Great review! I think its important to talk a bit more about the price, with phones coming out with more features but are probably double the price. This phone is for people that want a lot of features for that aggresive Xiaomi price tag. Another discussion point could be, how does this device place in the market? Are they competing with oneplus or honor? Are they seperating themselves with the extremely low pricing? Could you also confirm whether or not this device has double tap to wake? Thanks for the content, keep up the good work!
@@love4thegame877 Yea bro he mentions itonly once or twice the good price. But S10+ costs over double the price and missing the point. It undercuts ever manufacturer until the Poco f2. But F2 will not beat Mi 9 Xiaomi cannot undercut themselves.

Xiaomi could've killed the market with a headphone jack, a 3700 mAh battery, OIS and stereo speakers.
You can't shove OIS in that 48mp sensor that's just a hardware limitation that Sony had to deal with.

You can use Mi drop as FTP for moving some data from phone to PC. If your router has good speed (5hgz preferly), the transfer is so fast and it doesnt affects battery stats. Just a suggest for the future!

The SD855 is probably a big step up from the 820 in my LG V20, but the phone lacks a few features to win me over and isn't sold in the States. Would love to get a Mi phone someday though, or their Mi Pad 4 Plus to replace my tablet.

Only double tap to wake and not to sleep. The notification light is more a status light. It's not useful at all. I don't own the Oneplus 6T sorry.

07:27 - This is why I think REAR mounted is better - there's also a bit of tactile feedback when "finding" it. Not to mention screen protectors causing grief. Thanks for one of the only objective reviews on the MI9. Everyone else thus far is pure drool and praise. I think Xiaomi missed the boat on this model.

@Normano I don't use screen protectors either. But many people do, statistically. Ever review Ive seen they comment on missing the sensor. Who cares if it's fast if it takes multiple tries to find the spot.. even in the dark. A rear sensor is easy to work out phone orientations, with a screen sensor... It's hit and miss

Great thorough review. Only drawback to me is the notch. I might buy this or the Mi Mix 3S around august when prices have dropped below $450 and hopefully the Pixel Experience and GCam ports are ready, but even at the current $530 pricing it's a great deal.
Xiaomi's best design is the Mix 2/2s i think, unless you need the best selfie camera of course.

Its geekbench multi core is like 10.980 . But some runs on geekbench have some bugs so it doesn't show its true score.

Hey Chris, i stuck between S9+ and Mi 9, my main concerns are photo and video quality of both main and selfie sensors, and sound quality of both speakers and headphones. Mi 9 will be a little more expensive than S9+ in Turkey when it is launched so which do you recommend as a multimedia device? Mi 9 or S9+? I think i will choose S9+ considering camera and soundwise but i also care about your opinion :)
S9+ But this is a great phone. However the cameras video and photos are better I feel. Also much better audio.
Samsung make _QUALITY_ devices while Xiaomi make good but cheap devices. I'd go with the S9+
Think about longevity, USB 3.1 with video output, headphone jack, stable WiFi coverage and speed, 3rd party support and quality of every internal component.

Thank you for your review. Could you try the explorer version? It has f1.47 instead of f1.75 of this version, and 7 lens instead of 6. Night picture should be better.
yes, Explorer version looks like quite something on paper, though overkill with 12GB RAM, problem so far only Chinese version available... so you won't have all 4G LTE bands... (bad for outside Asia: EU and US need more/other bands), so better wait for Global version unless you never leave Asia ;)
Retailers are selling them for 1000 yuan more in my country , waiting for official release ! Hope to get a hold of this phone soon enough

Apart from the lack of USB 3/video out (which would be a major plus for me - I regularly use my company Samsung handset with my type C dock) and the lack of OIS (which I think is a fairly big ommission, it's one of the things I really like about the MI 8) it looks like a great handset! Glad they finally seem to have started including Widevine L1. It seems a pretty good offering and decent value for money. Software, yeah..... needs some work (as does the MI 8, the ROM was pretty much garbage for 6 months after the MI 8 came out), but looks like a decent improvement over the last phone.
p.s. Great video - covers everything that I'd like to know about. :)

• How does the speaker compare to your S9+ is it good as?
• Can you please do another test using the Google camera app please?
Ported Google stock camera app is only going to seem marginally better than the stock app simply because the pixel series of phones have a proprietary chip inside which works alongside the app and hardware which gives such stunning results. The chip is called 'Pixel Visual Core'. It's never going to make a remarkable difference I'm afraid to say.
Google camera crashes on it all versions tested. S9+ speaker is better still I feel as it has two.
@@Techtablets try this version of the APK it's in the description. I've tried multiple gcam mods on my Mi Mix 3 and they crashed.

