Some great advise. But having managed a foodbank I can say, please don’t give us your expired foods! We just have to throw them away and pay for the garbage bill. Only donate items that you yourself would use. Some people need to know to stop treating the less fortunate like less!

Agreed. We recently donated some soups that were perfectly good and didn't go out of date for over a year. But my daughter just bought too many and didn't end up liking it very much. Someone else may love it and it's safe and in date. That's what you want to donate, not expired stuff. Nobody wants that!

Stop treating the less fortunate like less. What a wonderful quote. I love it. Thank you for sharing such powerful words.
I worked in a job center. We had a closet of work and interview appropriate clothes. Often we received donations of worn, stained, torn, faded, yellowed, outdated clothes and worn out, broken shoes. These items went straight to the dumpster.
I think some people feel guilty about throwing things away. If you're getting rid of useful clothing that you no longer need or fit, please donate it. If it isn't good enough for you to wear, then it isn't good enough for anyone else. Throw away your own trash.

This might have been mentioned in the comments but unused makeup can be donated to funeral homes. Obviously not anything that looks funky but not all expired makeup is visibly bad. Just a thought. 💜

I could never get rid of my button tin. I inherited it from my mom when she passed away. It was started by my grandmother. I go through it from time to time and I can still remember some of the dresses or blouses my gram and mom took the buttons off of. I just used a mixture of different black buttons on a jacket that was missing most of them.

A book I read a couple of decades ago completely changed my outlook on stuff. It's "Clutter's Last Stand" by Don Aslett. Also, piles of things can be stressful because it means work. If a room is a mess, it means I need to clean it. Whereas if a room is uncluttered it is calming and a pleasure to walk into. Piles of catalogs saved because "there might be something in them I need" just creates stress every time you look at it because it means there is a task to do. Not every room may be clutter free as anyone with kids knows. But I always had at least one room that was, so that I had a refuge to walk in to.

A few months after joining WW, I went through my pantry and cabinets. I took the expired stuff, disposed of the food and recycled the boxes, cans and jars. Then I gave the non expired items, (I no longer wanted) to the local food bank. It was 134 Lbs of food! Felt great!

OK junk mail. I gather the envelopes along with pages from magazines, sew them into a “junk journal” even decorate them very nicely and put them in random places for people to find and enjoy. I have a note in it that says “so I have found you. love me or pass me along”. imagine their joy when someone finds something like that randomly! I know someone who used to do that with painted rocks just leave it scattered along the trail and she said she’d love to see the look of joy when people would spot them and take them home. I have one rock I found 15 years ago that I still use to hold paper napkins down on my patio table. I treasure it More than my jewelry

I heard an idea to fill the totes/bags that you’re going to donate with more items to donate - can make it a family challenge to each fill a bag or challenge yourself to fill them in a weekend. Same idea with shipping boxes that come into our house can leave full of items we no longer need/ want

We won’t take a box from a food bulk store. We get like 12 items and push cart to our car and put in the trunk. Store clerk asked why not take a box? My family gets Amazon…don’t need more boxes. Also, one of these boxes work great if you bring treats or supples to school, or family holiday party, a box for gift bags, presents and another to carry a hot dish. No sense using plastic bags to carrying these awkward or bulk items. After party, one person can carry our gifts back in house. Then, we break down box and recycle it.

My husband and I made up personal care bags for the homeless in our area with all the free totes we got. We went to the local dollar tree and bought shampoo and other personal care products. We added new socks, small snacks and during the winter we went and cleaned our closets of gently used sweaters. By using the totes they have something nice to put their belongings in. It was a win for us. We were always taught to care for our fellow men and we taught our children to do the same.

  • @solvedfyi
    @solvedfyi Před 2 lety +18

Hmm, I see these channels often start with books. Does anyone's clutter or hoarding problem really come down to books? I feel like if anything can stick around it's books. Even if you continue to fail to take them down and read them, they still have a decorative utility.
I think clutterers are more likely to need to get ruthless on clothes and paper and containers etc

    • @michelleneuman579
      @michelleneuman579 Před 2 lety +5

I think this just depends. My husband loves books but rarely reads them. He does read an occasional audio book. Some look nice in a book shelf but so do purses or shoes that you don't really use. I just think it depends on the person. I think books are really hard for a lot of people. Some are decorative and some are classics. Most can be found at the library. I've just found that this is a hard item to declutter for some.

