    Blue Velvet is a cover! It was originally sang by Tony Bennett and I find it interesting that Lana chose to cover it because it gives the name to David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), a very elegant, mysterious, dark and american movie and I think Lana probably loves it because the whole Born to Die/Paradise feels just like this film. Give it a watch if you can, Lynch is one of the best american filmmakers of all time.

    Yayo is Spanish slang for cocaine. I think Lana uses this as she used to spend a lot of time in Florida, mainly in Miami where there's lots of Spanish speakers. You can hear that even in recent concerts like Lollapalooza in Brazil she switched into a more malibu accent. That's why they call her Lanita. Hope this helped!

    I cannot say with more gusto that when it was released this EP CHANGED my life at the time. My entire friend group was obsessed with it, we all had "our" songs and we would just play it in the background when we'd sneak out at night to go to the park and drink the most rancid booze available to us at like 16. It was great. I never had more fun puking my brains out and being depressed on a swing than I did during this era of Lana lmao

Which looking back it's kinda shady of my friends for associating it with me given the subject matter but hey what can ya do lmao and I really had to think about this, because for me this is a zero skip piece of art, I'd say my most revisited tracks are Body Electric, Blue Velvet and (honestly) Bel Air. I feel like no one talks about Bel Air enough. (Also American is my least favourite on this EP too don't worry I'm totally with you)

      @@astridtheterribleride and bel air are some of my favorite lana tracks.
      from this era, my favorites are btd title track, without you, ride, bel air. but i think it’s such an iconic era for lana that just all of it sticks w u and it holds up so well today.
      ultraviolence is easily my fav lana album and album in general of all time tho. followed by ocean blvd just bc it’s so personal and u see right into her, which makes her more relatable and close to u than ever

    • @astridtheterrible
      @astridtheterrible Před 11 měsíci +3

      @@saggygreentbag I know this term is overused but Ride + the music video was a cultural reset. Music artists have always been doing the "sad and actually kinda spooky" thing forever but I feel like for the generation that were adolescents when this came out it made it "cool" and that's also why I'm desperado for a Lana del Ray AKA Lizzy Grant reaction as well (tho I have no idea where to find it legally I haven't checked lmao) Cuz some of Lana's earlier stuff prior to BTD is actually really haunting in a more sinister way. Put Me in a Movie? Mermaid Motel? For K Part 2? Iconic. Ultraviolence has the perfect blend of that weird scary pre-Lana Lana and the west coast vibes(tm) Lana. Love that album I'm so excited for the reaction. (My favourite still is Honeymoon though if anyone cares which I know is another controversial opinion)

      @@astridtheterrible 1. How DARE you be so interesting?
      2. I remember the mixed reaction Honeymoon got (I was part of that myself). I think that was because we were all expecting a Born To Die part 2 and what we got was... a weird mix of jazz and trap? What? It felt confusing at the time, but looking back we can appreciate the overarching themes of voyeurism and fame and the fact it was an instrumental step in Lana exploring new sounds. I also like how at points it's Lana at her lowest, but it also hints at a more hopeful perspective like she went on to explore from Lust For Life onwards. Also also, some of her best bridges ever. Like, Honeymoon, Blackest Day, Salvatore, Terrence? Hello?

    I would definitely recommend watching her short film Tropico that covers songs like Body Electric, Gods & Monsters and Bel Air, absolutely amazing and cinematic with spoken parts 💕 I believe Tropico will close Born to die: Paradise Edition era in some way before you move to Ultraviolence.
    Also other recommendations that maybe you would like to do in next CZcams video:
    Ride music video
    Blue velvet (has a music video that was made for the H&M commercial, just a little fact)
    Tropico trilogy (the the essence of Paradise album)
    Yayo - Lana created a little video for this song before she was famous, maybe not for the reaction but definitely a nice thing to see how she grew as an artist.
    Some live performances:
    iTunes 2012 Body Electric
    Cola live performance in Olympia, Paris
    Yayo's live performance in Moscow in 2016 and compare her old live Yayo from 2008 in NYC

    This EP is mainly about her past boyfriend who died and she’s trying to cope with it, through sex and partying. Many of the songs have references to heaven/paradise, as he is there and she wishes she was there as well with him. Bel Air as a place is thought of by Lana as somewhere beautiful and glamorous and heavenly, and is used somewhat as a placeholder for Heaven, but also is literal and shows her trying to leave behind her past lover and move to LA. Yayo is pretty close to what you said - though it seems happy and she’s talking about getting married and having fun with him but the “Hello heaven,” verse shows that this is all just dreaming about what she could’ve had. It’s a really devastating album.

    I love your reaction, it's good to see that you're honest. Btw, the Paradise Era has a lot of videos, the essentials are Ride and Tropico (a 27 minute short film with the songs Gods & Monster, Body Electric and Bel Air). I think that those two videos are great to know the exact feeling she's putting into the album. Others videos are Burning Desire and Blue Velvet (it's a commercial, still a music video tho, so it's not on her channel, but it's on youtube).

  • @BoogieW_
    @BoogieW_ Před 11 měsíci +3

    its not a music video but a live performance of ride. in my opinion its one of her best live performances, it feels so raw and personal. the video is titled "Lana Del Rey- Ride (live on Langs de Leeuw HD)"

    also on american horror story theres a cover of gods and monsters, its truely haunting you should definitely give it a listen! (im also not at that part at the video yet lol but it you didnt realise the songs about la, at the beggining the murmering is 'LA' repeated)

  • @Alex-qe7bt
    @Alex-qe7bt Před 11 měsíci +2

    okay im like halfway through yayo so im not sure if you realise half of this lol but yayo is slang for cocaine, she also delivers the song like this to indicate intoxication. She released an ep called aka lizzy grant before her official first album under 'lana del rey', and yayo was actually one of these songs so i find it very interesting that she decided to release it again! Yayo and gods and monsters are definitely my favourites from this ep

    Yup girl. Harvey is the one you're thinking about. She doesn't sing this song anymore and you'll probably find more about this in her song "Fucked my way up to the top"

      I think it's a shame that POS spoiled Cola for her as it's a great song. I'm not sure there's any direct evidence that the other song you mention has anything to do with him though as it doesn't mention him. It's a sarcastic song. And if there is any specific gossip about it, I probably don't want to know.

    i dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but i have been a huge lana stan since the beginning, and as she was putting out the paradise edition she really was framing this as her last music project because she's 'sung everything that she needs to sing' so this was so emotional when it came out but then she obviously kept going
