the Tires I made the same experience. Only truing the Carrera Tires are a big step ahead. Maybe some expect too much from a Toy, because that is what Carrera mainly is.
    The weak points on any Carrera Car are the Rims, Axxles and the Tires. They are produced in masses and therefore a big amount of those parts simply cheap stuff.
    The axxles mostly run unconcentric and with the Rims Carrera shot themselve in their own foot. The Rims are glued on the axxles, which makes even more worse. The only high-light are actually the Tires, once trued, they are going well.
    A normal consumer who buys Carrera won`t even notice it. If you are more and deeper into the topic, of course everyone jumps on the train of dissapointment. It is all in the eye of the beholder and there are many, who jump on everyone elsee train, I guess.
    I believe the different quality comes from the manufacture of the Tires, means the mixture of the rubber differs in its quality from different supplies. I am guessing here, but that would explain the difference or the Tires, being so different in the lasting process. And you mentioned the storage, too. Also a big factor to it.
    I prefer rubber any way on my slotcars, so compared to the prices for the aftermarket Tires, Carrera is under that price. To be honest, the front Tires are doing their job, only the back ones are the factor in speed advance.
    There is not a lot one can do to make Carrera Car run better. An exchanged Rear-Axxle with attached Rims and different Pins and Gear-Pin, are next to the Tire exchange, about it.
    Maybe some wait reduncing on the Body from the inside will also go, but that is about it.
    Everyone who does that, improoves the car, but to be competitive to other brands are, as if you copmpare apples with oranges. Both are fruits, but totally different.
    Any way, stay in the slot and have fun. Greetings from Bremen, Germany. Bjoern aka Bo MaMo 🙂