    • @teddy-3765
      @teddy-3765 Před 2 lety +4

@@michelleneuman579 The library isn't open 24/7, and if it were you might not be able to get to it, or feel inclined to if you're suddenly in the mood to read a particular book you avent gotten around to picking up in years, but have sitting on the shelf all ready for just such a moment.
And (and I say this as a librarian) library resources are finite - yours may not have the book you're in the mood for. Even if they can get in a copy on interlibary loan, it could take weeks, by which point, you're no longer in the mood for that book... Whereas if it's been sat on your shelves just waiting, you could have picked it up when the mood struck, read it, and moved onto the next one before you even had a chance to get tot he library to check if they had it in stock.

Everyone’s “Hoarding problems“ are different. Some people hoard stuffed toys, some people hoard clothing, some people hoard books. If you have a bunch of books that you don’t use as decoration and you never intend to read, get rid of them. Have a garage sale, donate them to a charity, give them to a friends of the library at one of their events (A lot of times they don’t keep them, either).

Great hints that inspire me to de-clutter. You might want to hold onto your tote bags, though. I'm glad I kept mine, here in NJ they recently enacted a plastic bag ban, so have to bring our own. If other states follow suit, you may need those totes. Or just choose to use them as more eco-friendly than single-use bags.

Hi Katy! I just came across your channel yesterday. I have been decluttering for years, but I just recently retired and really want to tackle those areas that are really hard for me. My biggest issue is printed photos and “keepsake” items. When my husband and I were first married in 1987 there were no digital options for photos-and I took LOTS of photos. My husband is a high school coach of 35 years and we have two sons, so my printed photo collection is overwhelming. Having said that, I have somewhat began the decluttering process. I have gone through almost all of my photos and thrown away duplicates, triplicates, blurry photos and those that I had no idea who was in them or they just weren’t good. But…I still have so many 😫😫 I have no desire to scan them and create digital copies- that would take more time than I’m willing to dedicate. I’ve thought about doing another purge and just keeping the absolute best, but I get hung up on that sometimes. If you have suggestions or advice for this area of decluttering I would love to hear them. Thanks so much!

Then I delete the pics when I’m done. They aren’t for anyone except me. Hope it helps. Keep fighting the good fight.

I had a really serious clutter problem. I decuttered and decluttered. It took me a really long time, not only legwork but emotionally. The most difficult about downsizing was the newly exposed walls and floors. I was no longer cacooned in my mess. I felt exposed. I had to learn to sit in that, open spaciousness.
I was aquireing for my new condo to have it fully equipped. With everything I donated, I still had more than enough when I tripled my living space. In my new space, I am messy, but constantly decluttering. I am ready for another trip to donate. More importantly...I rarely buy stuff. I save a ton of money and I am not backtracking on progress.

I saw a video recently where you said people in sunny California should put away their winter things to gain more room.
Sunshine is only one factor in weather. We are closer to the colder waters of the Pacific (the Atlantic is warmer).
Mark Twain said “ The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco!“ The cold winds off the Pacific Ocean really make it colder. People in California don’t put their clothes away because the weather can be very variable.
I was visiting from Tennessee when we lived there for a while. At night, I went out with friends. I was freezing! That’s because the. Cold air are off the ocean. Moves in.
Summer start very late. This is June and it’s late night early morning low clouds. So we have to dress in layers. Yes, when the Santa Anna winds coming off the desert, it’s very hot. But we are too worried about fires starting to start put away our winter clothes. And we never know when winter and summer are going to start
I did keep my winter coat, and we were them about two weeks out of the year. Your video got me thinking about putting it away, but where? The houses in Southern California are much smaller.

Makeup & beauty products become contaminated with bacteria in a matter of months of use. Your skin is where they live, then your fingers, brushes, and applicators transfer the bacteria between skin & liquids/powders and back. You should replace makeup every 6mos and wash your face or at least your hands before putting on makeup as much as you can. It's also helpful to replace or clean brushes and applicators often as you can.
When you get a new item that comes with extra buttons, it's best to sew the button on the inside edge of a seam or hem. That way, if a button is lost, you can replace it as soon as you pull out needle and thread, without ever having to wonder if/where a matching button is available.
The 'Outgrown Stuff' category is not just for kids; it can include those things outgrown by weight/dimensions, health restrictions, time/interest rediverted, etc. A middleaged man is unlikely to go snowboarding again. An 85-yr-old woman is unlikely to go backpacking for a week into the mountains. Demanding work or homelife schedules can make it impossible to get back to quilting. Even adults 'outgrow' things.

We have a footstool that's been in our basement for nearly 40 years. Her plan was to recover it, the fabric matches a chair that sits in the corner of our family room and is never, ever used...ever. She refuses to let it go. I don't even know how to address stuff like this!

