    Queen: The Studio Collection - 18-disc box set
    High-quality colored vinyl versions of Queen's 15 studio albums!
    Half-speed lacquers cut at Abbey Road Studios; mastered by Bob Ludwig using the original master tapes
    Includes 108-page hardback book w/ archival material from Queen's Brian May, Roger Taylor
    Sumptuous. Vinyl is how listeners first heard the legendary band Queen as the '70s dawned. A new 18-disc box set, Queen: The Studio Collection, features remastered editions of each of the band's albums, including three records - 1974's Queen II, 1991's Innuendo and 1994's Made in Heaven - that have their tracks spread over two LPs.
    Reproduced to the highest standards of audio and artwork, the albums have been mastered by renowned engineer Bob Ludwig using the original source tapes. Miles Showell, at Abbey Road Studios, has perfected the technique of cutting lacquers at half speed. He runs the source file and the cutting lathe at 50% of the normal speed, which means double the accuracy in the cutting of the groove, resulting in superior reproduction of the music.
    Each 180-gram vinyl disc boasts a different color that corresponds to the cover art featured on that album. The Studio Collection also comes packaged with a 108-page hardback book featuring archival material contributed by Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as by fans. The book offers introductions to each album, quotes from band members, rare photos, handwritten lyrics, various pieces of memorabilia and more.
    As for the albums that appear in the set as double discs, Queen II features its tracks split between a black-colored LP and a white-colored LP in honor of the fact that the original record boasted a "Side White" and a "Side Black" rather than a "Side A" and "Side B"; while Innuendo and Made in Heaven, having been issued during the heyday of the CD, featured a run time that wouldn't allow for their songs to fit on a single disc.
    All of the remastered albums also will be available for purchase separately on black vinyl.
    Features:
    • Collector's Edition 15 Albums Box Set (18 LP)
    • Housed in flip-top box with slip-case protective cover
    • Colored Vinyl
    • 180g Vinyl
    • Sourced from original master tapes

    Queen II was originally released as a single disc on the standard EMI tan label, but with the sides dubbed “side white” and “side black”.
    Apart from that volume the rest of the box is more or less exact replica. Off course all discs were originally released on black vinyl except for the Freddie Mercury posthumously released Made in heaven whose first release was on Ivory vinyl.
    Queen did get a comeback in ‘84. Both because of The Works which both had several hits on it and also a few heavier rock tunes which apparently had been missed. But even more important for the comeback was Queens appearance at Live Aid! On the other hand the music video for “I want to break free” turned out to be too camp for many US fans, and Queen lost territory there and actually never toured there again.
    The Innuendo artwork is by french 19th century artist Grandville. (Though off course the band member drawings are not by him)
    The whole box is mastered by Ludwig BUT in the digital domain.
    I used to be a huge Queen fan and I preordered the box at its original release. It’s a beauty throughout. Sound wise it’s fine but nothing special. In my opinion Queens records never really sounded that good… Except for the original UK release of The Game. That one is a KILLER!
    Thank you for all your great videos Michael. I’ve watched them all.
    Greetings from Denmark.

    I just received this boxed set from Acoustic Sounds a week ago. It took me all of 5 minutes or so to decide to buy it. My collection was also really short on Queen albums, so it seemed like a great opportunity. It is an absolutely beautiful set, and the records that I've listened to have all sounded great. I think I'll put on A Night at the Opera to see how Bohemian Rhapsody sounds. It's a song that you just can't help but sing along to at volume 11.. :-)
    I also cleaned all the records as soon as I opened the box, took me quite some time, let me tell you. One of the best bands of all time, no question. They're also one of the smartest, best educated rock band of all time. As a mathematician, it's so inspiring to me that Brian May studied math/physics in college, even completing a PhD in astrophysics in 2007! Freddie even used his degree in graphic art and design when he came up with that awesome Queen coat of arms logo. They were also complete professionals perfectly in sync with each other, behind all the flash. There's a youtube video that analyzes their performance for Live Aid (I think), and it's kind of amazing all the many little details in those few minutes that most people wouldn't notice at all. There was a LOT of planning/practice so that they could give the best performance possible and still finish within the time limits they were allowed. All the performers were given a strict time limit, so Queen worked at doing the proper instrument setup in the shortest time possible to have more time to perform, even checking the tuning their instruments.

