  • Since the early days of the medium, the UK has arguably led the way when it comes to KIDS TV... but now, it seems like the genre is not only on a slump, but is actively in some ways or others being phased out from traditional television entirely... being pushed towards a natural end...
    But why is this happening? Are children just not consuming the content anymore? Or are other factors on a wider scale at work... Is This The END of KIDS TV?! Is There Any Hope?

    To be honest, sending kids shows to streaming might be pretty dangerous for the future of television, if they're pushing away the next generation of viewers now, why would they come back when they're older?

    Aussie here. I’m 17 now,(born in 2006) and as a kid up until only a few years ago, we simply didn’t have any kind of home internet. My mum had a flip phone with 3G and a USB dongle for her laptop that hooked into it. She couldn’t afford the $50+ a month for broadband, so I just didn’t have any access to the internet at home. Sometimes I’d go to the library or my friends house to watch Minecraft videos but from the ages of 2 up until about 12, my only entertainment at home was free to air content, and I pretty much only watched ABC 4 Kids and ABC3 (basically Cbeebies and CBBC respectively) and I have lots of fond memories of that time, sometimes my mum would let me watch the adult channels like ABC2 and that was how I got into stuff like Doctor Who. And I have no doubt that especially now with many people, parents in particular cutting the internet cord because of the cost of living crisis, many a kid will grow up the same way I did, with whatever’s on the telly. I don’t know what I would have done as a kid if my TV shows were just all gone one day, that would be devastating. Traditional, Free-To-Air Kids TV is still vital

    I've noticed that TV programming for younger children has generally fared better in recent years, and much of the most celebrated children's TV content in recent years has targeted this younger demographic, typically 5 and under. Where things seem to have declined the most is the programming in the 6-12+ range, I remember in the 90's in the UK this was a creative haven of offbeat comedies, hard hitting dramas and madcap game shows. And while there have been a few gems more recently (I was pleasantly surprised by the Demon Headmaster revival, and I'm sad COVID caused series 2 to be cancelled as the child cast were now too old) there's not really been something so iconic like Grange Hill or Byker Grove which still gets talked about to this day. It makes me wonder if older children are more interested in content from CZcams or Twitch, they'd rather watch a let's play than a serialised drama set in a high school or youth club, or a game show where contestants wear silly costumes and get covered in gunge. Or maybe they prefer to watch adult shows on streaming services, Stranger Things probably doesn't have anything they haven't already seen online. And there's a few reboots of kids shows from the 80's and 90's mining nostalgia from millennial audiences, that's probably something older children could be into as well even if they don't get some of the jokes and references.

    • @alexwells6876
      @alexwells6876 Před 11 měsíci +2

      And it makes you wonder, what came first? The channels cutting down on shows for older kids or the older kids losing interest resulting in less of those types of shows being made? I would put it down to the older age range taking more of an interest in streaming and naturally as you get older you have more of an idea of what you like and don't like, so they go straight to Netflix or Prime Video, but the decline in programming for older kids on TV started years ago. The thing is, you don't see independent creators making things for that age range either, like on CZcams or Vimeo. All of the independent creators i watch on CZcams aren't kid friendly. Maybe i'm just not aware of them, but they seem few and far between.
      So there's this gap between the streaming services and traditional TV where there could be independents creating things, which then leaves room for a new platform as a home for these programs, because with the fall in investment of kids programming on TV, the likes of CBBC, ITV and Channel 5 most likely won't be interested. But it seems that whenever there's writers for kids TV shows, they always go to the main TV channels, instead of putting it together for CZcams, Vimeo or another site, why is that? Is there even a film festival equivalent to BFI or Sundance that's strictly for kids short films and TV shows? I mean, look at Don't Hug Me I'm Scared as an example. They made the first film completely independently, but that resulted in it winning awards at festivals, and a successful Kickstarter for future projects. You just don't see this type of ambition for kid centric online content.

      @@alexwells6876 If you told 10 year old me watching someone play video games and talk about random stuff would be a very popular form of children's entertainment in 15 years time I would have said something along the lines of "that sounds boring!". Even now I wonder why you'd pick it over any decent children's TV of my era (if it were in HD/4K).

    • @alexwells6876
      @alexwells6876 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@Croz89 yeah it is mind boggling, but maybe that age range doesn't know what they're missing if the TV channels don't target them as audience anymore. If they do want to watch kids TV they have to go looking for it (not that there's much to look for in the way of British stuff) on the streaming services. But Twitch does have the shared viewing experience element and i think that could partly be the answer to a new platform. I mentioned it in another comment thread, a platform like Twitch but strictly for original high quality kids TV Shows that live stream, targeted for 6 -12 year olds. With scheduling and maybe a safe social element like Twitch's chat feature but simplified so that kids could react to what they're watching in some way. The content just needs to be there and would probably involve some scouting for projects as well as advertising for creators to apply. I think shared viewing can still work really well, it just needs to be adapted for modern day.

