How To Build: A basic Deep Water Culture (DWC) Hydroponics system for 1 plant that can be built in roughly 3 minutes, and costs only $20 for all of it's components.
Check out my other videos on my channel to see the second half of this tutorial where I demonstrate how to transplant a basil clone into this 5Gal DWC setup shown in this video.
Or, see the whole tutorial @ www.outdoorhydro.com
5 Gallon Bucket (Lowes) = $2.78
Air Stone = $6.00
Net Cup = $3.50
Air Pump = $6.95
Total= $19.23
You can set up 5 of these, with one plant each, for $100 even. Things that grow great in DWC systems are herbs like basil, lettuce, and even Tomatoes.
Throw in a rockwool cube with your favorite seed in it, add some sort of inert medium (Hydroton is preferred), and you are ready to grow your own food.
Other things you might need:
*Hydroton
*Plant Nutrients - Jak na to + styl
This is the simplest version I've seen and it's amazing! Love it! Every other video makes it too complicated for a beginner
So generous of you to take the time to share this information. I am very appreciative!!!
Man links for supply list would be freaking SWEET
And here I was goina buy a 80 dollar bucket kit. Wtf. Thanks man. I owe you a big one. Straight to the point
Great video! You should definitely keep making more, you're great at it.
Really helpful - thanks so much for taking the time to help people!
Thanks! I even clicked on a couple ads to give you some profit. I like this simple construction (and yes, as one of the commentors below said - putting a pipe in through the lid would make the business even simpler). +1
I have this exact same setup with a cheap little pump and it works great. I have always grown in soil and want to start doing hyroponic ans this is a great setup
OutdoorHydro Thanks bro! this is much better than those Rubbermaid DWC bins. The flowers can get more space, instead of being all mushed up in one container. I also wanted to build my own since all the ones sold online come with drainage systems that leak. Thanks! I really appreciate the information and links.
@Justin May Excellent point. I actually lost a pump due to this type of negligence.
Like it, no BS. Well done.
You are a Good Guy, thanks for the video
Great tutorial. I actually did a search on this exact system but had a few questions though. What size pump do you recommend for a 5 gal bucket and what brand and size air stone are you using? Sorry for being so specific but our local stores are pretty limited and usually have to buy things online. Thanks again for the vids and I appreciate any help you can offer.
best video by far, thanks heaps
Thanks Joshua! Glad you enjoyed it!
It absolutely is, try your local hydro store. They pop up on Amazon from time to time too, like right now there is one that's exactly the same for $10. I can't post links here so the search term is: "Hydrofarm Active Air Air Pump with 1 outlets 3.2 lt per minute". The air pump I am using in the video is $30 but that's because it's a commercial one that can run 6 systems at once which I have for personal use, but it not the kind you need for just one 5 gal bucket. Hope that helps
It's more like 40 to 50 per bucket
I appreciate the kind words! Yah there are lots of simple tutorials but I am trying to make a full beginners tutorial of how to do it on the cheap. It's a starting off point and can be improved upon for sure, but the scope of the tutorial is just to explain how to get started. Anyone who has a Wal Mart and an internet connection should be able to make this happen fro like $30, not sure why people are having such trouble.
Great tutorial. I can't believe all the negative comments, though.
good video thanks man
Finally somebody who can actually explain this shit, thanks bro
thank you for the video is very educational, i'm new to growing i started with soil but my friend told me hydroponic gets better results.where did you get the 8"netcaps?
HGT Supply. Google it.
also a bigger hole for adding water to the bucket as needed instead of lifting the lid all the time to check water level
Good info
thanks for this ancient but great vid
Good video demo. Did you make the cloning lid? Step bits are great for this and they have them to 7/8 inch and larger. 1/4 size tubing not wire and not 3/4 inch like you said. lol
Joan Burr Salzman
how about a parts list on your pump and the stones?
They make a net pot with a larger internal diameter. With the extra hydroton it helps support the plant better.
One thing He forgot is to add a Drain hole/tube at the bottom. Makes it much easier to change out your nutrient solution
Empty by pouring it out, less than five gallons.
@@harrythompson6854 That gets hard to do with big plants and a bucket full of roots dumbass
@Neo Morpheus You're obviously a moron who has never done this. Its a shit ton of extra work to pour out buckets. Especially when you have a massive root system and 20 plants to do. Indoors.
@@Adol666 do you get more yield than if you would have put them in dirt?
@@jackdorsey8902 I would say yes as long as you use a big enough bucket and proper ferts
One thing I would like to mention to people is that you always want to keep your pump higher than your buckets. If you have a power outage or your pump gets unpluged water can syphon back into your air pump and ruin it.
