Oof, watching this video made my jaw hurt... What's the craziest superstition or story around dental hygiene that you've heard of? (I'm a big fan of George Washington's insane variety of fake chompers personally)
Edit: Whoa, y'all really like the gross stuff huh? That's awesome, but we want to clarify: the bit between Rob and Matt is a joke Rob himself wrote for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, dental phobias are incredibly common and we wanted to make sure we didn't squick out anyone unnecessarily. Two, because dental medicine stagnated for a while during the Medieval era, the joke let us bridge ancient dentistry to more modern dentistry smoothly. Three, we didn't actually remove all that much detail from the procedures and tried to leave in enough that the bold of heart and strong of stomach and could go searching themselves, if they wanted to. But for those who want it, here's the elaboration from Rob:
ROMAN CIRCULAR SAW: Basically, they'd trephine the infected tooth open, then pack it with arsenic killing the nerve.
RED-HOT POKER: This was Celsus. When a gum ulcer did not respond to vinegar and chewing unripe pears and apples (?) he recommended cauterizing it with a red-hot iron (?!).
AS A MOUTHWASH?: Romans believed urine was a great mouthwash, especially the urine of young boys. Apparently, kids would make money by hanging out in alleys with cups for this purpose. (Oh, the glory that was Rome!)
ST. APPOLONIA: We covered it in the episode. Depending on the story a mob/Roman soldiers pulled out her teeth before her martyrdom.
And that's really it. Next week's episode is much more straightforward.
You couldve included the fact that Peter the Great was a dentist too
i wanna know that stuff... like please try and gross me out and just tell me damit
Show the nasty version! >:3
Would there be a way to read or hear the "gross" research/methods?

Tbf I do think that miiiight actually be because this episode is sponsored by a health checkup program; the sponsor prooobably didnât too many gruesome details when theyâre trying to get kids to approach health in a positive way. @@schmurble2254 but this was back in the day and they are a health clinicthere's a bunch of gross discussing details both in the past and present about surgery and dental care I feel like that's not an excuse
If you are going to omit "unpleasant" parts of the video for the feelings of some viewers, could you have a second upload of the missing parts because its just making me want to click off the video tbh
The half-joke explanatory-asides felt very unnecessary and distracting. The initial explanation of why details are missing, plus a link to a "full" video would have been sufficient.
Humor has never been the narrator's strong suit. I preferred the old one's elegance

better yet, make the video uncencored to begin with and put a link to the censored version below, or just, ya know, have some integrity and don't censor it to begin with.
The flu pandemic series was one of my favourites. People need to know, they need to appreciate how dangerous microorganisms are, and how even the most innocuous-seeming cold or flu (in a society of rapid world travel) could be the beginning of the end.

@@manekrudolph728 yet that hold nothing to the people who actually experienced the event
Are you seriously saying there was backlash over the graphic nature of the Flu Pandemic series?
Some people said ew gross so that means teaching history was a mistake
Welcome to progressivism
@@Lazypackmule That's... Not at all how that works.
These history episodes are sometimes played in schools, and if they get too gruesome they can violate rating limitations for what can be shown in class without a permission slip saying their parents consent to their child watching it, which can lead to parent backlash against the school(s).
The parents most prominent in this regard tend to be parents with conservative Christian values, not progressive ones.
@@Lazypackmule Hey come on now, there's a big difference between being progressive and being a whiny asshole. I encourage anyone not to conflate the two.

6:29 Can we get an uncensored version for those of us whose curiosity about ancient dentistry is stronger than their squeamishness over said topic?
I've heard the worm thing was based on how if the top of the tooth decays, the exposed nerves can look a lot like worms.
I talked to an 80-ish year-old man in the rural Philippines who had a toothache but wasn't able to pay for treatment. He said he had a worm in his tooth and he smoked to keep it calm (cigarettes were sold individually for about 5 cents, so that was in his budget).
I would love to hear the whole story. the fun is about learning of times gone by

