I pushed it through mountain pass after mountain pass, through the clouds and chased a GT3RS through a completely empty Sustenpass. It was awesome. The advantages offered by upside down forks are not applicable during street riding. You are experiencing the placebo effect, if you think a traditional fork is not sufficiently stiff for a couple rides around town or on the highway. You need to be really pushing the envelope on the track for the difference to even become noticeable. For a street rider, a traditional fork is better because if the seals fail you don't lose all the oil, and they are easier to service since you can drain and refill them without taking them out of the bike. The reason most bikes come with USD forks today is because of the larp factor, the same reason they are coming out with winglets on street bikes too (They don't do anything except look cool)

Boss: Hey guys, can you make a cheaper MT09 ?
    Engineers: How cheap ?
Boss: Cheap enough to retain 2 cylinders, all else you can trow out the window and use the cheapest materials and parts we can get away with.

If you're coming from a bigger bike i can see why you didn't like it, since everything is very basic, but that's why it's so cheap. Just to chime in on the injury thing... I do Enduro MTB'ing, in January I had a heavy crash and smashed up ribs on my left side... I also contemplated whether I should give up on it, as it was 5 weeks of recovery, etc... I decided against it, did a few more Enduro events and rode a fair bit of gnarly trails in Cape Town... and then 4 weeks ago... I had another wild crash, fractured 2 ribs, tore my shoulder rotator cuff, and smashed up my thigh... needless to say, I'm now giving up on the Enduro MTB thing, as I'm sitting with 12+ weeks of recovery in 6 months, and getting hurt like this sux. So don't let anyone else tell you you did the wrong thing for quitting MX... your life and your body, do what suites your lifestyle and it's easy for people who haven't gone through the motions to comment on things like this, but at the end of the day you are the one that has to go through the entire healing process and inconvenience of being injured, being unable to function in day-to-day life. Instead of a well thought out chassis/suspension/brake setup which teaches riders to progressively increase their speed and ability whilst staying in the bikes comfort zone, Yamaha dumped a powerful, fun torquey engine into a bike with trash suspension, grabby brakes and a flexible frame which WILL lead to the bike being unstable when the rider inevitably wants to go faster.

As someone that bought that same gen MT07 for commuting, I can agree it is built to a price. The forks and brakes are particularly not sporty. It was designed to compete with the older SV650 and Ninja 650 bikes not bikes like the Street Triple or R6 for example. As with all the other comments here, I agree a Street Triple sounds like the right bike for you. The MT07 has a fun engine, is a good commuter and can wheelie well but if you've been spoilt by ANYTHING decent in the past then the it makes sense that the MT07 will disappoint. It's light weight, short wheel base and torquey engine is what made it a legend. When the MT07 released out back in 2014 it didn't have much competition, then the KTM Duke 790 came out, then every other manufacturer just kept coming out with better iterations of light-weight affordable naked bikes.

I bought a new MT-07 2nd gen back in 2018 and I’ve had it ever since, after coming from a 125cc it felt so fast and raw. The full Akra system makes it sound thunderous and gives it that personality I wanted.
It’s cheap to run, insure and tax so as a daily commuter bike it was perfect for me. It’s not too fast, not too slow and economical to run while still being a fun ride to work

Currently at 16,800 miles (27,036 kilometers) and now that I'm getting close to knee dragging and more advanced riding, I definitely realize how bad the suspension is. Don't get me wrong, as a beginner this is THE BEST BIKE you can buy off the showroom. It's plenty of power, sounds amazing, is relatively affordable, and it looks good too. Just know that you'll probably grow out of it after a couple years or want a bike more capable in the corners if that's the style of riding you grow to enjoy.

I have an mt07 2021 I bought it new 3 years ago and i did a lot of modifications to it i 100% agree that it should have usd forks since the r7 (witch is essentially the same bike) has them, i mounted custom made mounts for radial calipers by brembo and full ohlins suspensions including a steering damper it’s very fun and i enjoy riding it more than my s1k still it’s not a proper “sporty” naked in the end it’s just opinions i love your content keep it up

On the mountain roads I live on, the 09 feels like a big bike with good manners while the 07 felt like riding a wasp. Only reason I'm on an 09 now is I'm 6'3" and it's just more comfortable.

