      This. Like, Stacey, I know you know we want you to listen to the whole thing, and I know you plan to do so. What's unclear is whether you realize how much some of the individual songs lose out on if they're not listened to in context. Time and Money are really the only two tracks that I'd say are fine to listen to on their own, and you've done both of those, and then some. You can, of course, do what you wish, but I'd highly recommend you skip straight to the whole-album (or album sides, at least) listen(s).

    • @DavidLindes
      @DavidLindes Před měsícem +1

      P.S. And if you're doing the individual tracks first for CZcams purposes or whatever, then just... record the full-album one before you record the individual track ones, or something? I guess either way you spoil a first listen. Never mind... but yeah... something.

    There is a reason that the songs play one into the other. That was the intention of Alan Parsons( producer )and Pink Floyd. Wait until you hear the whole album without interruption. You’ll understand.

  • @DerekPower
    @DerekPower Před měsícem +2

    You are more more more more than ready for The Dark Side of the Moon, even with the songs you haven’t heard yet =]. You will get a kick out of it as a continuous and uninterrupted experience. And listening to it on record is the way to go, not only for the flow and that gap when you have to flip to the other side.
    A lot of what makes the album work was that it was actually refined over the course of a year or so. The band played the whole piece starting in the spring of 1972 when they were touring. Each performance was an opportunity to refine and give it a more final shape. When it came time to the actual recordings later that fall, they knew pretty much how it was going to sound and it was matter of getting down on tape in the best way.
    To get personal, I got into Pink Floyd when I was about five or so. I listened to the records my parents had (and I’m sure it was my dad who got it 😁) and I loved how they seem to take you on a journey, even when you don’t exactly know what it is or where you are going. I got my own copy of The Dark Side of the Moon as a Christmas present when I was six.
    As a musical sensei here: the word that applies here is “instrumental”
    The beauty of music in general is it can “say something” without necessarily “saying it”. There’s an inherent ambiguity to it when you hear instrumental music and thus it becomes an incredibly personal moment as you have experienced a number of times already. Definitely keep exploring and there’s a lot more out there =]
    As for this specific piece, the title is a play on a phrase often attributed to Henry Ford regarding the Model T: “it can be any colour you like as long as it’s black”. So with that plus the whole album being an examination of modern life, it can be about the “illusion of choice”. While I can understand why one could conclude that, I do think that you can make choices and in making choices can add to the richness of life, both in yourself and in others. Just because you can’t experience all possibilities never means you can never experience any possibility.
    At any rate, hopefully your journey to the dark side of the moon will come sooner rather than later 😉. Take care =]

  • @vicprovost2561
    @vicprovost2561 Před měsícem +2

    This instrumental interlude is a bridge between Us and Them and the madness and genius that comes after. This tune is Rick Wright and David Gilmour jamming out, colorfully to say the least! Yes, when you do the Dark Side album, all the individual songs will make more sense as part of a cohesive whole. Back then, other than hearing songs on the FM radio, we mainly played albums like this as a whole, we had way more time to listen for 45 minutes at a time to a great album, no cell phones, social media or other modern tech, having 13 channels on the TV and no way to record video. Just you and a few others in a room, grooving to the best music ever, often stoned out, and living life without everything going on that distracts you or takes up much time in modern media. The art of direct conversation with others and not on a cell phone, those were the days, I was lucky to live back then.
    Anyhow, you are awesome and I always look for you when I go to You Tube. Such a gorgeous and very nice young lady, grooving on the music I grew up with, being affected by these all time master MUSCIANS in a way that affects me! 2 more bands to eventually get really into are The WHO and Black Sabbath, those 2 exist in a similar place just below Zeppelin and Floyd and both have some of the greatest music of all time waiting for your discriminating ears. 🎧 For the WHO, try Behind Blue Eyes, for Black Sabbath, do Symptom of the Universe. Both all time classic songs you would love. Thanks for being you and Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I’ve always loved this song, the drum pattern is as you say completely solid and the base gives a really mellow group. The keys on the sink are also really amazing and build the song. The concept of music about the concept of colors. Instruments are like the colors in the rainbow, just pick one and mix it at will with whatever you like. Like in the later years of life, when we are full of experience and no longer worry about small things, but enjoy the moment supported by the behavior accumulated over these many years. Beautiful colors. Whatever happens, I'm fine. It is located towards the end of the album, only a summary with a concluding thought follows. In this concept album that follows a man through his life from birth, first breath, youthful running, gaining experience, growing up with the concept of time, the transience of life with death, the absurdity of money, wars, to the accumulation experienced in old age and reconciliation and enjoying everything together when then life may expire.

