Your videos are so relaxing. Love it!
+Matas Ragauskas Thank you.
+Wranglerstar the second angle
+Matas Ragauskas I agree! I've been away for a while on a Casey Neistat stint and coming back to Wranglerstar makes me feel like I'm coming home. Gives me the warm and fuzzy's.
I vote for the second option- 13:22
Cody when will we get back to the basics! Those videos are my favorite of all time. Thanks for replying on comments it really means a lot
your videos are soo calm and just pleasing to watch especially after a long day of school or something
keep up the good work
Hey Mr. W i really enjoy your videos and how you like to showcase how things were done in the past. Your music choices always seem perfectly matched to the videos you make and work with your personality and the calm demeanor the videos tend to have. It sure would be nice to see a credit to the musicians you utilize in your videos down in the video description. That way we can check out who those artists are and all the music they have to offer. Thanks for your hard work and making your videos and experiences available for all of those who enjoy learning this way of life.
I love when you teach about different things your doing, I learn so much. It's always a blessing being able to gain more knowledge
+Derek Risser Thank you
Cody, i never thought you would be the type to like The Doors. Thank you for proving me wrong lol.
+saltywok Good Music is Good Music. You won't find Cody wearing a Che' T-Shirt.
always a joy to see a great craftsman with great tools.
this sir is why i love watching your videos, most technical videos from machining to woodworking i watch are all about doing the job, not many videos ive found have the design process of the common man, tool information etc good job on the videos ive watched a ton keep it up. Thumbs all the way from Australia Mate!
This series reminds me of when I first started watching your channel. Hopefully you can find the time to do more timber framing material. Thanks for sharing this.
Another great video, I just found myself talking to the video when you were trying to figure out which way to put the angle on the post. Thanks for sharing, look forward to seeing the finished product
With each video of wranglestar i watch i am more impressed how great your skills are Cody!! can,t wait to see the mailbox complete!!
Your videos are very relaxing and your enthusiasm for woodwork is infectious i want to go home now and do some home improvements
I love the drill, it is so perfect and uses the persons body weight to stop it moving. I have an electric mortise drill but I seldom use it because it takes so long to set up and is awkward to use on the of the size you were using. I also love your videos, you have a natural way of showing how to do something without coming over as "better then others". Keep up the good work
Great looking mortise. I agree with the consensus to angle away from the box. Looking forward to the next one!
Interesting follow up. I've never heard anybody have much to say about the long-term use of these things. I've been apprehensive for the same reasons. Thanks!
I like the angle sloped towards the rear, as a matter of look and function. In my mind I would want the rain water running off the angle to go towards the rear where is won't be landing on the cross bar and/or the mailbox. Great video, love watching them, keep them coming and thank you!
It was Cody, as much a delight to watch that ole veteran work horse tool that set the standard, in use! Thank you!!
I miss these type of videos! This is what got me hooked on your channel. Thanks!
loving this series, gonna serch for more timber framing videos on your channel now.
I agree the angle looks better sloped to the rear.
+windersranger1 agree and the dowel pins can be behind the upright timber
I liked the Mr Morrison quote - I'm not sure how many people got it :)
As soon as he said it i started singing it in my head and then he confirmed the reference and I got a big grin on my face.
Wow! Great job. I love to see work done without the use of power tools. The work itself becomes part of the beauty of the finished piece.
Cody, could you do a bit of framining in oak sometime? I would like to hear your commentary on the comparison with pine!
+Glyn Tutt Two things. I don't have any oak on my property. I don't frame with pine I frame with fir,
Great job. Love the wood. Looks wonderful.
As a commercial chef, I used to drill into my apprentices that old saying ; A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Make your knife edges a thing of beauty and enjoy them !
Nice shirt! I have 1 play and 2 rewinds! All treasured!
Great video! I really enjoy the "stuff happens" project videos
A few minutes ago I was researching Gifford Pinchot NF for my photography trips... This made me think to check if you had posted any new videos about this build... a couple minutes later your notification of posting comes through! Hah! Good timing!
As soon as you said: "Break on through," I thought: "to the other side." Then you said it!
Oh, and you have a wnderful way with words, too. Luxuries ARE luxurious. Brilliant! ;o)
Good call on where you are having the angle. Great job on the project big W.
Great video as always. I would put the angle facing away from the mail box. Also I agree with logcabinlooms comment about the bracing not interfering with the work of the snow plow. You could have the cross piece go further on the back of the post and attach the brace between the extended cross piece on the side facing away from the mail box. It would then support the cross piece by pulling on it from the other side instead of pushing on it on the mail box side. Probably not as strong as the latest one, but with good joinery it will be plenty strong, although with a lot more work needed to do it.
You are very fortunate to have such a abundance of good quality wood of many different Verities in your country. Here in England, we a quite limited. With that, timber is expensive, as most of it is imported. Oh by the way, we call that design a gallows post.
awesome! love the hand tool work!
