According to extended lore, Q's reaction wasn't due to any fear on the part of the continuum to the Borg, they could destroy them all with a finger snap after all. It was due to the fact that Q got in big trouble with the continuum for sending the Enterprise to Borg space and alerting the Borg to humanities presence before they were ready. In response the continuum created a directive ordering all Q to leave the Borg alone. So, Q was basically trying to save himself from getting into more trouble.
That was my understanding just from watching this the first time, more or less. Q already “provoked” the Borg once before, and he didn’t seem too concerned about them back then.
I'm a little confused. Didn't Enterprise show that the Borg learned of humanity from one group of Borg that had time travelled back in First Contact and crash landed and was frozen in Antarctica? It was when they were defrosted by the scientists studying them and before they could be stopped by Archer that they sent a signal out in to space to alert the collective of their position? They even mentioned at the end that it would take something like 200 years for that signal to reach its destination. Though looking in to it in more detail and looking back at things chronologically, I guess this episode was made before that Enterprise retcon, so makes sense.
They could destroy with a finger snap, but they can't. That is too much direct 'interaction'.. and Q is already in enough trouble - according to lore - he folded time and space to stop another Q being hit with an asteroid - it hit earth, and his 'penance' was to watch over the planet?

I think he was worried that a younger inexperienced q might not be able to get away from them. And if the borg assimilated a q they would be a universal threat
This just emphasises something I've wondered about the Q. Firstly are they truly all that? I mean, there are over 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe alone and one of the Q focuses on humanity among all the other species in the universe and is concerned about the actions of another species in the same galaxy? I wonder if the Q are limited to our galaxy, the galactic barrier containing them (something similar is in the novels).
One of the one hand, she was probably happy she didn't have to wear the suit for a change. On the other, she hated the Trek showrunner for trying to sexualise her character in the initial season she was introduced.
I could be viewed as that the Q is not actually scared of the Borg, but actually understand that messing with the Borg could cause a lot of problems to other species in the galaxy and they want to prevent that if they can.
Been a millennium since I seen this episode/scene, never noticed how the arched brows when he says "Don't provoke the Borg". Classic. So nice to see him back in Picard Season 2. Maybe the "Son", well, actually he is the son, will be in Strange New World or Discovery?? One can only hope.
The Borg were already aware of the Federation remember in TNG Season 1 Final they had attacked Federation and Romulan planets along the Neutral Zone and in Enterprise episode Regeneration the Borg sent a message to the Borg in Delta Quadrant but it would take over 100 years to reach and that’s probably how the Borg knew about the Federation also the Federation did know the Borg existed or suspected they did because 7 parents went looking for them
That was a warning, and it worked. That said, they know the Borg are powerful, so they keep their distance. If they even started to intrude into other realms, then they would be incredibly dangerous.
I think the real issue is that the Q know it is only the vast gulf between them and the Borg that keeps them safe from the Borg. A young and inexperienced Q would be the perfect stepping stone for the Borg to bridge a gap like that. It’s not that the Q is afraid of the Borg themselves, but that they know the Borg would instantly take advantage of overconfidence and carelessness.
I don't think Q is worried about the Borg "defeating" his son. That's impossible. His son would wish the Borg out of existence if he wanted to, and they have no means of possible harming him. What he's worried about is his son being punished, as he was, for messing around and causing the Borg to spread beyond projections or schedules (and it's clear from the conversation Q has with Quinan that there are expected schedules for these things).
@ettrooper5922 Yup. Q made numerous statements to the effect that the Federation (or more specifically humans) were spreading "faster than expected" and/or "faster than they should be". The Q have a timetable that they are attempting to keep the universe to.
I don't know, I'd be pretty embarrassed if I were treated the way she was by the show. They had one of the most interesting characters in Trek and she was relegated to wank material.
If even the q would rather give the borg a wide birth. That makes the borg even more scary. Imagine what an assimilated q or a borg with q powers could do.
a part of me believe the borg would end up killing themselves by accident because of how much they messed up time. But then I'm no expert on this stuff
The Q are far beyond the Borg collective they don’t even live in the same dimensions that the Borg do and one single Q would easily wipe out the Borg without breaking a sweat
If the Borg assimilated Q, they would be exactly like Q. Q is what existence is after one experiences pretty much everything there is. They would probably just leave everyone alone for the most part. They've always only interacted with you if you were a threat or have something they want. They would no longer need to assimilate anybody because nobody could add any biological or technological advancement. They would simply just be bored and with nothing left to do contemplate suicide.
well the reason is that she takes it like an adult and acts like one. Not like us millenial snowflakes that take everything as "offensive" and "sexist" or "discriminating", crying for "changes" and ruining everything for political correctness just because some of us get "uncomfortable". One thing we have to learn that there is no shame in "eye candy". Why the hell not? Createing problems where none are is a thing we really have to stop doing. Unbelievable that people from 20-30 years ago were more mature and developed than we are today... Besides, she wasn't "reduced" to pure eye candy, she still was a strong and intelligent character in the show playing a huge part in it and she kind of inspired me to the person I am today.
@@LakituKoopa I am one of those people from 20-30 years ago. The world is still transitioning from a sexist place. But 20-30 years ago we were also more conditioned to accept it and know our place. But the main thing I dislike is all the sexual innuendo written in around her character. It's not Trek.
@@jaxr2958 I think you take it way too seriously. Yes, there was sexism but it was not that bad in the 90s as modern feminism tries to describe. You can actually thank them that instead of representing the rights of women they actually lower them by claiming 24/7 that men are "evil", "pigs" and "only rapists" with one thing in mind and that women are victims all the time and need to be put in cotton. From a public perception, women those days traded their strength, individuality and rights for a victim role just to fight for the things that were taken away by modern feminism. A fight for returning to status quo at best. Don't get me wrong, it is critical to fight against sexism and problems that concerns women but we can't look for problems where none exist or else it will hurt us more than actual help. As a girl myself I think we exagerated with the whole "sexism" thing. Besides, it was explained by the Doctor why Seven doesn't wear a standard uniform: Since she was Ex-Borg and turned back to human, this costume monitored her vitals and kept a balance between her regained human body and the remaining borg implants. And I think the writers kind of did a good job since you could see through the seasons how she developed and regained humanity instead putting her in some sort of romance scenario (just at the end of s7 she started dating). The same goes for Janeway, instead of making her some love interest she remained a badass captain to the end.

