Iceland: lava engulfs road, forcing Blue Lagoon to close
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 02. 2024
- Lava flowed across a road near the Blue Lagoon, a luxury geothermal spa, which closed on Thursday after a volcano erupted for the second time this year and the third time since December. It pumped lava up to 80 metres (260ft) into the air, disrupting life in the Reykjanes peninsula in the south-west of the country.
The lava flow also hit thermal-based water pipes in the region just south of the capital, Reykjavík, disrupting the supply of hot water to more than 20,000 people and leading the Civil Protection Agency to raise its alert level to emergency status

Those construction workers are extremely brave 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Brave or they have to work to preserve their salaries... The rich owners are for sure faaaar away...
@@justiceandfreedom5773 Ofc, when you've made it big, it would be dumb to go and do the little mans job, its illogical.
Lava moves so slow that there is no danger at all
It's actually nice working there', it's nice and warm
The description doesn't fully describe the disaster. Homes in Iceland are heated with steam from hydrothermal plants. not only do people have no hot water, they have no heat in their houses and temps are well below freezing.
It's NOT a disaster. It's geologic activity that's NORMAL for Iceland. The locals know how to handle these types of eruptions, they have been doing it for decades, possibly centuries. The people will be fine, they're not cut off, they're not going without water. Don't let the sensationalism of the internet trick you into thinking that they are just doomed. They're not. This is a small eruption and everyone is going to be OK.
I mean if they're cold I know of a place in Iceland that's currently very warm...
Not steam here. Hot water in pipes as in this case.
But sure, the hot water sometime is heated groundwater from hot steam as in the case of the Nesjavellir power plant near the Thingvalla lake, which is supplying the capital area with much of it´s hot water. The Reykjanes peninsula is supplied with hot water from the ground in Svartsengi power plant. - Cheers, an Icelander.
@@drunkenhobo8020it's a health hazard. Lots of toxic fumes around the lava.
@@MrKorton Thank you
Such a contrast… The lava on the snow. Hopefully the eruption will stop and people and property will stay safe.
Who cares about the property? The full Iceland should grow in height a few meters on the next couple of months. It might warm up a bit as well.
workers should get reward ! amazing job !
Those crews are incredible...🇿🇦
❤
Headline is misleading. The blue Lagoon closed the MOMENT the eruption started.
Or indeed 20-30 minutes before, when earth tremors gave a little warning.
edit: Correcting myself. I've just seen a video where guests could see the volcano erupting from the carpark as they were evacuating.
Also, they’ve been building the lava barriers for weeks in other places in the region.
Mainstream media 101. Also, biden won The election, klauss schwab is your friend and bill gates dont want to depopulate
Hats off and BIG respect to those construction workers!!!
Blue Lagoon Tourists: Does this water seem to hot to you?
Blue Lagoon Corp: Nothing to be worried about.
fireland
Brave workers !
Best wishes to everyone in the area. Stay safe!
Looks like a much tougher cleanup job then our SoCal mud flows!
Actually it's really not that hard to dig through. They should be able to get that road back open within the week
@@deannelson9565 *week later* OMG IM ON FIRE lol
@@deannelson9565 It will take months for the lava to cool and the rocks will have to be built over.
You don't clean it up, you let it sit
@@incaseinever not when it's blocking the only road
wow, what a land to live in! I have never seen lava flows or a volcano firing up. I hear it is possible to see a bunch in Guatemala, at night, whilst sipping a cold beverage.
Hope those crew members stay safe...looks dangerous...
Not much point in staying open if you have to drive through red-hot lava to get there.
Blue lagoon seems to never catch a break
Land of Fire and Ice indeed!
If the eruptions continue, particularly those taking place under water, it could lead to an expansion of the Icelandic territory.
Spa: I'm never going to financially recover from this...
Construction workers living the dream: The floor is literally lava
I am so sorry Icelanders, I think mother nature has ideas of her own. Stay safe, my friends.
Man. Sorry to hear bout your situation, Iceland. :(
I hope everyone misplaced is able to stay warm.
Sincerely,
Canada
never thought I'd see actual lava on snow
When the eruption happens it changes the weather pattern to snow.
The construction workers reminded me of the scene from DUNE when the spice miners worked up to the last minute! Pretty Cool Dudes 👍 TFS, GB :)
I paid for a visit to the Blue Lagoon the week it closed in November. Still not received my refund 3 months later...shameful!😳
This is only the Reykjanes peninsula
as opposed to the whole island.
area been stable since the 13th century
..unlike some other places.
iceland is always tectonically active
Never thought I’d see lava flowing on snow
Wow
The song of ice and fire.
This is so horrible 😮😮😮😮😮😮
EPIC WORK LAVA KEEP GOING ❤
WOW! VERY SCARY! John P.
"Hey. whats the water temperature at right now?"
"Oh, about 3000 degrees."
Other nations go through a lot hey. I wouldn't dream of living in a place that has as much cold and heat at the same time
Fast moving lava.🎉
Wo ist das 👀
Like it should even be open?
Captions written by an intern with no information on the area at all.
too pwerful to stop best pull back to safer land & let it do its thing
A Song of Ice and Fire ✨
There's no way that lava 🌋 is flowing over snow and ice ❄️🌨️ like that
What are "thermal-based water pipes"?
OMG 😱
One does not simply read this title without transitioning to the spongebob narrator's accent when they hit "Blue Lagoon."
