This man was not just a pianist... it was really more.
yeah, ask his wife and children
Yes..
It's always more.
You have no idea how grateful I am to be able to see this film again. Many fine hours in a local repertory film house on Sunday afternoons in the 1970's were spent with this film, indulging in the lavish, sensuous, playful company of this "bon vivant" master of the keys. Shame on the commercial interests for not making this marvellous film available to 21st century music lovers. And I thank you will all my heart for what must have been a great effort bringing this film to CZcams. Kisses !
Reichenbach made also a fantastic documentary on Menuhin (mostly shot in India). I had watched it in 1973 I think on French TV. Also impossible to find. Why, I don’t know...
I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Rubenstein in Madrid in the late 1960's. I was studying at the university, and went to hear him play one of the Beethoven concerti. I went to see him with one of my instructors, whose cousin was principle trumpet with the symphony, so we got backstaqe after the performance. His cousin introduced me to Mr. Rubenstein , who was talking backstage. I don't remember what was said, but I do recall that he stopped the conversation he was engaged in, long enough to smile and greet me. That impressed me very much.
Lucky you! Thank you for sharing your story. It is impressive that he could be so contented within himself, to be kind and cordial with you, even in the middle of another conversation! I hope this inspires me to be more happy!
Everything I've seen or read or heard about him shows that he was a very friendly man who loved people and life and music.
Beautiful. Rubinstein had an innocent sunshine, a childlike sweetness about him, a little like Harpo Marx, or The Little Prince (even bore a slight resemblance to both), while at the same time he strode the world of concert piano like a titan. It’s no surprise to learn he was a formidable and irrepressible ladies’ man!
Seeing the looks of boyish elation on his face, you'd never think he's one of the most brilliant musical geniuses to ever live.
This video right here is the culmination of a lifetime of intensive practice
What a wonderful man. I have always loved Rubinstein above all other pianists. And no one can interpret the works of his fellow countryman Chopin the way Arthur does.
This movie is everything. Rubinstein. He transformed music for me. Everything he explains are things we already felt in his music, the immense pain and yet more immense joy of being alive another day, another minute.
A bientôt mes amis !

something about his playing is just so different... or its the recording quality but no joke his touch on the piano is so different yet so... perfect in a way. as if what he played is what the composer truly intended.
I too first saw this charming documentary in London in the 1970s (1971 to be exact) and have been looking to see if it was possible to buy it ever since such searches became possible online. And now, 43 years on, I find it on CZcams! So, my thanks too for this posting, and I support the request that a version be made available in some modern format.
A great artist and humanitarian whom embraced all the good things of life , if one were to describe such a person nowadays it would be to say - a true global citizen and advocate of what is honest and life enhancing in art .
Thank you so much for this superb upload.
Rubinstein had the most beautiful tone of any pianist. He and the instrument were one -- but that could be said of many keyboard people. His tone was gorgeous at any dynamic level, in any kind of music and any kind of musical texture. His equipment: the most marvelously built hands and fingers, fingers with generous fatty deposits in their tips, a cantabile sound and an incapacity for coarseness. He was all muscle and all subtlety at once. His Chopin was a model of clarity and the love of the music was all too obvious. His easy command of particularly French and English is related to his playing. The first volume of his memoirs, “My Young Years”, which he finished when he was 85, is redolent with this combination of the art of full living and exuberant natural musicianship.
It is amazing. You hear every note and it all sounds so unplanned. So simple and spontaneous.
I just love him...most wonderful of personalities :)
I love 10:43 on because you see he is absorbing the orchestral interlude to merge in with it and become a part of the whole as a soloist. That is what I miss these days".....
Amazing! I heard about this documentary a long time ago - from my father who watched it when he was young - and now I have found it at last. Thank you so much for uploading! CZcams is a growing treasure of culture.
And...regarding his playing at 27:04 (op 59:1 by Beethoven, slow movement), I can only agree - it is unbearably beautiful...!
A wonderful man as well as a great artist. He was a great raconteur also with a wonderful sense of humour and very approachable. All in all a great human being.
Thanks for posting this! I absolutely adore Rubinstein, especially his Beethoven interpretations.
I highly recommend all fans of Rubinstein to read his hilarious, touching and provoking memoirs, written by the man himself. They are awesome!
This man was so intelligent....I have heard him speak English, German, French, Russian, Polish....maybe more?
Yes. He also spoke Spanish and Italian
@@nicolascosta2597 Amazing !
Absolutely marvelous! Wonderful treat. I saw Rubenstein play a recital when I was a little boy. Everyone was completely enthralled! I've never seen such happiness spread through such a large group of people.
Great story teller! God loves a good story and so do I.
What a beautiful gift to have found this just now in time for Christmas :-) x
What a wonderful man and artist!
Sublime. No hay palabras humanas para poder describirlo. Amo la sabiduría que poseía Arthur Rubinstein. Desearía haberlo conocido en vida. Muchas gracias por este maravilloso documental.
How extraordinary that with Beethoven's or Schubert 's beauty not Bach, Mozart or Chopin Rubinstein would try to somehow explain the Core, Magic , Secret also of His Art .Music is in a way a language of human soul , connection to eternal Beauty of every aspect 28: 06

Si alguien pudiese agregar subtitulos en español a este hermoso documento sería algo maravilloso... ¡Gracias!
Che grande folle generoso e gentile genio ❤😊
H-O-N-E-S-T-Y. That's Rubinstein. wWth genius.
At 5:25 notice that Rubinstein's fifth finger is very nearly as long as his fourth. There is very little difference in the lengths of fingers 3, 4, and 5; a wonderful hand for the piano!
your are a student, this comentary only be of the principiants students.
Amazing gift - thank you soooo much !!!! A question, though : how did you find this gem ? Did you have it on VHS, Super something ?... Cause I desperately tried to have it published on DVD a few years ago, I even contacted personally the heirs of the filmmakers & the bank who owns parts of the rights, but there is such a mess around the rights ownership of this documentary that it made it impossible to publish it again...

Due to incompetence and French pride and political nepotism, Air France has never made a profit. But it was one of the most pleasant airlines to travel with.
Who composed this little Waltz in D minor at 53:06 ?
Why would an unknown piece be played in this film? Must have been composed by Rubinstein.
Does anyone know the names of the tangos he played? Please
The first one at 55:00 remains to be identified.
The rest are:
-"Dieciséis" by Alberico Spatola (what he called "beethoven-like")
-"Esta noche me emborracho" by Enrique Santos Discépolo (what he called "tango vulgar")
-"Die Fledermaus" by Strauss which is clearly not tango but he plays it in a tango manner
-"La Huella" by Anibal Villanueva, this is the last one
27:05 exquisite. . .
