    The biggest change for me was having Legendary Powers automatically added to your codex when you salvage them, so now I can stop sorting through tons of legendaries just in case I want to use the power off one in the future. That plus a lot of the drops have been streamlined to give you less junk so my inventory feels super clean and manageable now.

    I could be wrong, I've been out of the loop on D4 for awhile, but I think they mentioned that this "season" would be shorter. That is because it isn't actually a traditional season but more of a pause for them to work on QoL before the next season and oncoming expansion.

      They said this season is shorter due to them having to delay the start of it. I believe it was supposed to have started middle of April.

    • @abraxis59
      @abraxis59 Před měsícem +2

      Just FYI the season is shorter simply because they added time to the last season so they could do a PTR. So the new season just started a bit late due to the added testing for base mechanics and the pit. It is not actually ending early at all.

    Thanks for this! Sometimes it’s tough when to know when to get back into a live service title, as a lot of the big updates don’t do much to help with repetition or content droughts. Think I’ll do the same as you and wait for the expansion before getting back into it!

  • @abraxis59
    @abraxis59 Před měsícem +34

    I play D4 a good bit. I found your take on the new season and the loot system fair, interesting and different than my own. I am honestly sad that you did not enjoy the redo as I respect your opinion and I know that you wish all the games you try well. If I may, I would like to cover a few more details that I think are worth mentioning for others (I don't think any of this will change how fun you found things). This is long so those who don't care I totally understand and just please ignore this but I tried to segment it so you can just read the things you care about.
    1. Loot system core - the idea of the new loot system, while also making the base of it simpler was to streamline the process of figuring out if something is worth keeping. So, once you hit world tier three, yellows are worthless and you just crunch them for crafting mats. Once you hit WT4, basic legendries eventually become worthless because all you want is items with GREATER affixes (see below). It just makes the evaluation process MUCH faster and easier.
    2. Loot system Greater Affixes - one extra detail that I think may make a bit of a difference for some is that, in world tier 4, items can randomly have affixes that are GREATER. These are affixes that will be 150% of the max of normal affixes. The item can have anywhere from one to ALL of its aspects be greater affixes. So effectively there is another tier of loot before crafting. They also made it easy for you to tell you got one because the item on the ground and in your inventory will look like a legendary with a sun symbol on it.
    3. Loot system Tempering - while I 100% agree with the evaluation that you have to MAKE your cool gear and some may not find that fun, there are two things worth noting that I think are "fun" in this regard. First, you don't start with all the different tempering options. So, just like loot, there are various rarities of tempering recipes you have to go out and collect and most tempering recipes are still a bit random in that you can get 2-6 options in each recipe. They do not make this especially hard to get them, but it is another dimension to the loot cycle. Second, and more importantly, the Tempering system not only gives you agency in how your gear turns out, they added some very interesting new affixes that change some of the base attributes of your skills and allow you to try to fill gaps more effectively. Want more tornados for your Barb? Slap extra or bigger tornados on multiple weapons and watch what happens (they even had to nerf this so you could see your screen). Need more resist or resource regen? Temper it on your item. Want your Golem to hit like a truck? Add + golem damage to your gear. You can even increase the size of your AOE affects until they are nearly screen covering size.
    4. Aspects - While the Aspect system works as described, there is a lot more to this change that makes it much more impactful. In the old system, only I think around 1/3 of the aspects were in your codex and only at the lowest level (permanently). This was a bad system because any aspect with a "good role" or any aspect that was not in the codex had to be found randomly. Because of this, players had to hoard items with well rolled aspect in their inventories and would often not use the best aspects always waiting for a better piece of gear to put it on. This was changed in two ways. First ALL aspects are now go into your codex once found when you dismantle an item (they actually put a symbol on items that will improve your codex when dismantled). Second, any time you dismantle an item that has a better version of the aspect it is saved PERMANENTLY to the codex. No more hunting for the same aspect over and over again once you have the perfect version. In fact, you will naturally get them all over time, so farming them is a thing of the past. This has the intended secondary effect of completely emptying out our stash. So now there is plenty of room.
    5. Helltides - Everything that was said about helltides in this video was also 100% accurate, but there is a bit more. First the GTA style wanted system comes with ever increasing monster density, so it can become quite relentless especially at lower levels. Second, the chests in helltides have been redone so ALL of them are the chests that used to be rare and the ashes needed to open them are plentiful and get picked up from a much larger range, so no back tracking for them any more. Finally, these chests and other things drop hearts. These hearts are like the season 2 mechanic that everyone loved. There is a place in every helltide to start a group event by placing 3 hearts. It effectively summons a helltide boss who is quite nasty and drops great loot. The helltide system is now intended to be your primary way to level to WT3 and 4 and it is INSANELY fast. It is so fast to level now in fact that some may not like it.
    6. Obols - there is a gambling mechanic that they have now made very effective. Now, at level 100, the "obols" you pick up can be used to gamble for items that are max level and can have greater affixes just like the ones that drop off of mobs. So, it has now become a super fast and super effective way to fill an item slot that has stubbornly not been dropping for you with the greater affixes you want.
    Final notes. The assessment of the pit is super fair and the master crafting system is not worth talking about because it is purely an end game system. So, if you stick around for that, you don't need me to talk about it 😀
    Thank you to anyone who read this and found it helpful and sorry if you did not.

