  • A company that habitually flouts labor standards. That's "Black company" meaning in Japan. I introduce you the realty of working in Japan through my experience, facts by friend's, and some research.
But there're great companies too. I mean companies which believe employees and their voices are truly important.
So I'm sharing the bad ones.

Thanks for tackling such a difficult topic! I work in the video games industry and it's very similar in many ways - low pay vs tech jobs, 100 hour weeks during crunch, but ultimately I'm much more protected in the US for things like power harassment and job mobility. At the end of the day, it's as you said - it's important to ask yourself "Who am I?" and to know that your identity isn't your image of yourself but what you do on a daily basis.

The job I have now is good (fingers crossed 🤞), but I once worked for a place that didn’t give us any breaks.
When some of my coworkers complained about it, our boss said, “I can hire more people so you can have breaks, but you will make less money. Do you want that?”
Everyone said “no.” At the time, we’d rather work with no breaks and make more money. The only good thing about that job, is we got to eat for free. 😆😆

I worked in Singapore and am now working in Japan. I think the issue with Japan is also due to the language. If I hear 2-3 people talking, I can sort of know who is the sempai, kouhai, or are they friends, distant. So Japanese try to work hard to become the "sempai", and the "sempai" work hard because they need to show good image to their "kouhai". What do you think?

Cheers! Great Video, as always!:D Its unusual for a japanese dad, to be like that, congrantulations:D! Im from germany, our work and life balance is pretty good, i guess, but of course in every country there are people which are unhappy about their work situation. Its not just Japan, but yeah! Japan is a bit known for the hard working conditions. But because of the unbelievable work ethic, Japan is absolutely beautiful. I guess its nice to live in Japan, if youre rich:D you dont have to work, and can enjoy the beauty of it. So, is a "salaryman" only the guys in suits working in the offices? Or is a garbagetruckdriver a salaryman? A scaffolder? A carpenter? Do they also work 12 hour days for no money? Curious about this!
I earn approx 425000 yen/month as a scaffolder, working 8 hours per day, 5 weeks vacation every year. Is that good by japanese standards?
Do you retire in Japan? At what age?

Thanks for watching! It really depends on which company you work for. I'm not sure but if you work as what you do now, I think it's better or similar situation in Japan. Important thing is what you want, I believe.
