- On July 7, 2016, I drove up from Ocean City, New Jersey to attend a New York art opening. It was 94 degrees, festive, and packed with hundreds of people who came to see some very provocative images by one of America’s leading figurative painters, Bo Bartlett.
In this film, I wanted to find out how people interpret and react to Bo’s powerful yet enigmatic artworks. I talked to a number of people including family members, models, artists, and writers to try to come up with an answer to the question, “What do Bo’s paintings mean?”
John, your films are always a delight. You have a knack for asking all the right questions!
Absolutely stunning work - impeccable technique and phenomenal composition, profound in their exposition of truly meaningful ideas - work for the ages. What a privilege to have been there - deeply moved.
Thanks Pippa!
John, have followed your films for several years and have probably seen them all, they are art in themselves. This film, as well as Bo's work, was fantastic. Keep up the wonderful work.
Thanks so much for a wonderfully encouraging comment!!!
I am in awe! Thank you for showing us Master
Bo Bartlett's artwork.
John, you have asked the same question that I have asked so many times while looking at Bo Bartlett's wonderful paintings. I loved hearing the models, too. Just wonderful!
Superb video. Everything just spot on.
Incredible films you make.. when I develop just a bit more it would be fantastic to find someone like you to document some of the pieces.
I might say eisegesis, but the guy can rightfully be called a painter, and a good one.
Omg
they are and they are not...I like and not so...have a hard time in the fact that I do like some...but feel guilty doing so....hmmm
I think that is what is so compelling about them!
*"Man with Shotgun" is nothing more than a twisted obsession of Oswald as 'Everyman'*
*The narrative I hear of 'What the painting means' are the words of a self-obsessed dolt that 'sees all' thru the eyes of a narcissist with a
'self-importance' fixation..."If I have a gun, I'm equal to or better than anyone else!"*
A technician with a pedestrian vision. "... and hopes that the south shall rise again." WHAT!? Yeah, lets bring back slavery. Norman Rockwell already painted these, but, like the art scene in general, the unexceptional (with few exceptions) rise to the top. Let's not make our audience think.