How To Live In Harmony With Nature And Reduce Pollution
    1. Many Production Which We Do Not Need Actually For Human Beings Has To Be Stopped
We manufacture so many products and it is creating pollution. So if we minimise our products, pollution would be less.
We produce so many things which we do not need, like cold drinks, leather products, potato wafers, chips, fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits, pickles, ice creams, etc.
Cold drinks, fruit juices, pickles, ice creams, etc. Should be cooked at home only.
If we stopped producing this things which are not required for humans, so much pollution could be reduced.
If we colour the clothes pollution occurs. So if we don't colour our clothes, the pollution resulting from colouring the clothes can be stopped. Let everything remain in white natural colour.
    2. We Should Cook Foods In Its Natural Form
We can cook rice and wheat in our homes and eat it. Rice and Wheat is produced in farms. Then it is packed and transported to big warehouses, then wholesalers buy from them and supply to retail shops.
But if a manufacturing company makes bread from rice and wheat, then to make bread a manufacturing company has to be set up, machines and working staffs are needed. When a company is built many other things are also needed. Then at last a plastic pack is required to pack the breads.
So if we start cooking eatable things in its natural form then we do not need many companies like bread manufacturing company, tomato ketchup, noodles, fruit jam, pizza, burger, etc., the things required for the company and the plastic pack, paper box pack and glass bottles. If done like this, so many companies will not be required and hence less pollution for the world.
Also we could save our money like this. If you buy a packet of bread, it would cost you more money than if you cook wheat and rice in home.
Previously before industrial revolution, we didn't have technology, but our foods were rich with nutrients. Now we have technology, but technology is polluting our foods and our foods are not rich with nutrients, and because of that also we have health problems.
If this is done, then many jobs would be lost. For that many peoples should do farming and they should be given loans if they do not have enough money to start farming on their own.
Food, Medicines, Surgeries and Education's should be made free to the world till the world settles down with farming. After that food, medicines, surgeries and education's should be stopped free to the world.
Many people should study botany subject so that they have knowledge of plants and they should do farming.
Is their any another solution, that humans won't lose jobs and also pollution would decrease. Humans have to take this step certainly instead of going on polluting the earth, making wildlife extinct and also mass extinctions of humans in future.
    3. Electricity Pollution
We create electricity from many types of sources like coal, water, etc., but it creates pollution. If electricity created from windmill and solar energy then no pollution occurs in the creation process. But still to manufacture windmill and solar machines pollution would occur.
As I previously said that if we shut down many manufacturing companies which are producing things which are not needed for humans, then the world would not require so much electricity. If less electricity required, then less pollution generated.
    4. Could We Stop Drinking Cow's and Buffalo's Milk
Whatever vitamins and nutrients we get from milk, if we can get it from other eatable things, then we can stop drinking cow's and buffalo's milk. As milk has to be packed in glass bottles and plastic packs and then transported to places. All of this can be stopped.
For infants whose mother's have died or mother's who cannot breast feed their infants, only for them cow's and buffalo's milk should be given. We use milk in tea and coffee. Instead of milk we must use lime with tea and coffee or just plain tea and coffee. A lime should be cut into a few pieces and cooked with tea and coffee or something else can be used instead of lime.
    5. How Much Should Be The World's Population
Every place should have a single house. No buildings, everything ground floor. If we do this and the whole lands of our planet earth would be occupied one day with homes, farms, forests, schools, hospitals, etc., then we would come to know how much our planet earth can have maximum population.
Once the population is determined, then we have to maintain that population. For example if our earth can have a population of 10 billion peoples, then when the population reaches 10 billion, then everyone should have only one child till the population reaches 9 billion peoples. As if we have only one child then the population decreases. When population is 9 billion peoples, then everyone should have 2 children's till the population reaches 10 billion peoples. After that again we should have only one child. In this way population can be maintained.

Are you crazy! You don't get rid of books just because you haven't read them yet!! They're a future enjoyable experience waiting to happen!
Once you've read them, you can assess whether you're likely to read them again, and get rid of them if you're unlikely to reread, but getting rid of them just because they're still on your waiting-to-be-read shelf or pile is pure waste.
Just because they've been on the shelf a couple of years doesn't mean I won't get around to reading them when I'm in the mood for that sort of book. I (like a lot of people) don't read them in the order I acquire them, or based on how long they've been on the shelf, I select the next book based on what I'm on the mood for at the time. I'd be getting rid of four packed shelves of books if I were to junk the ones that haven't been read in over a year - That's just madness.
As a librarian, I agree - books are available from the library. But that's no help if your library doesn't have the book you're interested in (inter-library loans, if they're even available, take time - you could have finished the book from your own collection by the time the library could source and acquire a copy for you to borrow), or if you finish the previous one outside of library opening hours, or whatever.
    Just.. No.
