In my opinion, the song is so emotional because of his voice and the imagery from his life. You can hear it in the way that his voice has aged and the way he emphasizes the lyrics - this is a dying old man who is looking back at his life and feeling regret. It may be the purest expression of regret that I have ever heard.

I'm an old man haunted by the regrets and failures of my life, so this song really resonates with me. I have come to realise, like you, that pretty much the only thing that actually matters is how you've interacted with the people around you. In death we leave nothing of true value - only the memories of those we've touched through our words and deeds. That understanding has comforted me, and I think it's made me a better and more thoughtful person. Don't give up friend, the world needs good people. I wish you well Anton, and I wish you peace in your heart.

I think the reason you reacted emotionally to this without having something you can hold up and say, this is why, it's because you have empathy. This song is gut wrenching, and you, as a fellow human being, can empathize and understand, and by that, you can put yourself in their shoes, and you feel that pain in your core. That's how I feel anyway. Despite everything in our life, class, race, background... we're all humans, and we all know what pain feels like.

I am always amazed at the honesty that this video elicits from people.
Johnny Cash did a brutally-honest and vulnerable performance, then an amazingly-talented videographer assembled a last minute video that carried the message even further. It's a miracle that Johnny heard about this song and found something in it that resonated for him. It's a miracle the video was made at all. And it's so honest, that those who see this are stripped of the insulation that hides their vulnerabilities.
The song was recorded in 2002, released in March of 2003. June Carter Cash passed in May 2003, barely 2 months later. And Johnny, who did not believe he could exist without her, he left us in September 2003. This was the last song he recorded, and what a legacy.

You ask my thoughts on the song? "I hurt myself today / To see if I still feel." The inability to feel ANYTHING. Even the feeling of pain would remind him that he is still alive. The song is about regret for the pain he has caused others, not for the lack of accomplishment in his own life. What he has become is a source of pain to those closest to him, the ones who loved and cared about him. He knows that. And as much as he wishes things to have been different, it is what it is. "You are someone else. / I am still right here." And that is no comfort.

I'm an old lady (74 years old...yeah, I know, I'm older than dirt) and I literally cannot remember a time when Johnny Cash was not a presence in my house. Three of my four older brothers played the guitar and sang (though not professionally) and they loved singing Johnny Cash songs. If I had not liked Johnny Cash it might have been difficult for me to have grown up with constantly hearing Cash songs, either on his records being played by my brothers or by them actually doing his songs. When I started learning more about the character and principles of Johnny Cash I started loving him almost like another brother. I never met him and of course he wouldn't know me from Adam but I felt like I KNEW him. The first time I saw this video I cried like a baby because it was almost like watching a brother say goodbye.
When I learned the song was a cover of a NIN song I will confess that I had never heard the song by them. In fact. I'm not sure I had ever even heard of NIN. I am a died-in-the-wool COUNTRY fan and I didn't know about NIN but I decided to listen to "Hurt" by them first and THEN watch Johnny Cash's cover of the song. It could very well be my age but I could not understand half of the lyrics when I listened to it by NIN. When I heard Cash's cover I could very clearly understand every word and I got terribly emotional. I still get emotional every time I see it even though I have seen it over and over and over. When I heard you "hoping" that you would have a positive response because you didn't want to disappoint the person who recommended this to you, I had to smile. I was thinking. "Just wait! Believe me, you don't need to worry about whether you will like this song." I was very happy to see you react much the way I did the first time I heard it. I would hope that you would decide that if THIS song is so special just MAYBE there are OTHER Cash songs that are worth a listen. If you do decide to react to more of his songs, I think listening to "Here Comes That Rainbow Again" or "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (both of them written by Kris Kristofferson, who is as good with words as just about any songwriter I know) or for a look at his songs that are a bit humorous, try "Boy Named Sue" or "The One of the Left is On the Right".
Excellent reaction! I was glad you mentioned the love in June's eyes when she looked at him. If you ever saw the two of them together and saw the way HE looked at her you would have seen that same look. "So much love there"? Oh yes. That's why no one was very surprised when he died such a short time after she died. Even though he had millions of fans who loved his music and he had children (he had four daughters with his first wife and one son with June) and grandchildren and siblings who loved him and who he loved in return, I would think that he was very eager to go be with June.

