got the oled, didnt have an lcd before, and can say ive not had an issue with the battery life. the oled screen at 40% is as bright as my laptop screen at 100%. have used it basically every day since i got it, which means ive hurt my sleep schedule, but im actually getting thru games i was putting off due to having to sit with a hot, noisy laptop.
it's also an emulation beast.
literally its crazy. i play baldurs gate at max brightness and get 3 hours
Sitting in front of a tv is not that comfy.. that's why people love handheld consoles. Oled is great for viewing. I use mine for PlayStation remoteplay mostly, since Sony ditched PS4 compatibility on PlayStation portal

Battery life is amazing, so I couldn’t agree anymore than you. I got the oled when it first dropped and battery lasts me a good 3-4 hours. I never had the original deck but this is amazing.
As soon as I started playing games on my OLED I noticed immediately that they almost all ran better than on the old deck
Valve even made the Oled model easier to fix. Plus, replacement parts are easily obtainable. They seem to care about their customers.
I love the steam deck so much I was happy to upgrade. Steam deck made me able to actually play games and discover games I never even knew about before owning the deck. Now I can play whenever without hogging the tv. When you’re married to a non gamer it is very hard to play.

The Steam Deck OLED is an amazing system. I bought one in December (never played the LCD version), and it's now my go-to machine. I absolutely love it!
I was on the fence on getting a Steamdeck for a while now. When the Oled came out, my decision to get one was set.
I got my Oled Steamdeck a few weeks ago, and it’s been amazing! I love how my Steam saves carried over, so I didn’t have to start over.
Screen is beautiful, I love how vibrant the colors are.
My SD Oled just arrived today. I'm so freaking excited to finally experience the world of handheld PC gaming.
Have an LCD already like yourself. Ordered an LE even though I know I didn't need it, but man I Wanted it, and boy did it deliver in a way that feels way above just the specs and upgrades alone. It was already such a fantastic handheld, and the OLED upgraded nearly everything that should have been upgraded. It's fantastic all around. Now I have two Steam Decks which I got my Dad using for the game Sledders which scratches the itch of Snowmobiling while we were waiting for the snow during Christmas. Also. The OLED Deck is lighter, but the LE Deck, is even Lighter than that!?
Totally agree on all fronts. I loved my LCD Deck for the short 8 months that I had it. For perspective, I was planning on getting the LCD Deck for my girlfriend for Christmas but the OLED was announced around that time so I decided to wait to see if I could snag one first. When it came in, I wanted to test it out to make sure it worked and also wanted to install and set up game for her so she could play right out of he box. Within the first few hours, I fell in love with it and decided to sell my LCD for my own OLED to mitigate the cost of the upgrade.
It's easily the best decision I've ever made, but I still want to point out that the LCD is amazing on it's own. If I didn't have the OLED to compare it to, I would be blissfully happy with it.
Well I hope I made the right choice spending 200 more for the OLED.. just ordered my deck 2 days ago. I have wanted a deck for a while but it was hard for me to justify it since I have a nice 3080gpu but I'm in A circumstance where I can't play my PC for more than a few hours a day(off grid living) I also have a c1 oled as a monitor and now the deck is OLED I had to make the purchase

Great video! Noone's talking about the faster charging. That has been game changing for me since I don't like playing tethered. Imagine I come home I fire up the deck I see it's on 30% , charge it for 30-40 mins until I take a shower, grab something to eat and it's up to 80% .. ready to go!
I didn't have the O.G steam deck, went straight to the OLED so i can't compare it to anything. But now that you mentioned it. It does charge really friggin' fast. I didn't even think about it.