Nice work thanks. Do you reckon you could substitute coco coir for hydroton?
Have you considered adding a dutch bucket style valve to release the old water?
How often do you change the water is it by the week when you change nutrients?
no need for a stone you can just melt the tube end that comes from the pump and poke holes in it with a bobby pin and presto change-o you got bubbles... you can even fit it to a crazy straw and poke holes in it if you want a bubble wall... thank you Justin your welcome out door hydro. You can also grow in compost tea you can make your self instead of store bought micro nutrients and chemicals and molasses to feed the microbes and give your harvest a slightly sweeter taste. It does not work with everything but it does with most things. Thank you Justin your welcome out door hydro... I think i just cut the cost of a hydro system down to the cost of a single air pump and the grow budget down to the cost of a bag a fert and molasses... 12 dollars tops for the entire year. good luck and god bless :P
What's your thought on Plastics. Nice job on the video.
As it grows, it's roots get larger and the water level drops, you should refill the water once every 2 weeks and leave about 6 inches of the root mass exposed to the air (at least that's how I do it)
How do you clone? Thanks great video
Hello Stewart
I have had some good results with inexpensive Ex cut flower water buckets planting and growing potatoes, carrots, leeks and beans etc in them. I grow these outdoors on my Patio. Is a Deep Water Culture Bucket System suitable for using for root crops?
Water level should be 1” below net pot. This will allow wicking
what size net cup do you recommend for tomatoes
should i have the pump on an smart timer to run for certain intervals
Was there something you were unable to find for the $20? The only parts are a netcup, a $6 airstone and a $6-10 air pump and a $1.50 5 gal bucket. It doesn't factor in cost of nutrients or anything because the price on those varies but for one bucket I wouldn't spend more than $10 on nutrients (use dry nutes).
The.....
HYDRO-TTTTTOOOOOOONNNNN!!!!
Nice video though. Lol. Should make a little water level indicator on the side. Makes life easier.
Lowes has the bucket net cups?
Straight up!!!
yeah you better watch out if it's not too close it will dry out on you I always plant my seed or clone right on the bubbles almost halfway up and fill the rest with your stones I've had one dry out on me because I didn't let it go up high enough
you don't have to spend a massive amount on a air pump you can pick up one online for less then $10 aqua one is a reliable brand. usually come with a year warranty which is great when it's only a few dollars in the first place. the idea is to plan you're system perfectly before begging it as forward planning saves new growers thousands. I know a lot of people who still regret not planning properly or even shopping around.
Should I get a straight up 6 in net pot or a net pot with a 6 in over the bucket lid?
hey have you seen airpots? that use air pruning wat do u think of using that instead of netty pot.
do you have to have a separate pump for each bucket that you use
???
So should I just put the water level an inch above the bottum of the lid bowl that the hydroton are in? If the roots are still short will they get moisture? I guess what I mean is if I put the water level an inch above the bottum of the hydroton will all of the hydroton above it get moisture??? pls help
once the plant has grown say 5 weeks how do you know how much water to add? is it always the same height or does it change as the roots grow bigger and bigger?
Quick question , will One pump Power 4 five gallon buckets??? Or do I need 4 , pumps ?Or I can put it like some kind a splitter on there and Power all 4 Buckets?
Again, if you read my reply, the air pump I have in the video is not needed for this project. That is a commercial air pump to power half a dozen of these systems. The air pump you need is under $10 to make one of these units.
?What is the ROCKS you add, Hydro ? please explain.. I am new to hydro planting
@outdoorhydro Do i need 1 air pump for every bucket i have ?! or can i attach an extention to have 2 buckets per air pump ? thanks.
how many days until you have to change the water?
Ah yes.. growing basil… that is exactly what I do too.
i want to put my plant from dirt in this if roots are not yet out of the net pot should i have it all under water at frist?
@OutdoorHydro stupid autocorrect, I meant to say that the lid must come off frequently for reservoir changes.
did you use any nutrients in the water ?
Where do you get the net cups for a 5 gallon bucket?
where do you buy air stone and oump
How do you water them, do you just refill the bucket when it gets low. If so what if the roots are touching the water how would I refill the water.
Where did you buy the air stone and air pump what’s the strength ?
@iamjust2stone no that would be a baaaad idea. The lids need to come off frequently for real changes and to check the roots. Having to undo the air stone and take the hose out from the lid would be an unnecessary hassle.
wt size air stone for a 5 gallon bucket?
what kind of air stones were those
What is your source for the net lids?
