Today I talk about the reasons I think duel masters failed outside of Japan and the landscape of other card games during that time. It most definitely was a different era compared to how we're flooded with other card games now.

Im Filipino and before I came to Canada, we used to play Duel Masters in the Philippines and was popular when if ran. Hell I even owned a gameboy game of the tcg and I loved it. To this day I still keep my cards and I still play the gameboy games. Its underrated imo.

Lucky you. I only have one friend I can only sometimes play older pokemon and yugioh formats. I can only play Duel Masters on the GBA video games.

I remember when Duel Masters was here in the US back in 2004. I really liked the game and the anime show. Yeah, people did see it as a Yu-Gi-Oh! Clone here in the US. One game I enjoy and still play today is Shadowverse. Shadowverse is practically a Magic The Gathering Clone.

I never heard of it but I hear Magic the Gathering has a lot of problems now too. Even I heard what they pulled with their 30th anniversary product.

I remember that duel masters was quite big where I lived back then. Hell, you could buy cards around almost every corner. The thing is that they were mostly counterfeits. So most people that played didn't even had the chance to see an original card, since they were much more expensive and sold in just a few shops. I think that's why DM failed in Europe.

For my country neither originals or fake cards were around. We had a lot of fake yugioh and pokemon cards though further showing that those games were just a much bigger phenomenon on any level.

Also pretty sure magic was always teh big dog 100% of the time

It's the original tcg no doubt, but Yugioh overtook it in no time claiming multiple guiness records. It might a joke today in terms of healthy formats but it was the hottest in its time. Pokemon was smaller after the first global hype was over but grew from there and I'd say currently is bigger than Magic for sure.

@@SaberWolf94 Here's thing thing about it.... I remember hearing in japan MTG never really broke #1 till like war of the spark thanks to their japanese exclusive planeswalker arts. Which could possibly explain why mtg does more anime alt arts these days.
Clearly it was a bigger hit with the japanese audience than it was with the american ones.
Also I saw that not only was yugioh inspired largely by MTG but also the japanese only TCG mon colle or monster collection.

@@NekoValtz At the end of the Magic the Gathering did come first so it wouldn't be inconceivable.

Big shame it died, at least at my locals we have a small playerbase still for the game

I'm not surprised to hear that :) I still think it's one of the best card games out there. In a very werid way the fact that we only got 12 sets outside of Japan puts it in a sweet spot in my opinion that it didn't get ruined like yugioh. Fixed card pool where things don't get out of hand.

I heard that Wizards of the Coast didn't want Duel Masters to compete with MTG so they killed it.

    • @SaberWolf94
      @SaberWolf94  Před rokem +1

I don't believe that since I know the game wasn't doing well. No way they'd discontinue it if it was making tons of money and progressing to compete with yugioh.

They got the rights to Duel Masters to compete with yu-gi-oh, but realized they could never compete, so they basically just gave up

I wish when they try bringing dual Masters back I wish they brought back the original duel Master game not this kaijudo and the anime for kaijudo was bad

Ironically duel masters was only created because they didn’t want magic the gathering in the anime.