    Queen, my favorite band since I was a child. Love every album and every song. I’m into vinyl since 2017 and first thing a look for was Queen. At the time it was sold out. 2015 1st edition of the box. But I’ll find one for little more money. Because I thought it will not be repressed. I’m satisfied with the quality of the box, covers and vinyl. The sound is good to very good. The problem is, could it be better? Michael Fremer showed email from Bob Ludwig. He said: it’s mastered from digital files because the tapes are not in a good condition. We did the best we could and spend a long time to make this records as good as it could be.
    Fremer did not said that sound is bad directly, but he think so. He does. I saw a video where he comments a Rega Queen edition turntable and said “Great turntable, if only records from Queen box sounds good it will be great match “
    With all I know about that, this could be definitive version of Queen in terms of sound quality. If they do something better I will be the first who will buy it 🙂
    I’m surprised that you didn’t have this box already, but I’m glad you do now. And thank you for doing a video about my favorite band records.
    Cheers Michael!

      If I remember correctly in that same review/discussion by Fremer on Queen, he said something along the lines of Bob Ludwig has to follow the directions of the client and publicly voicing disagreement would not be good for business. I read into that, that Ludwig may not have fully agreed with how Queen wanted the new remaster 'voiced' but that was what the client wanted. They aren't bad but IMO they could have been better even if from digital files.

    I'm glad you decided to do a video on this great box set. I was also very impressed with the quality of the vinyl pressings. The colored vinyl sounds as good as black. Flat, quiet & centered. I agree with you on everything except for your comment about the album covers. I would say they are good overall (not just "average"). All are faithful reproductions of the originals with all inserts and posters. In detail here are the highlights of the "special features" for some of the releases:
    Queen II - as you mentioned it's on 2 single-sided LPs available only in this box set
    A Night At The Opera - Embossed cover like original. VMP version has metallic lettering but not embossed.
    Jazz - Embossed cover + poster as the original.
    The Game - Metallic cover as the original
    Innuendo - Spot varnish gatefold cover. Original was not gatefold and on one LP with some songs edited to fit.
    Made in Heaven - Posters & LP with full track lengths for first time

    Great box. Is one of the highlights of my collection.
    Your bad experience with Abbey Road half speed mastered albums, I can not share. I have over 20 half speed mastered Abbey Road releases and only the one Rolling Stones is really not good. E.g. the 4-LP box Marvin Gaye -What's going on is sonically close to the US version of the album by Kevin Gray.
    Only the vinyl and pressing is of course not up to the standard as the RTI or Pallas pressed vinyl. You should be a little more open to the Abbey Road things again, that also worked with Optimal. The Abbey Road titles are for the general market, not audiophile releases of your quality standards, but they are affordable, sounding good and you can get them too and don't have to order abroad.
    A Queen complete box set by Chad Kassem ? How much should that cost ? 1500 or 2000 Euro?

    Any standouts sound wise so far? I’ve heard a few people say that the Queen II pressing in this set has a superior cover to the original that is sharper…they really did a good job plus they really cleaned up the sound of that album. The original of Queen II isn’t the best sounding from the originals.

    • @mattmcgourty7971
      @mattmcgourty7971 Před 2 lety +2

      I have the set, the earlier albums (debut through jazz) all beat out my original US copies and I’m selling them. They have insane clarity and a lot more bass than my “anemic” sounding us copies. However from the game on they are on par with the US originals in my opinion. I’ve heard that this pressing of Queen II beats out a UK original but I can’t vouch for that since I don’t have an original UK. The a night at the opera pressing is almost as good as an original uk (which i have) but falls a little short, the uk sounds a little bit “warmer” sounding i guess. Hopes this helps. Also, YES the queen ii cover looks f ing amazing. If you don’t get the box at least get the stand alone reissue online somewhere.

    Began collecting Queen from the first album, first US release - this coincided with seeing them (2nd-row center Capitol Threatre, Passiac NJ) with Kansas (first tour) and Argent. Still have all my LPs, carefully maintained. I Like the candid review. Not a great fan of the later work - too much vocal excess but I purchased anyway as Brian May is a great guitarist.

