      That didn't stop Rolex from making the hand-wound Daytona until 1988. The hand-wound Oyster Precision models were also made until the 1980s. My guess is that the amount of use that the stem tube and crown threading got as to show excessive wear and thus warrant discontinuing the hand-cranking + screw-down crown combination.

  • @Gr33nMachine83
    @Gr33nMachine83 Před 4 měsíci +17

    Agree with the srew down crown longevity. But the issue is removing the rotor on an automatic watch. The bridle at the end of the mainspring on a manual wind watch grabs the inside of the barrel wall creating more amplitude/power resulting in better accuracy in all positions. This is not a problem on a traditional auto as it winds as you wear it keeping the amplitude high. In this case you would have to constantly wind the watch while on your wrist to keep the amplitude high as the mainspring is designed to slip. But hey we dont wear mechanical watches for their accuracy so whatever lol 🤣

      @tkindschi Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think the basic issue is that Miyota doesn't make a pure mechanical, (non-automatic) movement? (Not that I could find, anyway). So if the goal was to use a modern, relatively low cost, high beat movement....and keep the hand-winding aesthetic of an old school military field watch, a modified Miyota 9000 series movement immediately comes to mind as your best option. I respect him and his fair opinions. I'll also preface my comments on the watch itself by noting I am generally not a huge field watch fan, although I know they have their promoters and serve a purpose for many. But overall this initial design a miss. Very plain face with not a lot of visual appeal. Lume is weak. Do we really need WR100 on the face? I’ve seen and heard a lot of dislike for the screw down crown on a manual. I get the idea… as a field watch, using a field watch as it is meant, you’ll be crawling in mud, climbing rocks, crossing rivers and having a screw down crown is helpful to preserve the movement. So I don’t mind the screw down crown at all.
    The lume wasn’t great and hopefully will improve.
    But my biggest complaint about this watch (just me) is that it just tells the time and I like something that has a date, maybe a day-date… as many things as you can put in there.
    And the price… for $150usd you can get an Orient Mako 2.
    Sorry MWC.

      The Vostok is an argument *_against_* this watch's manual wind with screw-down crown: the Vostok's movement was specifically designed with an extra clutch - causing its unique characteristic "wobble" - to protect its keyless works from damage that manual winding is more prone to causing in an already-complex stem that supports being screwed down.

    I'm kinda surprised at them removing the auto winder and then going with a screw down crown like you said. With all my screw down crown watches when they are not in daily rotation they are stored with the crown unscrewed so I can wind them up when wearing them or just giving them a bit of a run. I do that so it reduces the wear on the barrel threads.

I think the 100m WR could have been smaller and I’m not a fine of the name/logo (not sure smaller could have helped there but perhaps a clean dial and a nicely etched caseback would have helped me).

    It could be a misconception but manual winding mechanism are not as strong on automatic movement, and when you manually wind an automatic the power is transfered to the main spring throught the automatic gear train of the automatic winding too.
    With a automatic it is no a problem because you don't use the manual winding on a daily basis, I usually even never use it on my automatic, the seiko magic lever is far good enougth on my Seiko and Orient. And a screw crown is not use daily too on an automatic except to put the time and date, if a wear the watch I will unscrew it 2 or 3 times a mouth max. So if you wear this watch often like a daily watch the screw down crown and winding gear will wear a lot. But for a occasional watch it could works, but I prefer a Seiko 5 field the old one.
    On my manual winding watch I am happy to be able to wind them directly without a screw crown.
