And then there's me who uses a 6'2" broomstick
Got to a lumber store and buy a 72+ inch dowel that is 1 1/8" diameter. Cut to your between your eye and full height,
I bought my bo staff from you 2ish years ago and had gotten it to give me a fun way to do some cardio to shed some of the tremendous weight ive packed on over the last 5 years. Since it came in the mail it spent the last 2 years behind my man cave door because i adopted two newborn babies since it came and have spent 25 hours a day nurturing them. Now that my daughter is 2 and her brother is 1 it has become time to make some progressive moves. I just cut it to my height and started with a number 1 spin. After about 5 minutes i had the motion down enough to increase my speed and can say WOW what a workout getting to 100 rotations is and i physically fee like my internal energy has a big fat smile. Thanks for your videos and your website. Love it all!

FYI: That is called a bow saw, not a hack saw. So, you used a bow saw to cut your bo staff.
I am also a TMNT fan, basically since forever, and it makes a lot more sense to me now why Donatello (from TMNT) has a bow staff, "The Ultimate Weapon of a Peaceful Warrior", and Now I'm considering getting one myself. :D
Thanks so much Jake!!!

once i start geting in to martial arts mostly kung fu you were the first person to teach me a move. in my opinion your the most legendary and best kung fu artist ever
Thank you, for your video's, I have been practicing bo staff fighting, spinning, for well over two years. I have lost a 100 plus lbs, and am keeping it off. I enjoy this fighting style, I also agree and was pleased to hear you say do many types of training, not just one. I believe this too. Thank you, I really enjoyed watching your video's. Be blessed.
Great vid. I do woodshop at school, and we do sanding and staining and stuff. Now I can put my sanding skills to good use on staffs.
Wow that quote about having respect to your weapon really made me look at it a different way, very inspirational
My step Son has been studding Ti Kwan Do for the past couple years and he is really wanting a BO Staff, he is now 17 years old, he is pretty good, he has only been doing it for a little over two years and has been allowed to skip belts as he does his tests, so thanks for this video
hey Jake mace I'm a huge fan of your teaching. Can you make a video on throwing knives? please I've always wanted to learn how to throw knives
Yes! In the mean time watch these:

Wonderful information, thanks for sharing. Jake I'm handecaped, I am very interested in learning about martial arts, Bo and stick fighting for self defense. I can walk with crutches, but mainly use a powerchair now. I'm having a hard time figuring out what would be right for me. Thanks again.
Osage orange is a very flexible a very dense and a very hard hardwood perfect for a traditional English quarter staff. I used black locust for mine. It’s not that flexible, but it’s so strong that it won’t break easily. Some of us want to break jaws with our defense weapons because we don’t have the skill to not die when they survive a blow, so extra mass is appreciated.
Thanks for the lesson I enjoyed it. PS you make awesome videos
Hello, do you ever put any kind of oil or wax on your bo staff to protect it? If you were to sand the entire shaft smooth, would that weaken the shaft at all or is the rattan a homogeneous material? Thank you.
hi i joust started watching i allways liked the bo staff but i did not know how to use one that well but by watching your videos i will get better
Me and my cousin were wondering which plant is strong and flexible for a Bo staff, then when I watched this video I immediately told my cousin that you have a video that is talking about the plant that we were wondering thanks for the video:)
Thnx for these videos - I have watched all of them and I am learning so much!
Love your tutorials as a new comer to martial arts.(thinking of training online) I have a great running tutorial idea for you Jake Mace. How about a short term sponsored training regime on a 34yr old Australian male with no martial arts fighting skills what-so-ever. Stream the progression from day one?
Step 1: find a big, straight stick without rot on it
Step 2: Scrape off the bark and branches (if any are present)
Step 3: thin it down if needed.