      I also played a bit (all day to be precise) and I agree with most of your points.This season feels great and made a lot of builds viable using tempering, some are very op, but honestly, I don't see a problem with that, since even the "weaker ones" can get you very far.
      Overall, a lot of good foundations laid out, more diversity/choices on how you lvl up and get/craft gear and lots of QoL that were needed.

    I've been hooked on Diablo 2 again for a few weeks now, my guilty pleasure since 2001. I'm aware that the loot system is tricky and makes the game look almost like a slot machine, but Diablo 2 has something magical that neither Diablo 3 nor Diablo 4 have been able to equalize.
    I don't know if it's the item system, or skills, or item drops... but Diablo 2 continues to be much more addictive and rewarding with every thing I get. It surprises me how despite the "things" to do in Diablo 4 endgame, I prefer to be repeating the same area over and over again in Diablo 2 XDDD

The leveling process feels a lot smoother and goes by a lot quicker, and the simpler loot setup is more fun to play with.
    Endgame has more to do at first, but it’s still the weaker point of the game imo

    Not only it cost SO MUCH MONEY, but the required pit materials are so high too! you need more than a 100 to 200 mats for a rank 7 and 8 upgrade and the pits drop something like 50 mats at the highest tier for that mat(yeah I know you can exchange them too but not the MW 8+ mats). the problem is the pit enemies will become such damage sponges as you go higher that it becomes tedious going through the pit. also, the rewards for such high-difficulty pits are pathetic! at least give us guaranteed higher affixes for 90+ pits, you know something to actively look forward too

      I have to say I'm REALLY enjoying the new loot system over the old one. So I actually disagree Mortismal Gaming on this.
      The removal of Aspects inventory management is a complete game changer for the better. Tempering is great. The way they've balanced overworld activities is really well done so that just about everything feels rewarding.
      I still have a ton of things I'd do differently and I can't speak to the ultimate end game...but I normally played other characters to roughly level 80 and this experience to 80 was better than those.

    Question for the community: Is D4 worth returning to at this juncture? I bought it Day 1 and played it for about 3 weeks before switching to PoE. What's the consensus these days?

    • @Aiglos78
      @Aiglos78 Před měsícem

      As a super devoted D2 player of 20 years and someone who loved what D3 eventually became, I feel like D4 has finally arrived at that synergistic point where the dev team understands what was mainly appealing about both of those games and really wants to serve that to the community. I know that's vague...but if nothing else, the dev team have taken in a toooooon of feedback and acted accordingly while still offering some cool new stuff like tempering that I think will give the game significant longevity. The moment-to-moment gameplay was always pretty great. But every class now feels rightly powerful and build diversity this season is at an all-time high. So my personal take is that if you've been a fan...now is the time to jump back in because I think this season is probably the ramp up toward big things to come. I suspect that the new expansion is going to be the turning point for this game...which if you're a Diablo fan you'll know has literally been the case for EVERY single Diablo game. People tend to forget how I'll received the initial iteration of each game was until their expansions came, and in each case, that literally ended making those games into classics.