    It is a little hidden in the mix, but you can hear David Gilmour scat singing in unison what the guitar is doing in some parts. It is something he has done on other songs as well, notably on Wish You Were Here. The record player is a great idea. There is nothing better than to listen to this record on vinyl through speakers one song melting into the next. Our big treat used to be going to a friend that had an audiophile vinyl of DSOTM for a listening party. He would bust that copy out only once in a while.

    Look inside your new album. The inner sleeve has all the lyrics, and this will show that 4 of the tracks are instrumentals. (That's including Clare Torry's amazing "Great Gig" contribution as an vocal instrumental.) My older sister got DSOTM when it came out in '73 and played it repeatedly. Hearing it only through her closed bedroom door I was still much intrigued. I finally had to sneak into her room one day to hear it properly. I listened while reading along with those lyrics. Unlike most other rock songs of that era, the words made sense to the impressionable pre-teen who I was at the time. Even better was experiencing the clarity of this vinyl recording - meticulously engineered by Alan Parsons - on her high fidelity sound system. I've been a Floyd fan ever since. So, Stacey, you must do yourself a favor: get a quality turntable and play the full album straight through!

  • @nilshallberg6825

    Pink Floyd has produced a bunch of so-called "concept albums," which are intended to be listened to from start to finish. This is because the individual songs together form the whole - the actual concept. They are simply not meant to be listened to out of context. This is perhaps especially true for Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut. So - have a good journey listening to them all, from start to end - it truly is an experience!

    No lyrics, but Roger Waters had a strong idea about the choice of the title (Any Color You Like) and its meaning. In Cambridge, where he lived at the time, vendors came from London in vans to sell bric-a-brac of cheap crockery and cutlery. One day when one of them had hooked up a customer for a set of Chinese plates, Roger overheard him selling his product, adding:
    "Yes ma'am, you can have them for 10 pounds, the color of your choice, they are all BLUE (Any color you like, they're all blue)" Which led him to believe that all choices in a man's life are guided. No matter what path you take, karma will always catch up with you. Man thinks of making his own decisions, choosing his own color, but everything is already dictated, everything is BLUE. Typically Waters metaphor.

    Happy birthday!
    Your sister is the best sister on the planet with this gift!
    This Pink Floyd album is the first LP that I bought when I was 14 (a long, long time ago, I'm 51 now), CDs, PCs and mp3s didn't exist at the time and not even internet! Young people today can't imagine how lucky they are to have such easy access to all the world's music thanks to the internet.
    I listened to this album tons and tons of times, I learned with my guitar to play "Money" and "Time" (by ear... self-taught)
    It remains one of my favorite albums in my collection, between the albums of Radiohead, the Beastie boys, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Faith no more... and so many other very good groups.
    But I recognize that Pink Floyd is the upper floor, the other side of the universe! This group has something special that far exceeds all other groups.
    Listening to the songs again, I realize that in my time, there was an animated cartoon called Cobra Space adventure. I actually think that the creator of this animated series (Buichi Terasawa who sadly passed away last year) was a big fan of Pink Floyd. the music themes are really inspired by the style that Pink Flod had in the 70s.
    Coming back to the music, I sincerely think that if you really like Pink Floyd, you will also really like Radiohead who are a group that goes a bit in all directions in the styles of their music but they are fabulous too. Maybe I would suggest you start with one of these "street siprit" tracks "Paranoid Android", "How To Disappear Completely", "Exit Music (For A Film)" or the legendary "Creep".
    Greetings

    I first heard this song the day the album was released in 1973, and at the time I thought of it as just an extended jam to fill time on the B side of the album. Over the years my opinion has changed drastically until now I consider it one of the better songs on an album that is basically a string of wall to wall masterpieces.

    Pink Floyd was born in an era where 8-Track was the new tech, you could only buy on Vinyl or 8-Track. Which is probably why every song bleeds seamlessly into the next and even the last song bleeds perfectly into the first song...8-Tracks played the entire recording on a loop, so Pink Floyd adhered to that format for the best listening experience.