my headcanon: in a lot of alternate timelines, the borg work out how to assimilate a Q, and it took a lot of work by the continuum to clean up the timelines after that.
I would’ve loved to have seen Q jr make an appearance in the Picard series when Icheb was murdered. It would’ve been nice to see a bit of Continuum-level anger about that, seeing as how the 2 of them actually became friends. Not sure how to have worked it in, but, it would’ve been nice to see the call back. Maybe in season 2 when Q was featured; just have Q Jr pop in for a second for a scene and then as he is about to snap away, he turns and gives a legit condolence to Seven about their mutual friend.

Yes he did and perhaps because of those events and how much the Borg can Adapt and learn. A Rule was made for the Q continuum to not interact with the Borg. Hense to prevent the Q to be learned enough to find there Realm or worse learn to Assimilate a Non Organic being like the Q.
What if the wormhole linked the Delta with the Alpha? Imagine Voyager getting lost in the Gamma. Janeway vs the Founders. It would be a real test of wills. Plus Sisko deserved a chance to avenge the death of his wife. The Borg did that. I would also like to see Quark try to scam Neelix.

Why I liked how Q would pick up on moments and HOW I love they adapted him to Mr. Mtzlspytlk for superman.
Yeah that’s the thing I’m a little disappointed about. Considering what ends up happening to Q one would think his son would be there with him for it all.

I always found the statement: Don't provoke the Borg! highly ambiguous. Of course it could imply that the Borg are dangerous, even for the Q Continuum. But there is also another simple answer: When turning back time or erasing memories or undoing stuff it's enough work to do that to one crew, planet etc. But since the Borg share a collective Mind it means they have to modify the whole collective which is much more work. Maybe it's not fear but annoyance!