I got a XSR 700, and took my lessons on a MT-07, and they're both basically the same bike. The truth is that this bike hasn't changed much since 2014, while the rest of the industry has put everything they got into making good competitors to it because of how popular it is. I'm happy with mine because I got it for a great price, but brand new it's a much harder sell. The fix would be pretty easy though, just offer a SP version with the R7's improved suspension and brakes and everyone wins.
For your MT, I think some upgrades to the suspension and brakes can really transform it and make it a bike you can love, but you can also just get a Duke 790 and be done with it. I'd look at whichever option is cheaper.
As for my XSR, I love the engine, the compact size, the looks, the ride. The only thing that lets it down is the suspension. I'll have to decide if I want to upgrade it or sell it and get something else when I get my full license. It could make for an awesome cafe racer with some good mods.

The OG Yamaha MT was a massive cruiser engine with suspension and brakes from R1. And the original MT-03 had the 660cc single from the XT. My how times have changed.
If you like the way that the KTM rides but want a little more oomph try an Aprilia Shiver 750. I have a gen 1 & the riding position is close to my Duke 200. A friend has the gen 2 that has higher mounted footpegs & a sportier riding position. They both have everything attached correctly (USD forks, radially mounted brakes etc) and have around a 15 kW advantage over an equivalent MT-07. And, at least here in Australia, they're criminally under rated so they're cheap, especially for an Italian V Twin.

  • @TrashmanShazam
    @TrashmanShazam Před 26 dny +1

Sure it's good to hear bad things about the MT07 compared to most reviews that only say positive but most points you made, besides the front suspension being mediocre, seem to be mostly personal preference, riding style bias, and price based biases. I'd guess mostly aggressive track and street riding you prefer doesn't apply to 99% of us riders and most of us need a bike that is more comfortable for the occasional commute or longer ride and at that price point you are not giving us better comparisons. For Example a Triumph trident 660 or SV650 would be great comparison bikes but I can't see you having any more fun or giving those bikes great reviews either. Not to mention an ADV bike at this pricerange basically puts you on a KLR 650 which was a pretty awful riding experience for me.
I'm probably biased owning one too and It doesn't forgive the MT07 front shocks being so poopoo stock but an hour of my time and $150 in racetech fork springs and 20w fork oil swap and it fixed most of the issues I had with the stock MT07 front shocks. The shocks not being upside down made it much more approachable to do the work myself in my garage and I'll take not dumping my fork oil all over the road inevitably when the seals fail a huge perk, especially for when I'm doing 4-5 hour rides in the middle of nowhere mountain roads. 5min to Adjust the rear preload to be stiffer, and while not perfect, it helps a lot. It's Especially for heavier riders adjusting the preload and most people never touch it and leave it set for the stock 3/10 soft setting for a ~130lb rider.
I think it's still a great beginner bike and forever bike even though I hate how inappropriate the term "beginner bike" is in this context but yamaha probably knows it doesn't make sense to add all those upgrades you want as it would easily raise the cost to be similar to an MT09. Sure if you want to spend $2.5-4k more for an MT09/MT09SP it will be an overall better bike but at a significant higher cost and at a power range most people probably shouldn't be jumping into the bike world into.
I also rode a duke 390 as it was one of the few bikes available bikes to test ride in my $8k budget when I was shopping for my first bike. I found it was fast and handled better compared to the other stuff I was trying (cruisers, ADV, dirt bikes) but unless your very small it's not comfortable to ride and the suspension setup is also not great for a tall rider like me and the top speed would definitely keep me from being comfortable taking it on highways.
I still upvoted and subbed based on your other informational vids. Keep it up I like your content!

It's the same thing as Honda leaving cruise control and decent suspension off the Transalp: they want the price to be such that if you care about suspension and cruise control, the cost to add those things puts your total in the Africa Twin range anyway, so it pushes the customer to buy one of those (maybe it's called "inherent upsell"?). If you want to put proper suspension on the MT-07, you probably also would want the motor to be a little peppier, so after a tune and a pipe and forks and shock, you're close enough to the MT-09 price, might as well just get one of those in the first place. No replacement for displacement, anyway; tune wouldn't even get you there (although it is a lighter bike). Seems to me it's a case of manufacturers making bikes to slot into the market and as offering-tools to guide buyers up to higher-priced models by leaving out desired features. Zach on Daily Rider said something about how the V100 Mandello was different in that respect. Too bad there are no Guzzi dealers or techs...anywhere? Not many in the US, anyway.
