I have a sad story. Ok so a while ago I saved up and bought my first snake. He was a gorgeous ball python. He was very under weight but and had a lot of stuck shed. After I got him the shed came off very quickly. But he refused to eat. I tried frozen thawed and live mice. The pet store told me that when they were feeding him they had to cover him. So i did and he still would not eat. I became very worried. Soon after I was holding him and decided to try and get him another mouse. I told my dad and he said we would go get the mouse the next day. That night I woke up and went to his tank and saw that his tail was in the water. I thought he just out for a soak so I went to the bathroom and when I came back he was still there. So I opened his enclosure and picked him up. He was ice cold with his mouth open and his substrate stuffed in it. I was so sad I started crying. My snake had died. After some research I found out that I had bought a sick snake. Now I’m mad about that and I’m still mourning him. Also just in case the zero people who will read this is interested I named him Ramen Noodle. He was loved
Note about if a breeder refuses to let you see a snake before buying: If you are a serious potential buyer, they will likely at least take the animal out themselves and let you look at it. So even if they don't want you handling it, you can still examine the animal.
Great tip. If they don't want *you* handling it, then they should at least handle it themselves so you can get a good look, and ask them to do the checking for you with you observing.
I'm so glad your giant hogs are taking off for you. This is a really important video, thank you for spreading such great information. Keep up the good work, Emily!

Ya know with the slender, flexible, patterned bodys of snakes they are probably photogenic. I can imagine snakes are graceful creatures especially since they slither so well, unless your scared of snakes it's easy to appreciate the beauty of them.
I've been doing A LOT of research on owning a pet snake, took my time to set up my enclosure & get everything nice & ready, & finally I'll be going to a reptile expo in a couple days!!! I'm super excited and I appreciate all of your helpful videos & advice. Love your channel so much!! Sneeekkkkk
This is really useful! Thank you! Could you also make a video on how to find a reputable breeder please? I've heard horror stories about how snakes are kept in horrid conditions and I don't want to contribute to someone who abuses their snakes.
A good first step is finding a small-time breeder within travel distance of you if possible, that way you can visit their snake room and observe how their animals are kept (see their Enclosure sizes, hygiene levels, if they're co-habbing, etc) any breeder that refuses to show you where/how their animals are kept is usually bad news. Also you'll ideally want to physically inspect the snake (basically everything said in this video) that you want in person before handing over any money, also ask how old it is, what weight it is and ask to see that snakes records if they have any (Breeders that keep records is a good sign!) Also ask if they can show you a feeding/video of a feeding as dodgy breeders can lie about what type of food a snake is on, if their husbandry and records look good this isn't too big a deal but it's happened to me once before. On another note, them asking you questions like what type of enclosure you'll be keeping the snake in and what kind equipment and animal/reptile experience you have is also a good sign, shows that they care where their animal is going :)
That really sucks. Just bought my second snake and can't wait to handle her but I'm giving her time to settle in to her enclosure. Yep just googled new zealand and snake and it isn't home to any native snake species. That really sucks, you could always try a lizard?
I love this video, I vollentiered at the Staten Island Zoo in the 70s. Not to be sextist but I love to see a woman who knows her stuff. I've collected snakes for over 50 years and you bring a breath of fresh air to this hobby. Thank you.
This has rlly helped and ur channel I'm 11 and even though when my parents were younger had snakes I was always scared if them but this makes me really happy about snakes and I really want one so I asked my mum and might be getting one so this is gonna really help me out thank you for your channel 😁
This video came at an excellent time since I’m going out tomorrow to buy my very first snake (western hognose) at a reptile expo in Denmark. Love the content so keep up the good work! (I already have reptiles just no snakes)
Hi! I just wanted to say thank you. I purposely started watching your channel to desensitize myself to snakes. I've always had a little bit of a phobia and I wanted to get over it. Now I'm watching the hatching videos and actually thinking the babies are cute! Thanks for making your videos!
Hi Emily! It's Jackie the one that emailed you. I enjoy your videos they are so educational! Where were you when I got my first snake? 🤣 Such a beautiful snake! She looks so healthy! Have a wonderful day!