I own the previous Steam Deck LCD 500GB flagship version and still have no regrets getting the Steam Deck OLED LE version. The OLED screen just looks much better and the fan is so silent even when gaming. My LCD version gets too loud in comparison.
Valve is doing such a super job with the Steam Deck that I'll definitely get the Steam Deck 3 too whenever it gets released. 👍

I had the og deck, but decided to buy the oled anyway... and I made the right choice: the oled screen is in an another league and 90hz feels super smooth! Even 30hz, 40hz, 45hz feel smoother.
Also, battery upgrade is huge: it is even more noticeable with games that consume few tdps
@@Enyel210 Realistically you won't use that 90Hz unless maybe, perhaps if you Stream content from your desktop (would need to use Moonlight, Steam Remote Play is hard capped at 60fps). Even such a simple game as Vampire Survivors crunches down to 20fps on the Steam Deck once the things get going. Also the screen still doesn't support variable refresh rate so that 90Hz isn't exactly an upgrade that matters a whole lot. You will still be capping your framerate at 40 or 60 for best battery life (and if you're at home and you own PC, just do yourself a favour and stream it - your Deck will last 7hr on battery with framerate and fidelity that your desktop allows you to, there's just 0 reason to run game on the Deck itself if you're just moving to the couch.

I was not convinced when the original Steam Deck was released, first I’m not a big fan of handhelds, secondly I remembered the Steam Machines, and I did not wanted to be early adopter.
But Steam Deck OLED is a beast. Does wonder for my backlog of games, I also use it in docked mode hooked to 27” display as Linux PC and its works. I’m really impressed what this small, low powered device can do.

Listen you are not being overdramatic you are on point . The steam deck oled is amazing for a refresh . Just imaging the 3rd and 4th gen ! If you have the money definitely get the oled only ….if you have lcd just get rid of it lol you can give away trade sell whatever just start enjoying that oled now lol life is too short enjoy now .
The main reason i like the steam deck more than a pc is that you dont just have to sit at a chair to play the games you love you can do it on your couch or your bed and the deck itself still runs just as well if not better than a whole ps4

This has been very insightful, I am from India and a proud owner of steam deck, I am simply in love with valve & their team thanks to deck, everyday I learn something new about it & reflects how much time effort & thought they have put into making the steam deck lcd & now you are telling me that valve has done it again with oled deck. Been looking at the steam deck for a while now, even before the OLED, but having a pretty decent gaming PC with my monitor, have held off, but now with my job I'll be traveling a lot, away from home up to 3 months at a time, and don't want to lug my consoles around with me, so... ordered my 1TB OLED just yesterday and super excited to get my hands on it! Great video and review, and kinda glad I held out so that I could end up with this version over the LCD.

I don't think Valve actually has a marketing team. They make a product like once every 5 years and they just have the engineers do the ad roll.

It's true that the battery life is INSANE. I literally did a transatlantic flight with 1 stopover and a total travel time of 12 hours (from the first flight departure) , I played the whole time during the flights (FFX remaster) and i arrived at 3% battery (starting from 96 %) only when there were about 2h left. Excluding the 1h stopover in amsterdam it means that 93% of the battery lasted something like 9 hours. It's just insane. Then I simply charged it with a powerbank till 15% at around 15W charging, took like 20-30 mins while I was doing something else. Then played the other 1h30 while plugged to the powerbank to avoid getting the battery too low. 93% 9 hours. Any other PC handheld would have already died not even at the end of the first flight inside europe lol.
Great video, thank you for this...your question at the end about who should upgrade from lcd to oled...I think if you got the lower end of the lcd...y'know, the 64gbs version....take the leap and get the terabyte oled....upgrades all round....better screen, battery life, storage and al the rest of it. I upgraded from the LCD after exactly a year of owning it and I don't regret it 1 bit. It was already my favorite device ever, so ofc I wanted the best version of it.
Agreed Agreed and agreed. For sure for me it was 100% worth upgrading for me..... the experience to me has increased dramatically when it comes how pleasant the screen is to look at, how much better battery is and i do notice slight performance boosts and for some triple A games an extra 3-7fps sometimes more depending on the game makes a difference especially if it means not going under 30 fps or even not going whatever fps cap you cap it to.
I heard it's capable of 1000nit peak brightness? HDR games should look amazing right? Mine should be here in 2 days... Can't wait.

I am upgrading from LCD to OLED. My biggest complaints about original deck was it was loud, heavy and had poor battery life. Valve is playing it smart. They focus on user experience. For example they don’t ship device with full HD screen because there is no chip that can handle Full HD screen and provide good battery life anyway.

The reason why Valve doesn't want this to be overblown is because they still need to sell the old gen version of the Steam Deck.