I got a elemental O2 pump and it says Wattage 41W Voltage 120V I want to know isn't that a lot of power to run continuously. And anybody know the money per month that translates to
yeah those stones are the best
Ware can i find this netcups ??
Bubbles provide oxygen not airation ???
How much a pump like that I want a three bucket system
How do you do water changes?
I'm wondering if one of those shiny galvanized 20 Gallon or 31 gallon trash cans would be a good option for growing in. any help in this regard is appreciated.
+The Conservative Libertarian if you're growing a 20 ft plant yes lol
You mean 1/4 hose
I bought a system like this and I noticed it came with 3 rockwool plugs. Can I plant more than one tomato in the 5 gallon bucket?
You could but no more than two. One plant is probably best. If done right the plant will grow like crazy.
Are those buckets food-grade? I have the same ones but I would prefer to use food-grade if possible, and I can't find that info anywhere.
Im not sure that any chemicals would leach into the plant, even if they got into the water.
If you check out the description of the video I have a link to the full tutorial and it includes prices and links to where you can buy them. For a 5 gallon bucket a cheap $6 pump is fine, and any airstone will do honesty.
Have a project, need your advice, how can I get in touch with you?
No Links of supplies used.
what about water pump??? how/where to put water pump if you got 2 separated buckets? isn't better to put in wide container and water pump in middle?
water pump? why the hell would you need a water pump?
dude... try a pet store that specializes in aquatics... you can get all the pumps and stones you wish...
If I used one of those large baskets for tomatoes, how would I stake the tomatoes?
Use a cage or trellis
Lol
Simple, clear and cheap = like and subscribe
How do you do a water change when your plant is 4ft tall and it's also in a SOG, guy!
That's why you try think about those things ahead of time..
What are the cause(s) of smelly/stinky water in this kind of system? Please help alot of mine are starting to smell bad. Plants at risk.
You have to change your nutrients every now and again man..
@@chuckwaardenburg496 no kidding
Will it grow there from start to flower?
Coy Loks yes
The garden hose is 3/4 inch but the aerator hose is probably 1/4 inch 😆
This is aeroponics not dwc hydroponics smfh, I’m a noob and u are leading ppl in the right direction, but you should also explain that dwc have a undercurrent for a reason, you should have a reservoir and as many buckets as u want, but you have to run your lines from the reservoir to each pot and back, best way is using 1 inch vinyl hosing, and square buckets and use hose fittings, run each line back to a submersible pump and you’ll have much better results, if you submerge your pump I was told that you might start fighting with water temps
that air pump is not $6.95 its more.if so can u post site where u got it for $6.95
Can I grow cannabis in this?
Yes
skip drilling a hole for the air line...just feed it through the slots in the net cup...attach multiple hoses to a gang valve and boo-yah
That pump is not 6.95$ lol good vid tho.
That drill probably also isn't factored into the cost of this build.
Caine K. He said the pump was 30$
you can find one for less than $10 on amazon
@@calibomber209 his link does say $6.95, that's why I was watching to see if he says where he got it from
That is a 70 dollar pump!
+Anthony Reyes How do you know? Do you have any photos?
*****
Can I have a link, please? Or the name?
U don't need that exact pump
There is a appointment on your phone
OFFER UP
down load it u Will be able to find all the shit u need a little next to nothing
what in 1980? that air pump you have there is more than $40
Hi, you can buy a factory built unit for about $30 including the pump www.htgsupply.com/products/bubble-boy-single-shot-dwc
5 gallon DWC bucket with pump and tubing and bucket lid...pretty sweet.
except yours are 3.5 gallon.....
Yep, we have 3.5 or 5 gallon units available.
Doesn't really take a very creative mind to solve that one, just cut two half circles of aluminum foil to go over the net pot and tape them together. if you wanted to get more involved just drill a small hole where you want the water level to stop and done.
What took you 4 mins to explain took others 20+ minutes and they missed some of the most important info that you did not. I’ve been growing my cannabis in coco but have had nothing but infestations on my plants, Im looking to switch to a hydro set up for 2 plants and see how it goes. My grow room is so clean and I’m not sure where the fuck the bugs keep coming from. I live in a new house and the rooms kept clean, I’m the only one who goes in there and I only go in there when I’m clean. That means I haven’t gone out into the garden or in the yard or hiking and then went inside my grow room. So hopefully this will help keep the pesky fuckers from ruining another crop.
Why does it say $20 in the description man ? Clickbait?
Snugley!