4:01 when q looked at Janeway he looked so pissed. You don't mess with the godmother 😂 guess his son crossed the line when it comes to his Kathy 😏
I think he was also mad that he was giving the borg more data to analyze about the q
@@lukez9721 if the anger Q expressed (and warning) was any clearer, I'd say he looked close to giving his son a thrashing twice as bad as Janeway's XD
@@lukez9721 They can analyze all they want, the Q are inter dimensional beings. They couldn't adapt to 8472 and they'll never adapt to the Q. Let them analyze the Q for eternity. It would be worthwhile because they'd just be wasting time they'd have otherwise spent assimilating other races.
Q was uncharacteristically angry when his son summoned a Borg vessel, I mean the Borg are horrifying enough without them having omnipotent power!
Just imagine if the Borg were able to analyse the energy that transferred them...
I think he was worried that a younger inexperienced q might not be able to get away from them. And if the borg assimilated a q they would be a universal threat
It's probably more like annoying a dog thats behind a gate, you're not in danger but someone then has to deal with It's barking
@@develynseether4426 or perhaps their realm IS the barrier, or something similar but i do not believe they are limited to our single galaxy
"Make it yourself"
Voyager will always have a special place in my heart. Must've watched it a dozen times. Sometimes back to back.
I respect how Jeri handled this. She's got some guts to do this.
Too bad we couldn't get a peek.
@@michael.barlow It's not HBO.🤣
She hated that catsuit so much, she was probably relieved that she could have a scene where she wasn't wearing it.
i'm pretty sure jeri wasnt naked except for her back,
One of the one hand, she was probably happy she didn't have to wear the suit for a change.
On the other, she hated the Trek showrunner for trying to sexualise her character in the initial season she was introduced.
Q Face when he is angry is so amazing
He made the same face when he played an Elder on Charmed 😂
😠DONT 🫨PRO🤬VOKE😦 THE😒 BORG😡
His inner Discord from ‘My Little Pony’ is showing.
Janeway: Coffee black
Computer: Make it yourself
I could be viewed as that the Q is not actually scared of the Borg, but actually understand that messing with the Borg could cause a lot of problems to other species in the galaxy and they want to prevent that if they can.
This shows that even Q has some compassion for mortals
Janeway: Coffee, Black.
Food Replicator: Make it yourself.
Owen de Lancie, who is now 34 and played Q2 is John de Lancie's real son!
That role was actually played by Owen's brother _Keegan._
I swear, John De Lancie is such a terrific actor, perfect for Q.
JDL is awesome, and his son did a great job portraying his character. Kinda reminded me how well Jack Gleason played Joffrey.
I wonder how hard it was for Jerry Ryan not to laugh in the scenes with Q Jr.
“Don’t provoke the Borg” he said, calmly.
"Don't provoke the borg!" Says the guy who flung the Enterprise into the path of borg cube years before...
To help the federation to give them a head start as they didn’t know what they was up against
That's why the rule exists. Q was punished for that, since it set in motion a chain of events that almost led to the Federation being destroyed.
I loved the attitude given to the ship's computer. And with Majelle saying it even more classic IMO.
The Borg have shown they cannot assimilate all organic beings so how would they assimilate a Q which would be made of energy?
@@seraphinaaizen6278 Schedules?!? Oh, dear...
@ettrooper5922 Yup.
Q made numerous statements to the effect that the Federation (or more specifically humans) were spreading "faster than expected" and/or "faster than they should be". The Q have a timetable that they are attempting to keep the universe to.
Q Junior provoking the Borg was indeed unacceptable
Jeri Ryan has absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about!
I don't know, I'd be pretty embarrassed if I were treated the way she was by the show. They had one of the most interesting characters in Trek and she was relegated to wank material.
@@mechanomics2649 what was so interesting about her though, besides her body? Borg are boring.
@@tilasole3252 that’s such a ridiculous statement
7 of 9 was a much needed addition to the show
@@brizzle3903 explain
@@tilasole3252 no, you explain.
it is a shame John DeLancei's son didn't stick with acting for long. He's really good at it.
I guess the 🍎 really Doesn't fall
far from the tree.
Especially a Rotten 🍎.
I wonder what the Borg were thinking, probably: "What kind of technology does Voyager have? We need it"
Q: Don't provoke the Borg! That's my job.
Gotta love neelix. Dude brewed up coffee for everyone when the computer refused to. Dude is boosting morale wherever he goes.
2:54 - Nellie is left literally mouthless, many, MANY ST:VOY fans across North America rejoiced at the Bar Rodent being left literally speechless.
this is when Q takes q to a planet and makes his power dependant on a mirror.
One of my favourite Voyager episode LOVE THE Q and now a young Q
"coffee black"
Computer-"make it yourself" lol
1:02 Janeways little wtf moment😂😂😂😂
It's amazing Jeri doesn't hate Trek after her brilliant character was so often reduced to eye candy.
well the reason is that she takes it like an adult and acts like one.
Also while many of us women cringed at the giant condom and heels Jeri was given as a costume instead of the standard uniform, we had no collective voice b4 the net.
@@LakituKoopa OMG, did you tell me I take it too serious, then write that horribly misogynistic long winded essay.
@@jaxr2958 calm down, no need to freak out. Just spoke out my mind on that topic. Ok, if you think my thoughts are misogynistic, it is ok. I respect your opinion. I don't agree with you but I respect that. Can you at least explain what makes you think that they are "misogynistic"?
Q and Q Junior are actually father and son in real life. 😂
Holy shit I didn't think q could change his tone.
Q aren't AFRAID of the borg. They just don't like to clean up after accidental summoning.
4:16
'Don't Provoke the Borg' I wonder how many times Q Junior has done that because man he is acting like a spoiled brat endangering the crew of Voyager like that because I hate to think what would have happened to Janeway and the others if Q hadn't intervened.
“If the continued told you once, then it told you a thousand times”
I’m going to keep that cold line in my memory bank for future use
"Don't provoke the borg!" - Says the dude that hurled the Enterprise into the Delta Quadrant and did just that lol.
His face though, that's my favorite Q reaction lol.
4:10 Considering what he's capable of, seeing a look like that on Q's face is terrifying.
Imagine, how HARD it had to be for him.... assuming, they had it together which, judging by cut, was doubtful.
my headcanon: in a lot of alternate timelines, the borg work out how to assimilate a Q, and it took a lot of work by the continuum to clean up the timelines after that.
You could count on a Q episode, whichever series he popped up in, being a GOOD episode. Kudos to John de Lancie.
He had a lot to learn.
Luwaxana Troi is running the replicator!
Q taking away Neelix's ability to talk is probably the only benevolent thing he's ever done.
"If the Continuum's told you once, they've told you a thousand times, DON'T PROVOKE THE BORG"
They should have used Keegan De Lancie as the actor to be Jack Crusher's Q. As the same Q he plays here. Son to son.
Unfortunately he long ago left the acting business and actually works in the state department.
The best part is that Keegan de Lancie, John de Lancie's real son plays the teenage Q.
I still want to know where this little shit was when Icheb was being dissected!
That kid a monster who parent failed him, lucky John Lancie doesn't have to put up with him in real life
There a 120% chance none of you saw past the sarcasm
That “kid” is a sadistic sociopath
And a psychopath
Wish this would've gone a step further with many Borg beaming in and assimilating the crew before Q stepped in. The crew doesn't even look concerned that drones beamed in. Janeway seems nonchalant about it...
It happened too fast for them to react.
It was another Tuesday for them.
All the Dislikes were Assimilated by the Borg

