It was a shame that after the war ended, the Americans refused to pay the war damages to Vietnam, and even worse, they embargoed Vietnam for 19 years. That is why I feel frustrated when Asian countries around Vietnam ask why Vietnam is not yet a developed country. It's not that Vietnam is underdeveloped, but because we suffered so much war, we started to rebuild the country from a negative number, not from zero or from a positive number like your country.

Any children of Vietnam vets feel glad that Vietnam and the men who fought is being discussed openly now ? I felt so strange growing up there was a void in my father and in our house and it felt like it was unspeakable . I feel like with access to a lot more information and stories like this helps me understand my dad somewhat better and approach him to talk and ask him the right questions and then I listen . It seems cathartic to him
The way they were treated when they came home. The government wanted to forget this war and thus forgot them. As their children it is our job to help them. Help them heal. The way no one else would at the time

My uncle said when he came home he was spat on, had trash thrown on him, called traitor and murderer. He was 28 and had finished his last tour when the war ended.

My uncle is a Vietnam veteran and he does have friends who were part of this trip. Not in this video,but around the same time. They said it was a closure and for them it was emotional at times, but as for my Uncle he'll never go back there. He's been sober since 1988 and knows this trip for him would be a trigger for relapse and his PTSD which has gotten better. But at times does have episodes
My uncle is one of those who will never go back. He said his closure came from getting sober & therapy. He came back after 2 yrs a different person.

My grandpa also served in Vietnam unfortunately I never got to see him because he died in 2005 just a few months before I was born may God bless his soul. My grandpa was in the Air Force and he would send signals to bomber planes and those bomber planes would come in and bomb their positions I know this because my dad told me about it my grandpa also served in Korea

Fun fact the Plane on the back in 3:12 is a Cessna A-37 Dragonfly, many were given to the South as the US evacuated and they were either destroyed or captured and the plane continues to see active service in Peru and El Salvador and other Latin American countries

It doesn't affect our culture at all but it affects us physically and the ability to learn for some people

My uncle is a Vietnam War veteran too!
He served in the VNAF, and became the commander of his own squadron in 1974, the year he was promoted to LtCol.
Remember these men were the same men that were spat on by fellow Americans when they returned home from the war. Extremely sad how we treated these guys back in the day.
Many refused to go to Vietnam and suffered the consequences for it. These men went to Vietnam killed innocent civilians including thousands of children, for no reason. They could've refused to go but they didnt want to pay the legal consequences so they went and killed Vietnamese people for no reason.

I have had one of the best classmates who graduated and became a pharmacist right before 1975 in Vietnam. I was not that lucky and I joined the military for 6.5 years. Then, I found a chance to get out of Saigon and I arrived to US in 1979. God bless America!

vietnam is a country of strong will and hope. 1000 year story of resisting occupiers. Glad to see the relationship mending. It's a darn shame the paranoia of the cold war split what could have been a great relationship from the start. I still remember learning about vietnam's good will towards the US before the war. cheers at seeing american planes shows there was never a hatred for the US from the start. We could have been good friends for far longer then now.
Seeing these men return on a tour makes it seem like the war was fought for nothing.

Many American's trying to find mistakes they made caused to US failure in Vietnam War --- I'am telling you some thing : Come to Vietnam now, you'll see how the Vietnamese People, old and young are smilling to you, talking with you friendly just like the real friends -- would you take a fight against your friend ?

Though I'm a North Vietnamese when my family moved to Saigon in 1975. But when the south lost, I even hated North VietCong more. My parents told me that since they moved here, they had a better life . Saigon in those time very beautiful until VietCong ruined it. My dad remember a soldier of America gave him a chocolate bar. Old generation of South Vietnam & North Vietnam ( people whom moved to South Vietnam in 1954&1975 ) really loved America. I luv America too.

In any war exists good people on either side. I consider the Vietnam war a tragedy brought about by paranoia over what seemed like a slippery slope with the spread of communism, current sentiments at the time it started, and corruption within the US government sending young and well intentioned people to fight and die in an effort many didn't want to be a part of. Others were told they were fighting to preserve democracy by holding back the perceived domino effect I previously mentioned. The US, VC, and NVA all had their fair share of doing terrible things in the war such as mistreatment of POWs, killing of civilians, and other war crimes, the dioxins caused various problems even long after it's ban.
With the war now long over. The best thing to do is to reconcile and continue trying to heal. An enemy is only an enemy during wartime and that time has long passed.

