  • What are EPIRB’s and PLB’s and which one is best suited for your needs?
    *I am not affiliated with GME or any company that supply this particular unit. I paid full price for this unit and am happy with the features and usability of this model*
    Today I talk about how these units work, which unit is best suited for 4WD’ers and caravaners, how to purchase, register, maintain, test, activate and use them.
    PLB and EPIRB’s can be the devices that save your life in the unlikely event of an emergency. It can be comforting to know exactly how these units work and what to expect if you ever need to activate them.
    My GME MT410G is the only form of emergency communication I carry in my 4WD for all my travels around Australia. My video explains why and briefly mentions why I choose not to carry satellite phones, cell boosters or personal trackers.

    Thanks for a great explanation. I researched these a few years ago when I was in the army and one thing I learnt was.... if you dispose of an old unit then ensure the battery is disconnected or completely discharged. Apparently they can be turned on when thrown out to rubbish dumps as the bulldozers spread out the rubbish. The monitoring centres have most rubbish dumps recorded so they know it's a possible dump activation, however, not all rubbish ends up in legal rubbish tips. Best option is return to a dealer for proper disposal.

      That's great to hear Jim! Thanks for the comments, I'm glad it can held add some thoughts to what you need.
      Although, I personally don't own a sat phone, I do believe there is a certain need for it in some individual cases, I just don't believe the average 4WD'er/Explorer would get the value out of a unit like that (unless they couldn't go without talking to people when on the road).
      Cheers, Nathan.

    We did go down the path of purchasing a sat phone few years back, like everything there are pros and cons but it suits our needs perfectly.
    Thanks

      Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍 for sure, there is still a market for sat phones depending on the user. I guess for the ‘average’ family toured, they might be a little costly.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    Great vid Nathan. A MUST have along with food and water. I reckon you make a good point about sat phones becoming obsolete as mobile phones become more wide ranging in use. 👍👍

      For sure and they are soo expensive for what they do too. I guess there is still a place for them in certain applications, just not for my setup and probably not for the average 4WD’er

    Well done, one of your best yet. It is amazing how mamy people do not understand the differences and what to expect when operating a PLB.
    The registration and also the regular update of contact details and putting your trip plans into it is important as well. Helps the team greatly. Also have a look at Kinetic Technology (KTI) who have a longer bat life and Australian Made

      Thanks Matt, appreciate that. For sure. I guess there are so many people entering this community of 4WD'ing and Exploring and just don't realise the vulnerability they can put themselves in if simple things don't work properly or serious injury occurs.
      Thanks for the tip of KTI, I'll check them out and see if they might be a good fit for a future purchase.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    G’day Nathan, very well done with the explanations. It’s still on the “to buy” list for me since the travel restrictions this year spoil the planned trip out of Victoria. I do belief there is still something todo for every PLB owner when going out on remoter trips. This is not a buy and forget. Updating personal and current trip infos should be done before leaving. And another thing you mentioned greatly important is: forget the common saying: “It will be alright!” Go prepared have your gear in order, I.e. grab bag, with handheld community equipments, PLB, dry emergency food and water what can last a few days. Cheers

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Holger. They sure are a great little piece of kit that helps give peace of mind when in remote destinations.
      For sure, registering trips details and making sure all contact information is up to date is definitely important to ensure a quick and effective response from emergency services.
      I think I might put together another video at a future date regarding emergency supplies I carry around in case of those worst case scenarios.
      Thanks again, Nathan.

    Nice informative video. What are your thoughts on HF radios? Particularly in regards to emergency communications.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks mate 👍
      Personally I’m not a fan of HF radios. They are expensive and mounting the antenna in an area without electrical interference can be frustrating.
      Personally, if I was going to spend that much money, I would probably buy a sat phone if I absolutely needed 2 way communication.
      It definitely depends on each persons independent needs.
      Hope that helps a bit.
      Cheers, Nathan.

    • @FloydBromley
      @FloydBromley Před 4 lety

      XploringOz thanks mate. The two-way coms does appeal to me, but it is very expensive either way. I do a lot of hiking so if I was going to go with one I’d probably go a sat phone, but I definitely need a PLB as well. The communal aspect of HF radios does appeal to me as well, but they will never be as versatile as a sat phone. Finally I’d have to agree with you on the idea that phone networks are expanding - especially in the next few years with the possibility of worldwide internet from the likes of Elon Musk.

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Před 4 lety +1

      For sure mate, emergency communication is critical and potentially life saving. Each person has their own requirements, but a simple PLB works a treat for me 👍
      I hope your able to to fond the best solution for your needs.
      In regards to phone networks, definitely. Tech improves so rapidly these days, it’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when.
