How to Change the Color of Your Campfire 2024 - EASY!

  • I made this video to present to someone interested in changing the color of a campfire. Because there aren't any videos similar to this already on CZcams, I decided to publicly upload this video so anyone can change the color of their campfire.
    Things you'll need:
    -3/16ths sized drill bit
    -a copper pipe about an inch wide and a foot long.
    -some gardening hose about a foot long.
    -a metal coat hanger
    -a marker
    -a drill
    -safety glasses.
    -a vice to hold your pipe( optional)
    -a pair of pliers to help bend the metal (optional)
    Steps:
    -Mark alongside your pipe every 2 inches.
    -Rotate your pipe 90 degrees and mark every other inch.
    -Drill holes all the way through the pipe from where each of the marks are at.
    -Use a drill bit to scrap out the sharp edges.
    -Bend the coat hanger and put it through the top holes of the pipe, create a small handle.
    -(Optional) Shrink the end of the pipe down with some pliers so that the garden hose doesn't fall out.
    -Insert the garden hose and place it inside the fire.
    I apologize for the camera shake. The 50mm f/1.4 lens would be great if it had IS. More regularly reoccurring videos to come of visual effects, tutorials, and more.
    DISCLAIMER:
    There is a lot of speculation about this being toxic when burned and some people have even claimed that you can get cancer from this. I doubt there's even enough evidence to back up the cancer claim, but besides the point, there are toxins that may be released when burned.
    CHEMICALLY WHAT'S GOING ON:
    Copper by itself doesn't give off any toxins but when you burn the garden hose you are burning a type of plastic pending on your type of garden hose. The Garden hose is likely polyvinyl chloride. It contains a high concentration of dioctyl phthalate plasticizer. The hose likely contains fiberglass or another roving, heavy metal additives, and other plastics to create the finished article. The hose is placed in a copper pipe and placed in the fire. As PVC is heated it begins to smoke above 100 C. At 200 C loss of hydrochloric acid begins and loss accelerates up to 300 C where PVC quantitatively loses hydrochloric acid (HCl). When HCl is gone the polymer is left as a chain of double bonds (unsaturated). PVC contains 56.7% chlorine indicating that a significant amount of HCl can be produced. There are two paths for the PVC residue after HCL loss. If oxygen is present and sufficient, combustion will proceed. The products of combustion are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and water depending upon a variety of factors. If oxygen is not present or in low concentration thermal decomposition proceeds. The products of thermal decomposition are HCL, benzene, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and a variety of minor components. Thermal decomposition proceeds to completion above 400 C. Is the process safe? There is a level of toxicity that will produce lung and membrane irritation and interfere with breathing with too much exposure.
    RECOMMENDATION:
    A little exposure to this won't hurt you, however, too much exposure could be bad for you. I wouldn't be burning one of these every weekend but maybe once in a blue moon. I've also read that if your fire burns hot enough you don't get as much smoke. The trick is to only put the copper and garden hose in a HOT fire, not one just starting to burn. Less smoke = fewer toxins to inhale. Last but not least DO NOT COOK on fire with this inside !!! The fumes can leave toxins on food which is more harmful digesting than it is inhaling.

    To those interested in the chemistry: copper, when heated in a flame by itself, gives off the greenish color you see at first. When chlorine is also present in the flame, the emmission will become blue instead. Vinyl tubing is polyvinyl chloride, which gives off hydrochloric acid when it burns. Any PVC plastic will work. The chlorine in the acid vapor gives the pretty, blue color. This is the same principle used in blue fireworks.
    Chlorine is also used in green fireworks along with barium, which burns white without it. Copper is not used for green, since barium green is much more brilliant. Strontium, used for red, will work without chlorine, but the color will be deeper if it's present.

      thank you sooo much!!! i was on this festival and there was a fire and somebody vomited into it and then the flames turned all those brilliant colors! .... now your comment was the last puzzle piece of the riddle! i figured it out it was the chlorine from the stomach acid (probably along with some minerals or irons in the wood/nails in the wood or something .... but the chlorine part from the stomach acid thats the point! ..... everyone vomit into fire, it becomes beautiful!!) xDD

      Inform yourself about some firework chemistry, there are some salts and stuff you can buy in powder form for sometimes fairly cheap. Throw that in the flame instead (start with small amounts, different ones burn differently, if it sais Oxide in the end it propably burns really well and always only small amounts of magnesium since it burns super bright and might make you blind if you look right into a large flame)

    • @DrAnderson1
      @DrAnderson1 Před 3 lety +3

      That was my first thought, too...until I started to make one on my own and realized very quickly why he did it that way. You want the garden hose to easily slide out (but not too easily) after the fire has burned it long enough for the colors to fade, in order to continue using the copper pipe with a new section of garden hose, to produce colors again...rather than building an entirely new one each time you want to use it. If you pinch the ends too tightly, you won’t be able to get the used section of hose out of the pipe without a lot of work, or by cutting the bottom with a saw. But, I totally agree with you....everything about that giggle was lovable. He’s like your goofy uncle who always has a way to teach you new things by using items around the house, but when you reach high school age you pretend you’re too cool for that stuff now....and claim to be bored....but you’re really not bored, and he knows that too, so he keeps doing his lessons regardless of how much of a dick you’re being, in order to let you feel cool, but still learn from the experiments. Then 10 years later you find yourself in the garage with your little son, doing all of your uncle’s experiments with him, because your uncle passed away, and you’re keeping his memory alive through your own kids -- Or, I’ve just been listening to way too much Country Music lately, combined with quarantine, and also my uncle died last week.

    How long does this last in the flames?

    If I were to make one of these, I would try to make a loop somehow.

    Thanks ... nice video. Might make drilling the holes in the copper tube little easier if you first make an indentation with a punch or nail. Helps keep the drill bit from sliding from where you want it to be. I think it would take a lot of breathing (a whole lot) the campfire fumes to produce an adverse health effect.

    How many times can you do this? Can you load up another hose inside the copper again after the first time?

    • @RyanRakowski
      @RyanRakowski  Před 10 měsíci

      yes as long as you have more hose you can continue to do this.

    Does the copper tubing chemical reacts to the garden hose in some way? Can it be another type of tubing, like stainless steel? Can't you just throw the hose in and get the affect?

    • @RyanRakowski
      @RyanRakowski  Před 10 lety

      Yes it has something to do with the garden hose and the copper pipping that creates a chemical reaction. I have no idea about other methods.

    I'm an electrician and always have scrap wire... Gonna have to try throwing a wire ball or something in my fire sometime.

    does it have to be a copper pipe? or can it be a diffrent material? and can it be a new hose?

    • @krissykozzy
      @krissykozzy Před 7 lety

      Copper specifically reacts with the flame to give green/blue hues. Other elements react differently (eg Lithium = bright red, sodium = yellow) but they are harder to access and usually don't come in a form as easily handled and manipulated as a pipe. This is how different coloured fireworks function as well.
      Don't know about the hose though, sorry.
