A bear is incredibly fast. I mean incredibly fast. Luckily, they're also pretty instinctual about saving energy. If that bear felt the need to attack and kill the guy with the camera it would no problem.

Exactly correct. I used to live just outside Yosemite over 30 years ago and even then the touristas were as stupid as these are in this vid. Seems they are striking for a Darwin award. As for the speed of bears, check out this bison chasing a grizz up in Yellowstone. The speed, endurance and climbing ability of the grizz is stunning. If a bear decides he's hungry or just backed into a corner a human WILL lose........especially in the Spring or late Fall. These Yosemite bears are different than the grizzlies but they are still bears in the wild and in places like Yellowstone or Yosemite where touristas are common to them.......there can be hell to pay. Enjoy the speed of this bear!

Black bears are very passive too tho, they’re like spiders they’re more afraid of us then we are of them. This one just sees humans all the time and eats what they leave behind

It amazes me that people are so stupid they walk quickly towards a bear. At worst, you can get in trouble, at “best” you are scaring the bear or making him see humans as not something to be afraid of. Let the bear be on his way.

At Yosemite, its important to remember that this place used to (still does, but not as much) have a problem with bears coming to human dwellings.
The bears knew where the bins were (even when they got padlocked shut), they knew the car parks because the cars often had food in them.
Bears are genuinely beautiful, they look so cuddly and friendly, but they're not. As humans visiting we have to remember our caveman instincts. So, you walk backwards, slowly, make as little noise as possible and if a fight happens remember its a fight to the dearh, it is either you or the bear and frankly, the bear has advantages over you.
I visited Yosemite in 2019 and the only bear i saw was my mum getting out of bed in the morning (she will kill me if she knew i said that haha).
Yosemite is genuinely beautiful and you most likely won't encounter a bear, but you still need to be prepared incase you do.
Using bear spray isnt inhumane, and its a good thing because bears wont return to that area, meaning less people at risk in the future.

Despite seeming awkwardness, the bear can move with great rapidity even over rough ground, some varieties attaining a speed of nearly 48 km (30 mi) an hour for a short distance. Bears are also good swimmers, and most of them can climb.
The idea that bears hug or squeeze their victims to death is not borne out by the facts. When engaged in a struggle, the bear strikes with its huge paws, and its powerful, heavy arms drive the nonretractile claws deep into the body of its opponent. A single blow may be sufficient to kill an animal such as a deer. Most appropriately, therefore, the Scriptures allude to the bear’s dangerousness in parallel with that of the lion. (Amos, chapter 5, verse 19; Lamentations, chapter 3, verse10) Naturalists, in fact, consider the bear to be even more dangerous than the large cats. Usually, however, the bear, like other animals, does not molest humans but avoids them, although it may attack when provoked or surprised.

@@0230Raveena I'm so glad! I'd have LOVED to have seen a bear at Yosemite, but our tour guide didn't give ANY advice on what to do if we saw a bear, or, well, any animal for that matter.
We did however see some wild dear (2 families I'm told), they got close to us (but didn't care that I was stood there quietly with an open mouth and a digital camera haha.

it is a little surprising that this bear is among people during the day. black bears are notoriously skittish and will almost always avoid people, and the Mist trail is one of the most popular trails in the entire park. My bet is this bear found some food from a human at some point near this trail. btw, guns are obviously not the answer in black bear country (all you need is some common sense and respect for wild animals), and Yosemite doesn't allow folks to bring any weapons, or bear spray into the park. be smart folks.

Rangers from Yosemite say there just isn’t a need for the spray. The park doesn’t have grizzlies (the main reason someone would carry bear spray in the first place). Even though about 500 black bears do roam the park, Yosemite has never reported a bear-on-human attack. To prevent public encounters with bears, park staff use GPS tracking and redirection techniques with good success.
