Drawing on Top of an Acrylic Painting? Yes!
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Here's a good question I was recently asked during an online workshop-Can you draw with a pen or pencil on top of a dried acrylic painting? My answer is YES! Right or wrong, I make it work for me.
This BobBlast features two demos using pens designed for artists who like to draw with quality India Ink, but with the convenience of several pen sizes, tips and colors. My favorites are waterproof, maximum lightfastness and rated for excellent permanence.
Okay, now that we got that first part answered… I will address what I do with these artist pens. I draw back into and on top of my paintings with a variety of oil-based markers-after the acrylic has dried.
My favorite pens for drawing (and signing my work) are Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens. I also use these pens for sketchbook note taking and small drawings. I get the black ink in fine, medium and bold. Faber-Castell also makes an opaque white Pitt Pen-very handy for signing a dark painting.
Here is another favorite of mine-Sharpie Paint. It is oil based, so it adheres to an acrylic or oil-based surface just beautifully. This pen also comes in several nib sizes and colors. Another brand of oil based paint marker is “Painty” by ZIG. They are also rated high for permanence and lightfastness. They are also waterproof and opaque.
Back to the original question, Can you draw with a pen or pencil on top of a dried acrylic painting?… Simply remember this guideline:
Oil based on top of watercolor, acrylic and oil is okay. Acrylic based on top of oil is not okay.
These are guidelines! Just go paint!

You spread such positive vipes in your videos, I love it !
Thank you very much, Bob😍
Thank you!
I stumbled across your channel this morning and have spent ages watching you with a big grin on my face! Quit my job recently to pursue my true passion which is art. A bit daunting at 42 . I have done a few paintings recently but while I have been satisfied with the end product , I did not enjoy the process much and got lost in the details .
Thank you for inspiring me to have FUN with art and just enjoy the process - about to head off to the garage to dust off my acrylics and get painting ! ❤
I have some of these oil based Sharpies brand new and I’ve never known what to do with them! Thank you Bob!❤️
Thanks! Start experimenting!
Always so generous with your tips and tricks! Thank you
Thank you!
Thank for sharing all this valuable information! I love your videos.... You deserve way more subcriptors! Thanks!
You’re absolute right, that’s what I love about art. I can do anything I want and if it works I’ve learned something and if it doesn’t, again I’ve learned something.
That's the truth! Thank you Sheila - very well said!
Another wonderful infusion of knowledge and enthusiasm. Many thanks.
Many thanks to you, Susan!
I love your spirit sir. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us :)
Thank you very much!
I draw on nearly every acrylic painting I make, however I use Posca acrylic paint pens. I sometimes use oil pastels as well.
Awesome! I really enjoy the sharing - Thanks for your input!
great.... loved this tip! ❤️ thanks Bob!
Thank you Cheryl! Glad you enjoyed the BobBlast!
Thanks again, Bob! Great suggestion!
Thank you Scott!
I love it!
actually the FC pitt pens are india ink based, not oil. I also haven't had a problem with using a regular sharpie on acrylic. Yes, the oil based one does a better job. I use the regular sharpie when I make greeting cards.
Thanks for your comments - It has been my experience that the "regular" Sharpie pens fade. I had some signatures disappear, which prompted me to switch to the oil-based. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips. Until next video, Bob 😊
Appreciate it Susan! Thanks.
Thank you for this great information!
Thanks Teresa!
The Stabilo All pencil works great on everything too - acrylic and oil paintings.
Cool! Thank you for your input!
thanks Bob!
Someone in a comment said you are so nice, i totally agree...you are ! i love you in a n agape sense. Thanks Bob for the info re oil based Sharpies, interesting. ❤👍👍👍
Thank you Andrea - your comments always make my day!
So cool
Thank you!
I'm going to get oil markers as soon as our freezing weather improves! Practice on a couple acrylic paintings that need something different added. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Sharon! Stay warm and dry!
Thamks Bob. I never thought about drawing on a painting .looks like fun! I love your videos. Good question about why not use acrylic markers on acrylic paintings? You can paint over that drawing with oil or acrylic.
Thanks Peter - If I paint over the acrylic marker or add water, it can start to bleed - but hey! try it!
Great advice! Wondering if I mark up my acrylic painting with the pen, can I varnish over the whole thing without the pen smearing?
Thank you 🌟
Thank You Diane!
Thanks!
Thanks Brenda!

You are very kind! Thank you!
You are so nice!!! Reminds me Bob Ross:)
Thank you!
Oh yes I am!
Just wondering why not use acrylic pens rather than oil - anybody?
You can. Posca works. Stabilo woody works if you spray a mist of water first. Try everything!
Thanks - If I paint over the acrylic marker or add water, it can start to bleed - but hey! try it!
Hi Bob, I’ve been wondering about this topic! Thank you for tips on the pens you use that’s very helpful. Just found & subscribed to your channel last week. I also love your enthusiasm & your wonderful videos! 😁
I use acrylic markers but they are quite thick and lot of fine tips are alcohol markers they smudge terribly perhaps Bob meant don’t use them.
😊❤
Thank you!
nice light studio man
Thank you! North light is very cool.
What to use over red paint?
How do use the silver or gold sheets on the painting?
If they are paper sheets, I collage them like any other paper.
Does it means I can use it on oilpaintings too?
Yes - give it a try!
Bonjour,