Anytime , you inspire me , take care
I enjoy your teaching. The rattan is nice for flexibility. Have you ever tried wax wood? it's very flexible. I make staffs from bamboo. Although it will splinter there is an abundance of it in Florida. Also the nodes on one I have resembles a face, much like the shadow knife. Also if you wrap the staff in duct, gaff, etc. tape before cutting, it won't splinter. Then simply peel the tape. Thanks for your lessons.
the shortest ring interval is the oldest part and the strongest part of that pole
Love it! As usual. I would buy a Lettuce Eat Plants shirt but it'll be $60+ to get it to Canada Jake!
Thanks for the video
Can you carve stuff into it and just customise it to make it you own or would the wood break?
Hi jake the collapsible bo staff is cool but it is a shame because I live in the uk and I would have bought it
It is, generically speaking, a bō, not a "staff staff" and the collapsible/2-piece ones are garbage or for "baton twirlers".
Jake you should try making your wooden weapons out of Dalbergia glomerata, also known as Granadillo rojo, abundant in Mexico. Since you live in Arizona it should be really easy to get.
very good
Thnx for the lesson , some guy keeps telling me on here not to do your moves it will kill me lol he did it two times
Yeah, sorry about that. There are some mad comment trolls sometimes. Just ignore them! ;) Thanks for your comments as usual Denise! ;)
Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace BOSS can u use bamboo for bo staff?please answer me PLEASE

You're just divine As I learned to fall out with the bo staff So I fell and I hit to the elbow Mom told me to not give up But when I looked at you I got a taste practicing tai-chi away My family supports me all the time, that is up to mother She thinks she can not stand it, yet I practice tai-chi half year And I think I'm learning a dvd with tai chi I work in the countryside, but now the ice everywhere, so if I wanted to practice, so I probably falling all the time, but now I work at home I want to ask my grandmother also wants to practice tai-chi But it hurts her joints and catches cramps, could still practicing tai-chi, because when I read the book so there was written: '' tai-chi is good for loosening joints ,, Is it true? After all, I let advice from a professional You are great :)
Well done jay
What a salesman. good video. bought one.
Hellow brother
I love your teaching
I wanna tell you that In India the length of staff is always and should be between your shoulder and ear...... For the best bo
Actually, historically a bo staff is supposed to be cut even with your eyebrow. Now there were other sized staffs shorter and even longer. It's said that the Monkey King had a magical staff that could be any size he wanted. He would make it the size of a toothpick and keep it tucked behind his ear. Then when he got into a fight he would extend it to about 7 feet long.
hey bro you are amazing keep it up
Here's a measuring tip... stretch out your arms and the distance from the tip of your middle finger to tip of your other middle finger is almost perfectly your height.
Jake stands there with his bo
Me: whow...I planned on getting one from your site, but if it arrives that thick...how the hell am I supposed to make that thin?
*Jake starts unwrapping it
Me: "....."
How do you clean it if it gets muddy, bloody, or dirty?
ALL OF UR VIDEOS ARE GREAT AND AWESOME I AM ALSO A BIG BIG BIG FAN OF YOURS VERY BIG LOL
Hi Jake I want to get into this staff training but I was curious about one thing. How come I see a lot of shaolin monks training and their staffs are roughly 6 inches to a foot taller than them? Is that a completely different style? Just wondered your thoughts on this
That is more a quarter staff. The Okinawan used a middle staff. The Japanese also adopted the Okinawan length but had the halberd and such for longer ranges.
Good advise !
Nice video, excuse me somebody can tell me where buy a rattan bo staff please
Thank you!
hey i would like to buy one because in geting into fighting with a staff but dont know were you can ship it to ? can you ship it to australia wa ?
Love the bo staff. I had ordered it and it is amazing
I like your videos. Wondering what the plant behind you next to the kale is?