    I’m glad D4 is about on par with D3 now but I’m honestly tired of these Reborn or 2.0 patches modern games get. If this is a sequel to a game, learn from the previous! Even if that team is gone, the current team has the code, millions of people online, and thousands of videos detailing what worked and what didn’t. There is no excuse for a Triple A game to need a patch like this in the first place.

    My main problems after beating the game originally was that leveling felt slow and enemy density was too light. I jumped on last night for the first time in forever and both of those felt great! The complexity of the gear didn't go down. They just removed stupid stats that never should have been a thing. They added new modifiers in their place that actually can be build defining/enhancing in unique ways like multiple projectiles or chance to freeze/stun/immobilize enemies giving you a way to cc enemies without having to use a dedicated skill to do so.

    Loot being mostly good only after running it through the crafting monotony kinda sours the whole looter experience. Lol. The fun of looters are you'll find a bunch of loot, and sometimes it'll be upgrades on what you got. But now you find stuff that are upgrades, but only after you send it through the crafting section of the game. Not a huge loss for me though. The overall changes are nice. Shame that the season is kinda just a watered down season 2. I didn't really have the drive to keep messing with the system.

    It's a start.
    I still think the game needs:
    -More monsters/enemy types. Enemy variety compared to others in the genre is pretty terrible. So many identical bandits, ghosts, etc.
    -Another class (holy-type/sword and board-type, ideally, IMO)
    -More dungeon tilesets. Again, nowhere near enough variety here for a giant AAA ARPG.
    -More outdoor environments and more varied environments. These do look great, though...Even with all the brown. Seriously, 90% of this game is burnt sienna and raw umber.
    -An actual day/night cycle. Look at Titan Quest. That top down ARPG has a day/night cycle. In D4, sometimes it looks like night and sometimes it looks like day. There are two lighting conditions. That's it. This is not and never was a day/night cycle.
    -Socketables are still garbage, and they played around with that for season 1...But then...Nothing. Gems still suck.
    -Something to do while leveling other than racing to endgame. There's basically no crafting or anything to do while leveling anymore.
    -More free item skins. There isn't enough visual variety in gear sets or colorways, and even the "premium" skins aren't great or beautiful, IMO. Also, I've played 2 classes to above level 90, and I still haven't unlocked all the item skins. Or are those unfilled spaces for the shop and battle pass items?

    This actually sounds like a real QOL update. Streamlined loot is better for me. But the problem of needing to upgrade an item to see if it's actually better than what you have is already the problem I had with gear. I don't have a problem with that grind, but it's silly to never know if an item is better than what I already have until I spend the resources to upgrade it.
    I liked the rifts in D3... I just didn't want to grind them forever. Just like the dungeons: they're fun, but after I've done all of the ones that give my sorc it's affixes, I don't see a reason to the other 120 of them because it's more of the same.
    Crafting may be better than waiting for loot to drop (which is already dumb for the reason in my first point), because I least I can work towards something instead of praying to RNGesus for a better drop.
    That being said, I'm with Mortismal on this one; I'm waiting for the expansion. D3 was only really good after Reaper of Souls and after a bunch of patches, and D4 is probably going to be the same. No point grinding it right now because my progress might just be reset at the expansion's release.
    PS: I'm going to skip the expansion if I have to start a new character and do everything all over again. Not going to happen. Doing one character was more work/trouble than I wanted (and I only got my sorcerer to level 62 and beat the WT IV capstone dungeon before putting the game down).

As a D2 super fan I was so hopeful for D4, but after playing through two seasons I just went back to D2R. It’s not that the itemization is perfect in D2, it’s just so much more interesting than D4s.
