I finally don’t want a new camera anymore. Took me a while, but my current camera is it. I’ve learned it. I can operate it without looking at it ( the basic settings I change or set often) and now I’m about to settle at one focal length. Just sent two lenses in to trade for it. I actually have bad anxiety about my camera malfunctioning because it’s been discontinued and you can only buy it used now. I seriously don’t want to use anything else!

One of my greatest joys of photography is is discovering a new way to make one camera, one lens work. Creating something where there was nothing.

"Light, timing, and composition is all that matters". One would think more of us (photographers) would understand that, but we don't. I so love these conversations with Dan. He is so spot on with his observations. I humbly admit I am a gear fanatic but these talks you two put on have inspired me to stick with one focal length for personal work. And, not surprisingly, I love the experience. It has forced me to think more about a consistent body of work, for my personal work. Please keep doing these!!

I’m unable to go live with you but I thoroughly enjoy the words of wisdom you chaps give out.
I thought you would like to know that during the lockdown period we endured in Melbourne and when we were unable to move more than 5 kilometers from home I photographed what was transpiring around me. Over 9 months I took pictures of people learning to live one and a half Meters from each other, eating takeaways, wearing masks and the range of designs, conducting workouts in the park etc etc. When in November our Premier announced we had beaten the virus (or so we believed) I produced a 32 page book of what I had taken. It was so appreciated by several shops that they bought copies from me. Being in lockdown taught me to really look at what people do and observe mood changes from periods of despondency to elation and joy at being able to meet together again and appreciate each other.
Again thank you for inspiring me.
    Roy P.

I used to be “that photographer;” two Canon DSLRS around my neck, heavy backpack weighed down with tons of gear which would rarely be taken out of my bag, etc. Then I decided last year it was time to consolidate. Traded in those DSLRS, picked up the R5, and now stick with my RF 100mm f/2.8L on the single camera for 98% of what I’m shooting. What a relief! And my work is indeed better for it following this decision 😎.

    • @johnhoey4605
      @johnhoey4605 Před 2 lety +1

Yeah--the R5 isn’t the lightest Mirrorless out there, as we all know. But one camera/one lens is the way to go! Everything else pretty much stays home-unless I know for sure there’s a need for a different lens or “look” I’m trying to capture.

So I went to Cologne last week - noticing on the train that I "forgot" a 2nd lens. 3 hours to get there, 3 hours back - only with my beloved Fuji X-T1 and the 23mm 1.4 in my bag. The other day back home, watching the results, I felt pretty happy about one of the best photography trips during the last months.

    A great conversation.
I started photography in 1998 with a F2 and a 50mm S-Auto 1:1.4 I bought as a “kit”. I used this setup for years because I had no intention and the money to “upgrade”. Now I have tons of lenses in my collection which not really make any difference. For travel and street photography my Leica M8 with the 21mm Super-Angulon or the M9 with the 50 Cron is all I need to shoot for years. Nature, macro and landscape stuff is another thing where other focal lengths and also zooms come in very handy but as you said the main things are lighting, composition, timing and lots of training the rest is nonsense and just distracts.

I really love this kind of videos, where you talk about Photography and not about megapixels. When I started with photography I was a gear addict, I had various lenses, filters ecc. I can't say it hasn't been helpulf, in that time I learned focal lenghts, how to achieve an effect and so on. Now I'm using 90% a X100V with fix lens, and I'm thinking to sell my Nikon Z6.
You say that light, timing and composition is the key. I'm ok with light and composition, but I think timing is more important for some kind of photgraphy like documentary or street photography. I'm thinking about Eggleston (cars, fast foods...), in his photography I can find light and composition, but not timing like in Martin Parr’s. Did I get "wrong" the timing concept?
    Thank you

You gave me some very serious thoughts for the weekend! Anyway, I continue photographing old barns, before they're all gone. The snowy winter of 2018 a lot of them collapsed, and one winter more like that one, the rest might be gone. Too I'll photograph the static ash trees before their gone too, because of the new beetle that is likely to kill them all. And remember, we have no culture left, like in the Mid West or Latin America.

Back in the day, people needed a camera to take a photo.
Now you need your phone and that’s it.
When people see a camera, they think something is up, you’re not just the average joe, you have a camera. Somethings wrong, what’s going on.
Try it, use your iPhone for a month, no one will care,

love your videos, Sir. I am a 47 year old man, having Leica M10-P *white* limited edition + 50mm f/1.4 Summilux since 2020 January . . . now thinking of 2nd prime like Zeiss Milvus 25mm f/1.4 or Sigma Art 28mm f/1.4 for my 2nd body - Canon 6D (purchased in 2013), to capture wide/landscape shots or street/urban scenes. Can't make up my mind if i should sell 6D & get Sony A7 mirrorless with a small Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 instead of buying 1 of those 2 huge DSLR primes, & the Sony has IBIS too which the 6D lacks.

stick to that 50 f/1.4 for the next two years... you won't get all of the shots you would like to... but that doesn't change when you add another lens... after two years you might consider going tele or wider... (35, 28 or even 24). keep on shooting like there is no tomorrow!
