Planting and plants for Dry Shade

  • The new serpentine path gives more scope for planting the new serpentine borders - in dry shade. Bunny gives advice on how to plant (soaking plants, ‘cubing’ or slitting the roots so that new root hairs are encouraged, watering in and mulching) plus recommends plants she finds good for dry shade. These include Martagon lilies (Lilium martagon ‘Orange Marmalade) Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Wim’s Red’, Persicarias, certain ferns and more. Surprisingly certain hydrangeas perform well in dry conditions - the ‘hydra’ part of their name is not because they love water as is often quoted but because the seed capsules resemble cups.
Bunny talks about choosing the style of planting - here she has gone for a more naturalistic style rather than blocks of planting. Even though its naturalistic planting there is still structure, a low serpentine Sarcococca hedge (S. hookeriana var ‘humilis) to add fragrans and definition during the winter months.

Nice little highlight, the little dog trotting down your lovely undulating path. You were right. So much more fun than a straight path.

Goodness I've learned more from this stunning woman in a couple of minutes than what I've learned in years from books.
Bunny I am waiting for your invite to come to you for training.

I have white martagon lilies from my childhood home that must be over 50 years old that still flower well. The scent , a strong, musky, one, reminds me of sneaking in very late on a saturday night/sunday morning as a teenager!! Love them.

Bunny, this is exactly the gardening video that I enjoy ... packing in an established bed, using / propagating plants from other areas of your garden, naturalizing, and your doggie that follows the path :) All so lovely! Cannot wait to see it in a few weeks! Thank you!!!

I have 15’x25” strip that is full shade, zone 10b in Southern California . I’m struggling. It flips from looking too sparse to too sloppy. You have found the perfect balance. I’m going to study your plant suggestions and hopefully I can succeed as you have. You are such an inspiration. I just found your channel and I am enjoying it immensely. Thank you🌻💛🌻

Shady areas are a challenge. Pulling plants from similar areas where you have too many is solid advice. I've pruned roots on potted plants for years when transplanting. Friends freak out when they see me do it, but your logic is sound. Cutting back stimulates more growth. I wear old extra long flared jeans over leggings when I garden. The flare covers my boots (I need lace up work boots, and thank goodness I had them on yesterday when I stepped in a hole and sprained (rather than broke) my ankle) and keeps the dirt (and earwigs) out of my socks. Your little dog is darling. It was fun to watch him/her following the serpentine path. :)

I wish you would write a book and capture all this knowledge in one place. I have completely changed my (very amateur) ideas about gardens since starting to watch your videos several years ago - especially the ones about 'Thyme'. The best gardens I now recognize, are about hard landscaping, different materials, topiary, pots, small trees and shrubs - not flowers. Flowers are just a Sugar Rush. Sarah Ravens book (A Year full of Flowers) is good, but I am convinced you could do something far, far better. Needless to say, I enjoy and look forward to these videos!

I’m eager to watch this dry shade garden develop and bloom. I have a dry deep shade garden I’ve been working on with a lot of deer and rabbit pressure. I am waiting on an order of martigon lilies to arrive and may try them in this area…🤷‍♀️.
They might want a little more sun than what I can offer them.

Bunny could you do a walk through video of your property ? How the areas flow and also with your drafting pictures? I'm trying to create a 10 acre property. Almost nothing but bald prairie but I have to admit I'm copying you a bit. For example I have rows of peonies so I'm creating a peony / lilac garden .
Zone 3 so no boxwood :(.
Thinking of miniature lilac to surround the peonies with dark purple lilacs scattered around the perimeter
