    Glad you found Sublime. Bradley struggled with substance abuse, especially heroin. This song uses metaphors to describe his battle. He was a brilliant song writer and a soulful singer.
    Their genre is usually defined as a mix of Ska, punk, reggae dub.
    Highly recommend you check out "Summertime / Doin Time" for vibes and soulful take on the classic song, "April 29th, 1992" a song about Rodney king riots, and "Date rape" for his story telling ability.
    Just months ago, Brad's son Jacob recently took over lead singing duties and reunited the original band members. They played Coachella the last two weeks and are planning to tour. He sounds very much like his father, check them out.

      Agreed! Another rappy one but with totally different vibes is Doin' Time. My fave version is the one with the Pharcyde feature, it was on the short album with What I Got (I think). There's just something so chill about the base line, with that drum that reminds me of Outcast's Rosa Parks' sonar sound (somehow the illest possible sound ever), and the cold AF chorus from Bradley:
      "Summertiiiime, and the livin's easy;
      Bradley on the microphone with Ras MG;
      All the people in the dance, will agree that we're -
      we're qualified to represent the L.B.C,
      me, me and Louie,
      We go r-r-r-r-r-run to da party and dance to the rythm!
      It gets haaaardeeeer... RAAARg."

      Agree about April 29th 1992!! Also a good fit for “white people music” discussing / being allies with the black community.
      Fun fact he says April 26th in the song which is the wrong date.
      You’d love all the early Sublime stuff.
      Their Genre would be Ska / reggae / hip hop IMO

    • @sistergiblits7795
      @sistergiblits7795 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@erichighwayThe song has nothing to do with “being an ally.”
      The song describes the anarchy and destruction the riots caused, and points blame at the police. It doesn’t talk at all about standing up for black people or any of that nonsense. The only mention of black people comes along with a mention of Mexican people. There’s one mention of race in the whole song and it’s not even directly aimed at what you’re talking about

      He was clean when they recorded this. He "celebrated" their success on the song "what i got" by using " one last time" and that "celebration " took his life right after the birth of his son jacob. Jacob is actually the new singer of Sublime with the original bassist and drummer. On a personal note.... stay strong! Ive been in and out of recovery since 2005 and now have 6 years straight under my belt. The early weeks/months SUCK A HUGE DICK. im not going to lie to you. But the end result is WORTH THE PAIN. you can grab control of your life back. You are stronger than you know. Love you brother

    Lou Dog! His Dalmatian doggo buddy. Lou Dog was their mascot. He took that Dog everywhere with him. I read that after Bradley Nowell passed, Lou Dog went into depression. So damn sad!
    In February 1990, Nowell purchased a Dalmatian puppy from an old man for $500, and named him "Louie" after his grandfather. Also referred to as "Lou Dog", he became a mascot for the band Sublime. Lou Dog was often allowed to wander the stage during concert performances. Louie was also often featured on the cover of Sublime albums, and was referred to in the lyrics of Sublime songs. In Sublime's most successful radio track, "What I Got", Nowell sings, "Livin' with Louie Dog's the only way to stay sane". Another prominent song by the band, "Garden Grove", mentions Lou Dog as such: "We took this trip to Garden Grove. It smelled like Lou Dog inside the van". Following Nowell's death in 1996, Lou Dog was cared for by Michael Happoldt, the band's manager. Lou Dog died from old age on September 17, 2001.

Sublime's influence on music of this era cannot be understated. You can see Sublime's influence on music still, in bands like "10ft Ganja Plant"

    Badfish is one of my favorite Sublime songs. And while it was actually written in 1989 prior to his struggles with heroine addiction that eventually claimed his life. This song proved to be analogous of his love of surf culture and partying. But also, in the end, prophetic as he himself ended up becoming a "Badfish" within a few short years of writing/recording this song. And I always find the line "Ain't got no money to spend" bittersweet. As, at the time he wrote the song, couldn't afford heroine, but was allured with it's notion. Then later starts to find success and subsequently the money that follows said success, and falls victim to heroine's demise.

He was a very cool person with tremendous talent that left us way too soon. I would love to live in a world where he was able to continue creating music because I know the best was yet to come, which says a lot since the only two albums the band releaed before his untimely death were both fantastic start to finish. Man they have so many good songs. Most of them are pretty chill like this and short it's an easy rabbit hole to go down. Caress me down and pawn shop are 2 of my favorites.

    Great first song to listen to for them! So many amazing songs. Bradley’s son is now lead singer with the band and they are currently touring.

    Fan since 1993- I even had the original 40 Oz. to freedom T- shirt with the "Skunk records" logo on back. Now I see that shirt at target and American eagle stores- but no judgment to that.

    40 oz. to Freedom is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's so freaking good. It's unique. I've never heard anything like it from any other band and yet it's extremely refined. I recommend listening to the whole thing, not just the hits. Some of the best songs on that album are the lesser known ones.

    This song has a deeper meaning, bradley was from lbc so the way he talked about reefs, and the water and badfish which also means addiction or someone whos a bad influence. Brad was ahead of his time!

    Good shit man, Sublime is super underrated. Love that you checked them out, they have a surprising amount of bangers given how short we were blessed with his soul. 3 studio albums, an alt cut album (Second Hand Smoke) and a fire live album (Stand By Your Van). They are a blend of rock/ska/reggae/punk w/ occasional hip hop undertones. For more Sublime to get started, check out:
    -Cisco Kid
    -Pawnshop
    -Were Only Gonna Die for our Arrogance
    -Don’t Push
    -Garden Grove
    -What I Got
    and my one of personal favorites…
    -Work That We Do from Stand by your Van album (live)
    To understand the beautiful tragedy of Bradley, give Poolshark a listen. It’s a slower song, but haunting AF
    Cheers