    As someone whose dream job was CBBC continuity host for most of my childhood, I find the whole push to streaming services so bizzare and also SO dangerous for both viewers and streamers. The SAG/WGA strike proved that wide-scale, on-demand streaming services aren't sustainable, and pushes a quantity over quality mindset. Which is absolutely terrifying when you consider that children's programming is already considered low priority??? The reason people loved CBBC/CITV was because they were channels that were dedicated solely to high-standard programming for kids and teens, and people noticed when the quality started to slump! Pushing children into streaming services makes me fear for the quality of the broadcasts they'd get. It means more mindless 'shapes and colours!!' and less crafted storytelling. If streaming continues to prove itself unsustainable, and iPlayer is forced to cut the amount of dedicated shows for its platform, there's a 101% chance that it's children's programming that'll see the chop first. Kids deserve high quality entertainment too, and i really fear they'd lose it. (and if you grow up on cheap streaming, who's to say you'd go back to linear when you're an adult?)
    I also think a lot of adults have noticed that children/minors are flooding 'adult spaces' like social media, (COPPA, GDPR, and KOSA are all fairly recent legislation dedicated to prioritising children's safety in online spaces) but i don't think people really have put too much focus on the fact that it's because children's spaces are disappearing. the cbbc and cbeebies websites aren't nearly as bright and detailed as it was 10 years ago -- they're both a minimalist catalogue of shows, with a handful of browser games (they don't even make funny noises anymore). I think pushing children out of dedicated linear entertainment will have a really similar effect too. There are parents that won't have the money for streaming services or smart TVs, and there are parents that simply don't want to give their kids that freedom; which means more children watching regular BBC/ITV programming with the rest of their family, and more complaints about the lack of child-friendly materal on channels that previously didn't care for children's content. Whilst it's absolutely a stretch, I wouldn't be surprised if this led to watershed timings being pushed way back to accommodate for angry parents, leading to both adults and kids not getting the shows they deserve.

    I'm glad you brought up the quick dopamine hits because i was gonna mention it. My 7 year old niece is into the Shorts feature on CZcams Kids, she's allowed to watch it at home in small doses i think, but whenever she's at mine and she puts it on my heart sinks a bit. It's just video after video after video, she'd sit there all day if she could, it seems to completely pull them in and what's more is the content is usual low quality, unimaginative stuff. I didn't say anything at first but i'm putting a ban on CZcams Kids on my TV now, and will need to talk to my sister about it.
    We would have reacted to it exactly the same way if CZcams Shorts had come around 20 or so years earlier when we were kids. But this situation is still new, the kids of today are the first 'TikTok generation' and the like, it's anti entertainment in a way. I don't think it's good for kids at all, hopefully a lot of parents see that type of stuff for what it is, cause i think it could really affect kids behavior if they watch it a lot, especially those that already have attention problems like my niece does. Sometimes it just feels like we've took a huge step back with kids entertainment, things like CZcams Shorts and TikTok shouldn't be a kids main source of entertainment because if you let them i think it easily would be, it's all down to parent's intuitive to set boundaries at the end of the day
    All of this talk always makes me want to do something about it, it's something i've become more aware of and cared more about in the last few years. The UK has lost some of it's identify in Kids TV, there's far less original British stuff being made these days, we need to get some of the spark back. As for the shared viewing experience, i really think real time live streaming (similar to Twitch) could be the answer, but i can't imagine streaming services taking an interest in a live feature. ITVX has it, but for how long? It probably would need a new risk taking platform to lead the way that only live streams it's content. Twitch is more popular than ever and maybe it could work by taking a page out of their book, there's definitely some potential there somewhere.

    The 62% drop includes the loss of the Disney channels which made up a chunk of that 62%.
    There is the saying "people want what they get, but they don't get what they want". In TV if you put money in to anything people will watch it.
    TV has an issue where when it launched it was condemned as being low brow and for low intelligent people and so high brow drama was always given the priority. Kids TV was seen as low brow so it was always seen as not what they wanted but it brought in the viewers.
    Streaming no matter the genre doesn't work well because people are watching at different speeds so you can't get "water cooler moments" where the day after you get people talking about what they watched on TV the evening before.
    Kids TV has always had peaks and funding cuts. If there was to be a CEO of ITVplc who understands the advantage and potential of children's programming it would help the industry. Michael Grade was ITV's CEO when CITV started it's decline. CITV is important because it was the biggest commercial TV programme producer. It was blamed on junk food advertising ban however when there was a ban on cigarettes it didn't mean drama funding was reduced. There is always potential for liner kids TV to recover but like anything in TV you need a desire by those that decides what goes on screen to have good kids TV and when they find that passion and desire more programmes will follow. In CITV's 1998 rebrand back to invision presenting they had that desire and passion and it was very successful for them until they cut funding.