I've been binge watching this channel for the last two days. I had no idea reptiles were so fascinating! Super entertaining and educational at the same time
Great info, thank you! I'm also glad to see the topic of overly inbred snakes being adressed (it's not often mentioned, unfortunately). And looking forward to meeting your new bullsnakes!
I think a video on elderly snakes would be great! I have an adopted 20 year corn snake and I'm not quite sure what to look for in terms of any discomfort due to his age and it doesn't seem to be a widely talked about topic (and I know you've had snakes pass away from old age before)
My dad told me he used to kill snakes for a living when he was my age (14) and continued to do it until he was 19. I didn’t know how to feel about it, because back then I didn’t care when he told me but now I feel kinda bad. He told me that he mostly killed rattlesnakes and any other snake they wanted him to kill.
Can you please do a video on snakes you can get that don't eat rodents (Garters/egg-eaters) And where to buy them (If you know any breeders) Thx for the vid
Getting my first albino female bp in two days! She’s super cute and has this soft pastel yellow, I love it. Breeder looks like a great guy, has a whole operation and CZcams channel, and he’s local. 21 months at 720ish grams.
I bought my first snake online from a breeder that I no longer support. He came to me with stuck shed and a head-wobble that I was not informed of. I've had him for a year now and even though I am disappointed in the breeder, I still love my snake. He is extremely healthy with me, hasn't had a bad shed since the first one (first snake so I goofed the humidity the first time he shed with me), he eats like a champ (which I was scared about since he's a ball python), and the head-wobble has gone away but he moves around with a slight head tilt. The information in this video is extremely helpful and I will put it to use in the future when I find the right time to get another snake.
This was actually a really helpful video because I'm thinking about getting a snake in a few months! Even though I've read lot's of articles by snake owners about for what to look at when buying a snake this video actually taught me for what to look at on the snake! Many articles where about “is the enclosure clean“, “come back a few times to see if the enclosure gets cleaned/if other snakes are put into the enclosure without cleaning it“, etc. Many didn't really talk about the snake itself. Also I've never read about signs of inbreeding so that was a great thing to hear!
Ya know ,.. I really think you guys make great videos and my wife and I are a fairly new snake keeping couple , a few years ago I finally talked her into starting a collection and now she’s worse than me with wanting more species and pairs lmao 😂 I’ve always lived for reptiles but her change of heart was incredible and your videos couldn’t of been more helpful, Thanks
Speaking as a parent, the first things you do before ever asking is to make sure your bedroom stays clean, all your chores are done to the best of your abilities without having to be threatened, doing your absolute best in school, and overall keeping a good attitude. @@mistahroger698I’m not very educated on spider bp’s but I’ve heard they have health issues and drown themselves in their water bowls sometimes. I’m not sure If this info is correct tho
@@mistahroger698I’m also not entirely educated on the topic so take my words with a grain of salt but the genetic morph that leads to a spider also tends to lead to neurological problems. Just like breeding a horse and a donkey make a sterile mule because of the genetic morphing. I have heard that it doesn’t always happen with spider morphs but you’re taking a big chance when you get one because you just don’t know
@@tianarhastings8372Just to clarify, breeding a donkey and a horse won't result in an animal with neurological problems. The spider gene causes difficulty eating, stargazing, corkscrewing, and the typical "wobble". Generally speaking, their quality of life is negatively impacted, and in my personal opinion it's kinder not to breed them. Edit: spelling
For most species of snake the females will be larger because the bigger she is the more eggs she can have t ensure survival of offspring. There is always variation though and a female can be below average for her sex and a male could be above average.
I'm using your channel to learn how to care for snakes and how to make sure they're healthy. My mother hates snakes, but I love them and wish to have some. So I'm trying to learn all I can about snake and reptile care so I know what to do when I finally get one of my own
Jayatron 2005 your badly structured sentence implies that you are most likely very young. Your comment does look creepy though. Gushing over someone in their comment section screams creeper/ neck beard
I absolutely love how educational and honest your programs are! I've loved your youtube account for a while and I'm so glad you still are making new videos! I'm serious about buying a hognose snake as an emotional support animal, but I'm worried about whether the places I find sellers online are trustworthy or not. If you have any hognoses for sale or have suggestions on good sellers I may be able to find then that would be fantastic!
Hello, I know I am late though since you did not yet a reply I desided to say somthing. If you are comfortable with handling snakes you should be just fine doing these things as long as the breeder allows you to... now even if the breeder let's you open it's mouth, I would suggest just listening instead of going for that for it is just a bit more difficult to do if you are not used to it. I suppose if the breeder is good with helping you, that is a possibility though still would be careful especially if you don't know them well. Please have a wonderful day and I wish you luck if you do decide to get a lovely little danger noodle!