My father served and (yes my dad please don’t judge I’m 14) and I looked in his eyes the first time he told me he served and promised him I would never go to war so he wouldn’t have to worry about me not coming back

@@shahidanor2021no way you have to assume his father committed war crimes, a majority were locked into a contract and had to do it or face severe punishment. Yet, vietnam has grown to be one of our closest allies. Go educate yourself.
Just imagine this soldiers served to win but at the end they lose because of they're cocky president or government that think war makes everything right. Now vietnam is a great country that has a past of America's blood and sweat where wasted. R.I.P for the young soldiers that didn't make it back to the home they wanted to stay. Majority of the people already agreed on the stablished communism ideology, why communism? Because we were always enslaved by the richer imperial nations, of course that ideology would thrive better, then a forgiven country bringing in their governance again.
My next generation would be the last to see them in face and hear those incredible stories if they would get the privilege to do so.
Everyone talking about the Americans and Vietnams but what about my Hmong people? We fought along U.S. soldiers and helped them, we still fought when the U.S. army left us behind and many of our Hmong people died sacrificing for the U.S. soldiers while they run back to their country.. we don't even get any respect, General Vang Pao was a father to the Hmong people and without him we would've probably be all dead and gone

There are many Hmong in America today, and they are honored for their efforts.
A school in my city is named after him, and it even has dual immersion in Hmong.

My father is from the north but fought for the south. I’m so proud of him and have tears in my eyes every time I think of the horrible conditions they lived through during those times
Some posters here have said North Vietnam should have received "reparations" from the U.S. As a commenter at the time remarked: "If Vietnam wants reparations, let them go and ask Sweden. After all, Sweden outspokenly supported the North Vietnamese during the war. Including Swedish journalists watching as American POW's were paraded through the streets of Hanoi, while being beaten and mocked by the crowd".

Ive never understood these Vets wanting to go back. You couldnt pay my Dad to go back.Hes 74 and last time he flew was his flight back from Vietnam in 1971. He says " I used up all my good luck in the air".
I haven't picked up a gun since I left Vietnam and I don't want to go back. I have watched some videos of Vietnam today and the young people look and act like most young folks anywhere in the world. At least they have only known peace.

Both NV and SV's people are Vietnamese, we just want to become one single independent nation rather than two warring ones. SV government was a puppet ever since its birth, most of its people preferred the NV's government and hated SV's officials, that's why it fell, that's why we could erased NV government.

Have you heard of McNamara's Morons/Project 100,000/McNamara's Folly? The effort to get more bodies/soldiers into Vietnam had the elite determining that putting truly mentally handicapped people into battle would help. i.e. Forrest Gump, but with out the fantasy of dumb luck heroics. They couldn't figure out how to fire a weapon. Regular soldiers would load empty clips, out of fear of being accidentally shot by a dude that is oblivious to their gun pointing at fellow soldiers. We literally had retards going into gun battles with no bullets in their guns.
In addition, you seem to forget that the South Vietnamese didn't like the foreign armies either. 18.2 million gallons of Agent Orange dumped by the US...500,000 Vietnam babies born with the most f'ed up deformities. US soldiers were killing and burning down innocent civilians huts. The MASSIVE numbers are disputed from 1000's to 100's of thousands.
To add to this, the US military dropped 260 million cluster bombs - about 2.5 million tons of munitions - on Laos over the course of 580,000 bombing missions. This is equivalent to a planeload of bombs being unloaded every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years - nearly seven bombs for every man, woman and child living in Laos. Up to 30 percent of them failed to detonate. More than 34,000 people have been killed or injured by cluster munitions since the bombing ceased in 1973, with close to 300 new casualties in Laos every year. About 40 percent of the accidents result in death and 60 percent of the victims are children. At this time, less than 1 percent of the UXOs have been cleared.
