  • How to care for #olive #trees, a comprehensive guide. Including #pruning advice. #europaolive
    Horticultural Grit: amzn.to/45zSf8L
    1. Repot them every couple of years or so for vigour. The old #compost will be spent of necessary nutrients.
    2. Add extra #drainage, think about their native climate, dry, arid well drained earth. Add horticultural grit. They do not like wet, soggy roots. I put #crocks and gravel at the bottom of the pot to help excess water get away from the roots..
    3. Pots are a limited resource and the plants need food, so feed them regularly, I use a tomato food.
    4. Whilst they don't like wet soggy #roots they do need plenty of water. Give them a good soaking every week or two weeks depending on the conditions. But do let them dry out between soakings. Do not let them stay wet over winter they hate cold and wet together.
    5. Remember they produce #flowers and therefore fruit on one year old growth, so if you want fruit your pruning needs to leave some one year old growth. They never flower on the same place twice.
    6. Flowers and growth will only develop where there is good light. Which is why people often #prune them into an open vase shape. If you a not worried about fruit you can make a topiary ball.
    7. They do need a couple of months of cold weather over winter to make the flower/fruit buds set. 2 months under 10 degrees. They are reasonably hardy even in the UK down to -8 or -9.
    8. They are self fertile. They are wind #pollinated, put them where there is a breeze.
    9. Don't feed late summer. This allows that year's new growth to harden off and also discourages new tender growth just before the damaging winter weather.
    10. Mulch or top-dress your pots to retain moisture, supress weeds and feed/enrich the soil.

    Such wonderful and informative videos. I have done exactly as you've advised with my olive tree, cut it right back and after about 4 months I'm beginning to see new shoots which I am thrilled about. The only thing is, the shoots only seem to be on one side of the plant, do you think the other side will catch up? I have checked and the branches have green running through them, so still alive.
    Thank you again for such fab videos 👍

    Hi Mark, I know this works because I copied you earlier this year. At first, I thought that I had cut back to much and I thought that I had killed it. After a little while new shoots grow and my Olive tree looks better than ever. Thank Mark. 😊

    The dog was just letting you know how great the trees look! I love finding a plant or tree on clearance, half dead, and growing it into something nice! Sometimes it works for me, sometimes not. But worth a go! As usual very educational video. Thanks!

    Thank you for all your olive tree videos. I just bought my first olive tree which will live in a pot, so these are very informative. Lovely trees.

    Hi Mark, I have an Olive tree I planted in the garden 9 years ago. Having watched and subscribed to your channel, other than a couple of light pruning efforts I realise now I have neglected the Olive Tree. It has become very 'woody' and tall with most leaves high up to one side of the tree. I desparately want to recover it but really don't know where to start. It has reached approx. 4 metres in height. If possible, any guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Rob.

    Hi Mark. Great content and information, though I`ve left it too late to prune and repot this year. How do the propagation go on the 6 hardwood cuttings you took in April please?

    Hi Mark! About a year ago we had a little chat about my new olive tree and my intention for it to live inside. I did give up on that, and had it outside until this winter, when I thought it was miserable and brought it in.
    When I brought it in, it dried out and lost all its leaves (this was early December) and I did cut some of the branches because I was desperate to see if it was still alive. It turns out some were, some not, so I decided to only go halfway and wait until Spring to go all the way in.
    Now it's done something very bizarre, where it picked two branches and grew massively, I am talking 30 cm each branch, and it is not strong enough to sustain them so they're bending down. I wish I could attach a picture for you to see. Very very strange!
    Honestly I am not even sure I know what to ask, haha! I just thought I'd tell you this.

      Well it's great news that it is still growing 😊 perhaps a little further into the year cut those two back to redress the balance? Mark

    Hi mark! Can I ask, what would you recommend for other olive issues, for example coming out of winter and leaves being blotchy etc - I read up about peacock spot and fungus but not sure what is best or if this is just normal coming out of winter and not actually an issue

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi there. If you have identified a specific pest or problem with certainty I would say look up the appropriate remedy. However, my experience is that Olives like many plants will find the cold season stressful but will recover as part of there normal cycle and generally all it takes is proper care when we return to the growing season and they will rejuvenate. I top dress mine early spring and give a light prune. Best wishes. Mark

    Mark, I too have just rescued an olive tree from Aldi, it's not looking too bad but I'm wondering if it's too late to repot it or should I wait for the spring?

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před 8 měsíci

      hi Jacqueline, I think it's borderline. If it was mine I'd wait, store it in a cool sheltered part of the garden, don't let it dry out but don't over water, it should go dormant over winter then you can perform this operation come spring time. i suspect we're in for some cold days shortly which won't be beneficial for root growth if it's repotted. mark

    I've been wrapping my olive bonsai in horticultural fleece at night in winter and I also wrap the bowl it's in with bubble wrap. But . . . do I need to do all that? Will a frost or temps dipping below 0 C harm it? Really appreciate your opinion! (Btw, I don't prefer bonsai but I rescued this tree when someone put it out on the curb).

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK
      @MarksHouseandGardenUK  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi. I suspect it's not absolutely necessary, but if you can do it why not? It would be a shame to lose it. If it's always worked I would continue

      Hi there. Thank you. I just used a basic general purpose compost from a local shop with added slow release. I also add grit or perlite for drainage. Draining is the important thing in my opinion. Thank you for watching. Mark

    I also found one at Aldi for about the same price and poor condition as well. It is about 1/3 the sz of yours. Also they topped it off way low so if I cut back, it will really be tiny standard. When would it be too late for a tight pruning😢?

    • @MarksHouseandGardenUK

      Hi Angie. I would hold off now personally until spring when the sap starts rising again. Let it rest through the winter then prune mid to late spring. Mark

      Excellent video Mark, we bought a 2 foot Olive tree 10 years ago from Tesco for £10, we eventually planted it in our garden in Bury, South facing, we feed it twice a year and leave it unpruned. Its now 8ft tall and looking superb. Weve now planted another and looks brilliant with our musa basjoo and fatsias. Keep up the great work!
