    For me, Goya is everything.
technique-wise, the fast brush, (there's Velázquez in there too), is so impressive.
But he is the first "artist" in my humble uninformed opinion.
One professor of mine used to say that if he would have died at 40, we wouldn't be talking about him today.
The way he used art to cope with his severe illness, painting nightmares, centuries before Surrealism, (or mental heath therapy), and mainly how he couldn't help to paint the horrors of the wars made him a true artist to my eyes.
Others portrayed the world and its ideas wonderfully. But Goya was like a truthsayer who couldn't help to portray the horrors of the human condition.
Maybe he was not as influential as Velázquez or El Greco?. Maybe.
    Lovely video, thankyou.

You are so right about both Velazquez and Goya. As I said in the video, there are hundreds of artists I could have chosen - all equally valid. I have another installment of this topic planned...so watch for it! Thanks so much for your comments, interest, and support. I really appreciate it.

before seen the video the artists who came to my mind were Édouard Manet, Vincent Van Gogh and Marcel Duchamp

All excellent choices. Manet was one of my choices originally, because I was going to present 6 artists instead of 4. But in 10 minutes? I may do a second one after I hear what others have to say. And I really LOVE Marcel Duchamp. He is one of my favorite artists. Thanks for the comment and for watching the program.

    Great video Dr Euler!
I wonder who would be the top 4 most revolutionary artists outside of the Western canon.
and whether any currently active artists will be considered revolutionary!

Great questions. My field is not really non-Western art, although I have at least one Japanese nominee, Ogata Korin. There are certainly contemporary artists that will be considered revolutionary, but only time will tell.

Really interesting, although can Picasso be attributed to that much in modern art? I think it's a bold statement to say that he invented collage when there were so many other artists around that period and even earlier using this technique.

Actually, Picasso, Braque, and Gris were the first to use what we call collage, although decoupage had been used for years and years, especially in France. I know what you mean about other artists around this time period using collage because it was a VERY short period of time. We are talking months here! But think of Picasso and collage as the same as Polykleitos and the concept of contrapposto. He did not "invent" it per se, but he created wide-spread interest - and others followed. With collage, like with his assemblages, Picasso's clout in the world of avant-garde art gave the technique of collage wide-spread visibility - and others followed. So...thank you so much for your comments. I LOVE a good academic discussion. Keep watching my programs!