  • @tobbebonzo
    @tobbebonzo Před 2 lety +6

    I had this box set but got rid of it after comparing it to the UK originals. In comparison these remasters sounded compressed and very ”digital” (which of course they are). The originals had that warm analog touch we all love. Not saying the remasters are bad, but if you want the best I’d hunt clean copies of the UK originals. My two cents…

    • @mattmcgourty7971
      @mattmcgourty7971 Před 2 lety +1

      I would second this, but for US buyers this is the next best thing. It’s hard as hell and super expensive to hunt down original UKs that are clean, especially their first 3 or so albums and their last 2.

    • @sbhand5740
      @sbhand5740 Před 2 lety +2

      I came to the same conclusion. The sound of the remasters seems to have been as Queen (Brian May and Roger Taylor) wanted, with the CD's sounding the same as the vinyl. Original UK pressings sound much better and in some cases, even the US pressings. Possible exceptions maybe Queen II and the last few albums that were digital already (avoid the Hollywood remasters) or had very limited vinyl runs. Not a bad box set if you want to get the entire discography in one go but a bit of a fail for a dedicated Queen fan looking for the very best sonic experience.

    • @KRAZEEIZATION
      @KRAZEEIZATION Před rokem +1

      Remastering is a gimmick. It’s just a way to rehash music and sell it to people that already bought it. Mostly compressed and lifeless compared to the original analog cuts (where applicable). I don’t think I’ve ever bought a remaster that sounded better than an original. Half the time you get the original album and then a few outtakes but mostly live stuff that has nothing to do with it!
      What’s worse to accommodate this you have rejigged artwork that spoils the original. If a stand alone album is great enough then it should be left like that.

Next in line would be the next 2 albums. A Night At The Opera and A Day At The Races. Still great albums but both show Queen transitioning into their next phase of sound. I am not really a Queen fan, just have the old MFSL "A Night at the Opera" for songs like Bohemian Rhapsody and Love of my Life, i.e. for sentimental reasons more or less. It sounds really good, but has become absurdly expensive nowadays. Does someone here have the DCC which is even more expensive? Does is sound better?

    My favorite Queen is the “no synthesizers” era. I did pick up a few of the single Bob Ludwig reissues and found them to be mastered quietly. They sounded good except for a defect in song one of Queen II. I am stuck with it; bought it used.

    About come back. Actually after The Works they feel like they need a break. Then Live Aid happened and Queen did a most amazing gig a the crowd and press said it was the best one at Live aid. After that they simply stayed together and next year A Kind Of Magic came out.
    So. It was never a break and logically no come back.

    "The Works". Yep. It is kind of a 'come-back' album - after the (USA) failure of "Hot Space" and taking a well-earned couple of years off. (Ignore the movie plot about this period - it's wrong.)
    "The Works" - so called because Freddie, I believe, said "let's give them the works" for this album. And they did! So much variety of music.

    I have many of those albums as UK 1st Presses which I have owned from new, sadly I find that even the UK 1st pressings have consistently poor sound quality, dull and flat sounding, at the end of the day if the master tapes are poor no amount of remastering will make them sound better, the other artist whose recordings sound consistently poor is Elton John, quite why I have never been able to ascertain, other artists have the odd bad recording but often there are also stunning sounding recordings in the catalogue. Maybe the studio, recording equipment, recording engineer or a lack of care and attention? You cannot make a silk purse from a sows ear?

    I’m a fan of your channel but these pressings are the same masters (from digital source) which were used for the 2011 CD’s. They lack incredible in dynamics and even before I got into audiophile records (and equipment) I noticed it lacked all the dynamics and quality my original Dutch pressings did have (let alone org UK’s). As a matter of fact, some years ago, this was my eyeopener to not trust any release and check the source. I do not understand why you advice this box to your viewers. Given the fact of it’s digital source and without giving even one original (or just one analog) record a spin.

    I have all original Queen albums on vinyl or on CD or most of the time both and I can say that originals are hardly matched. You do not improve perfection. Especially the first ones (up to The Game) which were on Elektra records. This vinyl label always made fine pressings which can not be said of all labels.
    Of course this box set is fantastic for someone who has few Queen albums and visual is splendid.
    Hours of pleasure garanteed and "danger" of cracking for the music of Queen.
