  • Every day, tons of plastic flows through Denpasar's rivers into the mangrove forests of South Bali. This plastic gets trapped in between the roots and suffocates the mangrove trees. At Sungai Watch, we are on a mission to clean up these mangroves and prevent more plastic from getting there in the first place. For 2+ years, we have been cleaning this mangrove forrest every day and installing our trash barriers upstream in Denpasar. After almost 400,000 kg of plastic collected, new mangroves are growing back and we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel 🌱

Your group are doing an amazing job. I hope the government has implemented an education program for the villages. Otherwise, the trash will never stop. Why isn't there a twice weekly garbage collection by the Government?

Actually it should be a huge programm with the UN, so that a worldwide coordinated effort could be financed. A deposit on all plastic products could be part of the solution, and at least help with recycling / cleaning up. As far as I know Bojan Slats projects are alfinanced privately via donations, and these should absolutely getting money from all countries.

We need more awereness campaigns in these areas, its no use to clean everything and people who pollute don't change their attitudes.
It refreshes my faith in humanity, thank you for your job.

He said that some towns have no garbage pickup. They have nowhere else to throw their garbage. There's no waste management there.

removing the plastic at source is the best option that is for sure, looks like that city needs a plastic collection system not just throw it in the river, its about changing mind sets and that starts with educating the kids. as they will very quickly influence the rest of the family. keep up the good work nice to see.

Does the government commit to providing trash removal once cleanups are done in these villages? Otherwise, it feels like there can be no real progress. Long term, I guess there just has to be less plastics used but I feel like that is the biggest challenge.