I mean as an adult I often struggle on what to watch and i have a long history of shows I do and don't like, which started with whatever was on cbbc, citv ect where you didnt have a choice and so could discover things. It might also remove some of that social interaction at school as a fair amount of talk was about did you see the newest episode of x or this show is better because... When youve got thousands of kids shows to see at any time the liklihood of kids having seen the same thing decreases. With streaming, we lose all shared viewing experiences and the progression of a series over many weeks. Those my age will remember Around The World With Willy Fog. It was an epic run, spanning half a year in weekly episodes. The space between each episode gave you time to reflect on the story so far, to anticipate where it might go next. The airing of the final episode was an event. Anyone who was there, will know all about the occasion being celebrated with the now culturally significant historic moment of National Willy Fog Day. But with streaming, the whole series could be viewed in a single day. If a kid started watching at 10am, they could binge the entire series by 8pm. That can't be a healthy way to watch, in many ways. A knock-on effect of watching on demand in this way, is how many other shows you would miss out on by transfixing your attention to just one series, then the next, then the next. Think of how many other shows you'd watch between one week's instalment and the following. Time moving on, children growing up. Before you know it, you've binged on what you wanted for your entire childhood and completely missed other stuff which would have been so valuable as either entertainment or education. How many of us, as kids, would have chosen to watch Newsround? Nobody ever switched on the TV specifically to watch Newsround. It was a five minute hurdle you had to jump to reach Byker Grove, after watching Super Ted. We didn't want it, but we definitely needed it.

I think that what will happen is that they'll close CBBC in 2025, but they'll keep the remaining kids channels until they've ironed out all of the problems that you brought up, then they'll gradually phase out the kids channels until there's no longer a kids section; like what happened with the Gaming and Dating section on Sky.

    Having got two teenagers myself...they simply don't watch any of the linear channels.....and never has done! We are now in 2023..., so, to me, it makes sense that the linear channels are going. This ain't the 70's...the "tradition" of sitting in front of the TV as soon as you got home from school (like I did) went out when BBC1 ditched all afternoon/teatime children's content many years ago! There are means to monitor what your kids are watching (M$FT Family and Apple Family!) it's just that a lot of parents I talk too, just can't be bothered. Most children have Smart Phones and thus access to You Tube, TikTok etc already (probably the cause of the rise Children's Mental Health issues, but that's another conversation!). I get really annoyed when access to the internet is discussed....a few years ago, certain political party advocated a basic internet service for all, but was royally kicked in the bollocks as how dare they suggest such a scheme....poor people made a "choice" and thus deserve to be kicked when they're down on a daily basis....right!!?? {sigh} As more things go online, we now need a universal Internet Service so that we can all advance together! Freely will help out with access to the content. I'm afraid that we all need to move on from our childhoods!

    Viewing has becomes a more insular thing to do, nowadays. No longer do families share the experience of watching a TV show, or even being in the same room with the central screen, i.e. television, being on for all to watch at the same time as a family unit. Instead, each family member goes their own way, watching whatever they want, whenever they want on their own individual screens and having no kind of interaction going on between themselves and other members of the family. Having no form of commonality of experiencing the same shows together. Having a schedule/routine of doing certain things at certain times during the day is what gives structure to your life. Television time used to be part of that, in that kids would once watch programmes directed toward them at a certain time of the day. i.e. between coming home from school and the early evening of 6-7pm. All of that has gone now. There's no feeling of occasion or cohesion of what it is you would do at such times of the day. Even the TV schedules seem void of any cohesion, apart from soaps and the news. I don't even recognise the main BBC channels now. There was a time when you could tell what day of the week, and even what time of day it was, by the programmes that were on. Not now. It's just all bland, mediocre day-time television shows as far as the eye can see, with more repeats, (especially on the same day), than ever before.

Plus a safe social element for kids added to the mix like the Twitch chat but simplified where they can react to what they're watching with other kids in some way. I read with interest what you are saying. I disagree that ITV needs to be shut down i agree that the channel is rubbish. I think the channel needs to go in a new direction i think the content on the main channel is absolute dire and unwatchable. I rarely if ever watch the main ITV1 channel there is absolutely nothing worth watching. The only ITV channel i watch is ITV2 mostly for Family Guy, American Dad and Plebs when its shown occasionally the stand up comedy sketch show. I think the people who run ITV those who are in management, those commission tv shows, those who make shows for ITV need to be replaced with people who understand what viewers want to watch.
    I think tv channels in the UK should follow the way American tv companies make tv shows with what viewers want to watch and if viewing figures fall below a certain standard then the show is cancelled and replaced with something else and in the autumn the new season is revealed to audiences with shows that have been successful and new shows for the new season. It works on us tv channels i don’t see why it can't work on uk tv shows.
    As for the BBC the network fares slightly better their tv shows are ok i mostly watch BBC1. BBC 2 used to be good channel but this year for me personally has fallen below par. I do think those who are at management level the DG the board of directors all need to resign and replaced.
