A Messy Family Tree | Matthew 1:1-17 | Gary Hamrick

None of us chose our family of origin. We are born into a family without any choice about that. Sometimes that proves to be a good thing, and sometimes not. There are tragic stories of alcoholic parents, abusive family members, abandonment, divorce, poverty, etc. Children grow up to become adults who sometimes repeat those patterns, and the cycle continues. But what if that cycle could be broken? What if a person could actually live life without their family history defining them? It’s possible in a relationship with Christ! He gives us a new heart, a new start, and a new identity. The heritage we receive is not as important as the legacy we leave. Jesus’ own family tree was littered with human failure, and yet it did not define Him. In addition, God used imperfect people in that family tree to accomplish His perfect purposes. Join us for today’s study from Matthew chapter 1.

I learn so much every time I listen to Gary Hamrick. He alone is an interesting speaker. So many ministers bore you to death. This man is so good at weaving modern and ancient customs in an engaging way that you can’t help but be compelled to listen!

    My personal Translation.
1 This is the family tree of the MESSIAH JESUS, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
    2 ¶ Abraham fathered Isaac...
...16 And Jacob fathered Joseph the guardian of Mary, which gave birth to JESUS, whom is
    entitled the Messiah. {John 6:42}
17 Thus all the generations, from Abraham to David, were fourteen generations. And from David
until they were captured into Babylon, fourteen generations. And after they were held captive in
Babylon unto CHRIST, are fourteen generations.
18 Now the genesis of CHRIST JESUS begins like this: After the betrothment of his mother
Mary with Joseph, before either of them could have met, she was found to be carrying in the
    womb, from the sacred GHOST.
19 But because her fiancé, Joseph, was kindhearted & loathed to shame her in public, he
preferred to have her disowned in a private manner.
20 But as he slept on these thoughts, behold! The Angel of our Lord appeared unto him in a
dream, saying: Joseph, thou son of David, do not dread to receive Mary as your bride; in truth
the one who grows in her, is from the sacred GHOST.
21 And she shall labor & deliver a son, and thou wilt call his name JESUS, since he shall save
    his citizens from their flaws.
22 Now, all this came to fruition, to complete what was spoken through the Prophet by the
    LORD, foretelling:
23 Behold! A Virgin shall bear in the womb & bring forth a son; and they will call his name
IMMANUEL, which being translated is: The GOD among us.
24 And when Joseph awoke out of bed, he did as the Angel of our Lord had bidden him, and
    accepted Mary as his wife.
25 But he acquainted among her not, till she had brought forth her firstborn son; and she gave
    him the name JESUS. {Luke 1:31}

Interesting translation. I am suspecting that you are trying to preserve the perpetual virginity of Mary.

@@crossroadschurchofthenazar1836 this is December 1st of 2022 and I don't get that he's trying to preserve her virginity or immaculate conception kind of idea that the Catholics believe in which we know that Jesus was born of a virgin it's the the very thing he quote says he didn't make love to her until later after she gave birth to Jesus so not sure if you're just protective of that meaning we know that Jesus was born of a virgin but his mother Mary gave birth to more children after he was born although even that is hazy and its report even though I believe he had several siblings I believe that's what the scripture tells us we know Jude is his brother and James and then he had some sisters anyway the point is I don't get that out of this person's comment they're just trying to make it in less words they were just trying to say this is what the preacher is saying but this is but these are less words and this is how he interprets each one of those verses and I'm a fundamental Baptist so I'm just giving you what I am understanding the person commenting that I don't think they're protecting that Catholic view of Mary

No, verse 25 explains that. KJV says he 'knew' her not til after Y' shua was born. To know someone biblically is intimacy.@@crossroadschurchofthenazar1836

Hello Pastor! I'm just at the beginning of your message but even though there was indeed NO prophet actually speaking during those years, GOD was far from being silent in His DEEDS and counsel ... to the Maccabees without whom there would be NO jews left alive in the Land or if there were, they would ALL have been so Hellenized that GOD would not use them to bring about HIS MESSIAH!

I generally greatly appreciate your teaching and your clear method of presentation but in this sermon you’ve confused me.
Why point out the messiness of Jesus’ genealogy as presented in Mathew when that only leads to and ends with Joseph, not Jesus?
Jesus’ actual earthly family tree is presented in Luke and rightfully flows down through Mary to and including Jesus.
Pointing out the flawed folks in that lineage to make the point of this sermon would be more apt.

I came across this video on the genealogies of Jesus it's interesting But it's not true in Luke & Matthew is not Jesus but Joseph. mary has her own lineage, ( Aarons.) ( Zadok Peiest ).
keep in mind Elisabeth and Mary are Cousins (Daughters of Aaron) which makes John the Baptist also a priest son of Zacharias. Aaron married Elishehba the daughter of Amminadab from the house of ( -JUDAH =)sister of Naasson (Matthew 1:4),
G-D chose Mary's lineage that makes Jesus (Jewish & Levite ) Maybe when you read ( Hebrews 7:1-24) you will see what I mean. It is just an observation I mean no disrespect.
    Shalom.