âRob, who hurt you?â
I think we all know who hurt Rob.
::points at the dentists in the audience::
This video:
We don't want to offend people by talking about dentistry.
Meanwhile in another video:
Thousand babies were slaughtered.
That's mostly cuz well, human empathy and squick is a funny thing. Small scale, personal things are okay buuut large scale slaughter overwhelms our ability to emphasize so it stops being scary unless you try REALLY hard.
Itâs not really about offending and more about not grossing people out
Fear is bizarre & unintuitive, people can be entirely content to watch narrative depictions of war & devastation, yet be throttled by anxiety over fairly clinical descriptions of illness and dental surgery.
Did that video with the babies tell you exactly how the babies were killed in detail? Or did it just say "thousands of babies were slaughtered"? Because they talk about the damage those traveling barbers did in this video, they just didn't describe how different surgeries were performed.
Despite everyone's complaining I think learning about the beliefs in play here and how they developed into a school of medicine are more interesting than hearing about the body horror of old timey dental surgery.
@@chaosvii I've never been in a war zone or even had a gun pointed at me, but I was at the dentist only 4 days ago. Even completely numb, I was shaking. So it makes sense for people to be more squeamish about dentists than about wars. Isn't that the idea behind a lot of horror stories - make the familiar scary?
The mouth wash he referred to is urine. In ancient Rome people thought that urine from Iberia (Spain and Portugal) made excellent mouth wash.

Ignoring that, the gruesome/bloody nature of the surgeries will piss off youtube's algorithm and possibly demonetize the video.
Well they are trying to get viewers and freaking out people is a good way to lose viewers. Keeping it pg keeps people watching.

The part about mouthwash that they skipped over is...
Urine. Yes, really. Ancient Romans used piss as mouthwash.
Let's not forget the barber-surgeon's knock: "Shave and a haircut - no legs."
Isn't the "tooth worm" the exposed nerve inside a rotten tooth?
Leo Willenberg that would make a lot or sense
Yes, exactly. They saw some long rotten sh*t coming out of decaying teeth and just assumed it was what it looked like. Europe did that too
I thought I'd read that somewhere also
Horrifyingly enough, yes. âHorrifyingâ because supposedly people would sometimes pull it out as a treatment. Without anesthesia. NOOOOOOPE
Reminds me of the Nerve Ending Fairy from Ren and Stimpy cartoon.
Me: ''I'm having a mild toothache, nothing serious, but I was due for checkup anyways''
Dentist: RIP AND TEAR!!!
This really sucks as it's just skipping most of the details because they are "gross"
I mean being too detailed will get things demonetized. Aside from that this sort of this _is_ horrifying. I find it fascinating but I can definitely see how a _lot_ of people would find the gruesome details sickening, for some people literally so. Their goal is to educate, sure, but a lot of people might have to miss out on learning _any_ of it because they left in all the gross parts, and if they got as many complaints about the flu pandemic video as they implied, then it may be for the best to relegate the truly gnarly bits to another video.
"Rob, seriously, who hurt you?" Really got me.
I don't want to sound like an allout hater but Extra History now seems very watered down.
In this video you didn't get into detail about important parts of dental history and that pattern of watering down things has got me sad about the direction tgis great show is going
@Thought for Food they didnt go into details about what the procedures actually were though
Have to agree.
@@booty_hunter4207 they *NEVER* went into the details about anything visceral ever. Go look back at their videos and you'll see most of the brutalities are either cut out, or censored via blackening out or cartoonish allegories.
@@sharilshahed6106 I mean they in big detail described battles like Cannae.
So your excuse seems a bit off.
I mean, in Rob's defense, dentistry in its modern incarnation is STILL pretty brutal for some people; while we've got better tools, medicines, and a much better understanding of how the body actually works, we're still using drills, scrapers, screws and files to fix up our teeth. The sound of a dental drill revving up gives some people nightmares.
I don't have much trouble with dentists and the usual fears of dental work, but anything that sounds close to the dentist drill triggers something in my teeth
So you dulled down the content on the off chance that someone gets offended by something being icky? Yikes.
Some people just naturally have a weak stomach, stop being an asshole. If everyone always explained the gross details, those who can't stomach that couldn't learn. It's good to also have someone who doesn't explain them, so a wider audience can enjoy it.
