This is I how I used to be a beast at these games Mark, first of all you need to shoot faster and be quicker on the trigger, second of all, when you need to reload, you bring your left hand up, cover the front of the gun and pull trigger, wait till you see how much better you do.
I have a House of the Dead on Saturn too! Got it for my birthday. :D It cost me $100 on Amazon, but it was worth it. Came with everything, played it for hours. It remains my favorite game of all time. Good job reviewing it Mark / CGR!!

Virtua Cop and Time Crisis did that. But really, most games from the Saturn era can be considered classics by virtue of it being the first generation of 3D consoles, and this one is also the first entry in a still going series that's over 15 years old. The kind of locational damage you could see on the zombies was still a novel idea and something you couldn't easily do before with just sprites, and it was executed beautifully.
Personally I think that HOTD 2 is so overated and it unfairly outshines the original. Hell the original had tolerable voice acting and it was the scariest in my opinion. It may only be four levels but thats no excuse to never port it to newer consoles for 15 years. At least this is getting re-realeased on PSN soon. Finally this gets a long waited port to new gen consoles.
The light gun uses the CRT's retrace speed to distinguish between different enemies/white dots. Since LCDs refresh the whole screen at the same time, it's impossible to distinguish enemies...
It's very admirable and/or different to look at classic games like this and notice the little details that are commonly attributed to modern games (like enemies being target or feature graphical damage done to them, and having a multiple path, non-linear story). You really gain new respect for these classic titles, and feel less willing to give into excuses of modern development.
played this in the arcade and beat the final boss with only one token left, either the machine was kind of messed up or there were some parts that were made to just eat up tokens
Hint: that last boss's (the Magician's) weak spot is the *very dark spot on his left thigh (to YOUR right)*. Keep shooting that and the fireballs he throws at you.
I tried to use both guns in the arcade once and was harder to aim. I found the rapid fire with holding the gun in 1 hand while you use the pointer of the 2nd hand to rapidly hit the trigger quite nice and works in lots of other light-gun games (as long as the weapon isn't automatic by default). Each their own I guess.
Glad to see that there is finally a review for this gem! Twas the reason I bought my Saturn a decade ago, however I had to settle for the Japanese version as the US release is much too pricey.
My local arcade had a HOTD machine, and I remember being stunned by the graphics back in the day. The LOADLOADLOADLOAD! sounds were all you could hear back then inside the place, and now they've been burned in my subconscious.

yeh man it is! i used to have a copy when i had my old ps and was always gutted that i sold it on and wanted a copy again..managed to find a playstation at a carboot sale (fleamarket) and realised it was chipped/modded when i opened up the console and there was a cdr copy of tony hawks 3 inside..anyway,even though i love games i am a total technophobe but was pleased as punch when i worked out how to sort out a copy of elemental gearbolt again! the music,atmosphere and gcon vibes are sweet!!
Hey Mark hows that saturn holding up? It's been over two years since I've seen it. Thanks for showing it. I didn't think the RCA A/V mod I did on the battery door would hold up.
@Superawesomegametime interesting question. It could be that the refresh rate is fast 100hz+ ? And hes recording at 30fps but because the refresh rate is so high you cant see it?
Light guns just don't work properly on flat screens. Probably cause they were made considering the curvature all CRT screens had back in the day. That's the reason I have two TVs in my room :P
this is probably a stupid question im sure but how come when he records video on an old tv, there arent any lines going up/down? is it the type of old tv or the camera he's using?
How should I know? I'm not really that bothered about anybody else not buying because I got to play on the fantastic games that's the Saturn had to offer and many other people didn't which resulted in them missing out while I have cherished memories of it's classic games.
Have you reviewed Zombie Revenge? It was originally being developed as a House of the Dead spin-off. It uses the same music and sound effects. It's a pretty fun Dreamcast game. Not as good as House of the Dead, but fun.

any one know how to reset the aim on those arcade machines I'm sick of being scammed, putting my money in to find the aim if off by a stupid amount...if they work at all.
Why doesn't Sony/Microsoft release the Konami Justifier and the spas 12 shotgun from The House of The Dead 3 arcade machine for use these days? I'd buy those two in a heartbeat.
Doesn't using the gun that close to the screen make it more difficult to hit many enemies quickly? You have to move the gun far more than if you are from a distance. Anyway, great game of course as the whole series is.
i remember when this came out it got average reviews at best cos of the framerate and bad textures but it looks fun tho.it was rushed to release cos the saturn was on its last legs.

I have the Japanese Version and the action replay won't lt me use the light gun. The Action replay glitchs out when you try to use it with the Light gun. and if you try to plug it in at the start screen it won't respond. Has any one had this problem before?
I beat this game at the arcade with a smelly, twenty-something dude from beginning to end; I was probably 13. One of my greatest memories in gaming.

Yep or buy the physical copy on PC and they have 2&3 on the wii which works we'll with the remote and ps3 move works well with the 4th game
It was a rushed port like Virtua Fighter.
I like going to the arcade machine and paying $1.50 to dual wield the guns for more zombie killing action its a nice feeling

The lines are because the camera's framerate isn't synced with the TV's. You can get rid of the lines if your camera can record at 60 fps.

AAKPROD no the game was actually all skill based. u could beat it on one credit if you are good enough

Was the stunner always orange in the US? In the UK mine was blue! The flash every time you shoot totally gives you headaches though lol

I have this for my Saturn along with two Sega guns. Also I have the Arcade version on Model 2 emulator configured with Aimtraks 😁

House of the Dead 2 and 3 are on the Wii not the first one. The first one is only on Saturn, PC and Arcade.
I barely managed to finish the game and I was with the pc version with a mouse. The difficulty is crushing.
I LOVE the original HotD and it's actually easy for me, the HotD 3 seems like the longest honestly while the 4th installment is the shortest.
What special TV you need to play it? i didn't really hear it..
The Dreamcast's japanese debut was 1998...

You can change the blood color in the game via a cheat but not in the Japanese version