Thanks as always for the great content, Cody!
I'd slope it away as others have pointed out, shed water away from your mailbox, not that it means all that much where you are. Aesthetically I think it would look better also.
that going to make a very nice mailbox it is so frustrating when people can't respect your property. when it happened to me I cemented a large rural mailbox mounted in a sheet metal and plywood shroud so it looked like a huge mailbox. I cemented a metal pipe (4" ) in the ground with a flat metal plate welded to it I mounted the box to the pipe stand and painted the box with bright cheery colors and had my spouse embellish it and we waited. about two months later I was leaving the range to go to work and I found an aluminum base ball bat beside the mailbox and window glass on the ground. a Deputy sheriff stopped by a day later asking about the mailbox. he was investigation a teen age boy that was injured when a bat impacted my mailbox and the bat was whipped back breaking the glass on the car five high school kids were riding. the bat and glass hit this kid on the noggin causing cuts and a goose egg! Bat vs mailbox=bat&car fail! the parents of the this kid had the nerve to try to get money out of me for the injuries because they had to take him to the emergency room. they actually questioned why I had such a fortified mail box! DUH!
+darangemaster1 Picture PLEASE.
+darangemaster1 // Many people in Sandpoint, Idaho have a mail box hanger that resembles gallows. Then hang the mail box itself from chains. It seems that it's the SNOWPLOWS that do the most damage up there! So the box has give when blasted by a fast snow plow.
+darangemaster1 For several weeks, we were awakened on Saturday night by the sound of our mailbox being run down. We'd fix it up best we could, bend the flimsy metal support pipe back, and go on. Till one night we were awakened by a tremendous CRASH, followed by an engine whose fan belt squealed as the fan rang against metal. They got away, but the local Big Ignorant New Black Pickup Owned by a Person of No Known Legal Job developed a distinct V shape in the front...
I wonder if our filling the pipe with cement had anything to do do with it...

EPIC! I feel bad for the hooligan, but that's comeuppance!
Robert Cookson sorry brother thats been 20 years ago but it wasn't difficult. i basically used 3/4 ply for the base and front/back back solid front with a hole to expose the door . i used some sheet aluminum to strike the ark and made the outer bigger that the mailbox i put screw in the bottom not all the way in various places on the ply wood back and bottom to help old the the concrete to the ply. . i poured some mud into the back with the opening up . taped the door so mud wouldnt get in the box. set the box and poured mud around the sides. up to the door but not over. place the opening ply in place and shoot a couple of screws in the sheet metal to hold the front ply in place. i made the post out of a 3" piece of galvanized conduit and a 3" sweep and coupler welded together with a plate on top.of the horizontal part of the sweep. bolt through the plate into the ply and bada bing!
Yet another great video. Please keep em comin.
Great video. agreed whit your choice on the angle
I would go with the bevel facing away from the mailbox. Are you going to plane in any curves, for example in the kneebrace? Would look nice certainly.
congratulations Cody, you have leveled up your mortise chopping, glad you found Paul Sellers. :)
I like the angle facing backwards, not only for aesthetics, but functionally, with directing water away from the box, and me personally, I would mount a sign or plaque on the flat side on the front.
I use the Robert Sorby Cabinet-Makers chisel best chisel I've been able to find. I'll have to try those timber framing chisel.
angle to rear for sure! added bonus is that you don't get rain run-off dripping onto the other piece of wood and towards your mailbox
MUSIC, New? Good?
GREAT, LOVE NEW INTRO SONG!!!
I like the angle sloping towards the back as well. From a practical point of view, do you want draining water to fall on the weight bearing side or on the run out side? The run out side for sure since you are going to dowel the intersection the back side will only look bad if it rots prematurely.
Hi Cody, very great video. can i answer if the stones are you using in the video are good to sharpen knifes?
This is gonna be a pretty big mailbox !
The chiselling song is Aurora - Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1), trying to find the opening tune
+James Anderson I heard Aurora's song Conqueror on a local pop radio station here in New Zealand last night (was in the wife's car). Cool to hear it out there but a little bit sad to hear it mainstream!
+Patrick Rebecca Doohan It is OK to like things that are popular :)
Great video Cody.I would have the angles so that they go away from the mailbox so that the rain would shed away from the mailbox. The more moisture you put away from where the box sits the better in my opinion. Less chance for the wood to take weather damage over time.
Congrats on 350k!!
Nice to hear your purchase from England; I used to work at Jessop saville's in Sheffield where we made knives etc. Now it's all gone, a real shame as we used to produce some lovely steel :/
Glad you went with the post sloping away. Was casting my vote aloud from mid video.
Could you seal the end grain with some hot beeswax? Maybe the buried portion as well. Heard you mention some kind of sealant in the previous video.
it's going to look great
I've always liked your videos and then you go and quote Doors lyrics. Now I am a subscriber for life.
