I am old now, but I did get to see "The Gallant Hours" in the theaters in 1960 Along with my father and older brother. Dad died in 1967 August 20 and my brother died Feb 9, 2020, The Second World War was much closer to us then than it is now.

If we forget what the greatest generation did then we will be lost - but if we can remember them and what they did for us then we will find the strength that we need - in our dark days and this world will be made a better place. My Dad was a British Royal Navy officer in WWII, first helping deliver lend-lease ships from Brooklyn and Bayonne Navy Yarts up to Halifax N.S., then mostly aboard escourt carriers with Atlantic convoys.
I play this and think of him whenever I visit the shore.
He left his London home at 16 to join the Merchant Service, and the rest is history. Thanks to him, I have his sea blue eyes and salt water in my veins.

    The lyrics:
I knew a lad who went to sea and left the shore behind him.
I knew him well the lad was me and now I cannot find him.
Away, away, away he went, in deep and salty water.
His girl she waited years for him. She was his neighbor's daughter
Away, away, away he went and left the shore behind him.
I knew him well the lad was me and now I cannot find him.
    Away, away, away he went
Away he went and now I cannot find him.
The rolling sea he would embrace, the rolling sea hath took him.
And passed him on a lonely beach, the roaring sea forsook him.
    ~
Haunting. Perhaps the greatest sea shanty ever written.

Here's some trivia that may interest you: one of the actors the opening credits mention is named "Ward Costello." He played "Captain Black," who is the officer left-over from Admiral Ghormley's staff. If you look further down in the credits, you'll find that Ward Costello also wrote the words and music for the opening theme.

This is a magnificent movie. I’ve seen it several times and just about to watch it again. I love these older movies as they’re so powerful. Great acting & writing has been replaced these days with ‘computer graphics’ and sensationalism. They trade off either on the writing of the script or the Actors’ performance. These movies, actors and writers are a part of the American story., our history. Today, they tend to rely on those gimmicks more often than not. Movies of this quality are few and far between. I love movies that are retelling a story with griping accuracy & realism as this one. A lot of brave people lost their lives during WW2. I’d love to see more of these movies being shown. It’s a shame we don’t have a designated channel showing these important accounts. If we had more accurately told, like this one, the kids today would watch, learn & enjoy the process. Tom Brokaw was right when he so eloquently labeled them, ‘The Greatest Generation’! . 🌈🙏🇺🇸

"Gallent Hours" Was a good movie, about a good Admiral, Halsey.
He was his own worse enemy. But he had a better quality about himself. He Loved all those who served under him. "He spoke his Mind, because he didn't want to lose it". He faught the enemy, with what our Country gave him.
    He won battles.
What brought him down were the "Two Typhoon's" he had to deal with. With No Help, from the Navy's Meteorological Division, at that time. Nimitz had to deal with Washington, DC's Politicians, who were clueless.
Halsey, should be remembered as one, of our "Greatest Generation's" Sailor/Aviators, who went off to Sea
to help fight for our freedoms.