That excavator a bit overestimated it's digging capabilities 😂
If it doesn't stop (hope it does) , would it still be iceland...??
Is it safe now to travel in this summer ?😏🤔
Its a mini basalt flat. Lovely.
This is usually what happen when you build your house on a volcano
Nobody can stop mother Nature.
Is that Akainu vs kuzan
This is a start of a new volcano season in the area, the last one ended around the year 1200 and lasted for about four hundred years. This is just the start, Blue Lagoon and the town of Grindavík will go under lava at some point, just a question if it happens next month, next year or in ten years.
Parese un juguete la maquina al lado d la lava...
"Scientists feat volcanic outbreaks in the island could continue for years." Its like its a volcanic hot spot or something. I heard scientists fear the same thing on the big island of hawaii.
Iceland sits on the mid-Atlantic ridge which is a divergent plate boundary, meaning the plates are pulling apart. But Iceland also sits on top of a hotspot just like Hawaii, which is why it's the only part of the mid-Atlantic ridge that is above water. Very fascinating geology in Iceland.
Iceland is burning! 😮
How shall they stop it
Closed!? The Blue Lagoon Needs To Be Abandoned!
It will probably be destroyed by lava soon unfortunately
I hope it isn't abandoned. I liked the Blue Lagoon when I went there.
For safety, We don't want to see people dying a horrific death from contact with lava or steam or gas.@@johnbradshaw7525
@@johnbradshaw7525 many people in Iceland hate it, call it too expensive, the begged for moneybags during Cov but had a record year just before. Their handling is moneybased. Just like everything else in this country
@@user-mo6tv2yd1z It's a tourist attraction. No-one is forced to go there. I thought it worth the money when I visited.
There is ice, then there is fire.
🤔 did they get the same coverage as Hawai'i ❓️
Yikes it looks like that lava is moving faster than that backhoe can run from it.
The driver is screaming at the digger to go FASTER and promising it a fresh oil change.
I wonder what if refrigerate front of lava by 20 Chemical fire engine.
Aokiji and Akainu did that.
this is a very fast lava. due to its material composition.
it had to rise from the earth's core through the mantle, that's why it's speed. the lava temperature there is huge now, much higher than before.
and it will not subside. this is confirmed by the many earthquakes. these are not earthquakes, but lava rising from the core. so much pressure there now.
What to expect... they're living on a volcan
Will need brushing off
Lavaland!
Probably time to abandon the area altogether
Iceland The Land of "Fire", Greenland The Land of "Ice".
Japan's hot springs are all by natural volcanic vents.
All vents are under control.
er... it was already closed. Just as well...
Independent journalism…why does it sound like all the others, if it’s independent? Bought and payed for, you mean.
Iceland has become Fireland? That’s wild. They can move to Maine for 2 years free rent
They should not wait long to fix the warm water pipe otherwise with only cold water the vikings coming back.
The name should temporarily be changed from iceland to lavaland
Pray for Iceland🇮🇸 🙏
Ice and fire
Is the main eruption over?
Nope. This is the 3rd eruption in 3 months, looks like there is going to be a new eruption every month now
In this particular series, the eruptions have been fairly short, unlike a few years ago. There is a magma chamber under the Blue Lagoon. This the third time that it has filled up and caused an eruption. It's like a balloon full of magma 5k underground. It slowly swells up until the pressure builds and then, every 25 days, or so, the lava breaks through the surface. But the eruptions stop after only a day or so. It will keep doing that as long as magma keeps flowing into the chamber. We'll know a few days after this one ends whether the chamber is filling up again.
I believe it has only just begun. From my understanding , the pressures are too high generated from the volcanoe and if the lava does not keep pushing out at a rate to relieve the built up presuure, than its going to be a big , big problem.
No. Considering how bad they can be in Iceland , these are only small volcanic fissure that have opened. Hopefully Iceland never gets to see the BIG ONE because there will not be much left of Iceland for the locals to inhabit for a century or more.
Floor is lava
Iceland should change its name to Lavaland
It's kinda like florida's gulf.
Iceland became lavaland😂😂
Looks like punk hazard 😅

Iceland Irony Lava 😮
Siberian Traps "The eruptions continued for roughly two million years and spanned the Permian-Triassic boundary, or P-T boundary, which occurred around 251.9 million years ago. The Siberian Traps are believed to be the primary cause of the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the most severe extinction event in the geologic record"
The Siberian and Deccan traps were flood basalts. Iceland is just a nice little plate spreading boundary. If you want a worst case estimate look at the eruption from 1783. Icelandic lava can contain a lot of fluorine - hydrofluoric acid poisoning is nasty. They lost half of their livestock and a quarter of the population starved. When a magma chamber gets active the eruptions can last years. This set started three or four years ago.
Icelandic? Nah, Lavalandic
No surprise
Akainu and aokoji
Very dangerous
Lavaland
akaino vs okiji be like:
😢
Dont star lives in u land with volcano in place because it so dangerous
so after the last eruption calmed down, did the geothermal plant frack again to cause this one?
Blue lagoon more like frozen lagoon ha hah hah
I am supposed to be visiting Iceland in 5 weeks time, really concerned about my holiday. Keflavik airport is on the Reykjanes peninsula where the activity is.
The heat is out for the whole area. Check things before you go.
Nothing to fear. It is too far away to be affected in a serious way although you can see the eruptions very well. - cheers.... an icelander
I would cancel if I'm just being honest, it's not safe. ❤
Iceland is the most misleading name
