Macross Frontier: How to RENEW a Franchise (the Correct Way) | Macross F Exploration

  • MACROSS FRONTIER was a show that celebrated the 25th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Set over a decade after the what happened in Macross 7, Macross Frontier tells the story of the 25th New Macross-class Colonial Fleet, the Macross Frontier, who's moving towards the galactic center... yet, it encounters a new enemy: the insectoid biomechanical alien known as the Vajra. With a simple story and a complex background... is Macross F the best Macross Saga yet?
    My name is Absa, and in this video I'll try to explore how Macross Frontier brought a new level of intrigue to the plot and subverted the Zentradi's "yack deculture" element with the Vajra. That and also, show us one of the best looking valkyries ever with the VF-25 Messiah.

    I've alway been a Macross fan ever since I came across it as Robotech, watching random episodes on the afternoon cartoons on TV. I was hooked on the mech designs even more than Transformers or Go-Bots. When the internet era came along, and Ebay was a thing, at which time I started acquiring bootleg DVDs, I started to learn about the polemic story between Big West and Harmony Gold. I got even more intrigued with the franchise and quickly became my favorite anime as I bought original figures from Takatoku and Bandai as well as the more recent ones from Yamato, I loved everything from DYRL to Macross Plus. But when I came across Frontier I was going through a rough time in my life, and it literally kept me sane and gave me something to look forward to; so, I savored it, bought the figures, I even have the Macross Quarter, and, aside from the excellent story, It really holds a special place in my heart I hope to share with my baby girl some day in hopes she would share the feeling. So, what I'm trying to say is thank you so much for taking the time! Keep it up!

      My favorite will always be Macross Plus. Plus had the greatest story line and everything meshes very well with the original.. I would have enjoyed frontier a bit more if the main protagonist was a bit more likeable and they get rid of the whole psychic "one mind" sharing insects. Honestly fighting rogue zentraedi was never an issue with me. My opinion, the classification of best to worst Macross series would be: Macross Plus (Isamu is just too cool with his jet and all, with great story), Original Macross (I could watch DYRL over and over, love how Minmei was portrayed in there, she was a bit spoiled, but super loveable). After that is really a toss between Macross7 and Frontier (I would give 7 the edge just because it has Max and Mira in it?) Falling behind would be Macross 0 (the floating stones and psychic powered aliens just did not mesh with me) and finally Macross Delta (which is by far the worst Macross of all time, flying idols on the wings of fighter jets while they combat? seriously???). I did not include Macross 2, because it is not truly a macross series.

  • @lorcannagle
    @lorcannagle Před rokem +6

    One thing that speaks to how well-structured Frontier is as well is the constant escalation of threat and response - the first few episodes you only see Valkyries fighting individual Vajra. But then when the rescue mission kicks off, Macross Quarter launches and is pretty consistently in combat. Battle Frontier doesn't even fire its' Macross Cannon until episode 18 or so, let alone separate from island One. They don't break out the reaction missiles until late in the show, and then escalate to the MDE ones. It makes the larger ships and weapons feel weighty and important in a way that Macross 7 didn't try to do with Battle 7.

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat Před rokem

      They also learned valuable lessons from 7 because instead of beating you over the head by repeating the same song chorus 3-4 times in every episode the frontier OST is one of my favourite soundtracks ever not just anime. Everything from upbeat to office pomp to even aimo getting 2-3 remixes.
      And while I live macross plus the songs are far more backing tracks than the belters in frontier.

    • @lorcannagle
      @lorcannagle Před rokem +1

      @@IRMentat I think 7's music likely suffered as much from the advertisers "double the episode count" edict as the rest of the show, and as a result they had to space out the songs. It doesn't help that Planet Dance is far from fire Bomber's best song.
      And 100% agreed on Frontier's soundtrack overall. It still gets a lot of spins here, especially now that all the Macross music is on Spotify.

    Shes pretty cute and you watch her grow from a timid fledgling into a strong character.

  • @chuckhaynes9166
    @chuckhaynes9166 Před rokem +14

    I'm late for this.
    Frontier is pretty good, a definite return to form for Macross in many ways. The singers, and the fact that they even have their own catalogue of songs to contrast with each other give the triangle some actual force.
    Some spoilers!
    I do have a few problems with it, and it really has to do with Kawamori. The Vajra make a pretty easy to kill villain/misunderstood race. Alien enough to not care too much what they may be thinking and pretty much a thing to make the fighters do something. The Macross Galaxy with a completely different world and worldview was far more interesting, and in my opinion...we didn't get enough of it besides Grace being a typical "last villain". I think Kawamori feels a strong need to run from human conflict in a realistic way. When he is pushed, like in Plus or the original, it comes out pretty good, but I think on his own, he doesn't want to think about it.
    Even here the Macross Galaxy comes across as mechanical and lifeless, bothering to explore their actual motivations and culture would have pushed Frontier to bigger heights. Instead they are a convenient excuse to rehab the vajra and be a faceless enemy. They probably die by the thousands in the last episode of the show, and thinking about their population of humans is an afterthought.