This following quote, I'm keeping it for for myself in the future, "Sometimes luxuries are, luxurious." - Mr Wranglerstar
I liked the musical reference there in the middle. I sometimes do that in my gaming videos ;)
When those shirts came out i always wanted one but never had any money at the time, i hope they have them again.
Loves the little Doors reference. You should add some of their songs into your videos. The tune Riders on the storm would fit in perfectly. Many great songs by them to choose from!
I love this video series
Great upload
Thanks for the great video
Love the Doors reference!
...A corner chisel.
How have I never seen one of those before? It's invention is so painfully obvious but I've never even thought about it.
Angle the post away from mailbox. Then add a small roof to help protect the joints for the water. This will help make the project last longer and give a small amount of protection to the mailbox and newpaper tubes. If you can have your metal mailbox powder coated and baked to give a lifetime finish. I did this for my parents and theirs is as good as the day I made it 25 years ago. Regards, BAG2
I like the addition of the music
Loved the doors reference
Great work With some old hand tools
There needs to be a spotify channel for all the music you put on your videos!
I like the second option as well. Make any water run off the back, rather than towards the mailbox
Any way you can use that angle on top in the cross brace? I tend to like parallel lines even if they aren't strait up/down or left/right. Just a thought for the design.
Cody, I was taught to score the lines with the chisel including the corners before chopping. It that the difference in technique you reference that you used to use?
I was just sitting here thinking how much ur like my dad and granddad with ur tools and I remember when I was a kid and used my dads tools and left them out in the yard one time oooohhh he was mad he said my dad had that for 20 years and it never rusted you had it one day and look at it he then proceded to take my 8 year old self into the shop and took down every tool and made me clean and oil every single one just so I would understand what it took to take care of something and how important tools are I am 35 now and have never sbused a tool since lol
A lesson taught is a lesson learned
Good job
Hi Cody, more timber framing vids please ;-)Timber framing FTW ;-)Best wishes from Sweden...John
Hey Cody the angle should run towards the back to shed snow
I agree with you on the angle, I will suggest the tenon be 2 in. proud.
The reveal portion of the thru-arm should be a set fraction of the width of the post. Do not use a half as the eye fights with that ratio. A natural proportion is one third.
that chisel is sweet
yes it is end driling tool
More Aurora? I love it! Brilliant song to compliment a brilliant video
I had a client of mine give me an old axe I cant find any markings on it to identify what it is do you have any pointers on how to identify one?
I feel like there was a missed opportunity to of made a mailbox that looked like an ax... Idk I think coming from you it would've been very cool.
Love the videos and keep up the great work!!!
I like how it looks sloping away from the mailbox.
you mention all the better advantages that doing it this way offers, but a big key is also it is much safer than modern day power tools.
I agree the top looks better sloping to the back. You might also putting a slight chamfer on the portion of the cross piece that sticks out beyond the post so it will shed the water that comes of the top of the post.. I'm not so worried about the cross piece as I am about the water getting into the mortise . Just a thought.
Poor MrsW, waiting for the kitchen to be finished while MrW is off timberframing... ;-) ;-)
I wonder if the corner chisel is more for defining the corners rather than cleaning them up?
Top slope away from the mail box
Tenon goes all the way through about 4 to 6 inches and then use a mortise hole and wedge to drawn in the mail box support
I think the slant to the back. Also what about a pin in the piece that sticks out the rear as well as the dowels? As always beautiful job, taking the time to measure and cut once is the best way.
Cody.. What type of mallet do you use. Have you ever turned one from a good hickory baseball bat.. They make great mallets, but not sure for those big chisels. Love your work ethic .. Mike
Anyone know the song at 7:20? I've looked for here I go but that comes up with another song
Sloped to the back. Will keep the water off the main crosspiece. It will stay drier and help keep any moisture out of the mortise where rot can set in.
What is the name of the song that you play in the beginning of your videos?
Muscle memory is a term I have used. A lot of people don't understand the term and I tell them it is just like walking. You don't actually have to tell your right foot to move forward and then your left foot and so on. It just comes naturally. Same goes for most sports, basketball, darts, pool, to name some.
Hahaha was not expecting the doors reference...that's awesome
dude your logo shirt is awesome
9:16 "Break On Through" - You mean "Thank you Mr Mortise-son" ... :)
What’s the name of the song at the beginning? I’ve been looking since this video was published!!!
I think you should have it sloped to the back, that will keep the rain water, that runs off the post, away from your mailbox. It will also reduce the weather wear on the Mailbox.
Option 2. Hope all is well!
Personally I'd have hung the mailbox with chains from the cross beam. With a sturdy mailbox you provide the bad people with something to hit that won't break. Kind of like a Wranglerstar challenge to the local mailbox hit & run kids.
+Paul Keating Hahahaha, the mental picture I just got of the mailman delivering on a windy day! :-p
or mount on tip with a break away base
+myfoodexperiments *top
Hahahaha have to laugh watching you on that new exercise machine (drill)....