Hi getting in touch for Ireland looking online different types gust wonder where you order from it would be greatly appreciate right now using the handle of a rack thanks
Hey Jake, might you please send me a comment, how thick a staff should be for a proper grip? Should the middle finger reach the palm? Thank you!
hey jake, am i able to ship one of these amazing bo staffs to australia. im not sure if its illegal or not. cheers :)
And there it is :D Bo staff comeback ;)
Hi there Jake. Im George and i live in Greece. I really have a hard time finding an original rattan . I would like to know if i order one from you how much would it cost plus the shipping. Thank you
Just confirming that the diameter doesn't matter so much between the sides after cutting? I wanna cut it based on the edge I like the best, but it may not be in preparation for the 'straightest' staff....is that ok? Thank you!!!
Thank you
Do they make rattan walking canes for defense, or would you advise a different wood for that?
I bout your rattan bo staf a few weeks ago and it still hasn't come in. How do I track it's shipping?
Every one get impressed by Jake. and I survived a fight with ur techniques
Thanks!
How much does the ratan 7.5 staff weigh? Or how much does it weigh cut as a 6ft staff if you know? Thanks!
सर मैं आपके वीडियो से बहुत कुछ सिख लिया हूँ धन्यावाद..
Jake, Is it mace part of the marcial arts? What kind of mace is best
Hi Jake - I mean I saw it - ( around klipklap-metall-staff ) maybe only by showing handsized difference or announce next week will come new ones "near in year - long back in numbers of videos" (not that long like to see from telegraph to youtube )
smart time good rest !
how to cure scratches and small holes in my staff and to prevent them in the future?
hii...jake sir....plzz make video...on..how to diffence against master lock....
good sir god blessyou and your family
Just ordered my staff from your website I am 50 been wanting to do this my whole life
They are actually called "baston". Escrima is another style of FMA, very similiar to Kali. There are actually 3 main ones....but calling it an "escrima stick" is like calling your staff "gungfu staff" instead of a "gùn". I know you probably realize that is the pinyin for the weapon, but for those that don't know a Chinese staff is called a "gùn".
I actually took the end that was sent to me and the end that I cut off and turned them into nunchaku, it would've been a shame to waste two perfectly good pieces of rattan!
People in Australia need to be aware that nunchaku and flails are illegal. According to the Australian Police' list of illegal weapons.
From memory "two pieces of any material joined by rope, chain or any material".
Great idea otherwise.
Hmm.... I have a solid oak bo staff and it's been struck a few times and it's still strong. Yes it will snap when it fails, but it didn't snap as soon as it was hit.
How does the rattan compare weight wise w/ oak? I’m ‘guessing’ it’s lighter, less dense. Guessing the 1.25” rattan is lighter the 1” oak. Is that correct?
nice very very very very very thanks
so if I wanted to start learning about Kung Fu and the teachings where would a good place to start
I just watched a 13 min. ad
question is peeled off rattan bo staff or nature bo staff with the skin?
Nice vid
What is the dimension of the bo stick
The bo staff is my favorite weapon
Hey Jake!
I am right now drying out my Bamboo-Bo-Staff. You said that rattan is the most suitable material, but do you think bamboo is suitable too for combat?
What do you think of synthetic materials. I am making a staff (cane) out of a 4 ft length of G9 composite. It has good heft and I am putting a "T" handle on it and painting it black to disguise it as a walking staff. G9 is stronger than steel and requires special techniques to machine it. A 3' long 1" dia. G9 rod will support about a ton of weight applied to its center and yet it's a little bit heavier that a 1 1/4" oak staff. Cutting it requires a diamond hacksaw blade or several standard blades that's how tough it is. It will not break when hit with a sledge hammer. On the down side my rod cost almost $30. I can fake the need for a cane but commercial canes aren't worth sh!t against a piece of pipe or a baseball bat. The trick is to get it past the courts as an improvised weapon which is why I'm doing my best to camouflage it.
I might buy a ratan bo staff, the only reason I love the bo staff is because Donatello from tmnt, watched all the 1990's movies and cartoons, Donnie is my all time favorite turtle and he's so cool with the staff!!
Good video
can you do videos about a short staff?
Hi Jake just wondering what you think about white wax ?
Do a Shaolin trident video I'm begging you