@@kpcassell419 wrong, the Pixel visual core is literally for handling a task that the main cores would normally do. I know this because I owned all Pixels and the visual core wasn't active during the early times of the Pixel 2. Both visual core and off produced the same image quality on the Pixel 2. I'm currently using a Pixel 3 and a Mi Mix 3. I can tell with certainty that the Mi Mix 3 is MILES better with the gcam mode and is practically good as the Pixel 3 but not actually beating it. It's actually very hard to tell unless you're Pixel peeping. But the point being is the gcam makes a better and significant difference.

I really liked it! About the hidden notification thing, I do know that on my Mi6 there was an option to make logos not appear in the notification bar. I wonder if it is just set this way by default and maybe we can change it in the settings since I can do it on the Mi6.
And it seems like the wireless charging on the mi 9 is not qi wireless charging.

I feel underwhelmed by cameras in phones so far in the 2019 generation. Xiaomi is no exception. OIS should be standard these days with handsets which cost upwards of £/€/$/400. I know Xiaomi need to make cutbacks in order to keep the price sensible but I feel they make it in the wrong areas.
Let's hope the Pixel 4 does something amazing (or the Nokia Pureview).

Very tight choice. I have the same dilemma. Mi mix 3 may be notchless but the screen to body ratio is bigger on mi9.they dont have many differences, i d say it is a matter of taste, both are great.one thing i have to say though, is that the battery life on the mi9 is splendid, i definitely disagree with the video.It is one of the best yet and the 855 is a splendid battery saving chipset.i have the mi mix 2 with the 835 and from what i see from reviews it has more than 30% better battert
Also what is much more interesting - of all the reviews, you are the only one point out the notifications bug. So keep it up and don't let corpos pay you as other do. BTW how does it feel to be only one in the world doing real, not manufacturer paid, phone reviews?

Great review as always mate, what a decent phone. Gotta say though, isn't it a Teardrop notch. One plus and Oppo is more Waterdrop notch. Or I could be wrong - silly names for style of notches regardless anyway in the industry haha
Edit: sorry saw that Xiaomi released an update for Mi 9 that put the Waterdrop notch on it. Can see it change between the two in the shots in your video :)
Hey mate, yeah Xiaomi are getting there. Water drop or teardrop I agree silly names. Yes the notch change can be seen in the video. I did cover it but in the end pulled a few clips to stop the video being 25 minutes long!
Great stuff from Xiaomi again! One question: does the notification bar fill out close to the notch? I've been seeing on some phones that it doesn't. Design wise, the teardrop is more pleasing then the not ch, but if it doesn't use the extra space it's still not practical..

Yep, I was just going to point this out regarding his statement that you risk scratching the camera's glass even with the case on. No such chance as it has sapphire glass over cameras.

Scratches at level 8 with deeper grooves at level 9.
That is true for any sapphire glass. Anyway I think it's very hard to get level 8 of scratches on the camera's glass.
Jerry just tested the device. Looks like it's cheap sapphire (Apple style) that starts scratching at level 6. That is a shame...

I perfectly agree with your pros and cons but i also hate that there is no drawer and really don't like square icons!
You can install another Launcher like the pocophone one or Nova launcher, one if the best. Then install a theme to change the icons in Miui or an icon pack if you're using nova 😉

There is EIS stutter and jitter. I don't share publicly original files of video or photos anymore as others were using them as their own.
I like photo detail from telephoto than main camera.
Should have compared this to 1+6T instead of the S9. S9 is on a different territory. That display looks crisp. I like the whole package for the price. Worth it.

That sound from the mic during the recordings sounds horrible. It's crazy that they are still limiting it to 95kbit, it seriously even hurts my ears if I raise the volume a bit.
9:2 Chris , open settings - notifications & status bar and there allow show notification icons , so it's definitely not Rom problem , only you can't find and switch to on this setting :)

I don't choose the adverts, that's CZcams. Sorry about that. But I'm trying to get some back the 449 euros spent, I don't get free phones like other channels.

Fred Gadget you need to install the global Rom, you won’t be updated via OTA .... always purchase the global Rom versions of Xiaomi products...