    • @schroecat1
      @schroecat1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      You might be on to something there. If Frontier had a proper series length, like SDF Macross and 7 had, they could have explored Galaxy more thoroughly and played more with the alienness of the Vajra. But only limited to a half-length season like it was makes it hard.

    *One song* is the reason I will never recommend Macross Frontier without recommending DYRL to be watched first, despite Frontier being (in my opinion) a better story on all fronts.
    I saw Frontier first, without any other Macross context, and I felt genuine grief when I realised the poetic punch-in-the-gut that I'd missed in that scene after finally watching the original series and DYRL. The masterfully re-toned arrangement aligning with the dark reflection of the corresponding moment in the earlier movie paints one the most powerful scenes in modern media, at least to me. Even hundreds of listens later, those savage opening piano stabs give me whole-body shivers every time.

    • @schroecat1
      @schroecat1 Před 3 měsíci

      Agreed. A person absolutely *can* watch Frontier without having seen DYRL, but they *shouldn't*. Understanding the context of Oboete Imasuka adds so much to the scene.

  • @tonyjunior-thefirstgentlem410

    When it comes to the love triangle, one reason that Alto and Sheryl like each other is because Alto sees Sheryl as just a regular girl and Sheryl appreciates that. As for Ranka, she and Alto are just very good friends who grew up together and naturally that's another form of friendship and love.

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat Před rokem +2

      Never even grew up together, she delivered someone else’s lunch and saw him flying with the power-armour.
      Ranka was just being actively pushed towards alto by almost everyone around her while sheryl had a far more natural relationship growth plus a similar experience of fame.
      Alas the ranka fans were so pained over her inevitable rejection that delta was sunk to have an annoying brat and his of-comparable-age rune-girl pushed HARD such that the overall story suffered because of it (will admit that the song axia gets me real good), upside mirage never got past the puppy love state so actual best girl gets a chance with someone not mentally deficient. Downside,most of the other cast were never around long enough to develop more than a mild attachment to making a W with their fingers while being a bit sassy.

The original Macross was an incredible series regarding maturation, from youthful bliss to hard realities an choices as an adult. Along with all growing pains that come with it. Finding your way in the dark, making friends, dealing with new emotions from adolescence to becoming an adult, experiencing gut wrenching hardship an deep emotional situations (war/death/lost love/family etc) while overcoming adversity while fighting to survive against insurmountable odds.

    I only just (finally) watched Frontier this year, mostly because I just couldn't find it anywhere and it really didn't feel dated at all for a show that's... what about 15- years old now... I thought it was great, it had everything that makes a Macross series so good... this (to me) is the only Mecha Anime that's right at the top of my list along with Gundam. Alto Saotome's and Ozuma Lee's Messiah Valkyrie (VF-25F/S) (to me) take the Mecha designs back to what they should be... I just love these designs especially Fighter Mode because they feel like the true successor to Hikaru Ichijo"s and Roy Focker's (love that last name... lol) original Valkyries (VF-1A/S)... the show also has the same feel as SDF Macross, just a lot better animation. I have also just watched Macross Delta, which has a bit more of a direct tie to the original cast of SDF and even though it amps up the songstress side with the Walkure and the Siegfried Valkyrie has a bit of a reverse wing style, I totally enjoyed it but I think Frontier is better... The reason why Sheryl likes Alto is because he isn't impressed by the fact that she's a celebrity, and their dedication to their dreams is the same, and even comes from a similar source. Their love for their parents.
    For Ranka it's because she thinks of Alto as her Prince Charming that always saves her.

    Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta all follow the timeline set by the movie "Macross Do You Remember Love?", and not the original SDF Macross TV series.

      Probably more to do with IRW consequences of the legal disputes between BigWest, and Tatsunoko having "sold" the rights (Which were never grated to them), to this outfit called Harmony Gold.
      So that's why the TV exists, but isn't the 'canon'.

    Watched Frontier after Delta, and I have to say, much prefer Frontier. Much better music, and having a couple less characters really helps with character development. I also liked the better look into how the Zentradi integrated with humanity, that was a nice touch. The Delta VF-31 Siegfried Is my favorite design (more dakka and the wings), but the VF-25 is a close second, and all look gorgeous in Frontier. Also loved the Konig Monster and the screentime it got.
    Honestly, Team Throuple or Team Platonic. Alto seemed more enamored with an open sky to fly in than romance with either of the songstresses. Not that he hasn't demonstrated a strong desire to protect them, but he would have gotten into that downed Messiah at the start regardless of who needed protecting, Ranka was just there in the moment.