A very fitting song because Johnny Cash lived a rock star lifestyle but in the country music venue, tremendous highs, rock bottom lows, addiction, love, betrayal, career and personal struggles, a victim of his own personal code and the politics of the music world. A life filled with honors and regrets. A man who was in his own way as well known as Elvis Presley and just as misunderstood and who’s personal demons haunted him to the grave.

You sound like a really great person to know because I think you really do appreciate those fleeting connections and know that you'll remember them and they'll remember you... and then you go your separate ways and pass along that feeling to another and another and another. Johnny Cash sings all great songs really. As for what I want you to see it's Evanescence - My Immortal (it's a cliche now among reactors to react to it but I did not see it on your channel, it's one of my favourite songs).

Profound thoughts. "The only thing that matters in the end is people." And your observation about his wife, June. You finally put into words what I hadn't yet, despite how many times I have seen this video. Sounds like you have figured out a lot of things that most people never will.
Easily the most complete reaction I've seen.

My husband and my oldest daughter both struggle with anxiety and depression and as I get older I am starting to struggle with some of those challenges myself. I am really fighting to stay positive. But learning from good people like you absolutely is just the best medicine ❤

I truly hope you have realized that you are enough. Do your best to make other's lives better and leave the world a better place for your having been here. You will be loved for yourself. Stuff should be at the bottom of the things that are important. I'm not saying be poor, just don't make that the be all and end all. If you ever need someone to talk to, get hold of me. I'll be with you and you deserve it - you are a fine young man.

As someone who has struggles with drug addiction (Like Trent when he wrote this song) and someone who is a caregiver to a 98 year old elderly grandmother (Like Johnny) I have had to watch as her thought processes become more broken, the memory more fragmented...and it mirrors addiction, everything but the salvation of the drug fades away and becomes meaningless...man, life is tough...we do what we can...I especially hear you when everyone is happy and you are dying inside and just can't keep up the facade...take care dude, peace...

Thank you for your reaction, and thank you for being so honest. You are indeed a special and made the right choice, people. I do understand so well what you about anxiety and fear. And we try to fill that void just to understand how meaningless many of those things are. Time flies, so lets just be ourselves and do what gives us peace, even it's not something extraordinary that people will talk about. Just be ourselves. God bless.

I really appreciate your reaction to this song, and the following commentary. I know exactly what ya mean when you talk about depression so bad you can't even bring yourself to take a shower. That hit home with me. There truly is no substitute for human connection. All the money, fame, possessions and whatnot, they mean absolutely nothing. I'm glad your friend took the time to ask how you were, not just passively, but actually wanted to know how you were doing. It really makes a difference when someone really cares like that. Thank you again for the video, it's made me feel ok at a time where nothing is really going well. That's pretty priceless. Hope everyone is taking care of themselves and staying safe. 🖤

My dad always said growing old is not for wimps ...i miss all those who have passed in my life & was lucky i heard what my dad said...consumerism and acquiring stuff is crap...Elvis is a classic example but even he realised people are more important...in an interview early on he says you can have it all but what does it really mean...

Johnny struggled with addiction and later got grounded in his faith so it's a fitting remake for him. If you watch the movie "walk the line" it explains a lot of what he went through. One of the best reactions to this song so far imo.

It hurts from him because you see a great man, backed by his great woman...and the end of one's life. When you are at the end, what do you regret? What would you charge? What can you fix from your past...when you can't fix the past, not really. You can re-evaluate it but you can't change it. I was told that I had 5-12 years to live...and for 2 minutes I was in shock and then I felt like a lifetime of weight from all the expectations and whatnot just fell away. I had a bout of depression while I pulled my husband out of his deep depression over what I would die from. Then for the first time in my life, I made New Years resolutions for the things I want to do before I die (not a bucket list but my life goals list) on the Christmas day of 2018. Then it was February 2019 and I realized that my immunosuppressed ass wouldn't be doing anything until Covid-19 was made safer. Even now, people would attempt to rip my mask off because of a political issue rather than assuming I have to be more careful because I want to Live before I die. Someone said I was "amazing" because I was so level about it. You have to recognize that everyone is dying every day... but is anyone actually LIVING?!?