Is it important to put a screen protector on the OLED anti glare version? I heard it may not need one, but what do you think? Any brand recommendations?
if you wanted the screen protector you chose the wrong deck. Glossy deck is much more flexible for this. With the matte oled any screen protectors will ruin your experience: with the glossy protector if you have the worse of both worlds: not vivid colors for the matte underneath and the reflections of the protector, with the matte protector you have a worse quality matte above and with double matte layers you'll have washed out colors.
This is one of the reasons I picked up the glossy deck. Much more versatile. Glossy is the best choice unless you're playing outside under the sun. But that's not the use case for 99.99% of the people. I play it at home, during flights or train rides without any issues whatsoever. I put a glossy screen protector on my glossy screen. Zero regrets.
I’ve had the anti glare lcd for a year without a screen protector and it’s been just fine. YMMV.
@@poopymcfartbean it's a protection against accidents that can happen. If you in a year didn't have accidents good for you but people like to protect expensive devices against possible scratches or damages

I had the 64gb lcd with a 1tb micro. I was so sick of dealing with shaders filling it up. so upgrading to a 1tb alone made it worth it. but with it being lighter i play it so much more now, on the lcd my wrist would start to cramp after a hour so it was annoying to play. that dose not happen anymore, so now i play it all the time

I’ve just gone for the 512Gb since I don’t mind missing out on the etched screen since I prefer glossy.
But curious as to which one you bought and if it’s really worth the upgrade for the 1TB stock model vs the 512gb stock model?
yeah i did 512 too, i prefer glossy on OLED, i'm not planning on increasing the SSD, but if i did i'd go to 2tb
i got the limited edition 1tb oled model, put on a glossy screen protector now i cant tell it was ever etched to begin with, definitely worth it for the LE alone
@@SvGPlayer831 maybe that was your impression but there are several videos that shows that it's not the same thing as having a glossy screen you still partially lose vivid colors and true blacks because of the matte underneath.

Got a question about the chargers. Isn't it recommended to use the 45w to not charge too fast making the battery life drop faster than it would? I was using the 65w on a deck base and also another different to travel, but seems the battery life dropped a little more than expected for me.
nah it shouldn't make a difference, i've tested my deck out with a bunch of different chargers and if you go over 45w on the charger, the deck wont charge any faster. 45w will hit the max charging speed, going over wont increase that speed
You also have to take into consideration updates to the game that increased performance and take less power draw

Got my SD in March of 22'. I have to fight my urge tooth and nail every day to wait for the SD2. My reasoning? My SD works great, I mostly play plugged in on the couch so I'm not taking up the TV on the PS5 (chiaki4deck) or in the office away from my wife and kid, that means battery life is rarely an issue (I also carry a 25k battery pack when i'm not home). The screen and the better ram are a HUGE pull for me, but then I'd have almost a thousand bucks on a 1st gen console, so I'll wait for the next one.
I bought the 64 gig model a year ago so it was not enough storage for me so I bought the 512 oled a few days ago Hopefully it will be her soon
Steam Deck LCD battery hasn't been an issue for me yet and I put it through the paces. It's great compared to competition. I think you have a battery issue.

Usually when I'm playing on the couch or whatever, unplugged, I always limit the TDP and adjust settings for better battery life. I've never heard the fans ramp up while playing. In every way the device was a pleasant surprise. Actually loving the desktop mode too. It's not as good as my daily Linux box, but not far off. I could see myself using the Deck as a daily driver.
It'll get to the point that it's comparable to your Linux box and I can't wait for that day that both of us can enjoy something that advance and easy to travel with

Nah you nailed the head, ever since i picked up the OLED i completely stopped playing on my computer it runs things so much smoother in the steamOS environment and the mods already available make it perfected.