You should be nice to your replicator your replicator is a person too!!!
Q introduced human to the Borg...
Yes he did and perhaps because of those events and how much the Borg can Adapt and learn. A Rule was made for the Q continuum to not interact with the Borg. Hense to prevent the Q to be learned enough to find there Realm or worse learn to Assimilate a Non Organic being like the Q.
“Aunt Kathy” I love it
It’s crazy how that’s John DeLancie’s actual son.
7 of 9 is pure 🔥 she can assimilate me any day of the week 😂
What if the wormhole linked the Delta with the Alpha? Imagine Voyager getting lost in the Gamma. Janeway vs the Founders. It would be a real test of wills. Plus Sisko deserved a chance to avenge the death of his wife. The Borg did that. I would also like to see Quark try to scam Neelix.
Fact I love about this SHOWS canon knowledge AND respect to life, why I feel the Gas gods and other forms WERE like that of Q or even Q WAS that prior before they witnessed space Federation trekkers and watched their lives AS us, as just audiences and fans or even critics. Why I liked how Q would pick up on moments and HOW I love they adapted him to Mr. Mtzlspytlk for superman.
At 1:12, why is he pouring the coffee in such small amount like whisky?
Coffee is just a code word.
4:22 Oh......he won't do it again because he's leaving. NOW!
The ACTUAL BORG assisted me in my dreams last night. Even more proof that they exist.
Where do you think these stories come from? “Inspiration” is just another word for “remembering something forgotten” 😅
Nelix poured enough coffee to fill a tea spoon.
No coincidences in life if you ask me, if you can read between the lines!!!!
I remember this part
This is one of my favorite episodes
Could you imagine if the Q were assimilated? Bye all galaxies 😮
It's a shame Q's son never made it in Star Trek Picard.
that would be cool if johns son is in star trek picard with him.
Yeah that’s the thing I’m a little disappointed about. Considering what ends up happening to Q one would think his son would be there with him for it all.
After all this time, I listened to this with my headphones on and realized he's mocking Janeway in Sickbay. I thought it was, "I've got a surprise for you, Captain," but Qunior is doing a sort of a portmanteau of Captain and Kathryn, if that's the right terminology. "I've got a surprise for you, Kathyn."
Q jr is a monster! How dare him cover Seven of Nine before the pan out shot! 🤣
So wait. The Borg is the only thing the continuum fears?
What father is adorable, scary and somewhat handsome... his son is ..... sexy but totally a jerk, poor captain janeway all he had to endure
I'd like to see a no holds bared contest between Q's son and TOS's Charlie X.
I always found the statement: Don't provoke the Borg! highly ambiguous.
Of course it could imply that the Borg are dangerous, even for the Q Continuum.
But there is also another simple answer:
When turning back time or erasing memories or undoing stuff it's enough work to do that to one crew, planet etc. But since the Borg share a collective Mind it means they have to modify the whole collective which is much more work.
Maybe it's not fear but annoyance!
Ooohhh
I couldn't watch Voyager....
But... Q, MRS Q AND Q JR?
