My expectations for most DNDads fan content is very low, but this is surprisingly fantastic.
This animatic is bursting with the storytelling, soul, and proper characterization that the majority of others lack severely. You make the characters distinct from eachother, rather than Generic, you actually properly show the emotions in their actions and lack of actions, using the creative designs you made to your advantage.
I'm a big fan of this. It feels unique, like it's got more than just angst and common, over-used themes. Good job.

I absolutely love the art style and way you drew the characters! My only real criticism is that Terry Jr is canonically black! Please draw him as a black man. Absolutely love the music paired with the art. Could watch this all day
This is a fair criticism, though he is popularly drawn by fanartists & the cover artist as black, his race is left purposefully ambiguous by the creators. I decided to depict him as white because I think portraying him as black falls into several negative stereotypes and because the one time he is described the player had defaulted to white. The dm & player have later said they like the headcanon of him being black, but still choose to omit describing his physical appearance. To me, this type of wishy washy representation of "as long as it makes you happy" and agreeing while not actually committing any definitive work for it is disingenuous, especially when the story itself purposely never addresses it and lets people assume whatever they want without having to expend any effort to it. This is something a lot of podcasts/audio dramas do that i really hate especially because the creatives behind it are almost always white and haven't given it any thought, liking it for the positive feedback from fans, but dont seriously consider how if a character is of a certain race how that effects the character's background and tropes to avoid with them in that context (Sorry to get on a soapbox). I absolutely understand where youre coming from, I hope you understand why I personally have interpreted terry jr as white

I don’t really think any of the characters are described in detail in the podcast itself (certain features will be mentioned like Glenn’s eyepatch, Henry’s bright blond hair, Samatha being tall and skinny, etc) but apart from character like Cern, barely any of the characters are described in detail. All we hear about Terrys look is he has blond hair (which could easily be bleached) and doesn’t look like Ron
And this genuinely might just be me missing something but I’m not sure how Terry being black would be putting him in stereotypes? His father is gone but that’s due to him passing away, not leaving. He’s only really angry and upset at the very beginning of the podcast specifically because Ron is an idiot and he’s 12-13 so he doesn’t play into any “angry black man” stereotypes (especially as an adult where he’s extremely gentle and nervous), him and his mother aren’t shown as having financial struggles, so I assume I’m missing something because I don’t see how Terry being black would be playing into anything?
I totally get how characters not being distinctly stated in the show as marginalized can be frustrating but all cannon art of Terry tied to dndads specifically shows terry as black.
If I’m missing anything please let me know but I don’t see how they’re being wishy washy with terry being black when all art of him by the creators is him being black
@@goblinguy3103 The alright poster is drawn by a fanartist, with the fanartists own interpretation of these characters, similarly to the beach dads poster & the o.a.k poster being drawn by other fanartists with their own interpretations, these are all works and interpretations from the fanartists and not the actual creators of the show because the creators purposefully don't want to give these characters definitive designs. I would’ve considered Alex Moores cover art as official given they’re the official cover artist for this show, except and especially w/ the s2 cover, when linc has been drawn as white by other fanartists the creators of the show have liked, replied, and featured these fanarts (something theyve done with terry being drawn as white as well). None of the creators of this show mind deviations from the cover art and actively encourage it so ultimately the cover arts are also the artists own interpretation. Even if the commissioned art for their characters for them to sell depicts characters as people of color that's not how it's actually played out in actual the content of the story.
Terry jr, like you said, starts off as an angry kid, then has to become the mature one in the relationship and turns into Rons emotional crutch. A black person being angry is a negative stereotype that has depicted black people of all ages and neither is it exclusive to gender. Additionally, black kids are very often subject to adultification bias, where theyre treated by adults as more mature than they actually are. Ron and terry's relationship to me is already really messed up, but under the gaze of a black kid taking care of his white dad is really insensitive at best. Samantha & terry both being black and both being incredibly emotionally intelligent just to support ron would also be a horrible trope and stereotype. (Ron initially being racist in the first episode is also in extra poor taste if his step son is black. Ron decapitating terry senior is extra fucked if terry senior is black.) These being the only roles he has in s1, especially with how beth may had defaulted to her imagining of him as white, made me choose to interpret him as white despite the fanarts ive seen. In s2, i would especially find it wrong for me to interpret him as black given how he violently died getting shot in the head and hes the only dad to get killed.
This podcast consists of 3 white people (will campos being latino), freddie wong whos chinese, and anthony burch whos thai wasian. Because their characters are them just playing aspects of themselves, freddie wong's characters have always mentioned being chinese as a cultural background, will campos makes an effort to include his hispanic heritage to his characters and the characters associated with him and in s3 Anthony burches character immediately mentions his thai background. It isnt hard for them to include cultural diversity and representation, so they’ve never shied away from mentioning race, except from characters they benefit from the ambiguity. I dont think the crew who misuses AAVE and considers it "gen z slang", who makes a racist joke about africa in the agatha spin off, who hasnt had black creatives ever be involved, who didnt consider terry jr could be black until they saw fanart is the place that could give proper black representation in the first place especially when they werent even considering it
"Terry Jr is canonically black" Actually not necessarily. As the Dads have made it clear that fans have immense artistic liberties. And Terry was originally (Via Beth's description in one of the early episodes) a blonde haired white boy. And was only made black through Fan art.
I also personally see him as Mixed race black, but the artistic vision in this animation far outweighs any differences in views.