This elden ring part is so true. I recently bought the ally and played elden ring and it is so much better, but the battery life is even more terrible.

my original Steam Deck stopped working and was no longer under warranty. after a good amount of diagnosis it turned out to be the main board so it was unreparable. I waited a few months and finally purchased an OLED Steam Deck. this is a different machine folks. it's better than the original. they may not call it an upgrade but it's an upgraded unit.

nah, both versions should support the same games
a potential problem with your battery test is that the battery is going to show signs of decoration first so your old handheld might just have a degraded battery
I really wish they would upgrade connectivity on it - like bring USB4 or add more ports since they've taken the time and effort to redesign PCB... the amount of people walking around with dongles strapped to their Deck is a clear message that many people DO need it - one extra USB-C or even full size USB-A would go a looooong way. Also custom back paddles that come with JSAUX backplate for the original Deck are the GOAT.

i have to point out that your LCD deck has a more degraded battery than the oled one and in the temps test the oled is heating up the LCD deck by blasting the heat upwards into the LCD deck intake

for emulators, unless you're really wanting more better life or the "grey" bezels of the LCD really bug you, i'd say just hold out
in my experience with emulating on the deck, you get pretty good battery life with the LCD anyways so i dont think its necessary

The Steam Deck OLED is my first Handheld PC and I wasn’t sure if I would keep it or not. After the first week this wasn’t a question anymore. I already upgraded to an 2TB SSD and use it every single day … mostly to play Cyberpunk at the moment. By the way … I‘ve never seen a product with such a consumer friendly engineering regarding repairability/upgradeability. The cooling is awesome. I never play with headphones and I cannot hear the fans at all. I think it’s an awesome device and worth the money.
I made my boyfriend get the OLED steam deck for himself as a nice gift that I knew he’d use, and he’s never had an issue with the battery, says the screen looks amazing, and (even though he hates playing on anything portable) says the handling, size of the device and interface of the buttons is entirely bearable to use when he’s away from the house.
His only issue is the speakers, as some games on Steam are extremely quiet, he says the LCD’s speakers were actually louder 😮 I find it interesting and I’m glad he’s happy with it. I wish I had one now 😂

can be worth checking the speaker volume levels in desktop mode, the max volume may not actually be max'd out, i had that issue with bluetooth audio, when paired to the deck, i used a bluetooth devices own volume up/down and at max it was quiet, on desktop mode the bluetooth audio for some reason was only on 50% of max, if that can happen to bluetooth it can happen to any audio device and is worth checking out.

So… compared to the ally and the Legion Go.. still go with the Steam Deck? I am primarily a console gamer.. I bought a pretty mid range PC that I’m slowly upgrading it to a damn good gaming machine but I ran into some slight hiccups and it’ll take longer than I expected it to.
I was planning on getting the OLED but then people told me to look into the Ally.. but Ally 2 is coming out sometime in 24.. I decided I won’t be doing that lol. Legion Go seems a bit “more” than I want to deal with on a handheld.
So.. I’m leaning towards the SD OLED..
Worth it? People online tell me that “you won’t be able to play every game on Steam..” and honestly I’m not entirely sure that’s something I even want to do. 😂

A new feature that you missed: Bluetooth controllers can wake the OLED model from sleep. On the LCD model, only wired USB controllers (or controllers which use a USB dongle such as the Steam Controller) can do this.
Locked fps not only improve battery life, also smoothness, unless your screen have VRR always lock fps

This is also a win for those in other countries where getting a Steam deck is hard, the 64GB LCD variant prices are dropping to an affordable price and simply buying a dock and a microSD card and you got yourself a portable gaming PC and also can run Linux for office work, Windows is also an option but I heard it’s clunky, now I’m planning to save up and get one so I can move my games from my laptop(to use for rendering and video editing only) to the steam deck and free up space, also a 15.6in gaming laptop is not a good travel buddy at all 🤣

Damn I've had my steam deck lcd since launch, the battery was decent at launch(decent is generous) but holy crap has it got so bad, even low demanding games struggle to play for more than 2 hours. Im sure that extra hour would come in clutch a lot.
its SO nice, i was having the same trouble as you, and the OLED is pretty much double the battery for me which is unreal good
While the battery life is definitely a big improvement, it might not be as big as your test suggests, as it's not really a like-for-like comparison.
Your LCD model had been heavily used for over a year, whereas your OLED model is nearly new. The LCD model's battery likely has some decay, which is typical for Li-ion batteries, and would potentially be quite significant if you were cycling charges a lot (especially if you drained the battery deeply before recharging), or keeping it at 100% charge while playing demanding games a lot (heat from games + high charge = higher battery decay).
Overall, I agree with your sentiments though, as someone who upgraded from an LCD to OLED model as well.