    I think you should look deeper into Alto's backstory. The romance plotline has a different flavor the Haise/Hunter/Minmei triangle. The connection is that they all see the entertainers performing and Alto is running away from the Kubuuki and his father. Also I really wasn't a fan of sterotype of oblivious protagonist in Alto.

    • @Winchester1979
      @Winchester1979 Před rokem

      I'll have to disagree on that. The Quarter is a cool *robot*, but it is the worst "transforming warship" out of all the "Macross" designs.
      The SDF-1 and the New Macross Class both looked like proper, solid warships with no obvious hints as to how they would transform (or even *that* they would transform, since they kept that out of the respective opening animations for both SDF Macross and Macross 7.) The New Macross Class was especially good since the shape was effectively just a bigger Uraga-class space carrier, and those *didn't* transform. In each show, going into them blind would make the transformation sequences a *massive* surprise.
      The Battle Frontier is a refinement of the New Macross class from Macross 7, so if you'd seen one you knew it would transform, but then they changed things up with the quad muzzles for the main gun being fake and the real gun being something that swung down from behind them, and it didn't transform until the very end either.
      Macross Quarter? Was entirely obvious that "this is an only slightly folded up robot that gains no advantage from pretending to be a ship. There's no solidity in the ship design, the arms and legs don't connect to each other at all and it's all still just a core with four limbs sticking out, just folded up. There's no sense of "this is a contiguous surface " anywhere like there was with the New Macross class' giant flight deck. It looks really cool when its doing flips and capoeira kicks and surfing on a piece of wreckage or sniping from behind an asteroid and is easily the most expressive *robot* out of the entire lineup, but it is a sucky *ship*.
      And then Macross Elysion, finally, is *presented* to us in robot form, and while it was obvious that it would transform into a ship at *some* point, the end result of the transformation was a lot more solid-looking that most of us watching had thought it would be until we saw the model kit (which kind of spoiled it) - not quite as monolithic as the SDF-1 or the New Macross class, but definitely way more solid than the Quarter, with big long flight decks that run nearly the length of the ship on either side of the center chunk where the bridge is, and the elbows and legs lock together to form those flight decks. I don't see the robot when I look at the Elysion in ship form, unless I look for it knowing that there *is* a robot in there. With the Quarter, the robot was unbearably obvious when we first saw the ship form.
      Hence why the quarter is Worst Macross, and Worst Variable Anything. It's the coolest *Destroid* ever built tho.

    I what i never got, is why there are so many humans, remember that the only survivors on earth were the people living inside the original macross, whch is a ship 1km long. How fast did they repopulate enough to have those massive cities in a space fleet?

    • @alekesam
      @alekesam Před rokem

      As I understand it, it's not just humans in the fleet, there's Zentran and Meltrans as well. And depending on whether you go by DYRL or the original TV series, the latter established that there were pocket survivors around the world.

    • @Winchester1979
      @Winchester1979 Před rokem +1

      They pulled a trick out of the Zentraedi playbook, and possibly straight out of their factories even, and basically cloned themselves a new population and then sent them off on colony ships, with a fleet every year until 2030. They stopped the cloning after that because of problems with epidemics among the clone population. The whole thing IIRC comes up in one of the games - the protagonist of the VF-X and VF-X2 games is Aegis Focker, who is IIRC a clone of Roy Focker, and one of the last batch made. Or something like that.
      Also, Max and Milia were not the only people who went for a large family. One of the bridge bunnies from the original series canonically has twelve kids, and was still living on the moon as of the last update of her status (2059).

    My take on Frontier: Satelight sucks at writing so much that they needed Yoko Kanno to write them a few musicals. This way, the backstory (which they reminded us at the beginning of the first 5 episodes or so) and the music can carry the show. And it worked, just as it did with Aquarion. I can't say no to a good old Yoko Kanno spectacle.
    The problem: by the time the 3rd Macross film is in theaters, Kanno is an international star composer, having written music for Japan's biggest broadcaster NHK and known to top orchestras worldwide, so she can demand a ton of money (and so can Naoki Sato (Eureka Seven), Hiroyuki Sawano (Gundam UC), Yuki Kajiura, etc.). This is great for Kanno, but not so much for Satelight.
    Aquarion series 1 and Macross Frontier were a new high for Satelight and Kawamori largely because of Kanno's amazing soundtracks and songs. Remove her from the picture and you get shows like Aquarion Logos and Macross Delta-- even when the soundtrack is good enough to not make me throw my headphones, the bad, even amateurish, writing and direction just stuck out to me. Imagine the first 2 Star Wars trilogies without John Williams, and you get my drift.