I've never considered getting a snake but recently I became obsessed with this channel and it makes me really want a snake of my own. This is such a great channel, I love all the information and personality in every video.
Did you get a snake? I've been researching how to care for a snake for 6 years and I finally got one ^^ He just moved in 4 days ago and already ate, even explored his terrarium during the first night
It's also a good idea to educate yourself on the various problems certain color morphs might have for each species of snake. For example, it's fairly well known now that the spider gene in ball pythons can cause neurological issues like a head wobble and problems with balance.
I’ve been watching this channel so much that I had a dream that there was a snake in my house and it was brilliant. I think my subconscious wants a snake haha.
I found this channel one night and I’ve been watching since, good quality vids, I’ve had snakes since... forever I guess and I love all my scaly friends, I used to catch garter snakes and give them a meal then release them and I realize now it isn’t the best practice but it was more to get acquainted with garter snakes than anything, we’ve had so many baby snakes from the garters over the years and it’s been such an experience
Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! I have been watching your videos for months in preparation for our first snake purchase. We want to be good snake owners and have never owned a reptile before so comments/tips from anyone are more than welcome!!
Thank you for all this information! I'm probably getting an internship at a reptile center and don't know much about snakes. All of your videos are really helping me
I just lost my snake not to long ago. I'm thinking of getting a new one someday so this was very very educational and helpful for me. Thank you! Also you did forget another thing...maybe if you haven't done it already make a video about how to identify if it was possibly a wild caught snake.
Okay, really I don't like snakes because they have venom and I don't want them to bite, but now I feel more braver to handle these! Again, thank you for all your amazing and educational videos!!!
Not every snake has venom, even if you get bit by a snake it doesn't hurt. I own a ball python i can guarantee you that it doesn't have venom and they're harmless if you handle them often.
My retics always have a whistle noise when they breathe. I havent noticed any other symptoms of a URI tho. Im a little worried something is wrong, but I dont have a big reason to go to the vet over it if there is no other symptom
Hasn't your nostril ever made a whistling noise? It's usually due to stuck substrate or shed in the nostril. Not much of a symptom of RI if you aren't also hearing gurgling or bubbling.
I have no real interest in herpetology but man, I subscribed! You're so interesting and engaging that I just want to learn more about these animals. I have a weird conditional fear of snakes- live ones are fine, dead ones freak me the Hell out.
Thank you so much for this video, I'm planning on adopting a beautiful albino sunkissed cornsnake this Sunday off someone who no longer wants him. This will be my first snake and I've done as much extensive research as possible, I watched and love your channel before I even made the decision to get a snake but your channel has given me so much help and advice. I currently have a beardie that I love more than the world and I'd hate to bring an ill animal into the area that could potentially put him at risk of illness too so this video has explained to me very clearly what I need to look for and how to correctly spot them. Thank you so much I love your channel 💚
Chris Batrynchuk I would recommend going to a reptile expo if u want ur first snake because it has everything u need and there will also be many breeder that u can ask for question but don’t automatically believe everything they say so do ur own research
Wow thanks so much for the great info and tips!! The first snake I bought was a baby ball python and I was smitten from the first unblinking stare, but alas I was a novice. It wasn't until later that I discovered that he was VERY thin. I had asked the shop keep but they assured me that it was just because he was a baby. They also recommended that I feed him one pinky a week. I can already hear the horrified gasps from the audience. I, with the info and recommendations from people I THOUGHT to be knowledgeable, was effectively starving my under weight BABY snake. Though thankfully I did more research and noticed in time. Now he is a chubby, happy, rapidly growing, beautiful boy~! (I will never buy from that store again.) This story is for first time snake keepers. It's ok to make mistakes, everyone does. Learn from them and share with others. Always aim to improve, never linger on your failures. And love your scaly babies~!
Lol I don’t even own a snake but I just happen to stumble across them in the recommendations from CZcams n been hooked sense. I currently have two dogs n 2 huge empty cages (1 reptile/amphibious tank) n 1 huge critter condo for bunnies, ferrets, or rats. N now I wanna fill them lol ty Emily!!
Thanks for this awesome video. I'm going to a reptile expo next weekend to get my first snake. I've always wanted a snake, but have only had leopard geckos for the past 6 yrs. Luckily, I have a brother who has owned various species of pet snakes and will be coming with me to help pick out the right snake, and so I don't go crazy and buy more than 1 snake. But glad I also have this info for myself to use.
I have a sad story. Ok so a while ago I saved up and bought my first snake. He was a gorgeous ball python. He was very under weight but and had a lot of stuck shed.