    • @Dan-nj8du
      @Dan-nj8du Před měsícem +1

      You do know that was the format for all music at the time, right. The songs flow one into the other because that's how Pink Floyd wanted it. 8-tracks were the bane of music listeners as they often broke the middle of the song to change tracks. I preferred cassettes for that reason.

    From 5:53 until the end of the song they are actually quoting Breathe's chord progression. Actually you can hear that same theme repeating throughout the whole album. It's pretty cool :D
    Thanks again for your reactions, they make me listen to songs I probably forgot about after playing them one too many times years ago.

    Drifting around the tubes and came across your channel. Always love seeing someone finding their way to Floyd. It's just an experience. I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd in Cava Dei Tirreni Italy in the 80's when I stationed over there with the US Navy and found myself 2nd row center to the stage for the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert (close enough to see David and feel the fire!) Ended up framing the program and my ticket recently and have it hanging over my turntable. One of those defining concerts that so many will never be able to experience these days. One of the few bands that I start listening to and find myself losing hours out of the day...

  • @animistchannel
    @animistchannel Před měsícem

    You have gotten so good at dropping right into the groove of Pink Floyd! Yes, this is a transitional track between "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage/Ecliplse" but it is also a masterwork of Pink Floyd's improv jamming combined with Alan Parsons' revolutionary stereo sound design. There are elements of this that showed up in the first Alan Parsons' Project album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination," particularly tracks like "The Raven" and "(The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Feather." Parsons went on to put these kind of not-quite-clashing base and treble elements in the extended movement of "Turn of a Friendly Card" / "Snake Eyes" / "Ace of Swords" / "Nothing Left to Lose" / "Turn of a Friendly Card II" and all the later albums. To some extent, both Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons spent the ensuing decades revisiting this ethic, and judged themselves on how well they had achieved it.
    If you want a real mind-freak, go listen to what Eric Wolfson, Alan Parsons, and Andrew Powell achieved with "Silence and I," both on the original album track and in the Parsons "Live in Columbia" performance years later with a live orchestra and rock band. It is perhaps the greatest exhibition of the autistic mindset ever put to sound, interlacing periods of single-soul isolation with up to 8 layers of complex overwhelming acoustic dynamics -- just try, try, try to hear them all at once, and you may have some idea of what it means to say "Welcome to my world."
    For that matter, you could draw a parallel between "Money" / "Us and Them" from Dark Side that continues into the Wolfson/Parsons/Powell operatic powerhouse "La Sagrada Familia" as commentary on societal conflicts.

    This particular song sounds so early 70's that's what I like about it specially the guitar parts, all the times I listened to the whole album this song usually went right above my head cause I was just waiting for "Brain Damage" until one day I noticed the different guitar parts, the bass line, the drums, the keyboards, and suddenly I was blown away by it, no lyrics needed it's a beautiful piece of music.

    This particular song always triggers something I'm not sure I can describe but will try! It starts with an eargasm and targets a devine scensor giving me somewhat of a weightless experience. I know it is weird but it does what it does. Stacey, I've been re-experiencing Pink Floyd with all your reactions and am enjoying them A LOT! Happy Birthday and what a wonderful gift from your sister! Keep them coming one at a time, I am fine with that because I know you intend to get to full album reactions later. The best part about it is that the journey with PF will be that much longer and richer in my opinion.

    The title refers to the what Henry Ford said when asked what colours his model T car would be available in, he said "you can have any colour you like - as long as it's black!" It implies a false sense of choice, a Hobson's choice, the necessity of accepting one of two or more equally objectionable alternatives.

    This track is one of few on the Dark Side of the Moon album that I think should be played in "sets". Primarily because of the way the songs lead into each other. One example is Time/Great Gig in the Sky... The other is Any Color You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse.

  • @peter9962

    I see it as less of a song and more of a piece of music, which greets one song and bids farewell to another, and also a reason there are no lyrics. It's one of a few pieces that are the reason that this album MUST be listened to from beginning to end. That's why it really has no start or finish. I almost didn't watch this reaction for that reason, but I did because I enjoy watching your reactions.

    in my younger days, there were 2 albums that I played all the time and actually wore them out replacing several times. Yes one was Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and the other was Cheap Thrills with Janis Joplin. If you never reacted to Janis Joplin or want a good recommendation, I highly recommend Janis Joplin's Ball and Chain Live at Monterey Pop Festival. Like Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin changed what music I listened to but for different reasons.
