Thank you very much for that video which answered so many questions I had in my mind about how to proceed my art business. It was especially helpful to get to know that I should not sell my art myself when I look out for a gallery representation. I am planning my website right now and try to choose the best plattform for doing that. Wether I need a good shop system or not is a important question. Your information saved me a lot of money and time. Your recommendation about pricing was also very valuable to me. I saved this video for a later re-watch!

Hi Martin I’m new to your channel but I’m enjoying the content.
One small issue I have is that you jump from one camera to another and I think another or you are taking a break and moving the camera position, this I find a bit distracting. Don’t know how others feel? Just a thought.

excellent hard to find advice. at this time my one question is as I put a portfolio of my prints together, what size should I use to show to the gallery? A4, A3 or even A2
David, if you are applying to a gallery, only a book or a PDF brochure. When you print and frame to show your work, go as big as you can within reason. Photographic art generally shows well as large artworks.
@MartinOsner thanks, I have my prints in a binder at A4 size as a print is usually better to visualize the image over on screen. Agree on the size for a show but wasn't sure as to what size to use for introducing my work, was thinking A4 would work but if A3 is better I could 5that. thanks again for your help and inspiration
Hi David, I would not go with photographs in a binder, rather have a book printed, there are many online publishing companies that will print a short run, even (one offs) for your. Blurb.com comes to mind, but there are many to choose from. The impression in my option if far more professional.
Hi Martin and Sam!!! I'm a 69 year old black photographer, living in the U.S.! I have visited a number of galleries around my area hoping to get my work into a gallery! In the 20 years of being serious about my photography no one feels my work is not worthy of being in a gallery! So I all but gave you on the idea! So I took the easy route, I joined a on-line gallery called Fine art America! I had my portrait on my page and could not sell a thing! I removed my portrait and now I'm making money! But not the kind of money I would make from a gallery! All I ask is can you tell me if my work is gallery worthy! Do a Google search of my name and my website will show up! Thanks for the encouraging video!

I visited you work on Fine Art America. Your photography showcases a diverse range of subjects and styles. You have a keen eye for capturing beautiful moments, and your bird artworks, like "Into the sunset," "A flight of terms," and "Rhapsody in blue," are indeed impressive.
However, I noticed that some of your work might be more pictorial and less emotive in delivering a clear artistic intent or point of view. Galleries often look for artwork that conveys a strong message or theme, allowing the audience to connect with the artist's vision.
Considering your selling prices on Fine Art America might also be affecting your chances in traditional galleries. Higher-priced artwork can sometimes be perceived as more valuable and exclusive. However, this doesn't mean you should undervalue your work. Finding the right balance is crucial.
I suggest taking the time to build a focused portfolio with a specific theme or message. This cohesive body of work will help galleries understand your artistic intent and potential as an artist. Remember to keep this portfolio exclusive to traditional galleries and not feature it on Fine Art America to maintain its exclusivity.
Don't be disheartened by past rejections; the art world can be challenging to navigate. Keep honing your craft, refining your artistic vision, and seeking opportunities to exhibit your work. Persistence and dedication are key to achieving success in the art world.

This is such great content, thank you so much! I was wondering, when approaching galleries, is it best to have a new portfolio to one that was exhibited previously in a smaller gallery, or to keep the same pieces and try to get that taken on?

By showcasing fresh and unseen pieces, you demonstrate your versatility as an artist and maintain the intrigue for potential visitors. On the other hand, if the galleries are located in different cities, states, or countries, then it's perfectly fine to try and build upon the exhibited collection. Art enthusiasts and collectors in different regions may not have had the opportunity to see your previous work, and showcasing a successful exhibition can also boost your credibility as an artist. Ultimately, it's essential to gauge the audience and consider how the work aligns with the particular gallery's aesthetic and clientele. Presenting a combination of new and previously exhibited pieces can be a good strategy to show your artistic development while retaining a sense of familiarity. Remember, every gallery and situation is unique, so staying flexible and adaptive in your approach will serve you well. The whole genre of "fine art photography" is just a cliche.
While I respect your perspective, I must respectfully disagree. The genre of "fine art photography" may indeed have certain recognizable elements, but I wouldn't dismiss it as just a cliché. Instead, I see it as a brilliant, awe-inspiring, thought-provoking, and artistically challenging cliché that holds immense value for many people who deeply connect with it. The reason fine art photography has endured and continues to captivate audiences is precisely because it embraces its clichés while transcending them through the artist's unique vision and creativity. Within this genre, photographers have the freedom to explore their emotions, perceptions, and ideas, expressing them in ways that leave a profound impact on viewers. In fact, the very notion of cliché is somewhat subjective. What might seem cliché to one person can evoke a whole range of emotions and interpretations in another. The beauty of fine art photography lies in its ability to elicit different responses from different individuals, sparking meaningful conversations and reflections. Moreover, the label of "cliché" doesn't invalidate the passion, dedication, and talent of the artists who pour their hearts into this medium. They constantly challenge themselves to push beyond the perceived boundaries, experimenting with new techniques, concepts, and perspectives to bring fresh life to familiar themes. Ultimately, fine art photography is an ever-evolving and deeply personal form of artistic expression that resonates with many people.
