    There used to be a branch off the Penistone Line from Shepley to Clayton West that somehow survived the Beeching cuts and saw passenger services to Huddersfield into the eighties. However, with the closing of the coal mine at Clayton West the cost of maintaining the line could not be justified and it was closed. The line passed through a tunnel close to my old secondary school, Shelley High. There is now a narrow gauge line, the Kirklees Light Railway, that runs along the old route including through the tunnel which is worth a trip.

    I traveled this line every workday for 7yrs in the 1980s- Brockholes to Sheffield. I recall many a snowy morning, standing on the platform in Brockholes around 6:30 AM, only for the train not to show up! Midland Station has had a make-over and I like that the trains now have usb plugs and free wi-fi, but it's nice to see the view from the carriage window hasn't really changed a lot! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🙂

    I'm never sure that 2 x 3 seating actually works! People who don't know each other tend not to want to be too cosy, while few prefer to join those that do! What do others think?

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 Před rokem +4

      I agree, I suspect that the 2+3 arrangement is to meet some DfT KPI rather than any consideration for customer satisfaction. I also suspect that, apart from maybe a one hour peak loading window, many middle seats are unoccupied - even when loads are high people seem to think these seats are for bags rather than customers 🤣. It would seem, to me , that it would be better to go with 2+2 or if 2+3 has to be retained space the seats to give more legroom.

    • @stephenlaarkamp7344
      @stephenlaarkamp7344 Před rokem +3

      Being from the U.S. where 2x3 seating is pretty normal for commuter and regional trains, it's always surprising to see how narrow they can be in Britain. It's no doubt because U.S. trains have a wider loading gauge, so there is a lot more room on the inside to work with, so it works a bit better here. Even then, more newer commuter trains here are going to 2x2 with double-deckers, so the issue does remain, just to a lesser degree than the UK.

The trains are well used, despite the roundabout route, and there appear to be hardly any bus alternatives: surely an opportunity there for one of our enterprising, innovative and - er - passenger-friendly privatised bus companies ...

    Didn't realize the 3 car 150s were created the same way as the 158s on the much maligned Portsmouth-Cardiff route that I used very often in the 2010s. Two car sets anywhere can create capacity issues (Nottingham-Leeds being a particular example) and many smaller stations can't cope with anything longer but we need to ensure passengers can have some comfort.

    I pity anyone doing this commute on a daily basis. Until the 1980s the line took the much shorter former Great Central Railway route. The track was singled in 1989, meaning no direct trains and only a couple of passing loops. It's pretty enough on a nice day, but 1hr 16mins is madness for an essential bit of northern railway infrastructure. They need to double track it, asap, it was quicker in Victorian times.

    Love the video, but given the name of the line, I can’t get myself to push Like, as the video currently stands at 69. Peak maturity 😶

    My god that’s the worst leg room I’ve seen on a train! I was surprised to see a toilet in what looks like an old commuter train. Even with the weather the scenery looks nice.. once again the pice is astonishing nowhere in Aberdeenshire, Moray or Highlands do you find prices as low as that

    Halam is not pronounced like that.
    It is “Hal-am” Hal not Hay.

    Network Rail should still electrify the existing lines in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire so that electric and Bi-Mode trains can still operate on. And to electrify the East Lancashire Line to Burnley, Rochdale and Blackburn.

    the joke about the line's name is likely to be lost to those for whom English is a second language! Having 3 across seating is no fun, especially for the lucky person in the middle, made worse as there are no armrests.

    A lovely though hilariously indirect route. The 150s on the other hand... I'd honestly rather have a pair of Pacers!

      It used to be a more direct route. The Sheffield to Penistone section ran along a part of the old Woodhead Transpennine line. Only when that line was closed did the Huddersfield to Sheffield service run via Barnsley.