Now I’m mad about that and I’m still mourning him. Also just in case the zero people who will read this is interested I named him Ramen Noodle. He was loved
I’m sorry, this is my worst fear for buying a pet.
Yeah. It was pretty upsetting but now thanks to this video I know what to look for next year when I try again
I would tell the pet store if I can have my money back
Sorry to hear about that. I lost my first snake as well a few months ago...it sucks :(

I was afraid of snakes but when I found your channel I learned that there’s nothing to fear about them as a pet. I really wanna take care of one now.
I love watching your videos and wish I could have a snake. can you do a vid about size differences from females and male thanks
Ooh, yeah I was thinking about that yesterday. I was wondering if males or females were bigger/longer.
Michigan TheBest Females will almost always be bigger
For most species of snake the females will be larger because the bigger she is the more eggs she can have t ensure survival of offspring. There is always variation though and a female can be below average for her sex and a male could be above average.
I'm using your channel to learn how to care for snakes and how to make sure they're healthy. My mother hates snakes, but I love them and wish to have some. So I'm trying to learn all I can about snake and reptile care so I know what to do when I finally get one of my own
Anybody else thinks she really pretty by her looks and her knowledge mostly??? Like if you agree! ♥️
I love her so much don't you think! She is the best
Jayatron 2005 creeper alert
@@spuburq I'm not a creep I just admire knowledge.
Jayatron 2005 your badly structured sentence implies that you are most likely very young. Your comment does look creepy though. Gushing over someone in their comment section screams creeper/ neck beard
Just saying somebody already put a ring on her
I absolutely love how educational and honest your programs are!
I’ve never bought a snake, but I want to buy one soon. Would I be qualified to do all these checks? Could I ask the breeder to help me?
GIANT MADAGASCAR HOGNOSES SKSKSKS MORE PLEASE!!!!!
I love the checkered markings on that first snake, it's a very pretty noodle.
I Don't even Have a Snake!? Love your Channel!🤗❤
That Madagascar Hognose at the beginning is BEAUTIFUL. 💕
Who else likes the video before they watch it?
Me
Yup! Me too! I do it so I won't forget to lol
Wait...
Ur supposed to like after u watch the vid..?
Kk 🤣same
It's also a good idea to educate yourself on the various problems certain color morphs might have for each species of snake. For example, it's fairly well known now that the spider gene in ball pythons can cause neurological issues like a head wobble and problems with balance.
I’ve been watching this channel so much that I had a dream that there was a snake in my house and it was brilliant. I think my subconscious wants a snake haha.
Im planning to buy a snake but i didnt know anything about snakes! But your channel is helping me a lot.
Thanks for helping me!! :)
You are a cool chick. Your husband is a lucky man. I personally hate snakes. But I love your channel.😘
At least someone loves reptiles. 😁
I am so glad you do not use clickbait, I hate channels that do that and I take pride in the fact you do not use click bait. Keep up the great work!
Limitless Beast it’s ok, you can say Brian Barcyzk.

You made me wanna get a snake in the future QwQ
Anyway love your videos!
I love the end when she is trying to get the burmese python.
This helped me for when I have enough money to buy myself a snake
I don’t have nearly enough yet I only have $170 so far
I've been doing my research but this video still came out at the perfect time as I am most likely buying a snake tomorrow.
Hi I'm so early!! I love your channel I used to be so scared of snakes and you have made me love them!! I want a pet snake but my mom protests!!
Thanks for the info ,Snake Discovery
Such beautiful sneks! I love them all, and that berm has a really beautiful pattern that I haven't seen before.
I am a new subscriber and love your channel!!! Keep it up
Thanks guys for liking my comment even tho it’s a little thx. Guys thanks for being kind :)

Miller Family Mayhem what?
@@animallover7490You are welcome for the likes :)
Miller Family Mayhem awww thanks you are so kind
Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! I have been watching your videos for months in preparation for our first snake purchase. We want to be good snake owners and have never owned a reptile before so comments/tips from anyone are more than welcome!!
I love you are you reptiles and all your facts
Thank you for all this information! I'm probably getting an internship at a reptile center and don't know much about snakes. All of your videos are really helping me
I like snakes now
I just lost my snake not to long ago. I'm thinking of getting a new one someday so this was very very educational and helpful for me. Thank you! Also you did forget another thing...maybe if you haven't done it already make a video about how to identify if it was possibly a wild caught snake.
You are awsome
When im big i want to be like you your (the best)
Thank you so much for this video, I'm planning on adopting a beautiful albino sunkissed cornsnake this Sunday off someone who no longer wants him. This will be my first snake and I've done as much extensive research as possible, I watched and love your channel before I even made the decision to get a snake but your channel has given me so much help and advice. I currently have a beardie that I love more than the world and I'd hate to bring an ill animal into the area that could potentially put him at risk of illness too so this video has explained to me very clearly what I need to look for and how to correctly spot them. Thank you so much I love your channel 💚
Could you buy one at the pet store sorry for the stupid question I'm new to pet snakes
Some stores don't sell snakes but places like PetSmart usually do
Thank you Momo Banana
We ended up getting a ball python from petsmart. He was young, but healthy and a good size. He’s pretty happy now that we’ve got him home. 🤷♀️😬💜
Chris Batrynchuk I would recommend going to a reptile expo if u want ur first snake because it has everything u need and there will also be many breeder that u can ask for question but don’t automatically believe everything they say so do ur own research
Thanks guys for your information I do appreciate it
Wow thanks so much for the great info and tips!!

I don’t have a snake, but I really want one. Your videos are really helpful.
Um I just want comment because well I want to say thank you but I don't know how so hiiiii
