I bought my bo staff from you 2ish years ago and had gotten it to give me a fun way to do some cardio to shed some of the tremendous weight ive packed on over the last 5 years. Since it came in the mail it spent the last 2 years behind my man cave door because i adopted two newborn babies since it came and have spent 25 hours a day nurturing them. Now that my daughter is 2 and her brother is 1 it has become time to make some progressive moves. I just cut it to my height and started with a number 1 spin. After about 5 minutes i had the motion down enough to increase my speed and can say WOW what a workout getting to 100 rotations is and i physically fee like my internal energy has a big fat smile. Thanks for your videos and your website. Love it all!

Osage orange is a very flexible a very dense and a very hard hardwood perfect for a traditional English quarter staff. I used black locust for mine. It’s not that flexible, but it’s so strong that it won’t break easily. Some of us want to break jaws with our defense weapons because we don’t have the skill to not die when they survive a blow, so extra mass is appreciated.

I enjoy your teaching. The rattan is nice for flexibility. Have you ever tried wax wood? it's very flexible. I make staffs from bamboo. Although it will splinter there is an abundance of it in Florida. Also the nodes on one I have resembles a face, much like the shadow knife. Also if you wrap the staff in duct, gaff, etc. tape before cutting, it won't splinter. Then simply peel the tape. Thanks for your lessons.

Actually, historically a bo staff is supposed to be cut even with your eyebrow. Now there were other sized staffs shorter and even longer. It's said that the Monkey King had a magical staff that could be any size he wanted. He would make it the size of a toothpick and keep it tucked behind his ear. Then when he got into a fight he would extend it to about 7 feet long.

They are actually called "baston". Escrima is another style of FMA, very similiar to Kali. There are actually 3 main ones....but calling it an "escrima stick" is like calling your staff "gungfu staff" instead of a "gùn". I know you probably realize that is the pinyin for the weapon, but for those that don't know a Chinese staff is called a "gùn".

I actually took the end that was sent to me and the end that I cut off and turned them into nunchaku, it would've been a shame to waste two perfectly good pieces of rattan!

People in Australia need to be aware that nunchaku and flails are illegal. According to the Australian Police' list of illegal weapons.
From memory "two pieces of any material joined by rope, chain or any material".
      Great idea otherwise.

Hmm.... I have a solid oak bo staff and it's been struck a few times and it's still strong. Yes it will snap when it fails, but it didn't snap as soon as it was hit.

  • @wanderingquestions7501

How does the rattan compare weight wise w/ oak? I’m ‘guessing’ it’s lighter, less dense. Guessing the 1.25” rattan is lighter the 1” oak. Is that correct?

What do you think of synthetic materials. I am making a staff (cane) out of a 4 ft length of G9 composite. It has good heft and I am putting a "T" handle on it and painting it black to disguise it as a walking staff. G9 is stronger than steel and requires special techniques to machine it. A 3' long 1" dia. G9 rod will support about a ton of weight applied to its center and yet it's a little bit heavier that a 1 1/4" oak staff. Cutting it requires a diamond hacksaw blade or several standard blades that's how tough it is. It will not break when hit with a sledge hammer. On the down side my rod cost almost $30. I can fake the need for a cane but commercial canes aren't worth sh!t against a piece of pipe or a baseball bat. The trick is to get it past the courts as an improvised weapon which is why I'm doing my best to camouflage it.

I might buy a ratan bo staff, the only reason I love the bo staff is because Donatello from tmnt, watched all the 1990's movies and cartoons, Donnie is my all time favorite turtle and he's so cool with the staff!!
